CARLA HOSTETTER writing as LYNN SHURRJoe Dean Billodeaux, womanizing star quarterback for the New Orleans Sinners, thinks maybe he should be looking for a more wholesome sort of woman than theones who signed his list for sex after six seasons of celibacy ended. Nellwyn, achild psychologist who helps fulfill the dreams of critically ill children, comes tomind. His friends agree that Nell is exactly what Joe needs and do all they can tobring them together. But is Nell willing to take on Joe Dean with all his little prob-lems and teach him that there is more to life than sex and football?

DIANE MARQUART MOOREIn Chant of Death, the Seventh Deadly Sins, are fleshed out in a complex, narrativeof suspicion, darkness, and deceit. Straight from the headlines–of monks becom-ing ‘rock stars,’ Chant of Death is set in a fictional Benedictine Abbey in southernLouisiana. When a murder breaks the ordered, prayerfulness of the monk’s days,Father Malachi finds his powers stretched to the limit in an effort to protect theinnocent and identify the killer. Lives and philosophies conflict, setting off deadlysparks–where piety and ancient superstition often mingles; where Spanish mossveils the landscape, and a murderous soul finds a cloistered refuge.

VICTORIA I. SULLIVAN (VICKIE)When six-year-old Mary’s mother dies unexpectedly, she is “adopted” by herneighbors. She’s nearly seven feet tall, brilliant and beautiful, the result of hermother’s in vitro fertilization at a clinic in Vermilion, Louisiana. Were doctorsexperimenting on humans? Val, reluctant mother and professor of biology, becomes detective and protector. Her research on the genetics of plants with mul-tiple chromosome sets gives her insights and sympathy for this outnumbered newrace of humans, which the government and public want to eliminate. Murder, mys-tery, speculative science, and a mother’s love blend in a novel that asks us to con-sider what would happen if life were just a little bit different.
