causes no

symptoms and

the loss of side

vision (peripheral

vision) is u sually not recognized by the patient in earlier stages. However, by

 being a little alert, we can always cat ch the warning s igns for glaucoma. Lets know

about these warning s ymptoms of g laucoma along with tips o n its management

and treatment. We will also discuss about h ow to prevent g laucoma.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a very common eye disease which leads to irreversible blindness.

Glaucoma affects the major nerve of vision known as the op tic nerve. Optic nerve

transfers visual messages to the brain due to which we are able to see. When this

nerve gets damaged, it impairs one's vision. Glaucoma has a set p attern of 

 progres sive damage to t he opt ic nerve where it normally begins with a su btle loss

of side vision called peripheral vision. If we catch the warning symptoms of 

glaucoma earlier then it can be treated in time to avoid th e loss of central vision

which ultimately leads to blindness .

How is Glaucoma Caused?

Glaucoma is usu ally caus ed by a build up of pressu re in the eyes (intraocular 

 press ure). The elevated ey e press ure caus es damage to the op tic nerve of the eye.

The disease affects bo th the eyes bu t not always to the same extent. A fluid called

aqueous humor provides nou rishment to the front part of th e eyes. In normal

circumstances, this fluid continually gets drained which helps in maintaining

optimal pressure inside the eyes. However, due to certain factors including age,

disease, trauma etc. the chann els draining th e aqueo us h umor fluid get blocked

causing un usual press ure on t he optic ne rves leading to g laucoma. Sometimes

glaucoma may also occur even when there is normal eye pressure. The caus e for 

this type o f glaucoma is believed to be t he poor regulation of blood flow to the

optic nerve.

What are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is rightly called the silent vision stealer because it doesn't s hows off 

symptoms in the early stage. In t he most common ty pe of glaucoma called Open

Angle Glaucoma or Chronic Glaucoma, side vision gets affected first and the

 person might not at all notice the los s of peripheral vision. By the time 90% of 

 patient s reach a doctor, they have a lready lost 50% of their vision which cannot be
