THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN 2016
Written by Maria Salomon Yumang FAAWIS President 2016
“A leader is powerful to the degree he
empowers others”
Early this year, I took my daughter and
her BFF snow tubing. At some point, I
told them to wait because I felt that the
slope was treacherous. My daughter said,
“You’re acting like a president again.” I
was taken aback and thought that she
meant I was too bossy. She then ex-
plained, “That’s what presidents do. They
keep everybody safe.”
I do hope that I met your expectations of
me as your FAAWIS president. My hum-
ble apologies for my inadequacies and
deficiencies but please know that I tried
to fulfill my duties and responsibilities to
the best of my ability.
2016 was a wonderful year! I had the
opportunity to serve and network with the
Filipino-American community. I am eter-
nally grateful to the Board Members,
Officers, Committee Chairs and Members
for all their hard work, leadership and
support. But most of all, my sincerest
gratitude to all of you. The generous sup-
port, involvement, participation and inter-
action of individuals like you make it
possible for our organization to be viable,
visible, vibrant, vital and helped make
our community a great one!
Thank you again for your support!

FAAWIS DINNER DANCE Written by Sol Atienza Yoder
Congratulations on another well-attended and spectacular Dinner Dance! It was “Simply the Best”!!! This unique theme marked the 44th Annual FAAWIS Dinner Dance on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha, Wis-consin. The theme resonated the message that it doesn’t have to be complicated or extravagant to be an exquisite and classy event. Attendance was an incredible 235 people, all wearing their finest attire.
The event-filled program was led by the talented emcees, Tom Hey and Cream Pep-ito Sommer. As guests arrived, the mood was set for the evening with music by Ral Enriquez. The ceremony began with our national anthems. Kaylib Berkshire sang the Star Spangled Banner while Leo Vi-tangcol led Lupang Hinirang. Following this were inspiring words from our devoted FAAWIS president, Maria Salomon Yu-mang. >continued on pg. 3

Christmas celebration came upon our FAAWIS family on December 4th, with a brunch. The brunch was on its 3rd celebration at the Wisconsin Club. It was very well attended as it has been in the past. The club was full with cheerful guests and the festivities were started by a cheerful rendi-tion of “12 Days of Christmas” by our guests. As we have done in the past, we had a short program to entertain our guests. We had piano music >continued on pg. 3

Hi! I am Miriam Santos-Amador, FAAWIS Presi-
dent for 2017. I am married to Alex Amador, and
have two teenage boys, Sammy (17) and Elie (16).
I was born and raised in the Milwaukee area. Some
of you may remember my parents, Ninette and
Teng Santos.
Because I was raised in the area, and my mom
started the Silahis Dance Troupe, FAAWIS has
always been a part of my life. I remember as a
child having Christmas parties and dance practices
at St. Florian’s church, and later at the International
Institute and St. Philip Neri. I have known many of
you since I was a little girl, and I am counting on
your cooperation and participation in the upcoming
events.
I have been thinking recently about the state of
our nation and why we are here in the United
States. My mom came to Milwaukee in 1963, and
my tatay followed in 1965. When I was born, they
had the choice to go back, but they decided to stay.
As I was growing up, we went back “home” every
5-7 years, so that I would know my heritage and
family.
FAAWIS is a way to continue our traditions and
build our community. I want my children to know
their heritage, and why it’s important to be a Filipi-
no living in America. That is why all of us are a
part of FAAWIS; to continue our heritage and tra-
ditions and teach our young the importance of be-
ing a Filipino in America. Thank you for being a
part of FAAWIS, and for being role models for our
children, and future generations!

This was promptly followed by the invoca-tion, which was conducted by Father Art Ysmael.
To coincide with the theme “Simply the Best”, there was a Simply the Best Dressed Contest! Categories were male and female with age ranges for each. Judges were Tom Hey, Sol Atienza Yoder and a real fashion image consultant, Sunghi Moore. Contest-ants were judged on style, uniqueness, poise, and many other aspects. However, the climatic mo-ment of the night was when the female winner of the “Senior” category was announced. Ms. Delia Plaga was initially given the crown only to be betrayed by our emcee, Leo Vitangcol, who mis-takenly announced the incorrect winner. The crown was then rightfully handed to the true winner, Mrs. Lydia Petzak. Story sound famil-iar?! From the 20 total contestants, the follow-ing were our fashionable winners:
Miss Elena Sommer
Mr. Mark Mendoza
Ms. Bonita Bird
Mr. Kaylib Berkshire
Mrs. Queenie Weesen
Mrs. Arlene Isip
Mr. Andy Ladron
Mrs. Lydia Petzak
Continuing with the program, honors were presented to well deserved recipients:
Presidential Award presented by Maria Salo-mon Yumang to Tom Hey
Outstanding Community Service Award, presented by Dr. Nela Mendoza-Lemes and Miri-am Santos-Amador to Mrs. Zen Edralin
To start the evening’s entertainment, Alana Michaels provided entertaining music and Robyn Cabigting gracefully danced. Following this was the 50/50 raffle, which was won by Nicole Al-bano.
Continuing the entertainment, the opening dance group was led by Lady M & the Fabulous FAAWIS Funkettes, choreographed by our graceful Marivic Gilbert. This started the se-quence of multiple line dances and participation from the audience. Masses of people enjoyed the dancing activities while the music was pro-vided by Derick Yumang. Further dance perfor-mances were made by the entertaining Hot Lips, led by Roz Daniels, and the talented Bakal Girls.
The evening was not complete without enjoy-ing delicious Filipino desserts, which were pro-vided by various talented volunteer bakers. Des-serts included biko, maja blanca, sapin sapin, bibingka, mocha cake, ube, among other tasty treats! Delicious!
As always, a raffle was held during the dinner dance. Proceeds from the raffle go to benefit the FAAWIS social and cultural programming events. A grateful thank you to all our donators of the raffle prizes: $500 Best Buy gift card from Dr. & Mrs. Glenn & Jen Cueto Gequillana & son, Nick and the Jen Cueto family, and a 50” LED Smart TV donated by Alvin and Sheila Plaga Jackson & children Kaylib, Jylian, Danika & Braydon. Congratulations to all our lucky prize winners!
Another successful FAAWIS Dinner Dance! The fun, camaraderie, and cele-brations left our attendees with the remem-brances of an evening with dear friends, family, and an appreciation of the simple, yet elegant.
A special “Salamat Po” to our Dinner Dance Committee members: Maria Salomon Yumang (2016 FAAWIS president), Sheila Plaga Jack-son (Chair), Sol Atienza Yoder (Co-Chair), Josie Brunner, Rosalyn Daniels, Grace Malett, Marilyn Mallari, Maribel Mandela, Dr. Nela

from Ina Ramos and Cody Tilistiak. Ral Enriquez played Saxophone while Mira Sto. Tomas played violin. We were then serenaded by Alana Michaels and the Bakalz family with Christmas Carols. The FAAWIS schol-arship for 2016 was awarded to Isa Ramos who is currently a freshman at Marquette University. Isa plans to pur-sue a career in the medical field. The Ninette Santos Scholarship honoring excellence in folk dancing, was award-ed to Danny Wickman. Danny has been a long time and dedicated dancer for FAAWIS, greatly honoring Filipino culture. The other highlight of the party was the presentation of the 2017 FAAWIS new board members. The new board members were inducted by Mr. Roger Mendoza and Mrs. Zenaida Edralin. During the celebration, we had a brief presentation from Dr. Rowena Punzalan and the late Ms. Rebecca Abraham who informed us about bone marrow transplants and the need for donors. They encouraged us to learn about bone marrow transplant and to consider becoming donors to this wor-thy cause. The Christmas party would not be complete without family photo shoots with Santa. Photos were taken by Ra-
mon and Pam Marcelino, courtesy of FAAWIS. We thank our 2016 pres-ident, Maria Salomon-Yumang, for her hard work and dedication throughout the year, ensuring success in all her events. In her graciousness, Maria pre-sented a plaque to all of her Committee Chairs at the Christmas party, thanking them for their support and
help in all her events. We thank our DJ, Derick Yumang, who provided our festive music. We also thank Ed and Myla Catacu-tan for being our event photographers. Lastly we thank all our guests for making this event a success. We hope to see you again at the 2017 Christmas party.

Every year the FAAWIS community gathers to raise funds for the Free Medical Clinic. While some of the participants are die-hard bowlers who try to improve their techniques, others are content to just dust off their bowl-ing gear for their once a year adven-ture on the bowling lanes. But either way, everyone from the littlest bowler to the oldest participant is there for a good time. And, this year was no exception. This year the bowlers gathered on April 16th at JB’s on 41 and filled thirty-four lanes. At the end of the afternoon, these participants heard
their names called to claim the following awards. All scores are for high-est two games.

The highlight of the afternoon was the performances by the Munting Tinig Choir, and dance performances by the Hot Lips Dancers, Bakalz Girls and the Philippine Dance Troupe all the way from the Fox Cit-ies. Then came fun games for the chil-dren and adults, including cut-throat musical chairs and tug-of-war. Of course, the traditional volleyball tournament was going on, thanks to Patrick Moloney! Con-gratulations to all the lucky winners, especially the Saraspe Family! If you weren’t there, you really missed out on a fun filled day. A life well lived by Norma C. Clemente Norma Crisologo Clemente, 87, of Oak Creek, WI, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. Born June 1, 1929 in Manila, Philippines, she was the daugh-ter of the late Manuel Crisologo and Trinidad Torres; loving wife of late Francisco R. Clemen-te and mother to late Cecilia.
She is survived by her children, Dorothy of Oak Creek, Renato (wife Connie) of Milwaukee, Joel (wife Elizabeth) of Mequon, Paul (wife Elsa) of Greendale, Jean-Paoul of Scottsdale, AZ, Mark of Phoenix, AZ, Ted Manalo of Milwaukee and Dennis McEvoy of Phoenix, grandchildren Joel (wife Kris-ta), James, Lisa, Mariel (husband Mat-thew Mohns), Manika and Nathan, great-grandchild Adria Lin Mohns (just born 4 days prior to Mama Norma’s passing).
Norma married Francisco Clemente in 1944. Their town was invaded during the war and they had had to flee for their lives. Eventually Mamang and Papang Clemente settled and ended up in Quezon City with their 6 children (their second daughter Cecilia passed away earlier when she was 10 with a heart complica-tion).
Papang Clemente was a Civil Engi-neer for Quezon City and was involved in building the City Hall that still stands there today. Mama Norma was not only passionately involved in raising her kids, she was also a leader in establishing many community projects in Laloma. She became a great friend of the Mayor! Mamang also made sure her family was involved with Lourdes Church. Mama Norma also loved and cared for her sib-lings (all would say they were a success because of Ate Norma). Her entrepre-neurial and management skills was evi-dent in her catering, plants and tropical fish businesses, all the while modelling to her kids the value of relationships and hard work.
Papang Clemente had dreams in the
Mid 1950s of moving his family to America. When the opportunity for pro-fessionals in America opened up in the 1960s, he was hired as an Engineer for the City of Milwaukee and also as a
Mathematics Professor at MATC. Dorothy, the oldest daughter, immigrated in 1968 and was employed as an Accountant with the Wis-consin Gas Company. Mama Norma, along with her 5 sons, was able to immigrate to America in July 1969. Sadly, in February of 1970, Papang Clemente passed away (only 8 months after reuniting as a whole family)!
Widowed Mama Norma, with her aptitude for home business, persevered and acquired many clients for her sewing and cooking skills. With the support of Dorothy and the Milwaukee Filipino Community, Mama Norma raised her children well, continuing to impress upon them love, good education, hard work, and involvement in community service! Mama Norma eventually worked for a few companies till she worked for the Milwaukee County. Mama Norma was able to retire with great accomplishments for the County.
At retirement, she enjoyed her life with Ate Dot in their home in Oak Creek, where they grew all sorts of plants and vegetables and sewed many dresses for the Filipino community. Mama Norma loved her children and her community. She devoted much time in leadership with FAAWIS and representing the Fili-pino community in Milwaukee and Wis-consin in many events. Mama Norma had been honored not only by the Filipi-no community but many Government agencies, including Governors of Wis-consin!
Mama Norma Clemente will surely be missed but she left a great legacy for everyone to follow; love, hard work, creativity, perseverance, contentment, care and service to others!
or for the Sampaguita children's group. She also served as a secretary of FAAWIS for more than 15 years and had been actively involved in lot of Filipino-American community and service projects. Becky was the first Filipino school principal within the Milwaukee Pub-lic Schools systems. Her dedication to her family, job and community has been remarkable. She will be truly missed!
