ProtagonistThe Protagonist in this book is
the main character, Eddy Okubo. Eddy is a 16 year old, Japanese-American, at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He lies about his age and joins the army prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

AntagonistThe Antagonist of this book
could be considered the Japanese for attacking Pearl Harbor. I believe however that the antagonist is all of the Americans who become racist towards the Japanese-Americans and treated them extremely badly and denying them some of their rights, called them “Japs” and physically abused them.

Favorite CharacterMy favorite character is the main character Eddy
Okubo. He is my favorite character because he cares more about others in the book then he does himself.

Least Favorite CharacterMy least favorite character
in this book is Lt. Sweet, Eddy’s first commander after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He segregates the camp and makes all Japanese-American troops, or as he calls the “Japs,” do the hard labor and and makes sure they know that he thinks they are all spies and wants to shoot them.http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/12/30/article-1103042-02EA3ED2000005DC-521_233x423.jpg

Rising ActionThe rising action begins
when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. Eddy and his fellow Japanese-American soldiers are segregated from the other soldiers and locked in a large makeshift cage until the Americans are sure they aren’t spies.

ClimaxThe climax for the book
is when Eddy and his friends are reassigned to Cat Island, Mississippi. There, a Scientist uses the Japanese-Americans as bait to train dogs to sense and attack the Japanese race. This is in attempt to have dogs find Japanese hiding spots when in battle.

only several pages long. A general comes to check that the camp is making progress with the Japanese sensing dogs. He determines that they are not making sufficient progress and closes the camp down.

SettingThis book takes place
during World War II from about 1941 to 1942 and ranges in area from Pearl Harbor to Cat Island Mississippi. This is important to the book because Pearl Harbor is a place everyone knows about and has a sense of mourn for.

ThemesFRIENDSHIP–Eddy expresses gratitude over
having friends to help him through his trialsCOURAGE AND HONOR–In a daring water rescue,
Slim risks his life to save James from the rocky sea during a daunting storm. Eddy describes it as “the bravest thing I’d seen in the army so far.”
TRADITIONS–Eddy and Cobra capture a Japanese soldier off the coast of Hawaii. The Japanese soldier, Sakamaki, asks to be killed because he is deeply ashamed of his capture.

Book Rating5 out of 10This book was good and
fairly easy to read but it is definitely not something that I would sit down and read. The main point of the story was the sadness and trials Japanese-American faced from racism. It gave the book a very glum feel.

Social IssueThe social issue that I picked up on in this book
is Racism. Racism doesn’t accomplish anything and only creates hate between people which is splitting the world apart.
Racism is the belief that race is a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
(From Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary)
![Page 16: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Racism History shows us that one of the best ways to
fight racism is to educate people about what people/races are facing in the world. As follows are several examples in just America of Racism
![Page 17: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Native AmericansThe Native Americans had possession of North
America long before the Pilgrims arrived.Through wars, massacres, forced displacement
(such as in the Trail of Tears where they were moved to territories), and the creation of treaties, their land was taken from them and numerous hardships imposed.
Submitted to Slavery
![Page 18: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
African AmericansPre-Civil War, African Americans were submitted
to slavery and the abuse and horrid conditions that came with it such as abuse, rape, starvation, etc.
Post-Civil War, segregation occurred causing more and more hate. (Bathrooms, water fountains, schools, stores, etc.)
Example: Remember the TitansGroups like the KKK went after the Black people
to kill and hurt them.
![Page 19: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Asian AmericansJapanese Americans were moved to tenement
camps (Basically were like POW camps) during World War II.
The Chinese immigrants who worked on the Transcontinental Railroad were paid very little and given the most dangerous jobs such as blowing holes in the mountains with TNT. Many were killed or seriously injured.
![Page 20: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
And Many MoreLatin Americans (Hispanic)JewsThe list goes on and on. All facing racist jokes,
discrimination, name calling, abuse etc.
![Page 21: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Does it still exist today?Yes racism defiantly still
exists today. The movie “Freedom
Writers” proves that there is still racism in the world, and lots of it.

StatsOut of 7,755 violence incidents reported in
2000, 4,321 were committed on racial, and 754 were on an ethnicity/nat'l origin bias.
This means roughly 6 out of every 10 crimes were on racial bias, blacks being 38% of the total.
Out of those 7,755 incidents, there were 12 murders--8 of which were on racial bias. That's two-thirds.

Racism Today cont…Increasing numbers of gang fits due to raceNew racial slurs, jokes, and names being created
everyday.Jobs have been given out on the basis of race
instead of qualifications. The list goes on and onSomeone might say, “I’m just one person,
there’s nothing I can do to stop racism”…….

Song/VideoWhere is the Love
By the Black Eyed Peas
http://www.pablopda.com.ar/blog/imgdepost/where_is_the_love_blackeyedpeas_cropped.jpg
I chose this song because the whole song is basically talking about racism, hate, and abuse
![Page 26: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)

OlympicsThe 2010 Winter Olympic Games just concluded,
it was a time of excitement and unity and acceptance for the world.

Death felt around the world
Nodar Kumaritashvili, a 21-year-old luger from the country of Georgia, was killed at the Winter Games following a horrific crash on an exceedingly dangerous luge course.
There was a moment of silence held during the opening ceremony to honor him.
The majority of the world didn’t know him, but all who watched mourned for his tragic death.
![Page 29: Eyes of the Emperor](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062521/56816976550346895de15e5f/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Wrap UpIf the world could always feel that unity and
acceptance for all nationalities that we felt during that moment of silence, how amazing would this world be?
