When you go to Facebook as a first-time user to create an account you are establishing a PROFILE. This is how you interact personally with people from church, work, fantasy football, or Zumba.

…it is also how you play games on Facebook…

With your PROFILE you can create or be given admin rights to manage a PAGE or GROUP.

A Facebook PAGE is something businesses and nonprofits use to reach fans and customers. Your PAGE can have multiple administrators who will have the same access to reports as you do, and the ability to post content as your PAGE. The best part about PAGES however, is paid advertising.

Facebook GROUPS are great for groups of 2-3 people all the way up to several hundred people. You can create a secret GROUP for employees to share strategies, or you can join or create GROUPS around shared interests. The possibilities are limitless. Something unique that can be done in GROUPS, but not with PAGES, is creating documents and uploading files. Very cool, especially for private GROUPS!

The difference between Facebook PAGES, PROFILES, and GROUPS is significant in technological terms. However, the challenge for some people is more linguistic. Think of PAGES, PROFILES, and GROUPS as proper nouns (because they are). Throughout this presentation the intentional use of “small caps” has signified when the proper noun version has been used. Now that you know the difference between the three, and how they are used grammatically, go forth and spread your newfound wisdom!

A Facebook Page is to a generic webpage, as: the Empire State Building is to a building.

A Facebook Profile is to a driver’s license, as: Broadway is to a street.

A Facebook Group is to a mob, as: Improv Everywhere is to a troupe.
