Purpose…of this Campus Master Plan Update is to:

• provide a valuable tool for future decision making

• support the academic mission• set a logical course for capital

improvements over the next thirty to fifty years

The campus master plan was prepared in 2000. The 2006 master plan updated provides a 5-year incremental update to the 2000 plan.

• Created by Minnesota legislature 1963 as Southwest Minnesota State College

• Enrolled its charter class late in the fall of 1967 with buildings still under construction

• The University changed from the quarter to the semester system in 1996

• In January of 2002, a fire destroyed the residence hall dining facility. The smoke damage from the fire extended to the Student Center

• The university made a change to its current name in 2003 to Southwest Minnesota State University

• Ranked top of its division since 1998 by U.S. News and World Report’s annual America’s Best Colleges issue—Nine consecutive years
