May 2020 From the Commodore
Greetings to all from the Commodore,
Here we are going into the 5th month of the year
and we have yet to race this year or get
together as a club due to the Covid Virus, and
the stay in place decree from the powers that
be. I hope everyone is healthy and happy. I look
forward to getting back to normal and our
club’s events.
I would like to thank all that have kept
everything going in my absence. I hear A dock
has got new corners and the club work party
was a success as well as the meeting. Some new
members have applied so we are growing. Our
finances look good and we are looking forward
to improving the other docks and grounds. As
soon as the stay in place orders are lifted, and
more than 10 people can again meet together,
we will continue our club functions. Hope to see
you all there and some new faces in the coming
months.
Debbie and I will be returning home from
Florida on May 7th . We miss the club and our
friends and are ready for this to be over.
Stay safe!
Your Commodore,
Bill Hold
From the Vice Commodore
I hope everyone and everyone’s family and
friends are doing well. We are still in the midst
of Covid 2020, there is still a buzz of activity at
the club, as we are practicing social distancing
guidelines. This past weekend we held our
scheduled work party and board meeting.
During the board meeting we decided that we
would go ahead with this month's long distance
race, with the skippers ensuring the safety of
his crew.
One of my responsibilities that I take pleasure
in, is to announce and welcome our newest
members. This month we have three new
members: George Kastanias, Daniel Henson, and
Thomas Liale. Let’s all introduce ourselves if we
see an unfamiliar face, and welcome them as
part of the Rome Sail Club family.

Only two sailors, in my experience, never ran
aground. One never left port and the other
was an atrocious liar.

From the Dockmaster
I hope you and your family are well. As many of
you know, Rebecca is in New York and I can
report she is doing fine. When all this
Coronavirus began, she said she could not sit
idly by and not put her talent to work to help. I
was not excited about it, but I knew better than
to try to talk her out of it. Though I was
worried before she left she says she has plenty
of PPE and I know she is well trained to do what
it takes to stay safe. As of now she is well.
It is that time again when slips that are
available are up for bid. Norbert has offered to
post the list at the clubhouse and you can
contact me or Norbert to add your name to the
list. The following slips are available.
A-05, A-30, B-05 and B-08. If you would like to
be considered for any or all the slips, either go
to the clubhouse and add your name to the bid
sheet, also you can contact Norbert or myself
and we will be happy to have you added to the
list. I am working at the Home Depot so if I do
not answer your call, leave me a message.
I bid you fair skies ahead!
May life be kind.
Dockmaster,
Glenn Segrest
From the Race Comm. Chair
Hello everyone, we are starting to get out and
do a few things that are somewhat normal, like
everyone wearing a mask, not shaking hands,
standing back six feet from others, ducking
down a finger pier when someone is walking
down the dock, are all becoming normal. Under
these circumstances we are now living, who
knows what normal will become. Please use
good judgment and follow social distancing
practices.
We will start the race season with our first Long
Distance Race Saturday May 16, skippers
meeting at 09:00 race start at 10:00. There will
be no social gathering and the Alabama social
distancing orders will apply. Please use good
judgment in interacting with others, crew
choices should be someone you are in close
contact with normally. Your choice to
participate and choice of crew are your
responsibility and at your own risk, please wear
a mask while on shore and it is advised that you
wear a mask during the race.
Skippers meeting will be held outside on the
lawn and I will fill out the participants sheet
rather than handing it around.
The race schedule will proceed as on the 2020
club schedule with the exception of the Weiss
Lake Regatta, due to the uncertainty of the
situation that Regatta will not be held this year
and will be a club only Regatta and be the
makeup race for the spring Regatta we missed.
There will be no Friday night or Saturday socials
during regatta weekends and social distancing
should be observed during all club events.
The club race schedule will be subject to any

changes in Alabama state restrictions or as the
RSC board feels necessary.
May God bless you and keep you.

From the Purser
Please be advised that the May statements will
be in the mail this week. We still have 8
members that have not paid their 2020
membership dues. They will find the late charge
on their statements.
We are getting estimates to refurbish B and C
Docks, to bring them in the same shape A dock
is now. If our financial condition permits it we
would like to have both of them done.

No report.
Parliamentarian,
Tom Long From the Member at Large
It would be nice if those members who have
boats for sale at the club puts signs, # and price
and please list them in the news letter.
Club has a yellow McGregor 23 for sale, no
trailer, and has a motor for $1200.
Member at Large,
Marvin Czentnar
From the Yeoman
To say life has been different lately would be an
understatement, but somehow we are finding
ways to adjust to the changes. It often feels to
me as if time is standing still. Conversations and
friendships bring a sense of normalcy and
comfort to the soul. It has been so nice to run
into some of you at the club even if it is at a
social disctance.
As always, please send any news or articles you
would like to include in our next newsletter.
Stay safe and stay healthy!
Yeoman,

Classifieds
● Want to replace your old dock lines?
I have old life safety ropes for sale. $2 for 10 meter / 33 foot length. This rope has reached
the end of its lifespan as a life safety rope, but still has life left. Two types available, 11mm
(7/16”) Nylon and Polyester. Not good for a line, sheet, or halyard on a boat, but would
make a great dockline.

Many boats are for sale at the marina, take a walk down the docks to see which ones are available
