The journey is as extraordinary as the destination when you travel to the Far East. You'll have the opportunity to indulge in local dishes and folkloric entertainment designed to bring the exotic cultures, colours and flavours of the region to life.

Ashore you'll discover extraordinary destinations.

TOKYO - Yokohama and Edo began life as sleepy fishingvillages. That changed in the early 17th century afterTokugawa Ieyasu became Shogun. Edo became the centerof political power in Japan, a position the city retained evenafter the restoration of Imperial rule in 1866. ContemporaryTokyo may be the most astonishing city on earth. It's a para-doxical mix of ancient tradition and postmodern culture. TheGinza - an international shopping mecca - stands near theserene grounds of the Imperial Palace, and the hyper-speedof 21st century consumerism is mysteriously reconciled withthe elegance and serenity of traditional culture. Tokyoprovides the traveler with a dizzying experience. With theMeiji Restoration of 1868, Edo was renamed Tokyo, the"Eastern Capital," to distinguish it from the old imperialcapital at Kyoto, the "Western Capital."

SHIMIZU - A mesmerizing landscape, a revered culturalhistory, and Japan's most sacred volcano are just a few of themany delights beckoning you to come and explore thisancient city. While Shimizu may have the reputation as beingbustling and modern, its cultural and spiritual side is ondisplay in the form of ancient and enthralling shrines. Ofcourse, it may be the sacred and snow-capped Mount Fujithat garners the most attention. Towering over the region atapproximately 12,388 feet above sea level, the active volcano, designated a "place and source of artistic inspiration" byUNESCO is just one of the many unforgettable adventuresShimizu inspires.

OSAKA - For centuries, Osaka was Japan's cultural andcommercial gateway to Asia - the point of entry both for tradegoods and, most importantly, cultural influences that shapedJapanese society. From tea to Zen, from art to science andphilosophy, Osaka was Japan's contact with the great EastAsian cultures that flourished in China and Korea. The cityreached its zenith in the late 16th century, when the greatfeudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi made Osaka his capital.Toyotomi was master of Japan, and an immense administra-tive and commercial center rapidly developed around OsakaCastle. After Toyotomi's death, the nation's seat of powershifted from Osaka to a sleepy little fishing village called Edo -modern Tokyo. While overshadowed by Tokyo, Osaka remainsJapan's second largest city and a vital commercial center. Modern Osaka is home to monuments from Japan's pastincluding Toyotomi's immense castle and the SumiyoshiShrine. The city is also your gateway to Kyoto, Japan's ancientimperial capital and the nation's cultural and spiritual center.

BUSAN - The second largest city in South Korea, Busan is yourgateway to a fascinating land whose culture is a uniqueamalgam of old and new. Modern high-rise towers dwarfancient Buddhist temples. The city's bustling business districtoffers a stark contrast to the serene grounds of YongdusanPark. In short, Busan is a microcosm of South Korea, a nationwhose startling economic success often obscures one ofAsia's most sophisticated and venerable cultures. Busan wasthe scene of bitter fighting during the Korean War. The UnitedNations Memorial Cemetery marks the final resting place forthe troops from 16 nations who gave their lives during theconflict.

SAKAMINATO - Wedged between sea, sky and mountains, this small fishing port has been esteemed for centuries for itssuperb seafood. Here, the Sea of Japan yields up both craband hon-maguro, the prized Bluefin tuna esteemed bygourmets around the world. Sakaiminato is also your gatewayto a very ancient region of Honshu. West of the city liesIzumo-taisha, one of the oldest and holiest shrines in Shinto. This area is dotted with burial mounds from Japan's BronzeAge. The town of Matsue boasts the celebrated "Black Castle,"a six-story, black-walled castle that home to a clan of the

mighty Tokugawa dynasty that ruled Japan for over 250 years. And to the east rises the great snow-capped summit of Mt.Daisen, considered one of the four most scenic mountains inall Japan. Also a common sight ashore are the Yokai - approx-imately 100 bronze statues of supernatural characters asimagined by famed manga comic author Shigeru Mizuki, whowas born in Sakaiminato. The Yokai have become synony-mous with the town and delight visitors at every turn.

HAKATATE - It took Commodore Perry and Americangunboat diplomacy to open Japan to the outside world aftertwo centuries of self-imposed isolation. In 1859, the port ofHakodate became the first Japanese city fully opened toWesterners under the Treaty of Amity and Commerce.Foreigners soon flocked to Hakodate, and today visitorswandering the cobblestone streets of the city's MotomachiDistrict can view their Western-style frame houses. Hakodate, once a fishing port famed for its high quality fish and shellfish, quickly became Hokkaido's largest city and one of Japan'smost important ports. The Great Hakodate Fire of 1934 dealtthe city a near fatal blow - a blow from which Hakodate wasslow to recover. Today the city is Hokkaido's third largest -surpassed by Sapporo and Asahikawa - but retains its fore-most position as the finest Japanese producer of sushi's rawproduct: the high quality seafood caught in Hokkaido's coldwaters. It may not compare to Tokyo's Tsukiji's Fish Market, but at Hakodate's four-block-long Morning Market, vendorsoffer a stunning array of fresh fish and shellfish prized for sushiincluding salmon roe, sea urchin, scallops and crab.Restaurants and food stands prepare a wide arrange of dishesincluding domburi topped with fresh seafood.

MURORAN - Travelers familiar with Honshu and Kyushu willfind the island of Hokkaido a welcome contrast. Relativelyunspoiled, Hokkaido offers dramatic landscapes ranging fromdense forests and hot springs to active volcanoes and serenelakes nestled in calderas. To travelers familiar with thethronged streets of Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo, Hokkaidopresents a soothing change of pace. Sapporo was a reflectionof the "new" Japan of the Meiji Restoration. The city receivedinternational attention when it hosted the 1972 WinterOlympic Games.
