Spring has finally sprung, and what an exciting time of year. I absolutely love this time of year. As the weather becomes nicer, our residents will be able to enjoy the sun on our outside patio.

You may have noticed some new faces around our building. We have had a number of new residents these past few months, and we are so excited to be welcoming them into our Community. As always, thank you to our residents for welcoming them with kindness.

We understand that there has been worry about the coronavirus and want to make sure you know that we are doing everything we can to assure our residents are kept safe and secure during this time. In doing so, we have had to limit outside visitors and want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding in this matter.

As always, on behalf of our whole Parkside Community, we want to wish everyone a Happy Easter.

THIS MONTH’S silver starSHERRY CZAJKA

This month’s Silver Star is Sherry Czajka! Sherry was born and raised in Mauston, Wis., where she lived for most of her life. Her father was a section foreman and her mother worked at a factory. Sherry met her husband in high school and they married when she was 16 years old. They soon had five children and although Sherry worked as a clerk at a jewelry store for 10 years, she found more joy in being a housewife and mother. She loved cooking for her family and enjoyed baking them amazing treats. She is an extremely talented pie maker — everyone loves her delicious apple pies.

Sherry moved to Parkside at the end of January, she enjoys being close to her son who lives in DeForest. You will see Sherry out and about in our Community, always helping to bring smiles to our residents’ faces. She loves that everyone at Parkside is so kind.

JOIN US THIS MONTH FOR

easter brunchWe are excited to announce that we will be hosting an Easter Celebration for our residents and family members. We will have a morning of fun with a brunch, live music, and an egg hunt. This event will be held on Saturday, April 4. Our kitchen will be cooking us a delicious meal that will go from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Russ Loniello will then put on a great musical performance for us from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and our Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 1 p.m.

• Carry on a daily routine as much as possible.

• Stay connected with family and friends by telephone, writing them a letter or email, or by using social media.

• Keep physically active as much as you can. Take advantage of the limited walks when possible, get up and walk around your apartment, and do simple seated stretches.

• Use this time as an opportunity: Read that book you’ve been wanting to get to, work on your favorite crafting project or hobby, take on a puzzle (Try the ones here in the newsletter!), start a journal, or learn something new.

• Unleash your inner artist with coloring pages or take up drawing or sketching.

• Organize something you’ve put off, such as that pile of papers, a drawer or shelf.

• Listen to your favorite music.

• If it’s possible, use your TV’s streaming service to catch up on some classic movies or one of those popular TV shows everyone’s talking about.

• Use your tablet or computer and research some topics you’ve always been interested in, learn some phrases in a foreign language, watch a YouTube tutorial or TED talk, or just laugh at some animal videos!

• Above all, maintain a positive attitude. You have likely coped with difficult situations before, and be reassured that you will cope with this current situation as well.

oilerie presentationA special thank-you to Lori Hackman, owner of the Oilerie of Sun Prairie, for such an interesting and informative presentation last month. Lori taught us the benefits of olive oil and the positive effect it can have on the brain.

This month’s HEART Hero is PATRICIA TANS. Pat started at Parkside in March, as our LPN.Pat was born and raised on the north side of Milwaukee. After high school she went on to get her LPN at Sacred Heart School of Practical Nursing, in West Allis. Pat has an extensive background in nursing, including work in hospitals, long-term care, physician’s office, and assisted living. She has a strong passion for working with the elderly.Pat has been married to her husband for 40 years and they have three sons together and three grandchildren. She has lived in many places including Fort Myers, Fla., and Greendale, Waukesha, Racine, Beaver Dam, and Sun Prairie, Wis. Her husband and she moved to DeForest last year.During her free time she enjoys sewing and quilting, and spending time with her family. Pat also spends a lot of time with her 8-year-old min pin and chihuahua mixed dog, Minnie.Pat’s favorite thing about Parkside is the personal attention our residents receive and our great teamwork.

With our new neighbors and friends moving in, we would like to take a moment to introduce our resident ambassador, Joyce Klute.Joyce and her husband, Duane, joined our Community in 2015. Joyce spreads joy throughout our building on a daily basis, always willing to lend a helping hand to our staff and residents. Joyce fully lives up to her resident ambassador duty by doing her best to make sure our residents feel welcome and included.Joyce is also the leader of our Resident Council Committee. Resident Council is an organized group of residents who meet to discuss and address concerns about their rights, quality of care and quality of life. Joyce will go above and beyond, along with our other resident council members Kathleen, Diane and Roy, to ensure you are living life to the fullest at Parkside!When you see Joyce around, be sure to thank her for all she does for us!
