“D-Lab Express!”

The “Discipleship Lab” is back! Saturday, October 5th, 10:30-Noon. There

will be three “labs” to choose from as before, but this time around I’ve

tightened up the schedule to just 90 minutes and moved the start time

back from 9 AM to 10:30. (Nine AM on a Saturday morning? What was I

thinking!) Here’s a quick look at the labs you can choose from:

JOURNALING: Learn a simple yet powerful way to read and

reflect on Scripture that can help you write short journal

entries each day. Over time you’ll collect your own

library of insights and be able to see how your faith

journey has unfolded! Even better – connect with other

journalers for support, encouragement and sharing your

lives. Led by Sara Ruff.

SABBATH: One of the most misunderstood and underused

parts of Christian life is the practice of Sabbath. Pastor

Tim will share his own experiences with Sabbath to

illustrate how it truly is a gift and not just another rule

you have to keep! We’ll explore what a Sabbath

practice might look like for you that would be life-giving

and realistic.

MANNA AND MERCY: This wonderful book tells the Biblical

story in the most winsome way that you’ll probably ever

encounter! With incredibly clear language and delightful

illustrations, Pastor Daniel Erlander’s book will help you

get a feel for the “Big Story” and for God’s heart behind

it all. Pastor John will introduce the book and share ways

that you could connect with others around it.

To Register: It’s totally fine to just show up on Saturday, but helpful if we

know you’re coming! Register by calling the church (651-457-6541),

signing up at the Welcome Center, or online here:

Contemplative Prayer and Study

We’re back—the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month—October 9 and 23 with

Contemplative worship at 7:15-7:45 p.m. in the Chapel ;

Contemplative study & conversation 7:45-8:45p.m. in Room 204/205.

On September 25 we started a new book: “Contemplating Christ The Gospels and

Interior Life” by Vincent Pizzuto

Contemplative prayer practice is a invitation to 2, 20 minute times of prayer each day.

The prayer is based on quieting our minds and opening our hearts to God. We are helped by a word or

phrase that returns our focus, which is always running off, to God. If you haven’t tried it you will be surprised

at the levels of God’s grace that surround you!

Capital View Café, 637 Smith Avenue, St Paul

Men’s Renewal Breakfast – Come for conversation on the text

for the coming Sunday! This groups meets on Fridays, 7:30 am at

the Capitol View Cafe on Smith Avenue every other week.

Dates for October are Oct. 4 and 18. All men are welcome!

Rooted in the Word First Saturday of the Month

October 5 | 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.

Joseph’s Grill, 140 S. Wabasha St., Saint Paul

"Rooted in the Word" is our monthly Bible study and discussion group, meeting on the

first Saturday of the month at Joseph's Grill for breakfast at 8:30 am. Beginning in

October we will start exploring a wonderful book by Lutheran pastor Daniel Erlander,

entitled Manna and Mercy: A Brief History of God's Unfolding Promise to Mend the

Entire Universe. This book walks through the Bible as one overarching story in which

God's people are partners in the work God is doing in the world. You can explore a

copy of the book at the Connection Center and sign up to purchase one if you like for

$10. Highly recommended by Pastor Tim!

CONNECTIONS IN STEWARDSHIP Fall is arriving, school and Faith Formation is starting, and it feels good to be back

on a schedule with the kids again. It’s good to be back more at church also! I

can feel that flow again from this community – stepping back into it and feeling

how that flow works for me and takes me out of my more selfish summer focus. It’s

amazing what connections do for the heart and soul. Stewardship is about con-

necting – it’s not just a word we use in church, and it’s not code for fund-raising or

a plea for your money. It simply the way of life, of how we should live – living a

generous, connected life that can transform the world.

If you missed the Thrivent Financial Adult Forum on 9/29/19, check out these innovative ways offered to help

you transform our world and fulfill goals not only at St Stephens but also for other organizations you support

with time, talent and treasures. Enjoying life’s journey means confidently living a life based on values, not valu-

ables and sharing our gifts with others to ensure God’s world remains a beautiful one.

FORUMOFFERINGS

We hope to see you in the lounge, Sunday mornings, after worship service (approximately 10:40 am) as we

learn about and discuss a wide variety of significant issues throughout the year. Bring a cup of coffee with

you. Here’s the line up for October:

October 6 “Let’s Talk” with Dr. Nadia Mohamed. What’s new with our multi-year dialog with our Muslim

friends? How are both faith communities faring during these turbulent times? What is everyday life like for a

Muslim? Bring your questions.

October 13 “Civic Engagement.” Pastor John will lead us as we look at what Martin Luther had to say

regarding living in the world. What would Luther think of our contemporary society?

October 20 To be determined—watch for more information.

October 27 “Divided Government.” State Senator Matt Klein, M.D., (DFL) joins with State Senator Karin

Housely (2018 Republican candidate for U.S. Senate) in discussing how persons of different political parties

work together at the State Capitol.

Hello from the Fellowship

Committee!

The August Saints game, September Patio Party and

Welcome-Back Potluck Brunch were lots of fun, thanks

to all who attended.

Have you ever accidentally signed up to do two things

scheduled for the same time? It happens to me every

now and again. Like the time I realized that the

September 5 patio party was scheduled when we also had houseguests visiting from Australia. We

decided to bring our guests along to the patio party. In a small-world coincidence, they met

three different people from our congregation who had lived in Australia! Our guests felt a sense of

belonging, even though they were far from home. This is what fellowship aims to do — foster

connections with each other and the larger world. Above are some pictures from that event.

Your Fellowship Committee:

Patrice Katzenmaier, Kathy Canniff, Joanna Mead, Jolene Sather, Robin Thoreson, and Sara Ruff.

Sunday, October 6 10:40am Rooms 204/205

Join Pastor John for a conversation about the meaning of baptism in the

Christian life. All those desiring the sacrament of baptism are required to receive

instruction. Please contact the church office if you are planning to attend.

Thank you.

TOOLS FOR Discipleship

FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH: “ABIDE”

Jesus teaches us that love is the center of life and faith. His summary of what’s truly

important is that we should “Love the Lord your God with all your heart… and your

neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) We are also taught that being loved comes before

being loving. As it says in 1 John 4:19 “We love because he first loved us.” So the starting

point in life is learning to be loved, which is surprisingly difficult for many of us!

Jesus uses a particular word and a powerful image to talk about remaining open and connected to God

to receive that love. The word is Abide, and the image is the Vine and Branches in John 15:1-11. “I am the

vine, you are the branches” he says, “Abide in me as I abide in you.” To abide is to remain intimately con-

nected to God, receiving the flow of love as a way of life. The L-shaped Pipe metaphor (Tool #1) points this

out as well, reminding us that there’s no outflow without an inflow first. That’s why the icon for Abide has the

pipe shape with a circle at the top to focus our attention on the inflow first.

How do we learn to Abide? The answer to that may be different for different people, and it may be differ-

ent for the same person at different times! But a good starting point is to look at the beautiful moment of

abiding between Jesus and the Father at his baptism. (Mark 1:9-11) What we see there is Jesus simply listen-

ing, “soaking it up” as the Father declares three things to him: You are my son, I love you, and I’m pleased

with you. For us, learning to be loved can begin by spending time in prayer simply listening to the Father

just as Jesus did. Listen to the Father speak those same words to you. Let it wash over you and soak into

your heart.

Abiding is the starting point for a renewed life spiritually, so make it a practice and a priority. As your own

sense of being unfathomably loved by God grows, that love will transform your life and spill over into the

lives of those around you in the most wonderful ways!

The “Insight Timer” Smartphone App

This app links to a huge number of meditation and mindfulness recordings but I just use it for

the wonderful timer it includes. You can use the timer to set up different periods of silence

that are set apart by your choice of sound, such as a gong or bell. You can save your timer

settings and use them to “mind the clock” for you in different times of prayer. For example, I

often use a timer I created that has three 5-minute stretches of silence with a (quiet) gong

in between them. I use the first five minutes as speaking time in prayer, telling the Lord

about how I’m actually doing that day. Sometimes it’s a surprise to me to find out how I’m

actually doing! The second five minutes is focused on listening to the Lord. Sometimes I

listen for things I know that the Lord is always saying, like “I love you!” and “You belong to me.” Other

times I simply ask “What is your word for me today? and see what comes. In the third five minutes, I turn to

the many people and concerns that are on my heart. You can create and save whatever timers are

helpful to you! Let me know if you’d like some help in using this tool and exploring how it can serve your

prayer life. Find it online at insighttimer.com.

We live in an interesting and exciting time----yet it can also be filled with anxiety. How do you handle it when things are stressful---do you hide, do you seek help, do you pray? Well I have come across this wonderful list of verses---Verses that can ease your heart. Verses that draw you to God. Verses that might be great to look up, memorize and have in our hearts for those times when life is difficult and you want to place your strength in God. If your heart is feeling anxious today, I pray the peace that passes all understanding will fill your heart as you meditate on these Scrip-tures. PEACE DOES EXIST and GOD IS able to give it TO YOU.

Did you see the recent newspaper article sharing the news that General

Mills’ 23 year old Box Tops for Education program is going digital? Put your

scissor away and get out your phone or tablet and download the new

mobile app. Once downloaded scan your store receipts within 14 days of

your purchases. The app will automatically analyze which products are

eligible and tabulate the amount that will be donated to your school of

choice. In the past all collected coupons at St Stephen’s were given to

support Garlough Elementary. Every box top is still worth 10 cents. These

coupons can be found on a variety of products like: baking supplies, bake

ware, cereal, food storage, frozen foods, paper products, school and office supplies, waste bags and the

list goes on. The labels look like the ones pictured above right. Thank you for helping our neighborhood

youth! A special thank you to Shirley Eisfelder for sharing this article with us. Thanks Shirley!

Youth Forum Has Started!

Join Ali on Sunday mornings for Youth Forum.

What is Youth Forum?

Youth Forum is a time on Sundays where the Youth

can come have a conversation with other youth

usually on the topic of the Sermon that day or on

another faith based topic. It is in the youth room at

10:45am after the service.

Who is it for?

For any youth that is able and willing to have conver-

sations about faith and life.

Why is it important?

It is important because it allows the youth to learn

and grow not only on a Wednesday but on a Sunday.

It gets them in worship with others. It gives them a

chance to build relationships with people they

wouldn’t necessarily talk to otherwise.

The Fellowship Committee is thinking of an out-

ing guaranteed to make you laugh. We would like

to attend “The Church Basement Ladies in Hark!

The Basement Ladies Sing”. Before officially of-

fering to the St Stephen’s community, neighbors and

friends we are looking to find out who would be in-

terested in attending. We would like to get a group

of at least 10 or more so we can get the group rate.

The date that they are looking at is Sunday,

November 24th, 2pm matinee. Carpooling from

church would be available. Tickets would be about

$42.

Are you interested in an afternoon of fun and laugh-

ter? Sign up at the Connection Center, call the

church office at 651-457-6541 or shoot jan an email

[email protected]—please respond by Sunday,

October 13.

Want more information? Check out the Ames thea-

tre website at https://www.ames-center.com/church-

basement-ladies-hark or talk to any of the Fellowship

Committee members. They would be happy to help.

Church-wide Event – Wednesday, October 30

LOVE in a Ziploc Bag!

Last year’s event was a great success! Join us again this year as we

assemble 100 gift bags and then take one with you to put in your car

and give to a person in need. This event is being put on by the Faith

Formation crew of St. Stephen’s and Salem Lutheran Churches.

Ways you can help:

Look for the sign-up board in the Narthex for details on the items you can contribute and

quantities needed (hats, socks, granola bars, and more)

Join us on Wednesday, October 30 to assemble the bags. All are welcome to help us bag and

share the love with our neighbors in need! Christine Davis (St Stephen’s) and Pam Taulman

(Salem) are the organizers of this event.

Watch for more details in the Looking Ahead!
