A SCENE IN SPIRIT-LAND. GIVES' TIlKOrnn MI!.1.. SWEET, PUKPORTIX'f; TO HE EV MKS. HEMAN'S. As the unclouded splendor of day is passing in- to the mellowed light of its sunset beauty, a band of happy Spirits were reposing beside a sparkling fountain, whose clear and pellucid waters reflect ten thousand colors of changing beauty as they sparkle in the ambient light. Flowers of immortal fra- grance give forth sweet perfumes to the celestial air, and majestic trees whose foliage is of living green, spread out their arms inviting to repose and meditation, birds of rare beauty whose notes give forth sweet music, such as is never heard by mor- tal cars, add a charm to the pure and happy scene. A low and gentle melody breathes upon the air. I look up, and behold a company of Spi- rits are approaching to join the ones already pre- sent. Their robes are bright and shining, and their countenances are radiant with the light which cometh from God. The wisdom of the holy pre- sence sets upon each countenance, making it fair and peaceful to look upon, and yet they look gentle and loving. No shadow of earthly passions re- mains graven upon their seraph-faces. There is a glow of light, a gladdening, blissful feeling pervad- ing the atmosphere in which they move. They are approaching the Spirits who are waiting to receive them. And now, they greet each other with a glad smile of welcome. A deep and unutterable j oy seems to be welling up within each heart as it greets and welcomes the other. And those who have last come sit beside the fountain also, clasping each others’ hands. They now bid each other re- count to their companions the result of their labors, for they have been upon earth laboring earnestly ■and unceasingly, each in a different direction, and they now assemble to speak of that which they have accomplished as faithful workers, whose labor is that of love and undying hope in the redemption of their fellow-man. One says, beloved teacher the task which I had to fulfil was hard. I spoke the words of wisdom which were given me. I gave the lessons which were given me. Some would listen, and some would turn away unheeding, forgetting that truth could come through other than those who were clad with authority which the law giveth. But some hungry souls who were thirsty for a draught of eternal truth received the words gladly and freely, and the}- became joyous in the knowledge of eternal and progressing wis- dom. And when the jewels are gathered together, the beaut}- of their Spirits will be drops in the cup of my gladness. And another said, I went to earth full of mighty resolutions to do the will of my Father, to turn the hearts of men from mam- mon, to the purifying and ennobling influence of the knowledge of the love of God to them through the years of their past forgetfulness, their slumber- ing unconsciousness. And I thought I would speak with the voice of an entreating angel, that I would stir up the depths of their Spirits to see the dark- ness of their ways, the downward tendency of their paths. I approached the young; they would not hear me ; their future was opening before them in rose-tinted colors, their passions and strengthening energies were gaining daily force from the reckless impulses which hurried them .dong; few would listen to my pleading voice, but ■aid as in ans-.v r to my entreaties: “ time enough, we are ■.•■'ung. we are happy, we are striving to become leaders of the people, to rule the multitude, to sway the great mas«, to step in the places of those who are daily going out from amongst us ; curb not our ambition, clip not our soaring wings in their upward flight, hut let us speed onward, ever onward, until we have reached the highest pinnacle of worldly ambition, and when all our whines are satisfied, when our hearts no longer yearn and struggle for worldly aggrandizement, when we gain that for which we are laboring, then we will listen to your pleading voice, then we will put the world beneath our feet and turn our thoughts to Heaven.” [ passed from the young to the old. Some would hear me doubtingly, mis- trusting the- sound to he that of earth, so long had its delusive power enchained their souls and kept them from all that was bright, that was fair or heavenly in their nature, that they could not raise their faith nor extend their grasp be}-ond the sphere where all their affinities were enshrined. Prayers they could utter with their lips, but they were not the fresh outgushing of the heart, but they were those which had been given by rule to be repeated as a form through other lips. It was sad to leave them so unbelieving and yet so needy, so ignorant of the life which they were soon to enter, and yet, 0 , kind and loving guide, I had to pass on ; my pre- cious time could not bo thus wasted in talking to hearts of stone! The idols of gold and silver ever inf..copied the Spirit-forms, the Spirit-voice from their hearts, and verily, I said within my soul, “ it i : not well that men should grow old in forgetful- ness of their higher and eternal life, for, as man’s time becomes shorter upon the sphere where his heart hath its only abiding place, he would Iain linger forever within the precincts which only seem to him as the brightest heaven which his soul can aspire to, and when ¿he unwillingly leaves it, his soul finds no sympathy, no pleasure in the opening future before him.” And I again spoke to the youth and said : O ! young man or young maiden, pause and think ; thy heart is warm and bounding, the flowers of thy youth are blooming brightly, and making thee glad in the sunlighted beauty of their gorgeous coloring ; but the flowers of thy youth will perish, many of the hopes which thou wouldst realize will prove delusive, the vain sha- dows of thy own longing, and mock thee at last with bitter disappointment. Give car now, to the appeal of love, hearken to the soft and pleading voice of angel-lips. Beings etherial and pure, lov- ing and anxious, surround thy youthful steps; turn, turn not away, shut not thy heart against their gentle influences, but lift up thine eyes and ask thy Father to be the guide of thy youth, and He will surround thee with such guides as will uphold thee in the hour of trial, and save thee from the great pitfall of temptation. And when thou art old, thou canst look upward with a brightening eye and a living knowledge that there is within thee a hope of eternal life strong and undying. And death shall not dim thy happiness, but it will open to thee the unrevealed book, whose pages are all unfolding one after another to thy astonished soul, the infinite wisdom, the boundless and unchanging love of thy heavenly Father. And I tell thee, O beloved guide, that some did stop and harken to my voice, and I placed upon their brows a talisman of hope, a wreath of undying flowers, which only Spirits might see, and when they approached those hearts, they would draw near and call them blessed; for lo, the still small voice of love had found an echo within their hearts. I blessed them, and their pathways shall be angel-lighted, and they shall give to others consolation and comfort through their short journey of life on earth. Another Spirit now speaks. It is a female.— Her eyes are meek and dove-like; tears have often bedewed her cheeks, and her Spirit hath been chastened and purified through suffering and great sorrow. She said : “ 0 loving guide, I come back from my earth journey, thankful that God hath permitted so feeble and unworthy a Spirit to join hands with those who love the cause of their Fath- er so well. My first mission was to seek out the sorrowing, the broken-hearted ones of earth. 0 1 how many, how nnmberless they are, and how I wished that every tear which came forth from the fountains of my heart, could he turned into a bless- ing for them. I lingered about them long. I whis- pered to their hearts of peace and hope. I spoke to them of the place where all tears are wiped from the mourners’ eyes, and when a sorrowing mother grieved for her child, I brought the idol of her heart, and set it before her, that it might point her upwards, and then, I told her that a link had been established between her and heaven, a sym- pathetic chord which would ever draw her there, but she must keep it untainted. She must not snap it asunder by the cares and engrossing loves of earth. Her heart grew more hoping, and now she is not without the strength of hope. I then spoke to a sad and erring daughter, whose crushed and weary Spirit desired the rest of obli- vion. Her hopes had once been lighted by the trusting faith of love, and her poor Spirit had learn- ed to curse the name, to wish that it might he blotted forever out of the records of Heaven. A blight had fallen upon her young life. O, weary and sad were the upbraidmgs of her Spirit, when conscious at times of its true but degraded posi- tion. She would have courted death with her own hand, but the future was fearful, and when she had thrown herself prostrate upon the earth, I drew near and whispered to her poor lacerated, despair- ing soul words of hope beyond the grave. She could not at first hear me, but gradually a great quiet and peace fell upon her Spirit, and she thought she was in a dream, a dream of childhood and happiness, of innocence, and love. I bent over her shattered form, and spoke in whispers which her heart might hear. I told her of repentance upon earth, yea, and of hope beyond the earth.— YYith words of entreaty and soothing sympathy I gently led her Spirit into the paths of duty, of rec- titude and virtue, where strength would be given her to live a repentant life. O, how she wept and wished she might die while the happy dream last- ed. But she arose and went her way, resolving to profit by the warning which had been breathed to her Spirit. Her life now seemed of some worth, and as I left her, “ friends” whose Spirits had long been unable to approach her, nestled close beside her. The work of healing had commenced in her heart, and with the assistance of Spirits, and of friends in the form who will receive her, she will yet rise up purified and blessed, and enter upon her Spirit-life with a hoping, throbbing joy, thanking God for His mercy, and meeting face to face with those bright beings, whose dewey breath, whose warm and striving hearts were exerted to raise her up. And next, I visited the poor orphan, crying for bread, shivering with cold, uncared for and suffer- ing. How cold and cheerless the life before that orphan ! I looked, and near him were his parents sad and unhappy, because of the misery of their child. O, sad sight! there were none to give it bread, but the cold unwilling hand called charity, and on all sides were snares and pitfalls, everything to mislead the little wanderer, and nothing to cher- ish, to warm the little hungry heart with the full- ness of affection, and no arm to protect from sur- rounding dangers. When night had come upon the earth, and no covering or scarce a shelter could bo found by the little waif floating on its tempest- tost bosom, I drew near and blessed the orphan ; I pressed him to my heart, and prayed to my Father in heaven to send angel-guides to watch over the immortal germ, to influence some benevolent heart to cherish the little withering flower, to give it some bosom to which its little heart might nestle in the spring-time of its life and twine around here - after with love and affection. I watched him while he slept in his infantile innocence and desolation, and I said: “ I pray thee, 0 Father of the father- less, to cast a strong bulwark about this innocent one, that he may live an upright and holy life, and learn to'call thee his Father, and know thee as such forever.” Many sympathetic Spirit-friends were gathered round the lone child, and each one resolved to do a part to assist in leading that child aright, through life’s checkered path. He was con- ducted through the aid of Spirits to a sympathetic heart; the neglected one was cared for; a kindly hand was stretched forth, and the little one’s head now slumbers beneath a friendly roof. Thou wilt say, gentle teacher, that my prayers were answered, unworthy as I am. Many, many scenes of suffer- ing and of misery, of desolation, and disappoint- ment were witnessed by me while my earth-jour - ney lasted, and my Spirit shall watch through their lives the good work which was given me the power to begiD, and I will bless and magnify the goodness of my Father for His unbounded mercy to me, and I shall stand ready to greet each one as they enter their Spirit-home, and tell them of what mercy and protecting care hath followed their lives; for they will yet shine bright and glowing with immor- tal purity among those who have been redeemed from sin and suffering through the love of the Father, and in the light of eternity shall our Spirit see what the little seed hath grown to, which was so small as to be almost unseen ; its rays will be- come those of refulgent light and dazzling beauty, as time develops in its unceasing progress the im- mortal attributes which belong to each unfolding germ. Another speaks who has left earth. I came, said he, to report my work as only begun. Lo, I have wandered up and down, and I’ve penetrated into the secret recesses of man’s most hidden mo- tives. I have stood in the sacred places of earth, where man does lip-homage to his Creator, and I’ve watched the word as it fell coldly and without power upon the hearts of those who heard it, for verily, pomp and circumstances are but the impres- sions of an hour, and the sound of many words but created a confusion where they were not un- derstood or rightly applied. I found no resting place for the sole of my foot in the structures which had been erected by the hand of man, as the altar whence his prayers should ascend to heaven as a sweet incense before the throne of God. The cold and heavy atmosphere oppressed and retarded my ardor, and with difficulty I pene- trated the gross element which was filled with so many thoughts whose birth was of earth. Sad and dispirited, I sought a willing ear somewhere else. I sought the home of the lowly. I approached the couch of the suffering, and verily, they received me, they repelled me not, but with heartfelt tears they received the comforting influence from my Spirit to theirs, and where the humble and upright man spoke forth the thoughts which come freight- ed with truth and everlasting light of heaven I stood by, and breathed strength, and hope, and comfort to his soul. For the simple and honest child of Nature was more receptive, more congenial to the influences of indwelling light than those whom forms, and ceremonies, and outward garbs of piety had surrounded by their gross and heaven- defying influence. Where mirth and revelry, the dance and song, where wine and all its exciting in- fluences held their sway, my voice could not be heard, my footsteps were turned aside. Sad and dispirited, I left the scene of mirth and revelry. I sought the lowly cabin of the poor, the oppressed child of slavery, and as he breathed his simple prayer, a Spirit stood by, and took it up and laid it before the Father’s throne as a sweet smelling in- cense of gratitude. I said, “ pray on, hope on, poor slave; thy bondage is of earth, not of heaven; thy poor bleeding heart will be freer and brighter and far happier in the Spirit-home than the one who calls thee slave and lashes thee with many stripes of suffering. My Spirit grew glad as I gaz- ed ; I grew stronger to proceed on m y mission of love. And then, I beheld another poor, ignorant, untaught child of slavery, whose heart had never been taught other than bitter and resentful feelings, the springs of whose love had been turned into streams of hate, because of the oppression of the task master, because of the chains which cut the flesh and the bonds which held the soul down on a level with the brute. O, sad and dreary picture! I strove to breathe some hope, some comfort into the poor wayward desponding heart. I whispered, “ child of toil and captivity, there is a brighter sun shining for thee beyond the starry heavens; there are peaceful homes, placid and fair, where thou shalt yet rest thy weary lim bs; there are angel- friends whom the fetters of earth no longer bind, waiting to welcome thee, and deck thee with flow- ers to cheer up thy sad and desponding Spirit” And they also thought they had'a beautiful dream. And they wondered in their darkness if heaven was so beautiful a place, and if angels were so beau- tiful and bright O, that low whisper, that softly breathed prayer, left an impress behind which no oppression can efface. And I strove to approach those whom they call their masters. I strove, and would fain have mov- ed their hearts with pity and charity. I would have besought them not to imprison the immortal Spirit which God hath made free. - 1 appealed to their tenderness, and wished to move their Spirits to act in accordance with the dictates of Nature ; but the circumstances of custom and of law had riveted its chains so firmly about their hearts as to darken their better judgment and render them deaf to the appeals which their own hearts often uncon- sciously made to them. I blessed those who were gentle and kind to the flesh and blood which their money had purchased, and I prayed to my Father to open their hearts to the soft tones of His loving mercy, and make them the instruments of giving life eternal to those who were their bondsmen, for I saw that it was the sin of custom more than of necessity, and I said within my soul, when the heart hath been opened by the Spiritual unfolding of true light and loving practical works, they will see their error and the gentle persuasion of the still small voice from within will guide them aright, and the oppressed shall be cared for and lifted up, and their Spirits shall be made as fair and as pure, as trusting and loving in the simplicity of their faith as those who have raised them. Terily, the light of each good deed becomes a star of rejoic ing in the home of the Spirit to greet it at its en- trance. Therefore, beloved teacher, I come back from my mission hopiDg, for a power hath been breathed upon the people, a voice hath thrill- ed their hearts, a feeling unknown and undefined by mortals is pervading, is expanding the great beating, pulsing heart of humanity. It only shows a ripple here and there, but the ripples will grow into waves, and the winds will take up the story, and bear the glad tidings over the face of the earth. And so I returned rejoicing with exceeding great joy, happy to return and work out my part in the great struggle _of right over all. Another now speaks. Her floating robes sparkle in the soft and mellow light even as gems of beauty and rare brilliancy. Her brow is bound with a chaplet of lilies. Her voice is soft and musical as the tones of an selian harp; its vibrations thrill through every listener as the touch of a fine-toned instrument. Yea, said she, I come from earth glad and rejoicing, m y friends. They welcomed me with open hearts and outstretched .hands ¡ they clasped my Spirit-form to their hearts, for they knew me, they remembered my voice as in time of yore, and when I spoke of my home beyond the blue firmament and the twinkling stars, when I told them of the loving Father who permitted us to return to cheer and to comfort, to love, to guide and direct, they hailed my approach with joy un- speakable ; their hearts became one great temple of rejoicing in their newly found life, for lo, they ex- claimed! Heaven hath come to earth, and made earth seem bright and glad. It is within us, it is beyond us, it is all around us. And the mourners were comforted, and the sick were healed, and the doubting, faltering ones were gently led along by a hand which was strong and able to guide. And the glad tidings ran faster and swifter; it was ta- ken up and conveyed from heart to heart, and all who responded to its call, were made partakers of a living joy forever within their reach. The veil was rent asunder which had kept the loving caress of friends so long unfelt, so long unknown, whose labors are now being rewarded by being recognized and loved. And I told them also to beware of those who had left the earth sad and unhappy, whose influence had often unconsciously led them to commit errors at which their souls would shud- der if they knew their source. I directed them to look up with the eye of trust, with the heart of entreaty, and love to their Father, to surround them with holy teachers, whose love and wisdom would lighten their pathway and make them a light unto others. I told them that truth bom of God was a pure and beautiful gem, and wherever it found a resting place, wherever its bright flowers could blossom, it would beautify and strengthen, it would make the inner light of all hidden mysteries reveal themselves clear and undimmed to the inquir- ing soul, for what now seemed dark, enveloped in mists, and not perceived by the awakened soul, would in its unfolding progress become a source of infinite delight and awakening wisdom through the growth of that precious flower ; and to them who received me, I gave the words which thou gavest me, and many Spirits joined with me, and blessed and hallowed the scene. It was divine and heaven- ly to behold Spirits and mortals mingling heart with heart, for I saw the earthly Spirit grow better and purer. I saw it become more expansive and loving, more like the little child before its heaven- born nature has been corrupted and corroded by the soul of selfishness. But it did not take from the brightness of the Spirit to give to the mortal, but greater power and stronger light overshadowed and surrounded the Spirit, that more might be giv- en the mortal. The result of my mission to earth, kind teacher, is ended for the present, and if thou wilt but give us thy approving smile, if thou wilt place thy hand upon our heads and bless us with the Father’s blessing, if thou wilt guide and direct our footsteps again among earth’s children, we will return cheerful and glad, and as thou dost recede from our view, floating in the light of thy purity, we shall hear the soft and gentle murmur of thy voice still approving and upholding us with thy ad- vice in the tasks which have been given us. Thou art great in wisdom, thou art benignant and kind, thy heart doth throb with every heavenly emotion which cometh from God, and we know that thou dost send thine influences to earth, and thy sympa- thies through us, who can mingle with earth’s at-i mosphere when thou couldst not Therefore, bless us holy enes forever. And forevermore, we shall labor unceasingly for the love of the Father, which cometh down through the channels of his mercy. Dost thou see now, that the Spirits are parting each to go their respective ways, and dost thou hear the words which are spoken by the unfolded wisdom of those Spirits who have come from their bright but distant home to counsel and strengthen those whose task it hath been to develop and make use- ful in the sphere which they left, the labors which they are fitted to perform ? One speaks in a gentle yet commanding voice, and says: Thou hast done well, my children; thou hast been faithful and unwearied; each hath performed a part, and each hath given to earth some light, some awakening hope. In the name of the Father we bless thee; return upon thine ange- lic mission, and perform it well, the harvest is truly great, but the laborers are few ; we will pray that the Lord of the harvest would send forth more la- borers to gather up the jewels, to brush away the rough and unsightly covering which envelops many, that none may be lost or overlooked. Thy sympa- thies are still with earth; thy labors must be on earth until others are prepared to fill thy place, whose sympathies with it are closer than thine; meanwhile those chords which draw thee thither have drawn thy friends up to thee. And now labor for the reward which thou knowest is beyond, and when thine earthly mission is accomplished, the future shall be one bright vista of unfolding glo- ries, and thou shalt be partakers of eternal light and wisdom, and bask forever in the sunlight of the smile of thy heavenly Father. SLEEP. “ No man ■who sinks to sleep at night Knows what his dreams shall b e; No man can tell what wonder-sight Ills Inner eye shall see.” [Epic of the Starr]/ E ta ten. “ The Spiritual ministry of Night Is all unknown. Day rules the sensuous mind, But Night the fettered Spirit doth unbind. And through the silver palace-gates of light, In dream and trance she bears tbe soul away To the wide landscape of the inner day. Her cities are the stars, and she delights To lead mankind in vision through the deep, 'TC'here angels their mild mysteries closely keep From outer sense; she kindles up the lights That guide her guests in joumeyings through th6 heaven; The electric waves of ether bear them on; Shafted with fire their arrowy path Is given, Till they are bosomed in the horizon, TThose orb of quickening is the Spirit-Sun. The souls of men are wanderers while they sleep ; And life’s continuous current ever flows, ■Whether to outward bliss the pulses leap, Or languid glide in silence and repose. And could one mortal tell of all he sees, Recalling Night’s close-curtained mysteries, The breeze that bears to heaven man’s common thought Would bear such mighty gladness, and be fraught With such enhancement, that the skies would thrill In sympathy divine. One little rill From the full ocean of interior bliss , Flowing through earth, would change earth's wilder- ness Into a new Elyeium; Ecaten would smile Fam iliar as the roses all the while''' [Lyric of the Horning Land . There are two great movements which in alter- nate succession rule and pervade all created Na- ture, the systolic and the diastolic. The contrac- tion of the living heart, by which it forces outward the vital current, and its succeeding expansion, by which it draws backward within itself the return- ing streams, is the correspondence in the human form of this universal law. The ebb and flow of the great tides of the ocean, now flooding the shores and bays, and now withdrawing its waters into its own bosom, is a sublimer illustration of the same. And as all outward Nature is but the cor- respondence of Spiritual realities, a manifestation to the outward senses of the laws of Spiritual life, when once we have learned this language, Nature will he to us no longer mute and meaningless, but even the rudest and least perfect forms of matter find a tongue and speech in which to address man- kind. Then truly there will be no speech nor lan- guage where the voice of Wisdom and the melody of Love will not be heard breaking their long si- lence and breathing forth their everlasting hymn to the quickened ear of each living Spirit. Day wakens man to outward life. Morning with its breezy call summons to activity in the ex- ternal sphere. And as each bird withdraws its bill from beneath its sheltering wing and pours forth its matin note, as the flowers unfold their glad leaves to the flushing beams, so man feels his Spirit drawn to his accustomed toil and finds truest content when performing his allotted labor. And thus onward through the hours of toil, growing ever more positive, more bent upon the accomplish- ment of his task, till the sun reaches his meridian height; but as that luminary declines in the calm West, and, one by one, the evening stars dot with their diamond points the azure cope of Night, a change, manifest even in the external organization, comes over the resolute and eager toiler of the morning. A milder divinity now seems to rule his destioy. A soft hand is laid upon his form.— Gently he is led to his couch of repose. An influ- ence soothing and sweet comes like the falling dew. Each muscle is relaxed ; his eye closes upon the outer world. His ear no longer drinks in each floating sound. The fragrance of a thousand flow- ers in vain unlock their perfumes. As outward consciousness and memory fade and become dim, the inner senses ope. W ith noiseless step, serene and calm as Night’s radiant queen or fairest stars, his Spirit-friends draw near. Now is their hour of gentlest sway. By day his outer will controlled and they poured forth in streaming influxes essential life and strength into each fibre of his form and organ of his mind; now the Spiritual efflux ebbs again towards its unbounded deep. By day our Spirit-friends come forth to us, by night we return to them. Societies vast and multitudinous as the congregated hosts of many armies receive ns with open arms, enroll our names as one of theirs.— Then the germs of mighty deeds, hereafter to blos- som into action and thoughts profound and keen, are inseminated into the chambers of the receptive mind. Then deathless affections are kindled upon the heart’s altars, and many a bereaved Spirit, lonely on earth, then clasps the object of its inmost love. Hand in hand they wander through Elysian fields of blessedness and peace. Then, too, the mother, ever yearning towards her heart’s darlings, left in a cold and friendless world, is often permitted to draw forth their Spirits and enfold once more in her longing arms the ten der objects of her truest love. She leads them forth through meads of starry flowers and reposes with them on the green banks of slowly flowing streams; infusing many a sweet thought and pure sentiment into their minds and hearts, hereafter to flow forth in noblest acts, or be shrined within as a source of serene and sweetest joy. Thus parent and child, husband and wife, lover and beloved, meet in the realms of sleep; and those silent shades are forever vocal to the Spirit- ear with soft greetings, gentle responses and whis- pered consolation. By day we wander forth like hired laborers to our toilsome duties, and like them, spent and weary, we return home at evening, to mingle in dearer associations, and be refreshed by the gentle ministries of the cherished and beloved. O Nignt, in tby closo-cnrtained realms hearts meet TThom Death hath severed. "With thy ebon wrings Thou boverest o’er a sorrow-stricken world; And to tbe downy plumage of tby breast Thou welcomest the sons of sorest toiL Thou bathest in tby gentle dews not flowers Alone. Could the mysteries of that world be fully re- vealed to us, could the treasures of the internal memory be poured into the external, the poorest would be rich in inward experiences. And yet as the Spiritual degree of man’s mind becomes more and more opened, the external mind becomes more conscious of the interior life. And as man goes onward and upward in the pathway of a true and divine unfolding, (notin the spurious progression of a developed selfhood, which reigns in discordant spheres, and dazzles by its false glitter many un- wary minds in the external,) he comes more and more into the possession of that eternal inheritance which the Father hath provided. And thus, as he is prepared for it, and can bear it, new wonders will be ever dawning upon his consciousness, till the earth-life becomes swallowed up in the divine.. “ 'When the perfect man is come, Earth and heaven shall be bis hom e; In alternate periods be In them both shall seem and be. Heaven by night and earth by day Shall he hold his wonder-way."' HzspERrs. ----------• ---------- T iie IV inter or the Heart. —Let it not come upon you. Live so that good angels may protect you from this terrible evil— the winter of the heart Let no chilling influence freeze up the founda- tions of sympathy and happiness in its depths ; no cold burthen settle over its withered hopes, like snow on the faded flowers; no rude blasts of dis- content moan and shriek through the desolate chambers. Your life paths may lead you amid trials, which for a time seem utterly to impede your progress, and shut out the very light of heaven from your anx- ious gaze. Penury takes the place of ease and plenty; your luxurious home may be exchanged for a single lowly room— the soft couch for the straw pallet __ the rich viands for the coarse food of the poor. __ Summer friends may forsake you, and the unpity- ing pass you with scarce a look or word of com- passions. Y'ou may be found to toil wearily, steadily on, to earn a livelihood; you may encounter fraud and the base avarice which would extort the last larth- ing till you well nigh turn in disguss from your fellow beings. Death may sever the dear ties that bind 3-ou to earth, and leave you in fearful darkness. That noble manly boy, the sole hope of 3-our declining 3-ears, may be taken from 3-ou, while 3-our Spirit clings to him with a wild tenacit 3-, which even the shadow of the tomb cannot wholly subdue. But amid all these sorrows, do not come to the conclusion that nobody was ever so deeply afflicted as 3'ou are, and abandon every sweet anticipation of “ better days,” in the unknown future. Do not lose your faith in human excellence, be- cause your confidence has sometimes been betray- ed, nor believe that friendship is only a delusion, and love a bright phantom which glides from your grasp. Do not think that you are fated to be miserable because you are disappointed in your expecta- tions, and baffled in your pursuits. Do not de- clare that God had forsaken you, when 3 ’our way is hedged about with thorns, or sepine sinfully, when he calls your dear ones to the land beyond the grave. Keep a holy trust in heaven through every trial; bear adversity with fortitude, and look upward in hours of temptation and suffering. "When your locks are white, 3-our eyes dim, and 3-our limbs weary; when your steps falter on the verge of Death’s gloomy vale, still retain the freshness and buoyancy of Spirit which will shield you from the winter of the heart. As the unclouded splendor of day is passing in­to the mellowed light of its sunset beauty, a band of happy Spirits were reposing beside a sparkling fountain, whose clear and pellucid waters reflect ten thousand colors of changing beauty as they sparkle in the ambient light. Flowers of immortal fra­grance give forth sweet perfumes to the celestial air, and majestic trees whose foliage is of living green, spread out their arms inviting to repose and meditation, birds of rare beauty whose notes give forth sweet music, such as is never heard by mor­tal cars, add a charm to the pure and happy scene. A low and gentle melody breathes upon the air. I look up, and behold a company of Spi­rits are approaching to join the ones already pre­sent. Their robes are bright and shining, and their countenances are radiant with the light which cometh from God. The wisdom of the holy pre­sence sets upon each countenance, making it fair and peaceful to look upon, and yet they look gentle and loving. No shadow of earthly passions re­mains graven upon their seraph-faces. There is a glow of light, a gladdening, blissful feeling pervad­ing the atmosphere in which they move. They are approaching the Spirits who are waiting to receive them. And now, they greet each other with a glad smile of welcome. A deep and unutterable

j oy seems to be welling up within each heart as it greets and welcomes the other. And those who have last come sit beside the fountain also, clasping each others’ hands. They now bid each other re­count to their companions the result of their labors, for they have been upon earth laboring earnestly ■and unceasingly, each in a different direction, and they now assemble to speak of that which they have accomplished as faithful workers, whose labor is that of love and undying hope in the redemption of their fellow-man. One says, beloved teacher the task which I had to fulfil was hard. I spoke the words of wisdom which were given me. I gave the lessons which were given me. Some would listen, and some would turn away unheeding, forgetting that truth could come through other than those who were clad with authority which the law giveth. But some hungry souls who were thirsty for a draught of eternal truth received the words gladly and freely, and the}- became joyous in the knowledge of eternal and progressing wis­dom. And when the jewels are gathered together, the beaut}- of their Spirits will be drops in the cup of my gladness. And another said, I went to earth full of mighty resolutions to do the will of my Father, to turn the hearts of men from mam­mon, to the purifying and ennobling influence of the knowledge of the love of God to them through the years of their past forgetfulness, their slumber­ing unconsciousness. And I thought I would speak with the voice of an entreating angel, that I would stir up the depths of their Spirits to see the dark­ness of their ways, the downward tendency of their paths. I approached the young; they would not hear me ; their future was opening before them in rose-tinted colors, their passions and strengthening energies were gaining daily force from the reckless impulses which hurried them .dong; few would listen to my pleading voice, but ■aid as in ans-.v r to my entreaties: “ time enough, we are ■.•■'ung. we are happy, we are striving to become leaders of the people, to rule the multitude, to sway the great mas«, to step in the places of those who are daily going out from amongst us ; curb not our ambition, clip not our soaring wings in their upward flight, hut let us speed onward, ever onward, until we have reached the highest pinnacle of worldly ambition, and when all our whines are satisfied, when our hearts no longer yearn and struggle for worldly aggrandizement, when we gain that for which we are laboring, then we will listen to your pleading voice, then we will put the world beneath our feet and turn our thoughts to Heaven.” [ passed from the young to the old. Some would hear me doubtingly, mis­trusting the- sound to he that of earth, so long had its delusive power enchained their souls and kept them from all that was bright, that was fair or heavenly in their nature, that they could not raise their faith nor extend their grasp be}-ond the sphere where all their affinities were enshrined. Prayers they could utter with their lips, but they were not the fresh outgushing of the heart, but they were those which had been given by rule to be repeated as a form through other lips. It was sad to leave them so unbelieving and yet so needy, so ignorant of the life which they were soon to enter, and yet, 0 , kind and loving guide, I had to pass on ; my pre­cious time could not bo thus wasted in talking to hearts of stone! The idols of gold and silver ever inf..copied the Spirit-forms, the Spirit-voice from their hearts, and verily, I said within my soul, “ it i : not well that men should grow old in forgetful­ness of their higher and eternal life, for, as man’s time becomes shorter upon the sphere where his heart hath its only abiding place, he would Iain

linger forever w ith in the precincts w h ich only seem to him as the brightest heaven w hich h is soul can aspire to, and w hen ¿he un w illing ly leaves it, his soul finds no sym p ath y , no pleasure in the opening future before h im .” A nd I again spoke to the y o u th and said : O ! y o u n g m an or y o u n g m aiden, pause and think ; th y heart is warm and bounding, the flowers o f th y yo u th are bloom ing brightly, and m aking thee g lad in the sunlighted b eau ty of their gorgeous coloring ; bu t the flow ers o f thy yo u th will perish , m any o f the hopes w hich thou w ouldst realize w ill prove delusive, the vain sh a­dow s o f th y ow n longing, and m ock thee at last w ith bitter disappointm ent. G ive car now , to the appeal o f love, hearken to the soft and pleading voice o f angel-lips. B ein gs etherial and pure, lov­ing and anxious, surround th y youth fu l s te p s; turn, turn not aw ay, sh u t not th y heart against their gentle influences, but lift up thine e y es and ask th y Father to be the guide o f th y yo u th , and H e will surround thee w ith su ch gu id es as w ill uphold thee in the hour o f trial, and save thee from the great pitfall o f tem ptation. A nd w h en thou art old, thou canst look upward w ith a brightening ey e and a liv ing know ledge that there is w ith in thee a hope of eternal life strong and undying. A nd death shall not dim th y hap p iness, b u t it will open to thee the unrevealed book, w h ose p ages are all unfolding one after another to th y astonished soul, the infinite w isdom , the boundless and un ch anging love o f th y heaven ly Father. A nd I tell thee, O beloved guide, that som e did stop and harken to m y vo ice , and I placed upon their brow s a talism an o f hope, a wreath of un dying flowers, w h ich on ly Spirits m ight see, and w hen th ey approached those hearts, th e y w ou ld draw near and call them b le sse d ; for lo, the still sm all voice o f love had found an echo w ithin their hearts. I b lessed them , and their path w ays shall be angel-lighted, and th ey shall give to others consolation and com fort through their sh ort jo u rn ey o f life on earth.

A nother Spirit now speaks. I t is a fem ale.— H er e y es are m eek and d o v e -lik e ; tears have often bedew ed her cheek s, and her Spirit hath been chastened and purified through suffering and great sorrow. She said : “ 0 lovin g guide, I com e back from m y earth jo u rn ey , thankful that God hath perm itted so feeb le and un w orthy a Spirit to join hands w ith those w h o love the cause o f their F ath ­er so w ell. M y first m ission w as to seek out the sorrow ing, the broken-hearted ones o f earth. 0 1

how m any, how nnm berless th ey are, and how I w ished that every tear w h ich cam e forth from the fountains o f m y heart, could he turned into a b less­ing for them . I lingered about them long. I w h is ­pered to their hearts o f peace and hope. I spoke to them o f the place w h ere all tears are w iped from the m ourners’ eyes , and w hen a sorrow ing m other grieved for her child, I brought the idol o f her heart, and se t it before her, that it m igh t point her upw ards, and then, I told her that a link had been established betw een her and heaven, a sy m ­path etic chord w h ich w ou ld ever draw h er there, bu t sh e m u st keep it untainted. She m u st not snap it asunder b y the cares and engrossing loves o f earth. H er heart grew m ore hoping, and now sh e is not w ithou t the stren gth o f hope.

I then spoke to a sad and erring daughter, w hose crushed and w eary Spirit desired the rest o f obli­vion. H er h op es had once been ligh ted b y the trusting faith o f love, and her poor Spirit had learn­ed to curse the nam e, to w ish that it m ight he blotted forever out o f the records o f H eaven. A blight had fallen upon her y o u n g life. O, w eary and sad w ere the upbraidm gs o f h er Spirit, w hen conscious at tim es o f its true b u t degraded posi­tion. She w ou ld have courted death w ith her own hand, b u t the future w as fearful, and w h en sh e had throw n h erse lf prostrate upon the earth, I drew near and w hispered to her poor lacerated, despair­ing soul w ords o f hope beyon d the grave. She could not at first hear m e, b u t gradually a great quiet and peace fell upon her Spirit, and she thought sh e w as in a dream , a dream o f childhood and happiness, o f in n ocen ce, and love. I b en t over her shattered form, and spoke in w h ispers w hich her heart m igh t hear. I told h er o f repentance upon earth, yea , and o f hope beyond the earth.— YYith w ords o f en treaty and sooth in g sy m p a th y I gen tly led her Spirit into the path s o f duty , o f rec­titude and v irtu e, w h ere strength w ou ld be given her to live a repentant life. O, how she w ep t and w ish ed she m ight die w h ile the h ap p y dream last­ed. B ut sh e arose and w en t her w ay, resolv ing to profit b y the w arning w hich had been breathed to her Spirit. H er life now seem ed o f som e worth, and as I left her, “ friends” w h ose Spirits had long been unable to approach her, nestled close beside her. T he w ork o f healing had com m enced in her heart, and w ith the assistance o f Spirits, and of friends in the form w h o w ill receive her, sh e will y e t rise up purified and blessed, and enter upon her Spirit-life w ith a hoping, throbbing jo y , thanking God for H is m ercy, and m eeting face to face w ith those bright beings, w h ose d ew ey breath, w hose warm and striv ing hearts w ere exerted to raise her up.

A nd n ext, I v isited the poor orphan, cry ing for bread, sh ivering w ith cold, uncared for and suffer­ing. H ow cold and cheerless th e life before that orphan ! I looked, and near him w ere h is parents sad and un hap py, b ecau se o f the m isery o f their child. O, sad sig h t! there w ere none to give it bread, bu t the cold un w illing hand called charity, and on all sid es w ere snares and pitfalls, every th in g to m islead the little wanderer, and noth in g to cher­ish , to w arm the little h u n gry heart w ith the full­ness o f affection, and no arm to p rotect from sur­rounding dangers. W h en n ight had com e upon the earth, and n o covering or scarce a sh elter could bo fou n d b y the little w a if floating on its tem pest-

tost bosom , I drew near and blessed th e orphan ; I pressed him to m y heart, and prayed to m y Father in heaven to send angel-guides to w atch over the im m ortal germ , to influence som e benevolen t heart to cherish the little w itherin g flower, to g ive it som e bosom to w h ich its little heart m ight nestle in the spring-tim e o f its life and tw ine around here­after w ith love and affection. I w atched him w hile he slept in h is infantile innocence and desolation, and I sa id: “ I pray thee, 0 Father o f th e father­less, to cast a strong bu lw ark about th is innocent one, that he m ay live an upright and h o ly life, and learn to 'ca ll thee h is Father, and k n ow thee as su ch forever.” M any sym p athetic Spirit-friends w ere gathered round the lone child , and each one resolved to do a part to assist in leading that child aright, through life’s checkered path. H e w as con­ducted through the aid o f Spirits to a sym pathetic h e a r t; the neg lected one was cared fo r ; a k in dly hand w as stretched forth, and the little one’s head now slum bers beneath a friendly roof. Thou w ilt say, gentle teacher, that m y prayers w ere answ ered, un w orthy as I am. M any, m an y scen es o f suffer­ing and o f m isery, o f desolation, and d isappoint­m ent w ere w itnessed b y m e w hile m y earth-jour­n ey lasted, and m y Spirit shall w atch through their lives the good w ork w h ich w as g iven m e the pow er to begiD, and I w ill b less and m agnify the goodness o f m y F ather for H is unbounded m ercy to m e, and I shall stand read y to greet each one as th e y enter their Spirit-hom e, and tell them o f w hat m ercy and protecting care hath fo llow ed their l iv e s ; for th ey w ill y e t sh ine bright and glow ing w ith im m or­tal pu rity am ong those w h o have b een redeem ed from sin and suffering through the love o f the Father, and in the ligh t o f etern ity shall our Spirit see w hat the little seed hath grow n to, w h ich w as so sm all as to b e alm ost unseen ; its ra y s w ill b e­com e those o f refu lgent light and dazzling beauty , as tim e develops in its un ceasing progress the im ­mortal attributes w h ich belong to each unfold ing germ .

A n other sp eak s w ho h a s left earth. I cam e, said he, to report m y w ork as on ly begun . Lo, I have w andered up and dow n, and I ’ve penetrated into th e secret recesses o f m an’s m ost hidden m o­tives. I have stood in th e sacred p laces o f earth, w here m an does lip-hom age to h is Creator, and I ’ve w atched the w ord as it fell co ld ly and w ithout pow er upon th e hearts o f those w ho heard it, for verily , pom p and circum stances are b u t th e im pres­sions o f an hour, and th e sou nd o f m a n y w ords but created a confusion w here th e y w ere not u n ­derstood or r igh tly applied. I found no resting place for the sole o f m y foot in th e structures w h ich had b een erected b y the hand o f m an, as the altar w h en ce h is prayers should ascend to heaven as a sw eet in cen se before the throne of God. T he cold and h ea v y atm osphere oppressed and retarded m y ardor, and w ith difficu lty I p en e­trated the gross elem en t w h ich w as filled w ith so m any thoughts w h ose birth w a s o f earth. Sad and dispirited, I sou gh t a w illing ear som ew here else. I sou ght the hom e o f the low ly . I approached the couch o f th e suffering, and verily , th e y received m e, th ey repelled m e not, b u t w ith heartfelt tears th ey received th e com forting influence from m y Spirit to theirs, and w here th e hu m ble and upright man spoke forth th e thou ghts w h ich com e freigh t­ed w ith truth and everlasting ligh t o f heaven I stood b y , and breathed strength , and hope, and com fort to h is soul. For the sim ple and honest child o f N ature w as m ore receptive, m ore congenial to the influences o f indw elling ligh t than those whom form s, and cerem onies, and outw ard garbs o f p ie ty had surrounded b y their gross and heaven- d efy in g influence. W h ere m irth and revelry , the dance and song, w here w ine and all its ex c it in g in ­fluences held their sw ay, m y voice could not be heard, m y footsteps w ere turned aside. Sad and dispirited, I left the scene o f m irth and revelry . I sou ght the lo w ly cabin of the poor, th e oppressed child o f slavery , and as h e breathed h is sim ple prayer, a Spirit stood b y , and took it up and laid it before the Father’s throne as a sw eet sm elling in­cense o f gratitude. I said , “ p ra y on , hope on, poor s la v e ; th y bondage is o f earth, not o f h e a v e n ; th y poor bleeding heart w ill b e freer and brighter and far happier in th e Spirit-hom e than th e one w ho calls thee slave and lash es thee w ith m any stripes o f suffering. M y Sp irit g rew glad as I gaz­ed ; I g rew stronger to proceed on m y m ission of love. A n d then, I beheld another poor, ignorant, untaught child o f slavery, w h ose heart had never been tau gh t other than b itter and resentfu l feelings, the springs o f w h ose love had b een turned into stream s o f hate, because o f the oppression o f the task m aster, because o f th e chains w h ich cut the flesh and the bon ds w h ich held the sou l dow n on a level w ith the brute. O, sad and dreary p ic tu r e !I strove to breathe som e hope, som e com fort into the poor w ayw ard despond ing heart. I whispered, “ child o f toil and captiv ity , there is a brighter sun sh in ing for thee b eyon d th e starry h e a v en s; there are peacefu l hom es, placid and fair, w h ere thou shalt y e t rest th y w eary l im b s ; there are angel- friends w h om the fetters o f earth no longer bind, w aiting to w elcom e thee, and deck thee w ith flow ­ers to cheer up th y sad and despond ing S p ir it” A n d th ey also th ou gh t th ey had'a beautiful dream. A nd th ey w ondered in their darkness i f heaven was so beautifu l a p lace, and i f angels were so beau­tiful and b r ig h t O, th at low w hisper, th a t softly breathed prayer, left an im press beh in d w h ich no oppression can efface.

A n d I strove to approach those w hom th e y call their m asters. I strove, and w ould fain have m o v ­ed their hearts w ith p ity and charity. I w ould have b esou gh t th em not to im prison the immortal Spirit w h ich G od hath m ade free. - 1 appealed to their tenderness, and w ish ed to m ove their Spirits

to act in accordance w ith th e d ictates o f N atu re ; but the circum stances o f custom and o f la w had riveted its chains so firm ly about their hearts as to darken their better jud gm en t and render them d ea f to the appeals w h ich their ow n hearts often uncon­sc iou sly m ade to them . I b lessed th ose w h o w ere gentle and k ind to the flesh and blood w h ich their m oney had purchased, and I prayed to m y F ather to open their hearts to th e soft ton es o f H is lov in g m ercy, and m ake them th e instrum ents o f g iv in g life eternal to those w h o w ere their bondsm en, for I saw th a t it w a s th e sin o f custom m ore than o f necessity , and I said w ith in m y soul, w h en the heart hath b een opened b y the Spiritual unfold ing o f true ligh t and lov in g practical w orks, th e y w ill see their error and the gentle persuasion o f the still sm all voice from w ithin w ill guide them aright, and the oppressed shall b e cared for and lifted up, and their Spirits shall b e m ade as fair and a s pure, as trusting and lov in g in th e sim plicity o f their faith as those w h o have raised them . T erily , the ligh t o f each good deed b ecom es a star o f rejoic ing in th e hom e o f th e Spirit to greet it a t its en ­trance. Therefore, beloved teacher, I com e back from m y m ission hopiDg, for a pow er hath been breathed upon the people, a voice hath thrill­ed their hearts, a feelin g un know n and undefined b y m ortals is pervading, is expand ing the great beating, pu lsing heart o f hum anity. I t on ly sh ow s a ripple here and there, b u t th e ripples w ill grow into w aves, and the w inds w ill take up the story, and bear the glad tid ings over th e face o f the earth. A nd so I returned rejoicing w ith exceed ing great jo y , h ap py to return and w ork out m y part in the great struggle _ o f r igh t over all.

A n other now speaks. H er floating robes sparkle in the soft and m ellow ligh t even as gem s o f beauty and rare brilliancy. H er brow is bound w ith a chaplet o f lilies. H er voice is soft and m usical as the tones o f an selian h a r p ; its v ibrations thrill through ev ery listener as the touch o f a fine-toned instrum ent. Y ea, said she, I com e from earth glad and rejoicing, m y friends. T h ey w elcom ed m e w ith open hearts and outstretch ed .hand s ¡ th ey clasped m y Spirit-form to their hearts, for th ey k n ew m e, th ey rem em bered m y vo ice as in tim e of yore, and w h en I sp oke o f m y hom e b eyon d the blue firm am ent and th e tw ink lin g stars, w h en I told them o f the lov in g Father w h o perm itted us to return to cheer and to com fort, to love, to guide and direct, th ey hailed m y approach w ith jo y u n ­speakable ; their hearts becam e one great tem ple o f rejoicing in their n ew ly found life, for lo, th e y ex­cla im ed! H eaven hath com e to earth, and m ade earth seem bright and glad. I t is w ith in us, it is b eyon d us, it is all around us. A n d the m ourners w ere com forted, and the sick w ere healed , and the doubting, faltering ones w ere gen tly led a long b y a hand w h ich w as strong and able to guide. A nd the glad tid ings ran faster and sw ifte r ; it w as ta­ken up and con veyed from heart to heart, and all w ho responded to its call, w ere m ade partakers o f a liv ing jo y forever w ith in their reach. There are tw o great m ovem ents w h ich in alter­nate su ccession ru le and pervade all created N a ­ture, the systo lic and the diastolic. T he contrac­tion o f the liv ing heart, b y w h ich it forces outward th e vital current, and its su cceed in g expansion , b y w h ich it draw s backw ard w ith in itse lf th e return­in g stream s, is the correspondence in the hum an form o f th is universal law . D o not lose y o u r faith in hum an exce llen ce , b e­cause y o u r confidence has som etim es been betray­ed, nor believe th at friendship is on ly a delusion, and love a bright phantom w h ich g lides from you r grasp.

“ PROBATION.”When in the course of human events it shall

have come to pass that honesty and h u m ility will be characteristic of all reasoning and theorizing, and men become willing to follow truth, be it ever so much opposed to their previous habits, then and not till then, will consistency be something less rare, though always precious as “ j a c e t s We are re­minded of this truth by the constant recurrence of facts, which not only in Spirit, but in the most lite ra l manner do violence to everything like con­sistency, both in religion and philosophy. It is a generally acknowledged truth that the laws of Nations are predicated more or less on the domi­nant religion, and that the philosophy of that reli­gion gives coloring to the variations and shades of culture peculiar to the age. This is almost a tru­ism, so uniform is the history of the world in its illustration, but emphatically is it true of Christen­dom, be it Catholic or Protestant. Among the fun­damentals of all sects, so for as they pretend to have any system or philosophy to their theology, we know none more generally received than the doctrine of probation, which may be defined as that theory which makes man's existence on the earth a tr ia l, the efficacy and virtue of which fits him for the test of fellowship in the Spirit-world. Pendent to this theory is the doctrine of “ rewards and punishments,” the very mention of which re­minds us of the dark scenes in civil (?) and eccle­siastical history, in which “ the very air is heavy with the sighs of the martyred dead, the prisoned reformer, and the conscientious Christian.” Indeed, this doctrine of “ rewards and punishments,” Ins been the sine qua non of Protestantism, and has been so generally incorporated into the make-up of Christendom, that to this day it lives on the “ sta­tute book” as a qualification for the tru th and ve­ra c ity of all sworn witnesses in our courts of law. True, the application of the test is not now insisted on with the same positiveness it was only a few years ago, but it is no less a point of law, that all shall believe in “ future rewards and punishments.” We mention this fact not to discuss the doctrine of rewards and punishments, but to show the impor­tance of the dogma of liprobation" to the reader, for without rewards or punishments there could be no such thing as t r ia l in any sense we are now- accustomed to use the word. If, however, the law has become neglectful in not enforcing this point, the Church is still positive in vindicating the so­lemnities that gather round the responsibilities of life in sight of the fact that all probationers are ex­pected to make their “ calling and election sure,” since “ in the grave there ii no repentance," and “ after death no change.” Of the truth or folsity of this philosophy of Probation, we shall offer no remark at present, as we bring it into court only to have it bear witness against some of the issues made by an apostate ministry and a corrupt and irreligious press, who make use of eveiy means to ridicule and degrade Spiritualism. AA'ere it not for the historical fact that the dominant religious feel­ing gives color to the other departments of society, we would be at loss how to comprehend the issues which members of the press make upon Spiritual­ism, since the facts and premises of its philosophy are of a character that speak alike to the plainest gensc and the m o s t exalted mind. These facts, in­stead of ignoring the doctrine of probation, make it principle, for the revelations which the past five years have given, illustrative of Spirit-intercourse and its pluses, makes the declaration, of Christ (“ the kingdom of heaven is within you") not only authoritative, but final in Spiritual science, anu gives a dignity ami importance to Spiritual culture which the dogmatic theologian and bigot has foiled to effect.

And yet, in sight of the plainest induction from any of the fundamentals of Spiritual life, not a few of the editorial press are ever ready to select some phase of Spiritual intercourse, and set it forth in the most ridiculous manner, the better to bring the whole thing into contempt. The most painful part of the reflection is in the fact, that not a few of the m in is try join hands with these “ hirelings of the press,” and in their desire to do and say something that may be injurious to Spiritualism, forget that they arc sapping the foundations of their own creeds, and the order and virtue of society, so for as one or botli of these depend on religion for vita­lity and power.

The following will illustrate these remarks, for while it proves that the culture of this life goes with us to the Spirit-sphere, the Spirit of the ar­ticle and its general publication shows the intent of the writer and the obvious purpose of the editors. ,

A D e p a r t e d S p i r i t « e n d in g fo p . i i i s T e a - K e t t l e ._A skeptical investigator of Spiritualism gives tothe Boston Times the following chapter of his ex­perience at a Spiritual sitting In Pawtucket, R. I., a few days since.

The medium was Mr. II., who had been an auc­tioneer. A few moments previous an intemperate old man by the name of AY. had died. He had sold his effects, and himself bid off a copper tea-kettle for a few cents. And now on calling for the Spir­its to respond, the “ raps” came and spelled out the name of old Mr. AY.! He was asked “ if he wish­ed to make any communication,” and the answer was “ Yes.” So he proceeded and spelled out by the raps, “ I will take my tea-kettle !” The tea­kettle was then simmering on the cook-stove which stood in the room! and while the astonished “ me­dium” heard its humming “ response” and the message of old Mr. AY., he became horribly fright­ened, and it was a long while before he was content to sit down for the raps again. However, in the process of time this shock was partially forgotten, and Mr. II.’s wife persuaded him to sit again lor the “ sounds.” They had no sooner “ formed the cir­cle” than this same old Mr. AY. announced himself again, and rapped out by the alphabet, “ I w ill take m y tea-kettle." This was so perplexing to the medium that he refused to sit any more; and soon after the tea-kettle aforesaid was among the miss­ing, and I do not know that it has been heard to simmer since.

Now is it not a iittle singular, if there is no doubt of immortality, and no need of Spirit-mani­festation to awaken men to a more living and posi­tive sense of the necessity of preparing for another and a better world, that all such undeveloped phases of Spirit-intercourse arc selected for publi­cation and comment, while the celestial wisdom and angcl-eloqucnce of the most soul-searching power and beauty is passed by with indifference and neglect? AYc think it not only singular, but u n e x p la in a b le on any other supposition, than that of g e n e r a l skepticism in a future state of being; for if the culture of this life has anything to do in fitting the soul for the expansive harmonies of the Spirit-world, then all neglect must be punished or rewarded in kind, since it is true in philosophy, j as well as in the Gospel, that “ to him that hath', shall be given, and to him that hath not shall be­taken away even that which he hath, the plain sense of which is, that “ he th a t doeih wrong shall rtetiv* f o r the wrong tha t h i hath don* w ith o u t re-

sp ed o f person." AYo see no absurdity, therefore, in “ an intem perate o l d h a t ? ” asking the medium for his “ lea kettle," for it might have been the on ly point of union in their spheres. And if uni­formity of concession, and agreement of testimony can prove the doctrine of “probation ,” the revela­tions of Spirit-intercourse have made it a fixed fact in Spiritual science, for the evidence conclusively proves “ that as you sow, that shall you also reap.”

To illustrate this, let the following have its full significancy, as it comes from the one best qualified to judge—i. e. the sufferer.

Ca c t io n t o S u ic id e s .—AYe learn from a gentle­man who is intimate in Spiritual circles, that there has recently been a communication received from a late poet who committed suicide, who expresses great regret for his rash act, as he has not changed for the better, and does not find himself any better appreciated among the Spirits than he was here. He is still discourted, and yearnmg passionately for the unattainable, and is deprived -of the solacing thought that he can end all by the aid of a razor or prussic acid.—R . Y . S u n day Courier.

In sight of these facts it is a “ melancholy je s t ” for men to make light of the lessons of life, and ignore the teachings of the Spirits, since heaven or hell must ultimate from these earth relations. YYe do not hold to torments or punishments in the an­gular or agonizing sense of those words, but we do attach deep meaning to them, so much so as to consider it m ora l suicide for any soul to be for­getful of the claims of Spiritual culture and moral development.

C hristian ! be ye layman or minister, editor or mechanic, in the church or out of the synagogue, is it wise to ignore and make light of the testimony which this new unfolding of Spiritual life is giving to the age? Is it the part of the sage to neglect that, which in the most significant manner seeks to make the citizen civilized, the Saint Spiritualized, and the philosopher religious ? No! ! And yet Spiritualism does all this, for it shows the picture of life as i t is, not “ through a glass darkly” for it would have all men repent of error and wrong, and come into fellowship with God and his gov­ernment.

Reader, in a celestial and heavenly sense, as well as in a personal and selfish one, it is true, that “ he that is wise, is wise f o r him self." “ Judge thou."

PAPERS OLD AND NEW.AA'hatever may be the fate of many of the news­

papers now in existence, no one can doubt but as humanity unfolds, the culture and philosophy that come with its development will need proper or­gans for their dissemiatlon and popularization, so that new papers will be called into existence with the fresh developments and expanding phases of progress. Competition in the newspaper depart­ment, like competition in every other sphere of life, will work for good, since it will not only cheapen the general tariff cf prices, but be a stimulant to the Spiritual culture of those working in the edito­rial family. AYhen the monied reward fa ils , lore's labor commences, so that it will be true in the bat­tle of nc-wspapcrdom as in the battle of life, “ he that endureth to the o td , the same shall bo saved.”

In the meantime, we are pleased to see that the reformatory families are determined to multiply and sustain progressive organs, for the advocacy of their respective views. AA~c know what prurience would say about “ su sta in ing a f e w good organs,” Sec., but the unfolding of the mind needs new phases of culture, as the development of the body requires different sized garments.

AYhile, therefore, we feel the need of caution and prudence in a business sense, we also see the ne­cessity for multiplying the phases of culture, that all may he brought to a knowledge of the truth.— To the “ man of m oney," the multiplication of pa­pers may be more significant of speculation and dollar-and-cent enterprize, than reform and pro­gress, since there are times when cant is marketa­ble and reform fashionable; but if all such could ¡’or a moment remember that there is progress in ibis very “ make-believe philanthropby,” it would soften censure, since it has been well said, that “ that he who acst the hypocrite pays homage to t ir lu e .” '

To the really reformatory and honest, the Spiritual and progressed, who accept the mission of life with all “ its ups and downs, its alterations, its bran new plans and speculations,” as the unfolding of the divinity that shapes these seemingly inconsistent ends, nothing can be lost to hum an and S p ir it good, that is laid on the altar of humanity with clean hands and upright souls, be the organ of their pro­pagation permanent or transient.

Among the new candidates for patronage and usefulness, we have received No. 3 of a neat and handsomely printed paper, called “ T h e AYo h a n ’s A d v o c a t e .” It is about the size of our issue or a trifle larger, published weekly at Philadelphia, “ at two dollars p e r annum , s tr ic tly in adcance." If we understand the teachings of this number, it is to be a practical as well as a theoretical w o m a n s Ric n T S o r g a n , since the editing as well as the type setting, is to be done by women. AYhatever the “ t r a d e ” may say and do about this, wc cannot say, but it is plain that to “ this complexion must we come at last,” if the issue for woman’s rights and woman’s independence is to ultimate in any thing practical and useful. That great changes must come to the future of labor, must be self-evi­dent to every thinking mind at all acquainted with the improvements in machinery and the many branches of the mechanical arts, so that of neces­sity, the rules of trade will have to yield to the competition natural to progress and the pressure of the times. AYe hope, therefore, “ The AYoman’s Advocate ” will receive the fellowship and cooper­ative aid of the reformatory public, that the exper­iment may be fully tested, since there are many who doubt the practical ability of woman for any thing so hazardous and complicated as the “ make­up ” and publishing of p, paper.

“ The AA’oman’s Advocate” has a fine heading, illustrative of the yuvzeft'tti? of the paper ; and is in its “ make up,” judging from this number, a good family paper.

The Nett Era. This well-known sheet has been doing manly battle for progress and right so long that few words will be needed from us in calling attention to the fact that the th ird volume is in progress of development The paper has besn en­larged and generally improved in its “ make-up,” so that while the clear type and good paper please the eye, the matter and liberal Spirit of the argu­ment will be acceptable to the mind. It may be there are those who may not sympathize with many of these discussions, but reform must have the dress and external of the reformer, and he should be heard until it is plain to good sense that there is no virtue in him. Brother Hewitt is not of that class, for his mission, so for as we understand him, is and has been to unitize and harmonize the re­formatory and Spiritual elements, rather than to make issue with the f a i th of any.

The following from his prospectus will give all needful explanation to those who wish light.

S p i r i t u a l U n i v e r s e . This is a neat weekly is­sue, a little short of medium size, printed with good type on clear paper at one dollar per annum, mostly devoted to reform and Spiritualism. It has commenced its second volume, with every appear­ance of good health and long life. This paper dis­cusses nearly every phase of reform and progress, and may be too radical for some, but its columns are free for the pros and cons of the controversy, so that none need suffer from partialism or dogma­tism. The editor is liberal and tolerant, while doing ’duty for progress and reform. That reform means something with him, and is comprehensive of the general relations of life, will be evident from the following, which we find in the prospectus.

How far we may or mav not agree with the general method by which these new and old organs of re­form and progress do and shall elaborate the philo­sophy of the future, it were useless to say, since each must rise in its own order and glory, but so far as they make God the author and finisher of their faith, and work for the brotherhood of the race, wc wish them success and God-speed.

SPIRITUALISTS IN DANGER.It would seem from some accounts we have read

of the doings of Mayor AYood, that we are like to have some reforms in our city government effected, which have been crying “ trumpet tongued ” to heaven and earth for reformation, during many years past.

It is not, however, complimentary to the efficacy of t h u n e w s p a p e r press of I b i s c i t y , to c a l l to m i n d all that has been said in them on the need and ne­cessity of reform in the various departments of city polity, Tind knew how lit t le has been effected, judging from the following. Nor is it to he won­dered at, when we remember the lack of sense shown in the blind and indiscriminate manner of attack, which most of the editors, reporters and paragraph writers exhibit in their classifications of men and things. In f a c t , eo general, indiscrimin­ate and reckless has this style of writing become, that it is a question of serious moment with the thoughtful and religious mind, whether many of our newspaper issues do not more of evil thin of good in their mission.

AYe are happy in knowing Mayor AYood has al­ready stopped one f i l th y sheet, and we hope the rest will share a like fate; for the present violation of law and decency in most of these flash papers, is not only calculated to make the “ angels weep,” but tends in the most direct manner to corrupt the young and mislead the unsuspecting. AYe did not intend to write on the necessity of city reform, but to call the attention of the reader to the following extract from the daily Sun of this city, which was the subject of remark in the Conference of Janua­ry 2 G.

L e t u s have m esm erizers, c lairvoyants, ‘ S p ir­itu a l rappers,’ m ock auctioneers, lo ttery -po licy dealers, and s tock gam blers in "Wall s tree t, p u t th ro u g h a ‘ course of sp rou ts’ b y ou r energetic M ayor.”

The particular item in this extract, is the posi­tion assigned to the “ S p ir i tu a l rappers,” and the company in which they find themselves.

AYe should, however, have passed this by as con­temptible in tho extreme, were we permitted by good sense or religion to cherish contem pt for any of the family of man; but we wish to call the at­tention of the church member and those that so often find fault with the Spiritualists because they refer to the manner in which the popular religion­ist treats a class of phenomena that is as positive in its teachings, and as authoritative in its conclu­sions as any other class of facts in science. But what is most surprising and painful to good sense and common honesty is, that while they ignore the phenomena and its conclusions, they disgrace their own religion by approbating the filthy issues which a catch-penny press are ever wont to make on Spir­itualism, be the believers ever so exceptional for character, intelligence and social position.

So far as Mayor AYood may be instrumental in reforming the evils and errors of city life, we bid him God speed, and we hope the m ora l sense of so­ciety will sustain him in his efforts ; but when he attempts to make the law the agent by which to put down Spiritualism, we apprehend he will find it a very difficu lt th in g to accomplish. Good sense, however will suggest the propriety of attending to those positive violations of law, of which there are so many in the city, before he meddles with the “ Spiritual Rappers.” And that there are such, will probably be no news to the reader.

In order to report progress, however, we give the following from the N. Y. Herald of January 31.

Surely, amid such a state of things, the Spirit of man needs to have faith in good, and hope in its popularization, that ch a rity m a y suffer long an d be hired.

Nixon proposes to give the proceeds of his Saturday afternoon exhibition for the benefit of the above School. The exhibition consista of a “ Pictorial Tableaux of the Life of Christ,” with appropriate music by well known and “ eminent artists. Rev. U. WHOM SHALL WE BELIEVE ?Under the head of “ Spiritualism in California,”

we published in Nos. 28 and 30, two very extraor­dinary communications purporting to come from the Spirit of a Mr. Lane, which we copied from the P ioneer of San Francisco. At the time we made some comments on the character of the tes­timony if true, and its tendency if false, but con­cluding in the belief that it was true, since posi­tive testimony was given to that effect. Since then, not a few have asked about the re lia b ility of the communications, but f e w if any expressed positive doubt, until a San Francisco correspondent to tbe Daily Tribune of this city gave us to understand it was a “ joke." Since then, not a few have got to be “ marvellous wise,” and assure us they never believed the statement

Now, we do not wish to get a reputation for w is­dom at the expense of the good f a i th we delight to cherish for the moral integrity of our neighbors, and are therefore f r e t to say that we had the best presu m ptive evidence in the world for its truth, for aside of the positive testimony of the writer, we have the additional evidence of Mr. James A. Aus­tin, who made it a matter of personal examination.

As the case now stands, there is fa lsehood some­where, but we will need more testimony than the random say-so of an irresponsible correspondent to make us believe that man even in California, can be so depraved as to in ten tio n a lly do so much evil as must result from such irreligious falsification of the living and dead.

The reader wiil do well, therefore, after reading the following, to call to mind or refer to Mr. Aus­tin’s letter published in No. 2S of the Christian Spiritualist, as it is in nearly all particulars a con­tradiction to the statement of the Tribune’s corres­pondent

The reader will also remember this was written f o r the Tribune, where editors have not been either complimentary or decent in their reflections on Spi­ritualism and its phenomena.

BR. JONATHAN KOONS’ ROOMS.The reader will find on page fourth of this issue

an account of a visit made to the Spirit-Rooms of Jonathan KoonsbyBr. Haskell, Editor of the Spirit- Advocate, published in Rockford, III. As this is the th ird report that has been published in our co­lumns on the subject, it may seem there is nothing new in the testimony, but if it is read with the p ro p e r a t te n tio n a n d su b je c te d to a d isc rim in a tiv e reflection, it will give new and convincing proof of the r e a lity of Spirit-intercourse, for what possible motive can there be in so many persons giving a like testimony in favor of a falsity or an impossi­bility ?

AYe press this question home, and insist that our opponents give us an answer, for if it can be prov­ed that in this historic and measurably enlightened age men will club together for imposition and imposture, what is to save the world from universal skepticism? AYe did not write the above heading, however, for the purpose of philosophizing on tes­timony, but to call the attention of the reader to the letters of Br. Koons and his friends, which give a detail of his past losses, sufferings and present wants. Not long since, we called attention to this subject, and we are happy in being able to report progress, so for as to say some m oney has been re­ceived, and we have the names of friends good for five dollars each. Spiritualists, will you make this a practical question by giving it a little attention ?

E d i t o r : One of those wonderful circum­stances that seems so inexplicable to the masses, but which a few of us in this place, in spite of the frowns of orthodoxy, have dared to believe pro­ceeds from the manifestations of Spirits, occurred in this city an evening or two since. A few gentle­men had formed a circle for the purpose of testing the truth or falsity of the doctrine of Spiritualism. They were actuated by a thirst for knowledge and truth, and nothing more, and were perfectly sincere in their object. They met at the house of Doctor Mash, who has for some time been impressed with a full conviction of the divine mission of this much- abused, yet ancient mode of intercourse between the departed and their friends in the earth-sphere. There were present, Dr. Mash, Biggus AYoodhard, H. Newcome, D. AA'. AYest, James Green and Rich­ard Love. After the circle was formed, the mani­festations soon began, Mr. Biggus AYoodhard acting as medium on the occasion. Mr. James Green in­quired if there were any Spirits present who were acquainted with him in the earth-sphere. A rap in the affirmative was quickly returned.

Green had an uncle by that name; in fact he him- j self had nearly forgotten it, as his uncle Thomas j died when he was a child not six years old, and he is now a man of fifty years and upwards.

M r. G .—TYhat has my uncle Thomas to say to me ?

“ Place not thy heart on the riches and treasures of mundane life; they are perishing, and take wings unto themselves and fly away; rather set your thoughts on the imperishable riches of that eternal sphere which is to last and endure forever. Be charitable to your indigent neighbor, help the dis­tressed, relieve the needy, encourage the faint­hearted, and assuage the woes of the down-trodden and sorrow-stricken. Do this, and you will have fulfilled the whole duty and destiny of man, and will serve and please your Creator infinitely better than if you knelt on soft cushions and lisped in hare responses the whole litany of the Church, as as it is now established on earth. You have much to amend in your life ; heed my words, be warned and be faithful to the end. T h o m a s . G r e e n . ”

This exhortation struck all present as particular­ly appropriate to Mr. Green ; for being wealthy, amassing a fortune by the closest economy, it was well known that he neglected (this he himself con­fessed) many opportunities of doing good to his fellow-man by charitable deeds. Mr. Green was greatly struck by its appropriateness to his case, and has resolved, as he informed the circle, to fol­low tho Spirit’s monition in future.

It may be well to state that Mr. AYest in compa­ny with Dr. Mash called at the Post-Office next morning, and a letter was, sure enough, there for him, from AY. G. S. & Co., AYasbington city, offer­ing to purchase his claim, just as the Spirit had mentioned. AYe ask where could have been the psychology in this ? It was certainly a supernatu­ral manifestation, if there ever was one.

Very shortly a great rapping was heard under

ever opportunity offers, but remember his induo- tion “ worship not man."

But tbe principles of truths, for this is the shieldof his indwelling worship. God is truth. It is bT wielding this that he conquers mighty foes; then look not for a substratum within the precincts of a Davis, Edmonds, Partridge, Brittan, or any other; but through the lineage of such mediumship to tho great millenium of truth, for if the vilest of the vile are but mediums filling tho capacity of their being, may not the virtue of the virtuous fill theirs t

The lectures are now closed; Mr. Davis has de­livered his courso with a depth of pathos and argu­ment that knows no abatement, short of eradicat­ing some of the errors common to man.

That splendid palace, erected by the noble Stand­ford, who has given birth to the giant hall cf thiscity, is now being cleaned for another reception._The gentlemanly and courteous liberality of a Greenfield, who is the proprietor of this noble es­tablishment, and who has so decorously waitedupon his audience, is entitled to many thanks._The Gas Company who light the Hall, paid their respects by its illumination in a most brilliant man­ner.

But what shall we say of Mr. Davis? His words are, “ worship not the man.” Retiring and modest in all his deportment, he explores his subjects only as wisdom can explore them. He is the rich boon of the philosopher, the consoler of the widow and the solace of the orphan. His words burn like fire upon the altars of the hearts of hungry starv­ing souls. And hundreds witnessed this happy re­ception by crowding to the Hall long before it was opened. Mr. Davis is a gentleman, a scholar, and a Christian ; as such we recommend him to nlL

to say a word in relation to the proposition which appeared in the 35th No. of your edition in our be­half, in consideration of our loss of property by fire. This, truly, was a serious loss to us, as far as temporal comforts are concerned; hut thank hea­ven, its conflagration revealed to us a rich treasure of knowledge, pertaining to modern sectarianism,“ love those who love us and hate those who hate us,” which we considered an ample remuneration for the loss sustained. Consequently, we were con­tent with our eicliange, under a hope and expecta­tion that sooner or later we would he left unmo­lested and undisturbed in our heavenly and in­structive communion with Spirits, and thus, in the end, enabled to rebuild and replenish quietly our loss with our own labor and industry. Three years this coming April, the phenomena first made itself known to us in its singular but peculiar and wonderful manner. Since then, our doors have been opened, and all wishing not to build on a “ blind laith,” but to investigate the truthfulness of the phenomena, have been free to do so “ without money and without price,” no charge being made for our time and services in sitting for the manifes­tations of Spirits for the gratification of others.— Our reward in the community has been persecuton, slander, ridicule, and fire, in the conflagration of our barn, stored with the fruits of our labor and economy. This loss to us was incalculable ; a large family of helpless children depending on our year’s crop, were left without bread, the necessary com­forts of life. The loss of which, attributing the cause to the unchristian cries of “ D e v i l , H u m b u g ,

D e l u s io n , F r a u d , down w ith i t , c rucify h im , &c.," which may be heard, Sunday after Sunday, from the sectarian pulpits in the surrounding vicinity, stirring up the people to hate and wrong doing, has been our gain. The cause of evil should be placed where it belongs. Knaves plan, and fools, dupes, execute. The destruction, however, was not so complete as the confessing-yood would have wished. To think of men professing to be the children of Christ, on the ensuing day after the conflagration, saying, that their rejoicing could only be increased could they add that “ Koons and his family had perished in the flames.” My Spirit guides teach me the great law of love—good for evil, love for hate, kindness for revenge. There is no better, nobler, or wiser plan of dealing with the wrong* we meet with. To have unfortunate victims ar­raigned for wrong doings may satisfy the LAAY and gratify the selfish man ; hut to foi give our en­emies, and by a consistent course teach them love and good for hate and evil, satisfies the soul and

Davis has delivered four lectures at Auburn, to an audience filling one of the most splendid Halls in the United States, with a thrilling interest of no ordinary capacity. The series are to be completed this, Friday evening, and as his vessel is like the widow's cruise of oil, we expect a crowded house, with the best of the wine at the last of the feast. His mind is truly the adorning of America, versed as he is in the scien­ces, and arts and civilization. He reaches out with a force and influence of electrical fire; he pierces the breast with a glittering sword of love, and moves as on the wings of complacency, out-dis­tancing the stars of sarcasm and reproach. His strong adherence to that Bible truth is, “ Speak evil of no man.” He is the man that chases a thousand and puts tens of thousands to flight. His indomitable courage and great forethought entitle him to a rank in all society. Like the humble M asarm e, he is the congenial Spirit from the high­est to the lowest of God’s heritage.

In spite of the efforts to check our correspon­dence with Spirits, yet has our desire increased, and not a thought arises to desist, to deprive our­selves of the glorious treasures, intellectual and Spiritual, of the heavenly spheres. Nay, we had rather spend an obscure life under some lonely cleft of rocks, than to lose these rich treasures, feeding

| on homely fore and having coarser raiment.I need not tell you my astonishment, mingled

with the gratitude I felt as I read the communica­tion of A n In q u irer, in relation to myself and situa­tion. It Is impossible to put my feelings upon this subject on paper. I put myself in the hands of others. Silence often speaketh more than words. I leave it with you and the friends of progress.

In conclusion, I would aud that it never was our desire nor object to become notorious. But if it is the wish of Spirits and man that wc should be pro­moted to the unenviable position of becoming ob­jects of persecution for the promulgation of light and knowledge, we can only exclaim as did a good one of old, not our wills, “ but thine,” oh Spirits and moral reformers “ be done,” and we will resign our­selves to our position, submit to our lot, in behalf of light, truth, Spiritual freedom, universal liberty and love. Upon this subject I am done. The barn was burned, our entire crop of wheat, oats, three- fourth of our hay of this year, a new wagon, plows and other farming utensils. All this is true. It is equally certain that it was set on fire for the purpose, avowed, of destroying our means to re­ceive and accommodate visitors who were daily coming to investigate the phenomena. Bad desires are often counteracted ; so in this case. Our visitors increased ten per cent, both in number and supe­riority of minds. Here I desist, you have the facts. The matter is with j'ou and the friends of truth. I assume no responsibility. AYhile my health, means, and mediums at command, and Spirits wish to use me, I am ready, willing and anxious to serve my fellow men and aid in promoting the cause of reform. Yours for progression,

This God is a kind and compassionate father al­so, and loves all who fear him and obey him, yet he keeps them in ignorance of many things relative to himself, lest a knowledge of himself should make them vainglorious over liirn ; and in blindness he chastises them for tha t they know not, but to make them love him the more, through fear of disobey­ing him, when his requirements arc many of them of so doubtful an origin and meaning, as to have puzzled the heads of the wisest of his lawyers, rom time immemorial.

I was informed that the Doctor had given him up as hopeless on the Friday previous, and that they had kept life in him until that time by rubbing, but rubbing only relieved him for the time. His spasms were of the most violent and acute nature, and would last from one to two hours, with about an hour’s intermission. He was partly through one of those spasms when I arrived, yet but little hopes of his getting through it at all. He revived for a time, and soon went into another more vio­lent than any former one. The alarm was given that he was dying, that his eyes were glassy, face and limbs cold. At this point, his sister became in­fluenced by a Spirit purporting to be my Spiritual director. I was directed to go into the room. I did so, and followed the directions given through her, and in half an hour he arose from his bed and said that he was well and free from pain. In a short time supper was ready, and he sat at th# table and

reason that their father and mother disobeyed him, and because they would not or could not believe that he in the shape of his son, who was a man, died for them. But his especial people, those whom he chooses from the foundation of the world as his favorites, though they do disobey, if they will only believe that they were wicked enough to kill their God, them ho will pardon and receive in­to his everlasting favor. It makes no difference how much these wicked ones may love one anoth-

! er, unless they will believe in this atonement through' , the Son, and believe that his blood which he chose | to spill in obedience to the dictates of the Father,| has been applied to their souls as a cleansing eradi- ' cator, it is all of no use, whether they are elected or not, though it is said they cannot be, unless they are finally saved.

| This God is Allwise, and yet so ignorant that he I knew not what to do with his children when he ' found that they had become wicked, and by va­l rious projects at different times destroyed them, in j hopes that they would become better ; but being > constantly disappointed finally gave up the attempt,: and left one chosen race and took another, that he j might fulfil his wise purposes to redeem sinful man. j Those upon the earth at this time, he is endeavor­; ing to make his instruments of salvation in enlight- j ening others, through this revelation, as it is called.| of his will. He intends thus, it is said, to convert I the whole world into tlie knowledga of himself,; and at least to save all who are thus converted into 1 one great grand jubilate of resurrectionized souls, to live with him in heaven in happiness forever; while those not converted are to go to hell, and to howl in despair because they are cast off. Now

, this living God not only takes delight in the fore­; ordained children’s misery, but calls upon those : whom he has saved by his partial decrees, to re­' joico with him, that he has put them into such tor­; ments, saying that they themselves are alone to blame, and they shout and praise the just God who has redeemed them, and damned their brothers

i and sisters. This knowledge increases their joy,| and the wails of the despairing wretches, burning I and broiling on the red hot coals of God's righteous i anger, adds fuel to their fires of love, and a new ! song arises, of glory to God for his justice in sav­ing them through grace and mercy, in preference to those who are condemned. For they are loud

: in their praise, that it is not any good thing in ! them that they are thus saved, but through the ■ goodness and mercy of God, who might as justly j have condemned them to everlasting flames if he j had chosen, as those whose cries reach their ears,| imploring pardon for their sins and prayers for ! their release.

that others had practiced it to some small extent, bat what has been the result ? For myself, I have been thronged with persons requiring Spiritual aid through me as a healing medium ever since, and the results are truly wonderful. Numerous are the cases pronounced by physicians as incurable, now enjoying either sound, good or much improved health; but the matter did not rest here, for from that extraordinary experiment, numerous persons in this place have been induced to be developed as healing mediums, and their practice is very exten­sive, and much joy, and many interesting incidents accompany many of the curses performed by these mediums. It is very common for the old school physicians to say to the friends of a patient, “there is little or no hope of a recovery, £c.,” when some friend of the patient would relato the wonderful cures of a healing medium. The medium is sent for; injunctions of secrcsyare laid down; the me­dium influences the patient; the doctor visits the patient the next day; sees a great change for the better; leaves more medicine; medium takes care of it; influences the patient; the next day the doc­tor says, I hit the nail that time, and says tho change is so great that a recovery is favorable; and so goes the matter for from two to six days; doctor smells something mysterious in the matter ; makes strict inquiries; finds nothing satisfactory; but sees none of those symptoms peculiar to the effects produced by his poisons; leaves the patient, curs­ing the common humbugs of the day; sometimes the physician says the patient cannot live, and one visit oi the medium is sufficient. The doctor is no­tified that the patient has been visited by a medium and is well; the doctor is raving, abuses the par­ties, says the patient is only magnetized, is urged to call, does so, sees the patient free from disease ; leaves crest-fallen, muttering to himself the male­dictions and denunciations he will heap on the me­dium when he sees him. Now, this is not the case with all physicians here, for several have told their patients honestly, there was no help for them in their practice, and have brought or sent their pa­tients to me. I have treated three old experienced physicians for diseases they said could not be cured by their methods, also treated cases in the families of two other physicians, and in all these cases, they are honest enough to own their experience in the most satisfactory manner. A constant practice for nearly a year, with an extensive observation, has brought before me much that is beautiful. The Spirits who guide in this matter were of the high­est order of talent while on earth, and their expe­rience in the Spirit-world has added much to their stora of knowledge. Some of the directors are an­cient Greek philosophers, while others are of but few years’ experience in the Spirit-world. Their anxiety to bring the healing art as a science before the world is great. For the benefit of the world, they are explaining the causes of all diseases and the manner they are developed. As yet, the sci­entific world, as far as my observation has ex­tended, has never been able to account for or tell what causes ulcers, tumors, scrofula, white swell­ings, and in short, all kinds of cutaneous diseases, Ac., or how they are formed, or where they ori­ginate. Sometimes they speculate upon some ima­ginary causes, but it satisfies only the speculator or perions susceptible to his influence, but the law that causes all diseases is so clear by Spirit-expla­nation, that it carries conviction and proof to all who investigate it. I have conversed with many intelligent physicians, and they are all interested with the philosophy of diseases as given by these Spirits, although many do not believe in Spiritual­ism, but believe the instructions received as merely a knowledge of the matter obtained by myself through a clairvoyance, without explaining what clairvoyance is. But they say, it matters not, only if it prove to be a3 true as the teachings indicate.

I hope that if the healing art has as great a claim as it appears to have, that more attention will be paid to it. Friends will excuse me if my style of writing is bad or ideas not clear, as my language is very poor, and as a writer have but little or no ex­perience. My mediumship has not been limited to j the healing art, but has expanded into various, branches of the natural sciences. |

REFORM.I t is w ith no little pride that our Ju d ge and our

people should recur to th e fact that, at th e late se s ­sion o f the d istr ict court in th is and our sister P arish , there w as not a single charge for the grand ju r y to investigate. P erhaps th is thing has never before occurred. D oes th is not argue an im prove­m ent in public m orals and a disposition to observe the law ? and y e t to assign an y particu lar cause w ould be ou t o f the question . B u t th a t there is a m igh ty revolution going on in our country, m ore pow erful than w ar a id bloodshed could m ake it, is v e r y evident. E v ery th ing social, m oral and po­litical is stam ped w ith the im press o f reform. W e do not a ltogeth er agree w ith those w h o w ith “ fore- eodings dire ” pred ict a great civil war. T he tim e has now arrived in the h istory o f our country , w h en m ind in its m ost pow erful and peacefu l w ork­in gs m ust carry on ail great sch em es w ithou t the aid o f p h ysica l force. T hough hum an nature in the abstract is ju s t w hat it h as a lw ays been, it is operated upon b y different influences, its desires are m ore elevated , its passion s m ore su bd ued and its w ork ings m ore Deaceablc. The wife was amazed at what she beheld. She could now no longer doubt the perfect sanity of her husband, while her unbelief in omens or super­natural agencies, of whatever kind, was complete­ly shaken—nay, entirely removed. She could not question the palpable evidences of her unclouded senses. Everything that her husband had describ­ed as the teachings of his trance or vision, was presented in tangible reality to her perceptions.— She had, however, little time for reflection upon their mysterious, solemn and portentous import­ance, before her her hushand again addressed her:

“ This, Lizzy, is the monument I beheld in my death-dream. Promise me that you will cause one to be procured as nearly alike to it as may be, and erect it at the head of my grave, with only such inscription engraved thereon as may tell the sim­ple story of my birth and death. One thing more I have yet to ask of you, my dear and loving wife. It is this: Let there be no unnecessary parade or ceremony at my funeral; let my grave habiliments, instead of the usual shroud or winding-sheet, be the clothing of my ordinary wear, and have me placed in tho grave with my head toward the set­ting, and my feet to the rising sun. Promise me this, sweet sharer of my sorrows and joys hereto­fore, and all ray thoughts and wishes will bo ful­filled in this life.”

“ Certainly, my dear husband, your every desire shall be faithfully 4 performed,” was all that the grief-stricken wife could utter, as she threw her­self about his neck, and yielded to his last linger­ing fervent kiss, and a prolonged embrace of thrill­ing warmth and tenderness. There was no eye to witness that holy interchange of bliss and fidelity between husband and wife, save the “ All-seeing­one ” of the great God of love and Nature.

They returned to their homes with the same si­lence that had been observed between them on the going forth therefrom to the habitations of the dead. Tha husband soon after retired to a small room, and occupied himself during the rest of the day in drawing up a copy of his will, and other in­cidental legal papers, while his wife resumed her usual domestic avocations, with more than her usual cheerfulness and assiduity of purpose.

The day following was the anniversary of the death of their second child, the little “ Willy,” whose soul’s departure to the world of Spirits had wrought the mental aberration of the father, and brought such deep grief, and comparative desola­tion in the late small but blissful family circle.

The father rose at an early hour, in the seeming enjoyment of his original health and spirits, and set about some ordinary duties that had been neg­lected by him entirely, for many months, with that thoughtful care and consideration for the wants of his family, as had been his wont in the first years of his married life. He was gay and conversable to a degree that augured a hope in the bosom of his fond wife, that the strange hallucination that had for the entire year past fettered his being, was al leDgth about to be dispelled—that he would be “ clothed again in his right mind,” and speedily re­sume his whilom habits and pursuits of life. His wife did not forget that that day was the anniversary of the death of their lost and only child ; nor had the startling revelations of the previous day passed from her mind as mere chimeras of an excited brain. Her husband made not the slightest allu­sion to any of the various mysterious matters that had so long absorbed and shut out bis soul from all sense of worldly things ; and she so guarded her own expressions and conduct to present no cause for the return or the aggravation of the mental malady from which he was now apparently so hopefully recovering.

After the morning meal was over, he casually remarked to his wife, that from his long negligence of his business pursuits, his affairs had fallen into some confusion, and that, by consequence, it would be ncessary for him to have some consultation with his attorney, with a view to their proper

I adjustment or regulation. His wife noddiDgly ac­quiesced in the necessity of his plans, and saw him depart from his home on such an errand, with a degree of joy she had not experienced for many months, for she ardently longed for the dreaded “ anniversary ” to pass over without a realization of the events foreboded in his vision, though some vague and indefinable fears possessed her breast as to the sequences of all that was yet in store, of of their wedded union. If her husbahd should only survive through the few short hours of that single day, the ‘‘spell” upon his destiny would be banished, and joy and happiness would once more

| be their portion, undisturbed by terrible apprehen- | sions of calamity, or unquieted by su perstitious fears | and forebodings. Oh, how fervently she prayed : that the “ bitter cup ” might be removed—that i her husband might not die, at least on tha t dread

d a y o f p re d ic tio n ! She, however, soon brought herself to say—“ God’s will be done,” when she set about the usual cares and duties of her house­hold, which now consisted of herself and husband, an aged mother and a young sister.

How her heart bounded within her bosom for joy, when she saw her husband return to their habitation at the dinner hour, in the full glow of health and spirits, accompanied by his friend, the attorney, whom he had invited home -with him to dine. The day was now rapidly drawing to its close, and there was nothing that indicated imme­diate danger or death in the circle of their home. Yes, she now felt the “ anniversary” would pass

j without the dread approach of the angel—he would j live 1 and all again would be peace and joy.I At the dinner table her husband conversed with ; his guest with his accustomed freedom and intelli- 1 gence upon the ordinary topics of the times, and i seemed to have forgotten entirely the circumstances i of his vision, and its fearful foreboding in connec- \ tion with that very dajq which he had so strenu- | ously insisted theretofore, would be his last in life : on earth. His wife had entertained some fears up i to this very hour, tiiat it was the intention of her■ husband to take his own life in some secret and i suicidal manner, on the return of the anniversary ; of the death of his so fondly beloved child—but | now his assiduous attention to the wants of hisguest at dinner, his animated deportment and ra­

i tional and cheerful conversation, left no room in■ her breast for any such apprehensions or suspicions j in regard to his exit from the scenes and trials of a j terrestrial existence.i But the fatal hour approached—it came! The j various courses of the table had been duly served i and removed, and the wine and walnuts only I remained to be discussed, as a portion of the social family feast. He pushed the decanter toward his legal friend, and gaily invited him to fill his glass, remarking jocularly that he hoped his guest would excuse any breach of politeness or etiquette on his part, by his declining wine, and drinking his Health

S h e desired that a sp ee d y consu lta­tion o f p h ysic ian s sh ou ld b e held , w ith a v iew to a p o st m ortem exam ination o f th e dead b o d y o f her hu sb and , to ascertain i f h is death h ad b een the re­su lt o f poison, or o f som e lurking d isease, unknow n to her, incid en t to h is organization. T h e inquest and m edical investigation took place— b u t nothing w as d iscovered ind icatin g po ison or d ecayin g m en tal and p h ysica l pow ers. H e had died in the full flu sh and vigor o f h is m anhood— w ith ou t d isease apparently o f a n y k in d w h atever. T he usual ver­d ict in su ch cases, “ D ied b y th e v isita tion o f God, accord ingly w a s d u ly rendered. T h e b o d y w as buried in th e sec lu d ed grave, b y th e brook and the w illow s, w h ere th e w ild ro ses b loom ed and the m elod y o f b irds resound ed in th e depth o f the forest sh ru b b ery and trees, w h ile th e w h ite m arble m em orial w a s not om itted from the requirem ents the departed had enjoined in fu lfilm ent o f the sev ­eral sp ecia lities o f h is m y sterio u s vision. T he y o u n g w id o w realized that her hu sb an d had liter­a lly “ se t h is h ou se in order,” p rev iou s to h is d e­m ise. She at len gth becam e p ossessed w ith the strange desire to h ave th e Spirit o f h er h u sb an d m anifest itse lf to her in som e sp ecia l m ann er or other, and often tim es so u g h t th e solitude and darkn ess o f a rem ote cham ber, w ith th e h op e o f see in g th e ghost o f th e loved departed one. Sh e even ventured alone to the “ G arden o f th e G raves,” a t th e w itch ­in g “ hou r o f n ig h t w h en apparitions are w on t toa p p e a r ,” b u t th e r e cam o n o sh a p e ly fo rm in g ra v e habilim ents to gratify her gaze ; and there w as no token or m anifestations b y w h ich sh e could be in ­form ed o f th e b liss or g loom o f the sou l o f her hu sb and in th e w orld o f Spirits.

A t len gth , how ever, abou t s ix m on th s after the death o f her hu sb and , th e w id o w retired to rest at night, and fa lling into a slum b er, dreamed th at her husband stood b y h er side, a s h e had u su a lly ap­peared w h en in th e h e y d a y o f h is h ea lth and hap­p in ess. H e addressed h er in som e endearin g term s, and sh e p u t forth her arm s to receive h is caresses, w h en sh e awoke an d realized th a t sh e h ad only dreamed! To m ake “ assurance d ou b ly su re ,” she arose from the b ed and lit a lam p, as i f sh e w ould in th is w a y convince h e r se lf o f h is tangible p res­ence or o therw ise, a lthough su ch procedure w as b u t an act o f supererogation , sin ce a full bright m oon beam ed into th e cham ber, and revealed every object w ith the d istin ctn ess o f the ligh t o f day.— She threw up th e casem ent, and a llow in g the cool­ing zep h y rs o f the even in g to fan her brow , return­ed to her couch , and again dream ed o f see in g her husband. She saw h im as he la y a corpse in h is coffin, and ben d in g dow n sh e im printed a k iss u p ­on h is pallid brow , and breathed a b r ie f p rayer for the repose and h ap p iness o f h is souL A s sh e did so, the dead form in stan tly changed into a canary bird, w h ich opened its m outh and d istin ctly utter­e d :— “ I am h ap p y in heaven , E lizabeth, w here y o u w ill m eet m e on the second anniversary o f our W illy ’s departure.” T he bird b e n t h is tin y neck caressin g ly to h er lips, opened its b ill and pu t out h er r u b y little tongue, a s i f read y to receive a crum b o f food from the parent canary. T hen, as sh e w as about to utter an expression o f fondness, the little creature flew dow n her throat and choked her sp eech , w h en sh e awoke, and found th at w hat sh e had seen and heard w ere o n ly th e vagaries o f the sleep in g hour. Sh e had “ dream t a dream w h ich w a s not all a d r e a m !” A t lea st sh e fancied that th e poor little bird rem ained lodged in her throat for severa l d a y s afterw ards, w h en it w as su d d en ly and m ysteriou sly released from its sin gu ­lar prison. T here w a s certain ly no “ delusion ” in regard to a certain protuberance in her neck , a s i f sh e had sw allow ed th e core of an apple, w h ose presence w as co in cident w ith h er dream and the three d a y s su b seq u en t thereto. Indeed , su ch w as the chokiDg sensation sh e exp erien ced during the tim e o f the c logm en t o f the oesophagus, that sh e a c ­tu a lly concluded to call in a surgeon to m ake an in ­cision for its d isp lacem ent, w h en it w as su dd en ly rem oved b y som e agen cy b eyon d her com preh en­sion altogether.

From th e n igh t o f th a t double dream the w ailing w idow no longer m ourned as one w h o w ou ld not be com forted. A calm seren ity o f m ind w as hers — nay, a degree o f hap p iness and contentm ent w hich w ere characteristic o f her gen tle and b u o y ­ant nature. Sh e had w itn essed th e entire fulfil­m ent o f th e presentim ent or v ision vouchsafed to her husband, and now fu lly believed the vo ice o f the canary o f h er dream , w h ich declared th at she sh ou ld m eet her husband in heaven on the ensu ing ann iversary o f h is d em ise, and th a t o f their child, “ W illy .”

In sooth , th e “ beautifu l d estroyer ” already la y in the w id ow ’s heart, now p alin g ch eek s like the early lily , and again scatter ing over them the rose and th e rainbow . Consumption had m arked his prey. A n on th e angel hurled the fatal shaft, and “ life’s fitful dream w a s o’er.” It w as the “ ann i­versary d a y .” Sh e sa t in a room w ith h er m other and sister, engaged in ten tly w ith her n eed le upon a cam bric collaret, in tended for th e latter, and fin­

ishing th e sam e, sh e rem arked— “ There, mother, my work is done / ” S h e stretch ed forth h er hand to p resen t th e article t o h er little sister— sh e sm iled through a tear w h ich g listen ed in her ey e— her b reath in g seem ed oppressed , and the rose w hich a m om en t before b loom ed on her countenance van ­ished in fitfu l streaks, lik e the m idn igh t dances o f the northern ligh ts, and her sou l had gone to m eet its Spirit-mate in h eaven 1 T he canary bird, too, strange as it seem ed , again w as p resent at the fligh t o f th e sou l to its h om e in th e phantom w orld. I t cam e and w en t a s su d d en ly and m y ster io u sly as the sam e bird, or its affiliated predecessors, had done on form er occasions o f sorrow and death.

T he sw a llow s ch ased each other in sport, tw itter ing as th e y flew over th e clear w aters and lak es o f th e cem etery . E v ery bu sh , every tree, y e a every branch, sen t forth th e m u sic o f the singing birds. T he v e ry air seem ed redolent w ith m elod y , from th e bold so n g o f the th r u s t , to the pleasant chirrup o f th a t k in g m usician , th e grass­hopper. T h e fields and th e leaves w ere in the lovelin ess and fresh n ess o f yo u th , lu xu riatin g in the sunbeam s, in th e depth s o f their su m m er green. T he y e llo w bu tterfly sported th e liv e lo n g day along th e flow ery b an k s o f th e stream , a ligh tin g occasion ally to lave its fa iry w in g s in th e cooling elem ent, w h ile th e bee h u m m ed in m erry m ood as i t pu rsued its h on ied errand from flow er to flower. On a d a y lik e th is sh e d ie d ; and on a day o f equal jo y am ong all th in g s o f N atu re, the last relic o f the la te h a p p y fam ily w a s buried at the side o f her husband, b y th e sin g in g brook and th e w eep in g w illow s, in th a t lo v e ly “ G arden o f the D ead .”

A VISIT TO J. KOONS’ SPIRIT-ROOM.D ecember 13, 1851.

For the benefit o f th ose w h o m a y w ish to visit the Spirit-room o f J . K o o n s , at A th en s C ounty, Ohio, I w ou ld rem ark th at th e m ost d irect w a y to th is p lace, from C incinnati and th e W est, a t th is season o f the year, is b y the Railroad from C incin­n ati to L ancaster, and from L an caster to C hancey, (40 m iles,) b y s ta g e ; from K ootz’s H otel, in C han­c ey , to K oon s’s, is ab ou t tw o m iles, over a h illy r o a d ; and for those w h o are able to w alk, it affords good exercise to clim b th e hills. W h e n th e Ohio river is navigab le, visitors m a y com e b y boat to P om eroy , and th en b y stage to A th en s, and thence to C hancey.

I arrived h ere D ec. 10, 1854, and found Mr. K oon s and fam ily occu p yin g a “ double log-house," in a v e r y rom antic sp ot am ong the hills, surround­ed w ith a good sto ck o f apple and p each trees, w h ich g ive so m eth in g o f th e appearance o f com fort to the surroun ding scenery .

T he “ Spirit-room ” is abou t 12 b y 16 feet, one story, and m ade o f logs. In th e room is a table, or platform , about 2 b y 6 feet, on w h ich is placed a fram e-w ork, su pp orting a b a ss and tenor drum , w ith up righ t p lates o f z in c an d copper, connected b y w ires, and sm all b e lls h u n g along th e w ires. T here are sh e lv e s on one sid e o f the room , b a ck o f the tab le above m entioned , on w h ich are various articles. In addition to the drum s, are tw o violins, guitar, banjo, tam bourine, accordeon, harm onicon, a tin trum pet, ab su t tw o fe e t long, v e r y sm a ll at the sm all end, and abou t an in ch in diam eter at the large end— T h at part o f the room occu p ied b y th e “ Circle" and spectators, is about equal to ten feet sq u a r e : in th a t is a sm all stove, table, and seats. There are tw o w in d ow s in the room , closed b y shutters, and w h en the door is closed , all are sn u g ly secured .

On th e even in g o f the 11th th e circle m et in the Spirit-room ,— I w a s th e on ly stranger p r e se n t A f­ter all w a s arranged, and the circle seated , th e ligh t w a s ex tin gu ish ed , and v ery soon a h e a v y blow on th e table, b y the “ large stick ” o f th e bass drum , ann oun ced th a t th e Sp irits w ere presen t— T hen fo llow ed a pow erfu l sh ak ing o f th e tab le and apparatus, for a few m om en ts, and a signal w as given to com m ence the m usic. Mr. K oon s com ­m enced p lay in g on th e violin, and the drum s beat tim e to the m u sic for som e t im e ; then , after a m o­m en t’s cessation , another tun e w a s com m enced— the drum s beat, and the tam bourine w a s shook over our h ea d s and p assed round th e room , b ack ­w ard and forward, som etim es restin g on th e beads o f the m edium s, for a m om ent, then su pend ed over m y head— at th e sam e tim e I fe lt a b low on m y left th igh , w h ich w as lik e a sh ock o f e lectr ic ity p er­vadin g m y w h ole fr a m e ;— again, a s it p assed m e, it struck m e three tim es, produ cin g each tim e a peculiar sensation ,— every nerve fe lt its pow er. A t len gth the tam bourine dropped on the table, and the v io lin w a s tak en up and p layed in concert w ith Mr. K oons ; that, also, p assed over our heads, around th e room , for som e tim e; th e trum pet w as also used b y the Spirit, producing a soft tone, like a sw eet, fem ale voice, accom p anying the violins and b a ss drum . A t len gth the Sp irit handed m e the violin , w h ich I took and held for a few m in ­u te s ; th en th e Spirit took the harm onicon and p layed severa l tu n es accom panied w ith th e bass drum . A ll, now , seem ed h arm on iou s: the Spirits w ere now seen m ovin g abou t the room w ith a bit o f phosphorus, dancing up and dow n in every d i­rection, a s if deligh ted w ith th e m usic o f the violin. A hand w as seen, b y the ligh t o f phosphorous ; but not v ery d istin ctly— the ligh t w a s not sufficient. W hen the m u sic ceased , the Spirit sp oke through the trum pet,— som e qu estion s w ere ask ed and an­sw ered . I w a s told th at som e o f m y Spirit-friends w ere present, and w ere desirous to g ive m e a com ­m unication ; b u t could not to-night, bu t w ou ld do so before I le ft the p lace. T he Spirit th en sa id w e w ill m eet y o u again to-m orrow n igh t— bade us good n igh t, dropped the trum pet, and all w as still. T hu s ended the perform ance.

December 12.A ccord in g to appointm ent, w e w ere again in the

Spirit-room — T he perform ances w ere sim ilar to those o f la st n ig h t W h ile the tam bourine w as passing round, it rested in m y lap, and I took hold o f i t I w a s tou ch ed v e ry gently , severa l tim es, during the perform ance. The Spirits w ere seen m oving about the room , as b e fo r e ; and, a t m y re­quest, the hand cam e to m e and rested on m y own for a m o m e n t; th e y then took paper and p laced it on the table, and w ith m y p en cil w rote the follow ­in g :

“ T o Mr. H a s k e l l — There are m a n y o f yo u r Spirit-friends around y o u ; w e k n ow j-our labor and a n x ie ty ; p ress forw ard in th e good cause, and yo u r labor w ill b e instrum ental in reclaim ing m any w eary sou ls to a true kn ow led ge o f their d u ­ties to G od and them selves. W e are glad to m eet y o u here, so th at y o u m a y s e e the ev id en ce o f m an’s sta te o f im m ortality . M en are not, generally , to b lam e for their skepticism , b y reason o f the per­version o f their ru lers and clerical gu ides. A n g els are w aitin g for th eir redem ption from the thral­dom into w h ich th e y are d r a w n ; b u t th e p erver­sion o f m an is so great that th e y w ill no t b elieve their ow n senses.— G od sp eed the d a y o f their d e­liverance. G iven b y Spirit-friends, b y th e favor o f this c ircle.”

T he above w as w ritten b y th e Spirit-hand, very rapidly, not m ore than three feet from m e ; and w h en finished, th e paper w a s handed to m e, and and m y pencil returned to m e ; I saw the hand distin ctly as it handed m e th e pencil. A fter the writing, a few w ord s w ere spoken through the trum pet. I ask ed the Sp irit i f h e w ou ld answ er m e som e q u e s tio n s; h e replied, “ w e have w ritten to y o u a n d then b id m e g o o d -n ig h t; and all w as

I t flow ed in stream s o f h o n ey ed e lo ­qu en ce from th e lip s o f h im for w h om th e c ity o f M inerva m in gled h er darkest cup. I t breathed from th e T uscu lan retreat o f Cicero, and w a s pro­claim ed b y A u re liu s from the throne o f th e world. It w a s b rou gh t to lig h t from the darkn ess o f J u d e ­an superstitions, b y th e return o f the H o ly N a z arene to th e v ision o f hu nd reds o f h is frieDds. I t is the w isd om o f th e O ld T estam en t and th e F aith o f the N ew .

B u t if it still b e ask ed , how it is possib le for Spir­its to return, I answ er, b y the sam e m eth od through w h ich th e y leave th e w orld . H o w do th ey leave ? L et th e sk ep tic answ er. I f it b e ask ed how can th e y converse, w e answ er, how can m en converse on earth , th ou san d s o f m iles apart, b y an earth ly T elegraph ? A re w e told, b y th e m edium o f E lectric ity ? Y ou have th e n our an sw er, A n d w e w ou ld p ress the inquiry b y ask in g, i f m en, b y a k n ow led ge o f an E ternal P rin cip le o f N atu re, can daguerreotype a hu m an countenan ce upon a m e­tallic p late, th in k y o u it m u st be im possib le for Spirit-friends to stam p an idea, a thou ght, a sen ­ten ce , a book , upon a hu m an in te llect ? A nd w h ich is the m o st reasonable, to su p p ose that God, in th e constitu tion o f h is un iverse, left no m eans o f com m unication for h is children, or th at he h a s g iv ­en to all th e agen c ies o f reciprocal approach and friendship.

W h a t is the con seq u en ce o f all th is foo lish n ess on the part o f lookers on ? S im p ly th is :— a quiet, in ­offensive y o u n g m an is deprived o f th e so c ie ty o f a good-tem pered girl, w h o w ou id im prove h is m anners a n d b e o f grea t serv ice to h im as a friend. V ery often, if h e b e d en ied social in terchan ge o f conver­sa tion in th is w a y , or a ram ble w ith a p leasant com panion, h e w>ll look elsew here, n o t unfrequent- iy o u t o f th e pale o f resp ectab ility , for b is associ­ates. It is a bad cu stom w orth m ending, th is con­stant esp ionage th u s tryan n ica lly held in our day, and w e hope good sen se and a b etter p o licy will tend to drive ou t so foul and w ick ed a practice.— Boston Transcript.

A d m it all col­lateral issu es— art, science, com m erce and hum an enterprise— each o f w h ich h as operated m ore or less pow erfu lly in develop in g fraternal sen tim ents and relation s am ong ind ividuals and races, still to C hristianity w e m u st lo o k for the cem en t w hich has com bined all other influences, g iven th em vita­lity , and brough t th em in to harm onious action for th e com m on good o f m ankind. T he p ossession or cu lture o f w h atever is beautifu l h a s a ben eficen t effect on th e hu m an race, h en ce th e h a p p y influ­ence o f art, science, c jm m erce and le tte rs ; b u t the p ossession and cu lture o f th ese alone, n ever e l­evated a people to th e zen ith o f civilization.

G reece, w ith h er arts, h er ph ilosophy, and the vast in te llect w h ich anim ated h e r lea d in g m inds, su b tle and outw ard ly refined as sh e w as, w a s still cold in th e m id st o f h er pan th eism a s one o f her Phidian statu es. I n f i d e l R e f o r m e r s .— T o the sham e o f the Church it m u st b e confessed that th e forem ost men in all our ph ilan thropic m ovem ents, in the inter­pretation o f the Spirit o f th e age ; in the practical application o f genu in e C h ristia n ity ; in the reform a­tion o f a b u ses in h igh and low p la c e s ; in th e v in ­dication o f the r igh ts o f m an ; and in practically red eem in g h is w rongs, in the m oral and intellectual regeneration o f the race, are the so-ca lled infidels (?) in our land. T he Church has p u ssilan im ou sly left not o n ly th e w orking oar, b u t the very reins o f sal­utary reform , in th e han d s o f m en sh e denounces as inim icul to C hristianity, and w h o are practically doing w ith all their m igh t for hu m an ity’s sa k e, that w h ich th e C hurch ou gh t to be doing for Christ’s sake ; and if th e y su cceed , a s su cceed th e y w ill, in abolish in g slavery , b an ish ing rum , restrain ing li­cen tiou sness, reform in g a b u ses and e levatin g the m asses, th en the recoil upon C h ristian ity w ill be d is­astrous in the extrem e. S p i r i t - R a p p i n g i n O l d e n T im e s .— T he follow ing is an ex tract from the C hronicle o f F lorence and W orcester, a n e w book rec en tly p u b lish ed -in E n g­land. I t affords an oth er proof that “ there is n o th ­ing n ew un der th e sun :”
