    STA RTHERE

The successful kick-off of the2010 Fifa World Cup inGauteng has reaffirmed ourp r ov i n c e s status as theindisputable sporting meccaof South Africa.

Since 1993, Gauteng has, with the exception of theOlympics, hosted all of thewo r l ds biggest sportingtournaments: the SouthAfrican Formula One GrandPrix in 1993, the Rugby WorldCup in 1995, the All AfricaGames in 1998 and theCricket World Cup in 2003.

These are sportingcredentials that speak to a

passion of global standard. When the sun goes down,

our stadiums light up to thesounds of Africas mostrevered artists, including thelikes of Ismael Lo, AngeliqueKidjo and the late B re n d aFassie, all graciously blendingwith the worlds brightestsuperstars.

Here is where Africa hasdanced to the sounds ofMichael Jackson, UB40 and amyriad other acts who cannotavoid Gauteng as they tour theglobe. Gauteng is simply aworld of events and sportsrolled into an accessiblelandscape of world-classluxury and exotic experiences.

Our passion for thebeautiful game is legendaryand Gauteng-based footballteams form the backbone ofSouth Africas nationalfootball league.

Seven of the leagues 16teams are based in Gautengand have earned the provincethe reputation as the homeof champions.

    For the duration of the

World Cup, a number of fanparks and public viewingareas as well asentertainment precincts havebeen established where therewill be live music, DJs,comedy, poetry and otherforms of entertainment.

These areas will give footballcommunities from across theworld unparalleled access toWorld Cup big screens andother entertainments, allwithin a single area.

These precincts comprisepubs, restaurants andentertainment venuesclustered within particularareas, creating zones wherespectators can enjoy a varietyof activities, events andshowcases and all thiswithin comfortable walkingdistance.

Today it is the spotto find an assortment of eco-clever goods andhand-made items: silk scarves, decorated chickenand goose eggs (check out Amy Brachts Floaterrange, painted in striking monochromaticpatterns), salt and pepper shakers and if yourelooking for something inimitably South African pick up a kno bkerrie (walking stick) made byGeorge Skews under the label Duende Designs. After youve sapped your energy poring over thestalls, therere a few eateries and a tea gardenwhere you can replenish your reserves while youlisten to live music.

A well-researched (highly entertaining, somewhat insightful*) guide to the provincesbest golf courses

Hellish hills and dales on theputting surfaces that makeprecise approach shots anecessity if you want toavoid a dreaded three-putt.

    A notablenine theHighveldstop courses

Highveld are generally allsuburban in nature: easilyaccessible and self-contained,with excellent clubhouse, pro-shop and practise facilities.

Apart from weekendcompetition days, which areoften reserved for members, allthe courses mentioned welcomevisitors. Dress codes are prettymuch of international standard.

The Gauteng province has inrecent years, along with othermajor metropolitan areas in theworld, attracted a glut of gatedgolf estates. Green fees may be atouch richer than at older clubs, but the quality of the goods iswithout peer. Such coursesattract far less traffic than theircounterparts, so a tee time cangenerally be obtained withouttoo much trouble.

In the modern style, newercourses generally hew a lotmore closely to the indigenousenvironment, so you can expectfar fewer giant trees and moreof the thorn, scrub, brush andnatural savannah grasses thatcharacterise the undevelopedreaches of the Highveld.

Many of the new-style greenshave taken their cue from whatappears to be the new JackNicklaus design standard.

Golfers playing on the Highveldwill quickly discover there g i o ns major attraction: thin, windless air that lets your ballfly a mile. And in the sunnyJune-July winter months, frostburns the kikuyu fairways to acrisp, allowing for lots of roll. The combination of highaltitude and tight lies makes forplenty of flattering drives, provided you keep the blastedthing straight off the tee.

Designers of golf courses inthe Joburg-Pretoria area havehad a hundred years to workout how best to counter thegrip-it-and-rip-it brigade. Oldercourses are lined with everyvariety of exotic tree.

The beauty of an old-fashioned layout is thatgreen keepers do not have togrow the rough to penalheights; the trees do a morethan good enough job of addingshots to the scorecard. Mostcourses in Gauteng store whatthey have pumped from theirown boreholes into dams. These hazards, along withfeeder streams, will be dottedall over the show, offeringmany opportunities for self-inflicted agony.
