The art of teaching might just run in the family. The fact that both

of Lauren’s parents are teachers (dad, history; mom, first grade)

certainly influencedLauren,aneducationmajor,withagift for teaching

youngerkidswithspecialneeds.

“Ispentalotoftimeinmymom’sfirst-gradeclassroomandlovedit.She

setitupsocomfortably,likeahomeawayfromhome.I’vealsovolunteered

atspecialeducationsummerschools,”Laurensays.“SoIknowwhatstrong

bondsyoucanformwithstudentsandthepositiveimpactyoucanhave.”

Laurennotonlyhasapositiveimpactonherstudents,butonthevolleyball

court,asportshehasbeenplayingsinceshewassixyearsold.Akeyplayer

onAlbright’svolleyballteam,Laurenpointsoutthatherroleontheteam

helpshertoo.“Playingasportallowsmetokeepfocusedandontopofmy

schoolwork.Itreallymotivatesme.AndIknowIcancountonmyteammates

onandoffthecourt.”

Recallinghowquietsheoncewas,Laurenlaughsandsayshercurrentfriendsmight

haveahardtimepicturingthattoday.“I’vebrokenoutofmyshell,”Laurengrins.

I want to teach little kids. I like that they still need you to tie their shoes.

ofcoursework.Likemanyotherfreshmen,hestruggledtokeepup

withtheacademicdemandsofcollegelife.“Itwasreallyhardfor

metoadjusttotheamountofworkandmanagemytime.Itriedto

handleitallbymyself,butIadmitthatIbecamereallyfrustrated,”

saysBrendan.

Wisely,Brendantookanimportantsteptowardsimproving

hisgrades(nottomentionhisexperienceofbeing

afreshman).Hereachedouttohisprofessorssuchas

LawrenceMorris,Ph.D.(English)andJuliaHeberle,

Ph.D. (Psychology)—and followed their advice.

“Myprofessorsgavemegreattipsforlearning

moreaboutthematerial.Ialsoformedastudy

groupwithmyfriends.AfterImadethose

changes,thingsbecamesomucheasier.”

AnEnglishmajor,Brendanespeciallyenjoys

Inferno,JosephConrad’sThe Heart of

Darkness,andKafka’sMetamorphosisare

afewofhisfavorites.“Ijustfinished

acoursetaughtbyDr.RichardAndrone

called ‘The Vampyre’ and I loved it

becausewereadlotsofclassics.”

Anaspiringdoctor,whatChrisremembersmostabouthisfirstvisitto

Albright is having the opportunity to talk to a biology professor who

inspiredhim.“Dr.Campbellisextremelypassionateaboutteachingand

takesan interest inallofherstudents. I remember feelingasenseof

connectionwithherrightaway.She’sbeenlikeasecondmomtome.”

WiththehelpofDr.KarenCampbellduringhisfreshmanyear,Chrishad

theopportunitytocompleteamedicalexternshipattheReadingHospital.

Inthe“scribeprogram,”studentsworkwithphysiciansandcomplete

a medical chart while the physician examines the patient. For

Chris,theexperiencecoveredmorethanmedicalterminology

andseveralmonthsofclinicalexperience.“Ireally

learnedabouttheimportanceofcompassion

as a doctor, which is something that

can’tbetaughtinaclassroom.Itwas

sovaluabletome.”

Bythetimeshewasinthesixthgrade,Jennifer’sparentswereunabletohelpherwith(increasingly)advancedmathassignments.Placedintoanhonorsprogramforthegiftedandtalented,shestartedofferingherhelptoherclassmatesinstead.“IloveditandI’vebeenatutoreversince.”

JenniferdecidedtoattendAlbrightCollegeduringher junioryear inhighschoolafteratourshedescribesasfunandbubbly.Sheremembersthatwhentheydrovehomefromthetour,hermomsuggestedthatshevisitafewotherschools.“Isaid,‘Sure,Mom,butIwant to let youknow rightnow, I’mdefinitelygoinghere.’Ifeltthatstronglyaboutthecampus.”

Beingclosetohermomandsister,Jenniferadmitsthatshewasactuallyalittlehomesickwhenshefirstarrivedat Albright, but not for long. Not only did Jenniferclickwithherroommate,butshefoundthatclassessuch as “Educational Theatre” gave her an entirelynewperspectiveonherfuturevocation—teaching.“We had to build our own set and put on a20-minute performance at the end of the class.Itreallytaughtmetothinkoutofthebox.”

In 10 years, Jennifer plans to be working asahigh schoolmath teacherwho lovesher job.“Idon’twant tobeoneof thosepeoplewhohatesgoing towork. If I can just impactonepersoninoneofmyclassesthenIhaveachievedmygoal.”

TheexperiencethatchangedSophie’slifewasanInterimcourseatAlbright

inwhichstudentstravelledtoHawaiiforanintensivestudyoftheregion’s

HawaiianHumpbackwhalepopulation.RunbyAlbrightprofessor,Marsha

Green,Ph.D.,thecoursewasdesignedtocollectdataontheimpact

oftheboatsusedbythewhale-watchingindustry.Sincetheboatsare

extremelyloudandwhalesarehighlysensitivetosound,largeboatscan

haveanegativeeffectonwhalepopulationsinsurprisingways.

“Itreallyopenedmyeyesevenfurthertothefactthatallofouractions

haveconsequences.Yourealizehowsmallyouare,buthowmuchofan

impactyoucanhavetoo.Thatcoursechangedmylife,”reflectsSophie.

ItwasduringhersecondyearofcollegethatSophierealized

shewantedtodevotehercareertoworkingonbehalfof

animalsandtheenvironment.

“ItalkedwithmyprofessorsandIstartedtothink:‘Whynot

becomeanenvironmentalstudiesmajor?’I’mpassionate

about the earth and being environmentally conscious.’”

Not surprisingly, Sophie is an active

memberoftheenvironmentalclub

on campus, Environmental

CampusOutreach(ECO),and

servesasvicepresidentof

theorganization.I’m learning what is involved in making real change.

There is never a dull moment.

A theatremajoranddynamicactress, itmakessense thatSzalenealsomajors inpsychology.

“I liketotalktopeople,” laughsSzalene.“AndI just lovewonderingwhypeopledothethings

theydo.SometimesIevenanalyzemyfriends.”

People watching is good preparation for any actress, but is also the kind

oflivelycuriositythatledtheyoungDominoPlayertowonderabout

other cultures—and encourage greater understanding between

domestic and international students on campus. Szalene

serves as secretary of Albright’s International Student

Association (ISA) and is a member of the Cultural

Awareness Relations (CARE) program, which pairs

domesticstudentswith internationalstudents, forcoffee,

lunchand,mostimportantly,conversation.

“I think it’s important to reach out,” Szalene explains.

“Wehavesomuchtolearnfromeachother!”

SzalenelearnedaboutAlbrightviaasearchontheCollege

Boardand“fell in lovewith it”after visiting thecampus

withafriend,whoisalsoactiveinthetheatredepartment.

Shefoundthatthehappy,welcomingattitudeonAlbright’s

campus eased her transition to college life. Now, she

focusesoneasingthattransitionforothers.

When sophIe schuster traveled to Hawaiito learn about whales, she took part in a life-changingexperiencetodofirst-handresearchwithan internationally renowned scholar. Presidentof the Ocean Mammal Institute, Marsha Green,Ph.D.,developedthepsychobiologyconcentrationatAlbrightCollegeandteachescourses inanimalbehavior, behavioralneuroscience, ecologicalpsychologyandfieldresearchontheHawaiianHumpbackWhale.Since2002,GreenhasbeenworkingwiththeEuropeanunionParliamentonthehighintensityactivesonarissue.
