WELCOME

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN (please stand)Great Is Thy Faithfulness

PART ONE — THE HALLELMUSIC BY LLOYD LARSON

1. Praise the Lord, You Servants of the Lord Text: Lloyd Larson, based on Psalm 113

1. Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father! There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not: As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Refrain: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

2. Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Refrain

3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow—Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O servants of the Lord!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O servants of the Lord!Sing your praise with voices raised to God who reigns on high.Praise the Lord, lift your voice, and praise the Lord!

Blessed be the name of the Lord forevermore; From the breaking of the dawn to the setting sun.For His glory shines above the highest heavens!Blessed be the name of the Lord!

Who is like the Lord, our God, who sits enthroned on high,The Lord, our God, the holy One we glorify? He gives a home to the homeless, a child to the childless; From the dust the poor are raised to reign on high!

When Israel was going forth From out of Egypt’s land,And Jacob’s house from foreign tongues They could not understand,To be God’s holy dwelling place, God’s choice on Judah fell,And there as God’s dominion took God’s chosen Israel.

O tremble earth, before the Lord; The God of Jacob fear.God made the rock a water pool, The stone a fountain clear.Lord take our hands, guide our feet As You did in days of yore.In humble service we shall be Your children evermore!

The sea beheld and fled away; The Jordan stopped its flow. The mountains skipped like rams; The hills like lambs moved to and fro.O sea, why did you run away? O Jordan, why turn tide? You mounts and hills, like rams and lambs, Why leap on every side?

2. When Israel Was Going Forth Text: Anonymous and Lloyd Larson, based on Psalm 114

Thank you for joining us today! As we reflect on God’s faithfulness, we pray you will be encouraged in your faith as you trust in the Lord. Concert selections will be chosen from the following songs. Narrators, soloists and testimonies will vary among performances.

Please withhold applause until the end of Part One and the end of Part Three.

4. I Love the Lord Music: Lloyd Larson, incorporating LEONI, Traditional Hebrew Melody, Text: Lloyd Larson, based on Psalm 116

3. Grateful Songs of Joy We Raise Text: Lloyd Larson, based on Psalm 115

Not to us, O Lord, be the glory, But Your name we lift in praise! Not to us, O Lord, be the glory, Grateful songs of joy we raise.

Though the nations say, “Where is your God,The One you praise on high?”Though the nations say, “Where is this God,The One you glorify?”

“Where is your God, The One you lift in praise?Where is this God? Why the songs of joy you raise?”

The God we serve, of whom we sing, Is Lord of all, our living King! Not made of silver, wood, or gold.God reigns supreme! His glories are untold.

Trust in the Lord. Trust in the Lord.He shall be your help and your shield,Trust in the Lord.Fear the Lord, O Israel, trust in the Lord.

I love the Lord who heard my cry and granted my request. In Him who hears and answers prayer my trust, through life, shall rest. With deadly sorrows compassed round, my heart was full of grief. Then to the Lord I made my prayer that He would send relief.

I love the Lord who heard my cry and pitied every groan. Long as I live and troubles rise, I’ll hasten to the throne. I love the Lord who heard my cry and chased my grief away. O let my heart no more despair while I have breath to pray.

The Lord is kind and just, and gracious to the meek; He saved me when I cried to Him, though I was poor and weak. Return, my soul, to rest; no longer troubled be. The Lord’s sustaining love has dealt most graciously with me.

Before my God I stand in deep humility; Salvation’s cup I lift in praise for He has set me free. Come, people of the King, bring your sacrifice of thanks and sing:The Lord is good, praise His holy name! God is evermore the same!

5. Come and Praise the Lord! Text: Lloyd Larson, based on Psalm 117

Praise the Lord, all you nations;Praise the Lord, all you people of the earth! Praise the Lord, all you nations; Come and praise the Lord!

For God’s steadfast love is great toward us, And His faithfulness endures forever. For the steadfast love of the Lord shall never end. O praise Him evermore!

Praise God forever and forever. Praise God forever and forever. His love endures forever and ever. Praise God forevermore.

6. Give Thanks to God/Reprise Text: Lloyd Larson, based on Psalm 118

Give thanks to God for He is good; His love endures forevermore.Rejoice, give thanks, and bless His name,The God whom we adore.

In my distress I cried to the Lord,He heard my humble plea.I shall not fear; I will trust in Him,For He shall set me free.

The Lord is my strength, everlasting song,My light and my salvation. With shouts of joy and victory,Praise the King of all creation!

Open the gates of righteousness That I may enter in.Give thanks to the Lord, our God and King,Who delivers us from sin.For the stone that the builders rejected Has become the cornerstone!Blessed is He who comesIn the name of the Lord!

Trust in the Lord. Trust in the Lord.He shall be your help and your shield,Trust in the Lord.Fear the Lord, O Israel, trust in the Lord.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,O servants of the Lord!Sing your praise with voices raised to GodWho reigns on high.Praise the Lord, lift your voice,And praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

PART TWO — GOD’S FAITHFULNESS Through Salvation in Jesus Christ

Born to Die to Set Us Free Music: David C. Dickau, Text: Anonymous

Jesu, Jesu, born to die,Jesu, Jesu was born to die upon a tree.

Blessed be that maid Marie, Born was He of her body; Very God ere time began, Born in time the Son of Man.

He at Bethlehem was born, Salem gave Him crown of thorn, Life of want and death of scorn, All for love of man forlorn.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the Law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now You are letting Your

servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation that You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.” Luke 2:25–32

Lamb of God German Chorale, 1540, arr. F. Melius Christiansen

Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross didst suffer, And patient still and lowly, Thyself to scorn didst offer; Our sins by Thee were taken, or hope had us forsaken:Have mercy on us, O Jesus!

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Music: Lowell Masson, arr. Gilbert Martin, Text: Isaac Watts

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid is Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love, so amazing so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all! Amen!

1. Jesus, keep me near the Cross, There a precious fountainFree to all — a healing stream, Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain.

Refrain: In the Cross, in the Cross, Be my glory ever;Till my raptured soul shall find Rest beyond the river.

2. Near the Cross, a trembling soul, Love and mercy found me;There the bright and morning star Shed its beams around me. Refrain

3. Near the Cross! O Lamb of God, Bring its scenes before me;Help me walk from day to day, With its shadow o’er me. Refrain

4. Near the Cross I’ll watch and wait, Hoping, trusting ever,Till I reach the golden strand, Just beyond the river. Refrain

But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

PART THREE — OUR RESPONSEPraise, Gaze, Prayer, and Trust

OFFERING

Hallelujah Chorus Music: George Frederic Handel, Text: Charles Jennens, King James Bible, Book of Common Prayer

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth! The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of His ChristAnd He shall reign forever and ever. King of kings and Lord of lords. Hallelujah!

The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, And He shall reign forever and ever. Revelation 11:15

I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light Music: Kathleen Thomerson, arr. Brent Roberts, Text: Kathleen Thomerson

I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus.

In Him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus. Clear sun of righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the Father.

I’m looking for the coming of Christ. I want to be with Jesus. When we have run with patience the race, we shall know the joy of Jesus.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in Him in all speech and all knowledge — even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you — so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the

day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:4–9

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24

Sung in Swahili: Wana baraka wale waombao; Yesu mwenyewe alisema. Alleluya! Wana amani Wana Furaha Wana uzima

English translation:They have blessings, those who pray;Jesus himself said so. Alleluia! They have peaceThey have joyThey have well-being

“Truly, truly I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, He will give it to you… Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full… In Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus speaking in John 16:23, 24, 33

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation; He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

I will sing of God’s mercy, every day, every hour, He gives me power. I will sing and give thanks to Thee For all the dangers, toils and snares that He has brought me out. He is my God and I’ll serve Him — no matter what the test. Trust and never doubt, Jesus will surely bring you out, He never failed me yet.

I know God is able to deliver in time of storm.I know that He’ll keep you safe from all earthly harm. One day when my weary soul is at rest, I’m going home to be forever blessed.

Didn’t my God deliver Moses from king Pharoah? And didn’t He cool the fiery furnace For Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? When I think of what my God can do, He delivered Daniel, I know He will deliver you.

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. Isaiah 12:2

Hallelujah!

STUDENT TESTIMONY

Maggie Lewandowski Who is like the LORD our God who sits enthroned on high? Psalm 113:5

This line from Praise the Lord, You Servants has stood out to me from the first time we sang through the song. At first the line stuck out because of the uncomfortable page turn in the middle of the phrase, as well as the challenging octave leap in the melody, but now this section impacts me each time I sing it because of the deep meaning within the text. Who is like our LORD? 1 Samuel 2:2 says, “There is none holy like the LORD: for there is none besides You; there is no rock like our God.” One of the ways I see God’s uniqueness and holiness is through His faithfulness, through times filled with joy and times of difficult trials.

God has blessed me through a wonderful, Christian friend with whom I can be honest and vulnerable. We tell each other about the good, the bad, and everything in between. We encourage each other in the truth that God is greater than any of our hard times, and that the good times are a blessing from our Great Provider. Recently, we were talking, and I told her “God is good in canceled trips to Haiti, and God is good in being single on Valentine’s Day.” Now, we encourage each other to take that prompt and fill in the rest, “God is good in…”

Right now in my life, God is good in preparing me for AFLBS graduation, God is good in long and tiring choir tours, and God is good in helping me discover my brokenness and need for a God that is incomparably greater than I.

Psalm 117:2 says, “For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD!” I encourage you to reflect on the words of the Hallel Psalms in our songs, and think of a few “God is good in...” situations in your own life, because the answer to the question, “Who is like our LORD?” is no one. No one and nothing can compare to a our God, and God is good to us in every situation.

STUDENT TESTIMONY

Josiah QuanbeckThe Lord is kind and just, and gracious to the meek; He saved me when I cried to Him, though I was poor and weak. Return, my soul, to rest; no longer troubled be. The Lord’s love has dealt most graciously with me.

These words strike me every time I sing them. They are from one of our songs, I Love the Lord, based heavily on Psalm 116. This text contains deep meaning for me, as it so accurately sums up my life and a chief struggle I have had. “He saved me when I cried to Him, though I was poor and weak.” I know this simple description of Christ’s salvation to be true to me and to all believers. My struggle, however, is found in the following line, “Return my soul to rest; no longer troubled be.” For much of my life, I had a difficult time finding rest in Christ’s salvation. I knew Christ saved me, but I still felt that somehow, I wasn’t doing enough. I felt God somehow needed my good works. I needed to do more, be better. And then I also felt that I was still sinning too much. I felt that as a Christian, I definitely shouldn’t be struggling with sin as much as I was. But in all of that, I was missing the very thing I knew to be true, that Christ saved me in my weakness. Period. He didn’t mostly save me and then leave the rest up to me, or save me on the condition that I would remain sinless after that. He dealt graciously with me and saved me in my sinful, poor and weak state. I wouldn’t need saving if I could save myself. Christ’s life, death, and resurrection paid fully for my sin. Christ required nothing from me. I gave Him my sin and unworthiness, and He clothed me in His righteousness. I am now righteous before God, with no condemnation towards me.

“Return, my soul, to rest; no longer troubled be.” These words are beautiful as I look at what Christ has done for me. I can trust that the Lord has saved me. He is faithful to forgive me of my sins. In light of this, I don’t have to be troubled any longer, and my soul can truly rest.

For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD! Psalm 117:2 (ESV)

God is faithful. And we have encountered His faithfulness and love towards us in so many ways. Through creation — God not only created this world, but also each one of us. Through salvation — found in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through God’s presence with us — in the Holy Spirit, in His Word. May we, in turn, place our trust in Him, and praise Him.

This year, AFLBS is thrilled to be part of a consortium which has commissioned a brand new set of music based on The Hallel Psalms. Minneapolis-based composer, Lloyd Larson, has beautifully set these texts, which share of God’s steadfast love, enduring faithfulness, and continual presence. They call us all to Praise the Lord!

A Word from the Composer, Lloyd LarsonThe Hallel is the name given to the group of Psalms 113–118. They are largely psalms of praise and are deeply rooted in our Judeo-Christian heritage. In the Old Testament, these psalms were typically chanted or sung during the major Jewish festivals. They were often recited or sung in worship and also used in the homes of Jewish families, particularly at the feast of Passover. In the New Testament, there is no reason to believe that this practice did not continue with the early followers of Christ. The Hallel may, in fact, have been the very hymn that Jesus and His disciples sang together at the conclusion of the Passover meal as Scripture indicates.

Today, these psalms continue to be a regular part of both Jewish and Christian worship. They celebrate the majesty and sovereignty of God. They recall the Exodus journey of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land. They underscore God’s bountiful goodness and faithfulness for His children. The Messianic overtones foretell the coming of Jesus, and they provide a dramatic vehicle for praising the living and eternal Creator.

As I have crafted the six movements of this work, I have been moved by the power of the message of God’s Word in the texts. They are honest and transparent reflections of Israel’s journey and of the presence of God’s Spirit in that journey. They are filled with an optimism and hope that, even in the most difficult of circumstances, God has promised to be present and to guide. As a result, these words are not just words for ancient Israel, but they are for us today as we claim the promises of God in our own journeys of life and faith.

At the Association Free Lutheran Bible School (AFLBS), we prepare students for a life of faith in Jesus Christ and faithful service in His kingdom. This is only possible through the power of the eternal and inerrant Word of God. At the heart of our program is two years of college-level biblical studies. When God’s truth is their foundation, our students learn to serve God and their neighbor

throughout their lives.

What We TeachOur fully-accredited academic program provides in-depth instruction from Genesis to Revelation. Courses cover Christian doctrine, church history, missions, apologetics, and practical ministry. Our experienced and caring faculty challenge students through engaging instruction. They get to know students on a personal level and pray for their spiritual wellbeing. Students have found the training to be applicable to the various vocations that God calls them to after AFLBS. A growing number of institutions accept AFLBS credits, depending on a student’s individual educational objectives.

During two years of study at AFLBS, students discover:

· How to interpret and apply Scripture

· God’s plan of salvation throughout the entire Bible

· How to share and defend their faith

· Biblical roles and responsibilities in the congregation

· A biblical worldview that provides a foundation for the Christian life

Student LifeThe community of believers at AFLBS is united in their love of God and His gospel. Students participate in various activities together including intramural sports, chapel services, artistic clubs, and dorm devotions. Lifelong friendships are formed as students journey together through life’s ups and downs. Resident staff provide mentorship and care for both spiritual and social needs. We look forward to breaking ground on a new student life center which will include a fitness center, a coffee bar, and a full gym. We pray that this project will only enhance the positive experience that students have on our campus.

MinistryAt AFLBS, students are encouraged to put their biblical training into practice. We recognize that God gifts each of us with unique abilities and passions. Students find opportunities to use these gifts in a variety of ministries, including musical teams, senior care, inner-city ministry, international mission trips, and partnerships with local congregations. Each year students can apply to a summer ministry team and travel the country teaching VBS or singing.

Music at AFLBSAFLBS provides a unique setting for students to grow in their musical abilities with many opportunities to praise the Lord through music. Whether you are just beginning to sing or whether you are planning to major in music, there is a place for you. This year over 78% of the student body is participating in a musical ensemble or taking private music lessons. Large musical groups include Proclaim Choir, Concert Choir, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Handbell Ensemble. Smaller groups, or Gospel Teams, include two worship teams, a mixed quartet, men’s quartet, women’s trio, and a mixed ensemble. Private music lessons are also available to students, including voice, piano, violin, and organ.
