You may not have heard of them, but you’ve probably seen some of their work.



Back in The dhow they got

They were founded by 3 dudes (John S. Johnson, David S. Johnson, and Roderic R. Richardson) in 1997.Named “Eyebeam” after the architectural I-beam, as a metaphor for the support of artistic visions offered by the organization.

Originally did digital effects and coding, and had a center for youth education.

They now focus on research & development, as well as new media art and open-source technology.



Graffiti Research Lab experimentation & innovation

The Grafti Research Lab is a group where grafti writers, artists, and protestors can use open source technologies forcommunication.This has led to some interesting innovations.

One of their most well-known projects is LASER tag.It’s an open source system for temporary grafti that involves relatively simple hardware: a camera, a projector, and a Since it’s open-source, the community can add to the functionality however they see fit.(from bu fixes to added features)

Generative grafti is a pretty cool system that allows for an organic “connect the dots” kind of movement.The particles spawn between lit windows, and repel away from the dark ones.

The Night Writer is yet another light-based tool. This 25-foot applicator provides a quick and stealthy way to apply moorganized LED art to high surfaces. You just place your message on the Night Writer backwards, slap it up on your surrun o into the night, leaving your illuminated mark behind.

So, why do they do this stu ?They have a desire to bring social awareness to large groups of people, and they have many geeky tendencies, which dchoice of medium.The also have a desire to innovate, which makes their ro ects so ahead of their time.

I think they’re pretty darn cool.They do a lot of things that I’ve always admired.Tech, working with kids, innovation, and public awareness.I think the ’re a ood rou to kee an e e on.
