Expressions used with 'avoir'

The verb 'avoir' is used in some expressions where we do NOT use the verb 'to have' in English. Here

are some of the most common:

When we talk about our age:

J'ai vingttrois ans. !" am #$.%

When you talk about what you need:

J'ai besoin de trois oeufs. !" need three eggs.%

When you talk about what you are afraid of:

J'ai peur de prendre l'avion.! "'m afraid of fling.%

Nous avons peur de faire une erreur. !1e are afraid of ma2ing a mista2e.%

3es filles ont peur du noir. !The girls are afraid of the dar2.%

When we talk about heat or cold:

Tu as froid. !4ou're cold.%

"l n'a pas chaud. ! He isn't warm.%

Elles n'ont pas froid. !The aren't cold.%

When we talk about being hungry or thirsty:

J'ai faim. !"'m hungr.%

When we say we are right or wrong:

J'ai raison. !"'m right.%
