WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ME

MADE OF: •Hydrolytic Enzymes

MADE BY:•Endoplasmic Reticulum, then transported to the Golgi Apparatus

FUNCTION:

Recycling cells organic materials

Digesting macromolecules then using vacuoles to transport the small molecules to the rest of the cell for use

Involved in the process of programed cell death (apoptosis: the self destruction of cells needed to keep mitosis in check)

LYSOSOME STORAGE DISEASE:

In humans, a variety of inherited conditions can affect lysosomes. These defects are called storage diseases and include Pompe’s disease and Tay-Sachs disease. People with these disorders are missing one or more of the lysosomal hydrolytic enzymes. Symptoms include developmental delay, movement disorders, seizures, dementia, deafness and/or blindness. Some people with Lysosomal storage disease have enlarged livers (hepatomegaly) and enlarged spleens (splenomegaly), pulmonary and cardiac problems, and bones that grow abnormally.

RANDOM:

Lysosomes don’t exist in plant cells, in plant cells vacuoles do their job

Lysosomes fuse with vacuoles which help them distribute small molecules to the rest of the cell for use

Must maintain a 4.5 pH of enzymes to function properly
