Description of the Site…

Redan Middle is located in Lithonia, Georgia. It is within the Dekalb County school system. The school opened in the Fall of 2003. It is located in a suburban area of Lithonia. RMS consists of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. At the moment, there are 965 students enrolled at Redan Middle. Presently, 924 of the students are Black, 3 are White, 5 are Asian, 13 are Hispanic, and 20 are multiracial. The school consists of a total of 70 teachers. Females, 58, hold most of the teaching positions, with 12 males. Ten teachers make up 6th grade, and twelve each in the 7th and 8th grades. An additional 3 teachers in 6th grade teach special education and 4 each in 7th and 8th grades. Included in the 70 teachers are one MOID, one ESOL, one Math Tools (Level 1), two Coaches (ELA and Math), and the remaining are non-core classes. There is one principal, three assistant principals, six secretaries, two counselors, a media specialist, and one CTSS (Computer Technology Support Specialist). This entire faculty and staff give support to the education and learning of the entire RMS student body.

RMS Media Center Mission…

The mission of the Redan Middle School Media Center is to support the curriculum by providing access to resources in varied formats: ensuring that students know how to locate, evaluate and use information thereby developing into lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

Media Center Policies…

COMPUTER USAGE– Media Center computers are for RESEARCH purposes only! – Students, who need instruction in the use of Microsoft Office

applications (Word, Excel and Power Point), can contact the Media Specialist for assistance.

– Students can get instruction on the use of our online, card catalog system. Click on the icon with the #5. It will read Spectrum Patron Catalog (for card catalog). Patrons can search for the following book information: TITLE, AUTHOR, SUBJECT or KEY WORD.

– Printing is not permitted without an accompanying teacher or permission from Media Staff.

• Students should always consult the Media Specialist, if questions arise regarding Library Media Center rules and/or services.

INTRANET ACCEPTABLE USE

• MISSION:  To provide students and staff members with guidelines for use of the wide area network (WAN).

• Use of the DeKalb County School System wide area network (WAN), school and district office networks, and all connections internally shall be for the exchange of information in order to promote and support educational excellence in the school system.

INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE

• MISSION: To provide students and teachers with guidelines for use of the Internet.

• Use of the Internet must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational objectives of the school system.

INTERNET USAGE

• Students can get instruction in the use of our Internet database, GALILEO. (See the Media Specialist for password).

• Assistance can be given with the following search engines: Yahooligans, Kids Click, Ask Jeeves, NoveList and others appropriate for the middle school user.

• Sending/receiving EMAIL is not allowed on computers in the Media Center. (Sending personal information via computer is not allowed.)

Employee Computer and Internet Use …

The DeKalb County School System provides computers, networks, and Internet access to support the educational mission of the school system

and to enhance the curriculum and learning opportunities for students and school system staff.

 Employees are to utilize the school system’s computers, networks, and

Internet services for school system-related purposes and performance of job duties. Incidental personal use of school system computers is

permitted as long as such use does not interfere with the employee’s job duties and performance, with system operations, or other system users. “Incidental personal use” is defined as use by an individual employee for occasional personal communications. Employees are reminded that such personal use must comply with this policy and all other applicable policies,

procedures, and rules. 

The employee is responsible for his/her actions and activities involving school unit computers, network, and Internet services, and for his/her

computer files, passwords, and accounts.13

PHOTOCOPYING

There is a $0.10 per pagefee to photocopy or print material. The photocopier and printer are available for research purposes only. In some cases, students may type reports and print them in the Media Center. Students should see the Media Specialist for assistance.

Media Center Make-up…

This years budget for the RMS media center was $12,635. The media center is comprised of 10,549 print and non-print items. The average age of the collection is 1997, which is 12 years old. There are 4,111 items that are dated in the 2000s and 5,638 in the 1990s. A total of 3,680 checkouts have occurred to this date. On an average, there are 10.93 items per student, which is over the recommended 10 items per student. The school has three computer labs, one 21st Century classroom, two mobile laptop carts, seven multimedia carts, and one media production room. Also, inside the media center there are twelve computers. Located across from the media center is a Parent Center that is open for the public.

• The media center is easily accessible to anyone that enters the school.

• The media center has 12 computers. • There is one colored printer and one

black/white printer in use.• A scanner is located at the end of one of the set

of computers.

Conference Room…

The conference room is used occasionally by the Social Worker. Instead of using the Media Center, the Parent Center has much more space. It is across the hall. Conferences can be held in the Clerk’s Office.

To incorporate and enhance reading in all the students’ lives, the media program offers a variety of tools for the students.

Reading Counts is the computer-based reading motivation program that turns students into avid readers, tests their comprehension, and tracks their progress. The Reading Counts program motivates K-12 students to love reading; tests comprehension of over 30,000 titles; measures progress and boosts reading success; and engages readers with outstanding books from over 400 publishers.

Survey Findings…

Two Administrators, eight teachers, one media specialist, one counselor, six students, and three parents were surveyed. All participants work at, attend, or have children that attend RMS.

• All stated the media center needed a more relaxing atmosphere.

• All stated a need for more and updated computers.• 15 out of 21felt the center needed to be

remodeled.

Survey Findings…

When asked about any additional changes that they would prefer:

• The media specialist requested a smaller circulation desk, in a new location.

• All teachers wanted more teacher resources and supplies in the Work Room.

• 4 of the students agreed with the need for an area to browse books, or magazines.

• 3 students and 4 teachers want the room to be more colorful.

• All of the students want more comfortable chairs.

Empty Shelves

• Suggestions were made to combine books on the shelves. Books can be placed at the bottom where the shelves are empty. Empty shelves can be removed. This would free space. However, the shelves can’t be moved.
