A Message From the Board

Bill Gravelle Chair
When the Depot Foundation was established in 1979 the nine original incorporators could not have foreseen the economic impact the COVID 19 pandemic would have. Not only has the pandemic impacted the for-profit business world but has significantly curtailed the ability of the tenants of the Historic Union Depot to provide programs or access to exhibits resulting in complete loss of revenue for a short time and greatly reduced revenue currently.
The policies of the Foundation do not provide for grants to support operating costs for tenants. The board has the authority to change policy and has done so temporarily. To date, $49,359.00 has been granted to various tenants of the Depot building to maintain staff and pay monthly operating costs.
The Depot Foundation is currently a private foundation and is required to distribute five percent of assets each year as grants. The operating grants that have been made are considered allowable grants for that purpose but the contribution received from the Muriel Whiteside Trust must be used for program grants and must be identified by a certain date. Because of the inability of tenants to provide definite programs. The Trustees and committee of the Whiteside Trust have provided some flexibility in identifying grantees. We thank them for their support.
The board desires to regain status as a public foundation. A consultant has been engaged to develop a job description for a Director of Development position. When that is completed a search to fill that position will be conducted. Regaining public foundation status will take time. The bottom line is the Foundation needs more individuals to support it. We thank all of you that have been donors.
During the past year, the Foundation has rolled out a new web site. Log on to [email protected] and check it out. Among its many features, it allows for tenants to apply for grants online and for staff and board members to review also. A big thank you for Tracy Hansen for her efforts on this project.
Thanks to the board members who have worked so hard during the past year. The Foundation has been fortunate in having talented and dedicated individuals willing to serve. Varied backgrounds and skills have allowed the Foundation to fulfill its mission and to grow.
