What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them
would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert
and go after the lost one until he finds it?...
Or what woman having ten coins and losing one
would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it?
And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors
and says to them,
‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.’
My Dear Friends in Christ,
I am writing these words from St. Peter's Square as we prepare for the Gen-
eral Audience with our Holy Father, Pope Francis. The picture shows St. Peter's
Basilica with the banner of Saint Teresa of Calcutta from her canonization last
Sunday. The contrast is great between the grand baroque facade and the simple
woman who gave her whole life to God, giving every day until it hurt. This con-
trast should remind us that we can do something beautiful for God no matter
how small and insignificant it seems. I am keeping you close in prayer, here, and
at every place we visit on our Pilgrimage.
Our readings today are always a challenge as they call us to show God's
mercy. It is clear from these readings, and of all the words of Jesus, that the call
for mercy goes out to each and every one. This is especially difficult for us as we
celebrate the anniversary of the horrible, tragic terrorist attacks in New York,
Washington and Pennsylvania. That these attacks were perpetrated in the name
of God makes them exponentially more horrendous. Yet, even here, we are
called to show the mercy of God. I must admit, that this is difficult for me, which
only makes the call more urgent. The joy of extending that mercy that Jesus
describes in the parables of our Gospel are an opportunity to share in the heart
of the Father. The greater the sin, the greater the challenge, the more God re-
joices when we return.
Distance in time or place may not lessen the challenge we face; both as we
seek to know, and to show the mercy of God. As our Holy Father reminds us
often, according to the mind and the heart of Christ Himself, this call to mercy is
only the beginning of a renewed and deepened life in Christ. In striving to offer
the mercy of God, we are called out of, and beyond ourselves. It is only here
that we can truly begin to experience the full depths of God's love. The struggle
to offer this mercy and forgiveness to those who perpetrated such attacks re-
minds us that this is not merely a theological principle or spiritual "mumbo jum-
bo." It is a struggle we must face daily; but, no matter how hard, is always worth
the effort.
Again, please know of my thoughts and prayers for you, your intentions
and all of your families. I pray, most especially, for those who are sick, those
who are struggling and those who are despairing. I ask that you remember me
and your pilgrims in your prayers as well.
Peace,

Day 332: EVERETT IS HOME!!!
Everett is home and with his entire
family again! Our Little Warrior's im-
mune system is weak still, so he must
remain in isolation and cannot see
any unscheduled visitors, but the en-
tire family is so grateful to be back together. The excitement
of their little brother being home hasn't worn off yet...these
siblings are loving every minute. Everett's journey is by no
means over, and your support is still valued immensely. Stay
tuned for upcoming fundraisers and events, and thank you so
much! Currently 64% of the $100,000 goal has been raised.
These funds are used to pay for Everett's transplant related
expenses. Visit www.cotaforeveretts.com for an update and
to donate.

Middletown Food Bank Needs Spotlight on our Gardens A recent project in the Meditation Garden involved regrading
the area outside the windows of the Meditation Walk where the
Stations of the Cross are located. The Landscape committee
planned this summer project, and many people accomplished
this task on a hot August Tuesday evening!
We are grateful for Donnie Poole bringing much needed equip-
ment, and for his assistance in executing the plan for best possi-
ble drainage. We are equally grateful for the eight people who
did the hard work of digging plants, removing soil, and tilling
the area to properly regrade this beautiful garden tucked be-
tween the walls of our building. As you look through the win-
dows toward “Jesus and the Children” admire their great job!
Special thanks to: Kevin Coyne, Jim McIntyre and sons Caleb and
James, Donnie Poole, Greg and Sue Rausch, Mike Spillane, and
Dave Tolino.
New plants and shrubs will be added this autumn as we contin-
ue work to bring beauty and peace into our church garden.
Mark your calendar for our next “short Saturday” (8 to 11 a.m.)
on Saturday October 1st. Come join us!

Annapolis 101: Do you know how many life, justice and social
concerns decisions happen on the state and local level? Do you
feel your views are adequately reflected in Maryland laws and
policies? Do you know who your state delegates and repre-
sentatives are? Do they know who you are? If you answered
no to all or some of these questions, then it might be time for
“Annapolis 101”. Come join us for an informative and practical
workshop that will familiarize you with the legislative process in
Maryland, introduce you to the best practices of advocating
your values – all within a Christian vision of fulfilling our call to
be leaven in our society. Session at Holy family on Monday,
Sept. 19th, 7:00 p.m. Come join us. Maryland needs you!

Taize prayer service will be held at St. James in Boonsboro, on
Friday September 23, 7:30 p.m. The Taize community is an
ecumenical Christian community in Burgundy, France, which
has developed a unique musical style for singing in groups.
Simple phrases, usually lines of Scripture, are repeated and
sometimes layered. Calm and contemplative, Taize musical
services can be a powerful tool for centering prayer.
St. James will be offering a Taize musical service the fourth
Friday of every month, at 7:30 pm. Can't sing? No problem!
Just come and absorb the prayerful atmosphere, reflecting on
the scriptures from the coming Sunday's reading.
