'Ihe Dr. Benjamin c. Perry House is a good representative of the early 2oth century Colonial Revival style in its prin::ipal exterior elevation. Although alterations to the house in the 1980 1s have CXllSi.derabl.y charqed its interior arx:l south elevations, the principal facade retains the inposin;J ai:pearance, with the original settirg of an extensive lawn, of a OOW1b:y estate of the ~thy class of the period. Dr. Benjamin Perry {1881-1943) was b:lrn in Kens~, Marylarx:l arx:l educated at Columbian University, the predecessor of George Washin:Jtoo University in Washirgton, D.C. He graduated fran the Medical Departnent of the University in 1906. After post-graduate work at Marylam General Hospital in Baltim:::>re, a

-:sidency at the casualty Hospital in wasb.in:Jton, ani six JOOnths' service on a u.s . . avy vessel, Dr. Perry settled in Urbana, takinJ over the practice of Dr. Elisha E.

Mullenix, who had been the local '(ilysician for 30 years prior to about 1910. Dr. Perry married Minnie Nash in January of that year am the first pn:dlase of prc:perty in Urbana was in her name on February 17, 1910. 'lllree p.irdlases over the period 1910-1915 seem to have catprised the original tract of al::xJut 60 acres. Mrs. Filgene c. carusi, Dr. Perry's daughter, who was four years old wnen the family sold the property in 1919, has no information that her father hlilt the house, arrl she has assurred that her parents ~ an existirq ~. No other infonnation to confirm this has been discovered, arrl all available sources, includin;J larx:l records arx:l a personal interview with a lon}-time resident of Urbana, Mr. Marion Lawson, point to the house beirg erected shortly after the Perrys' mai:Tiage in 1910. After mJVing to :r.t:>ntgaoory County in 1919, Dr. Pen:y llt1ellt on to a d.istin3uished career, practicing in Bethesda.

'lhe Perry House is distinctly different in style fran other large cnmtry houses in the Urbana vicinity, most of the others beirg stone, brick, lCXJ, and frame houses Wilt fram the early 1800's through the late 19th century. Directly across Urbana Pike from the Perry House is the stamioff House {F-7-3; National Register), a unique architectural an:i historical lammark in Frederick Coonty, which was possibly nnved to the site fran Virginia in the 1840's, later servirq as a military school and a female seminary, as well as figuring in civil war events in the Urbana area. A nearby structure is the Dixon House {F-7-73), a brick 1856 dwelling which has been considerably altered in the early am mid-2oth century as a restaurant. Most of the other dwellings in the village are vernacular in style ani c:on&.ruction. llie Dr. 1?erry House is unique in its high-style ai:pearance arrl scale, althalgh it is not

Mr. Cliarles Seynnn:', the imkeeper arrl son of the DronebJrgs, the current prcperty owners, described the btlldirg' s ccn:li.tion prior to rehabilitation as very deteriorated, ha.virg been used as a rental property for several years. ·

outruildin3s: Althcugh none of the rutl::uilclin;Js is oc:l'rt:rib.l'tinJ, they are the remnants of what was once a farmstead an:i as such shool.d be noted. A two-story square, stilCCOed hlildin;;J with a hiA>ed oonu:.;iated metal roof may have been originally a carriage house arrl was later used as a garage. It has been remcrlel ed. for use as a guest cottage. '!he atl.y arcru:tectural feature suggestinJ its original use is the hiA>ed roof shape. '!he cottage is located south of the house arrl just east of it is a small frame arrl cxmcrete block milkin;J barn arrl milk house. '!he barn's date is difficult to estimate, b.It evidence of infill sidin;;J above the ~ entrance on the west, the extension of the gable roof on the north side, am two laivred cupolas on the roof ridge SlJ3geSt that it may have been btllt as a frame wagon shed/c:mn crib of the early 2oth century which was rerodeled with a new raised foumation wall of concrete block in the 1930's or 1940's for use as a milkin;J parlor. '!he interior has a d:rOf\Jed ceilirJ"J, ~irg any clues that may exist of a possible loft such as are fourxi in wagon sheds of the same period. '!he milk house, linked to the north side of the barn by an cpen covered walk, a:rpears to have been brllt about 1940. It is currently beirJ"J converted to a secon:i guest cottage.
