Alnæs then went to Leipzig to study with Carl Reinecke (1824-1920). Reinecke was a prolific composer of four piano concertos, three symphonies, concertos for cello, violin, harp and flute, many other works including a piano sonata for left hand only. His opus numbers reach 300. The young Norwegian’s first success was his Symphony no 1 in C minor, Op 7 premiered in 1896. He then studied on a scholarship with Julius Ruthardt (1841- 1909) who was primarily a violinist. In 1898 Alnæs’s Symphonic Variations for orchestra was premiered. For twelve years from 1895 Alnæs was the organist at Drammen and, from 1907, organist at several churches in the Oslo area and a regular conductor of choirs.
