SCENE 1: Bella’s Birthday Dream

EXT. THE MEADOW – AFTERNOON

A lush, green meadow with wildflowers. A sunny, cloudless day.

BELLA is standing in the center of the meadow, eyes closed, breathing deeply, and taking in the sun. She opens her eyes and turns as if to leave, but is startled to find someone standing a few feet in front of her. GRANDMA MARIE, an elderly woman with white hair and wrinkles, looks at Bella, just as startled.

Bella and Grandma Marie smile at the same time, and both open their mouths to speak, but –

EDWARD(off screen, calling)

Bella?

Bella and Grandma Marie both turn at the same time, and gasp.

EDWARD walks towards them, smiling hugely, his face sparkling in the sunlight. Bella holds up a hand, her eyes wide, trying to warn him not to come closer and as subtly as possible, inclines her head towards Grandma Marie, who is off screen. Edward doesn’t stop.

GRANDMA MARIE’S POV – Edward stands next to Bella’s right, and puts his arm around Bella’s shoulders, still smiling, and faces Grandma Marie fully. Bella bits her lip, nervous.

BELLA’S POV – Grandma Marie stares back at Bella and Edward, biting her lip as well. She slowly extends her left arm out to her side, as if putting her arm around the waist of an invisible being.

Slowly PAN out, as Bella reaches out to touch Grandma Marie, who also reaches out to Bella. By the time Bella’s fingers reach the glass, PAN out far enough to reveal a large oval, golden frame surrounding Grandma Marie, recognizable as a

mirror, with Bella and Edward facing the mirror, Bella’s arm around Edward’s waist.

Bella jerks her hand back, and slowly raises it to her face, touching her wrinkled face – Grandma Marie’s face. Her eyes widen with shock at the realization. Edward kisses her cheek.

EDWARD(whispers in Bella’s ear)Happy Birthday, love.

Bella screams.CUT TO:

INT. BELLA’S BEDROOM – MORNING

BELLA is lying in bed, eyes closed, screaming. Her eyes open abruptly and she sits up, no longer screaming, and trying to catch her breath. Her alarm clock changes from 6:29 to 6:30, and the radio turns on.

RADIO WEATHER REPORTER(off screen)

…and now a look at the weather for today, Tuesday, September 13th. Overcast skies with….

Bella turns off the radio, irritated.

BELLA(V.O., while she stands up and grudgingly walks to the

bathroom.)I’d been dreading this day for months.

INT. BATHROOM – MORNING

BELLA(V.O., CONT’D, as Bella stares into the bathroom mirror and

sighs. Leans forward and scrutinizes her face, as if looking for wrinkles or other signs of aging.)

I could feel it - I was older. Every day I got older, but this was different, worse, quantifiable.

Bella stands back again; the only visible wrinkles are on her forehead, from anxiety.

BELLA(V.O., CONT’D)

I was eighteen. And Edward never would be.

SCENE 4: Movies in Port Angeles

EXT. PORT ANGELES, OUTSIDE OF MOVIE THEATRE – NIGHT

BELLA and JESSICA walk out of the movie theatre. Jessica is chatting animatedly, Bella is subdued, uninterested. Other movie goers walk around and past them.

JESSICA…That was SO scary! We’re going to have nightmares tonight

– zombie nightmares!

BELLAYeah. Nightmares, definitely.

Jessica stops, so Bella does. Jessica turns to look at Bella, and pauses for a moment.

JESSICASo….where do you want to go to eat?

BELLA(shrugs)

Doesn’t matter.

Jessica sighs and rolls her eyes. She starts walking down the street again and Bella follows, half a step behind. See McDonald’s arches down the road. Jessica does not like the silence.

JESSICAI didn't think you were scared—I was screaming all the time, but I didn't hear you scream once.

(waits but Bella doesn’t respond)Bella? (turns to look at Bella)

Bella has stopped walking and is staring down a dark alley. She shudders.

FLASHBACK – dark alley, Bella walking alone. Two men walk from the other end of the alley towards her.

BACK TO PRESENT – Bella shakes her head, trying to remove the memory.

JESSICA(CONT’D, concerned)

Bella?

BELLA(mumbles)

Sorry. Déjà vu.

Jessica looks at Bella questioningly but Bella ignores her. They continue walking. Jessica glances at Bella anxiously, worried that she’s going to have a breakdown. Bella sees this and tries to change the subject.

BELLA(feigning interest)

So….what’s up with you and Mike these days?

JESSICA(exasperated)

We broke up ages ago, Bella! Didn’t you know?

BELLA(awkward)

Oh. Sorry.

JESSICA(shrugs)

I go out with Conner sometimes.(rolls her eyes)

I even went out with Eric a few weeks ago.

BELLA(sees an opportunity)

Eric? You’re kidding! Who asked who? Where did you go?

JESSICA(laughs)

He did - I didn’t know how to turn him down nicely. I wish I had backed out though – it was SO awkward, you wouldn’t

believe it. First, he picked me up in his –

She realizes Bella has stopped walking again. Across the street is a bar. Four men are lounging outside the door. They are loud, slightly intoxicated. Bella stares at them.

FLASHBACK – Four men harass Bella. A silver Volvo comes speeding around the corner…the memory ends before Edward gets out of the car.

BACK TO PRESENT – Bella is still staring at the men at the bar, breathing heavily and obviously afraid. She takes a step forward unconsciously.

JESSICA(nervous)

Bella! What are you doing?!

The men have noticed Bella. One steps forward - similar in build to one of the men in Bella’s memory.

MAN(calls to Bella)Hello there.

JESSICA(urgently)Bella!

BELLA(distracted)

I think I know him…

Bella walks forward, as if in a daze. She doesn’t take her eyes off the man who spoke to her.

JESSICAAre you crazy?!

BELLA(still not looking away from the man, speaking to Jessica)

Go eat. I’ll catch up.

Bella takes one more step and then freezes when she hears–

EDWARD(furious, off screen)

Bella, stop this right now!

Bella gasps in shock, and puts her hand on her chest as she tries to keep breathing. She blinks slowly several times,

as if taking in the scene for the first time. She looks around, but Edward is no where to be found.

EDWARD(CONT’D, off screen)

Go back to Jessica. You promised. Nothing stupid.

Bella shakes her head, confused. Looks around again.

EDWARD(CONT’D, off screen, fading)

Keep your promise.

BELLA(closes her eyes, whispers)

Don’t go.

MAN(calls to Bella)

You lost?

BELLANo.

Bella continues forward.

EDWARD(angry, off screen)Bella, turn around!

Bella smiles and sighs in relief. But now she is close enough to the men to see they are not the same men from her memory. Her smile fades as her fear does.

BELLA(to men at bar)

Sorry, I thought you were someone else.

MANThat’s OK. Stay and hang out with us anyway.

Bella shakes her head and walks back to Jessica.

BELLAThanks, but no.

Jessica is staring at Bella, incredulous. Bella keeps walking past her.

BELLA(CONT’D, to Jessica, as if nothing happened)

Come on, let’s go eat.

Jessica catches up with Bella and walks with her.

JESSICAWhat were you thinking?!

Bella shrugs but doesn’t answer.

JESSICA(CONT’D, annoyed)

You are so weird, Bella. I don’t even know you anymore.

BELLA(indifferent)

Sorry.

INT BELLA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

Bella is in PJs.BELLA

(V.O. while tidying her room, getting ready for bed.She lays in her bed, awake, thinking.)

What had happened tonight, some kind of hallucination? Triggered by déjà vu? Option one: I was crazy. Option two:

My subconscious was giving me momentary relief from the pain. I could see no option three, so I hoped it was the

second option.

Bella continues to mull it over for a moment, then curls into a ball and begins to sob uncontrollably.

SCENE 3: Bella Meets Laurent

EXT. CULLEN’S HOUSE – DAY

BELLA is driving her truck up the long winding drive to the Cullen’s house. The vegetation surrounding the house is overgrown, encroaching on the road, clearly neglected for some time.

Bella parks in front of the house and slowly gets out of the truck.

The house is dark and quiet with a feeling of abandonment. Bella takes a few steps towards the house but not close enough to look in the windows, trembling, on the verge of tears.

BELLA(whispers)Edward?

Silence. Bella closes her eyes and tries to listen harder.

BELLA(CONT’D, a little louder, voice breaking)

Edward?

Bella covers her face, no longer able to stop the tears. Without paying attention to where she is going she runs (stumbles a few times) into the forest surrounding the house. She stops when she realizes she has entered a clearing, drops to her knees and tries to control her sobs.

Abruptly Bella looks up, aware she isn’t alone. LAURENT is standing across the clearing, too far to see clearly, just a dark outline. He is standing very still and his posture is reminiscent of Edward.

Bella stands up, slowly, hopeful.

Laurent takes a few slow steps forward and comes into focus.

BELLA(surprised, but not scared)

Laurent!

LAURENT(just as surprised)

Bella? I didn’t expect to see you here.

BELLAWell, I do live here.

LAURENT(innocently curious)

But the Cullens have left, and you are still here? I thought you some sort of pet of theirs?

BELLA(tries to stay composed)

Um…something like that. I thought you went to Alaska? To learn how to live, you know, with humans?

LAURENTOh, I did. Met a lovely coven there. But the lifestyle is

difficult. Sometimes, I cheat. (smiles)

Suddenly Bella notices Laurent’s eyes – red. She trembles and steps back, now afraid.

LAURENT(casually stepping towards her)Do the Cullens visit often?

EDWARD(anxious, whispers, off screen)

Lie!

BELLA(trying to stay calm, both excited and scared at the same

time)Now and then.

LAURENT(disbelieving)

Really?

EDWARD(urgent, off screen)

You must lie better than that, Bella.

BELLAI’ll tell Carlisle you stopped by. But I won’t mention it to (deep breath) Edward….he’s still touchy about the whole James thing, and he has such a temper. (tries to be casual)

LAURENTHmmm…I came here as a favor to Victoria, actually. She

won’t be happy I found you today…

BELLA(visibly frightened but still trying to stay composed)

Why?

LAURENTShe wanted to kill you herself. Mate for mate, you see. But I’m hunting today. I am quite thirsty and you do

smell...(breathes in deeply and smiles)…simply mouthwatering.

EDWARD(desperate, off screen)

Threaten him!

BELLA(frantic)

He - He’ll know it was you! You won’t get away with it!

LAURENT(laughs)

Edward has no reason to suspect me, if he even cares to investigate.

EDWARD(off screen)

Beg!

BELLA(pleading)Please.

LAURENTBe happy I’m the one who found you, Bella, and not Victoria.

You won’t feel a thing, I promise. Oh, if you only knew what she has planned for you….you’d be thanking for me, I

swear.

Bella closes her eyes and cowers in fear; she knows this is the end.

BELLA(whispers)

Edward, I love you.

Laurent doesn’t attack. He stares at the edge of the forest where 5 huge WOLVES have emerged from. They form a V formation in the middle of the clearing, the large black wolf in the center closest to Laurent, the last one on the

left side, reddish-brown, just inches from Bella. The wolves GROWL at Laurent.

Bella looks up, surprised that Laurent hasn’t attacked yet and frightened by the growls. She’s taken aback by the wolves. Laurent is staring in fear at the wolves, no longer watching Bella.

EDWARD(whispers, off screen)Don’t move an inch.

The reddish-brown wolf closest to Bella turns its head to look at her. She stares at it, too terrified to breathe. The wolf gives a small WHINE, as if trying to communicate with Bella. The wolf in the center GROWLS and the reddish-brown wolf faces Laurent again.

Suddenly, Laurent turns and runs into the forest. The wolves chase after him, GROWLING.

Bella catches her breath and runs back to the house and to her truck, trying not to scream and draw attention to herself.

SCENE 4: Jacob Gives Bella A Clue

INT. BELLA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

BELLA is sleeping restlessly in her bed. A SCRATCHING sound comes from the window and she sits up. VICTORIA suddenly appears in front of her bed. Bella screams as Victoria crouches, ready to spring.

CUT TO:

Bella (alone) is sleeping restlessly in her bed. Her eyes open abruptly and a scream catches in her throat as she tries to calm down from the nightmare. More SCRATCHES from the window. Bella sits up immediately, eyes wide, pulls the covers up around her in fear, on the brink of tears.

JACOB(off screen, hissing)

Bella! Open the window!

Bella catches her breath, and after a moment goes to the window and pulls back the curtains. JACOB is hanging from the tree outside her window. Bella opens the window, staring incredulously at Jacob.

BELLAJacob? What are you doing?

Jacob swings his body to gain momentum.

JACOB(strained with the effort of what he’s doing)

I’m trying to keep –

Jacob swings in through the window and lands gracefully on his feet. He is shirtless, muscular, and towers over Bella. Bella jumps out of the way just in time.

JACOB(CONT’D, smirking, proud of himself)

my promise.

Bella’s face goes from shock to anger. She tries to push Jacob back to the window but he doesn’t budge.

BELLAGet out!

Bella jerks her hand away.BELLA

(CONT’D, concern breaking through anger)Do you still have a fever? Your skin is burning!

JACOBUm, no. I’m not sick. I came to apologize.

Bella loses it. She is exhausted, stressed, and recovering from her fear and anger. She collapses onto the bed.

JACOB(CONT’D, concerned)

Hey, you okay?

Bella covers her face with her hands, on the brink of tears.

BELLAWhy in the world would I be okay, Jacob?

Jacob sits on the bed next to Bella.

JACOB(sincere, but bitter)

Bella, I….I’m sorry. I want to explain –

Bella wipes away the tears and looks at Jacob.

BELLA(hint of impatience)So, explain then.

Jacob takes a deep breath, and starts to talk, but his breath catches in his throat. He tries two more times but each time he loses his breath. Bella looks at him like he’s lost his mind.

JACOB(defeated)

I can’t. I wish I could.

BELLA(accusing)

You just don’t want to. (kinder)

You know you can tell me anything, Jacob.

JACOB(pleading)

Look, Bella, haven’t you ever had a secret that you couldn’t tell anyone?

FLASHBACK – flash scenes of the Cullens – at Bella’s birthday party, in the school cafeteria, playing baseball. All scenes with all the Cullens, not singling out Edward.

JACOB(CONT’D, V.O.)

Something you felt like you had to keep from Charlie, from your mom? Something you won’t even talk about with me? Not

even now?

BACK TO PRESENT – Bella presses her lips together and takes a deep breath, but doesn’t say anything. Jacob reaches for her hand.

JACOB(CONT’D)

Can you understand that I might have the same situation? Loyalty – (snorts and shakes his head) – Sometimes, it’s not

your secret to tell.

Bella shakes her head, not understanding.

BELLA(wearily)

Why are you here Jacob? To give me riddles?

JACOB(groans)

The worst part is – you already know! I’ve already told you.

BELLA(frustrated)

You haven’t told me anything!

JACOB(excited)

Yeah! Yeah, that’s it! I can’t tell you, but you can guess!

BELLA(shaking head)

I still don’t understand. Guess what?

JACOBMy secret! You can do it – you know it already!

Jacob waits, but Bella doesn’t answer.

JACOB(CONT’D)

Come on, Bells! Remember at First Beach, last spring?

FLASHBACK – Jacob and Bella walking along the beach.

BELLA(thinking, remembering, V.O.)

We went for a walk on the beach…

FLASH BACK – The Cullens attacking the buck, making the truce with the Quileutes. No wolves in her memory.

BELLA(CONT’D, V.O.)

You told me scary stories.

BACK TO PRESENT –

JACOB(excited)

Yes! Do you remember what I told you about Quileutes?

Bella tries to remember but can’t.

BELLA(tired but apologetic)

Jake, I’m exhausted. Maybe in the morning…

JACOB(shrugs, bitter)

I guess I understand why you only remember the one story.(sighs)

You still feel loyal to them, don’t you? Even after….(Bella grimaces, Jacob stops mid sentence)

For me, it’s worse. I’m forced to be loyal, bound so tight….

Bella puts her hand on Jacob’s shoulder, sad for his pain.

BELLACan’t you get free? What if we ran away – you and me?

Leave Sam behind?

JACOB(sad)

No Bella. It’s not something I can run away from. Life sentence. Maybe longer.

(pauses, looks at Bella tenderly)I would run with you, if I could.

Bella and Jacob look at each other for a moment, an unspoken bond.

JACOB(CONT’D, reluctantly)

I have to get back. I snuck out – I’m not supposed to see you.

BELLA

They won’t know you came here. I won’t tell them.

JACOB(sighs, sad)

You won’t have to. They’ll know.

BELLA(angry)

I hate Sam and his stupid cult!

JACOB(taken aback)

No, it’s not Sam’s fault. Sam’s actually….really great. All the guys are.

BELLA(incredulous)

Sam’s great?! Wha-? Then why can’t you see me?

JACOB(head down, mumbles)

They think it’s not safe.(looks up suddenly, assuring Bella)

But if I thought it was too dangerous, I wouldn’t have come.

Bella is confused.

JACOB(CONT’D)

Do me a favor, Bells, okay? Figure this out. Really try. And when you do, come and tell me right away.

Jacob stands and pulls Bella into a hug, then abruptly turns away and heads toward the window.

JACOB(CONT’D, sadly)

I mean, if you’ll still want to see me.

BELLAJake, why –

(sees him about to climb out the window)No, Jake! You’ll break your leg. Use the door –

Jacob is already out the window and gone.

JACOB

(off screen, softly from a distance)Get some sleep, Bells.

Bella sighs and falls back into bed. She is exhausted and falls asleep quickly.

EXT. FOREST CLEARING – DAY (dream)

Bella is in the clearing near the Cullen house and Laurent is staring at her. Bella turns and sees the huge reddish brown wolf next to her. She stares deep into its black eyes. ZOOM IN on the eyes.

While ZOOMING OUT from the eyes - JACOB(V.O.)

Did you know Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves?

BELLA(V.O.)

Like, wolves? Real wolves?

JACOB(V.O.)

Well, that’s the legend of our tribe….

- it’s no longer the wolf’s eye Bella was staring into. It’s Jacob’s. He is smiling as he stares back at Bella.

CUT TO:INT. BELLA’S BEDROOM – DAWN

Bella is sleeping in her bed and jolts awake from the dream, breathing heavily and sitting up.

BELLAWerewolf!
