Mathematical Vocabulary in Play

Early Learning Goal:

ELG 11: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a

given number.

Development Matters Statements Links:

(M-N2) Uses some number names accurately in play.

(M-N27) In practical activities and discussion, beginning to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting.

Year 1 (1N2c) Read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.

Ideas to meet M-N2:Using this resource: Children to play a game of snakes and ladders, taking turns to roll the dice and move accordingly. Children

may wish to trace the numbers to practise number formation.

In other areas of the classroom: Display numbers around the classroom; label objects in areas of provision using numbers; ask

children to say how many children are in their group.

Ideas to meet M-N27:Using this resource: Children to play a game of snakes and ladders, taking turns to roll the dice and move accordingly. Children

may use more than one die and combine the numbers by adding to find a total.

In other areas of the classroom: Children to play other games that involve counting, addition and subtraction; provide opportunities

for children to explore addition and subtraction using counters and objects; add and subtract using objects and hoops.
