EXPLORING SELF-CARRIAGE WHAT IS IT REALLY? Deborah Bowerman-Davies Presented by Equine Self Expression & The School of Connected Riding May 18 - 20, 2018 ~ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm At Victory Stables, 12014 Mount Vernon Road, Vernon Hill, VA 24597 $475.00 (Full participation with horse, including workbook & facility fees) Non-Riders are welcome to participate in Day 1 and Day 2 - $300.OO plus workbook Auditors for riding day - $35.00 Self-carriage implies a horse has the ability to carry himself in balance, no matter what discipline or movements are being executed. In this clinic beginner riders through advanced will benefit from deepening their understanding of correct movement to enhance relaxation, ease within each gait and confidence and safety of horse and rider Friday and Saturday Format Sunday, Lesson Day Format • Morning Lecture – Exploring the components of self carriage • Afternoon - Groundwork with a painted horse to identify muscles and correct function • What is self-carriage? Developing the eye for self carriage components in the horse • Riding and application of self carriage skills as learned on day 1 and 2 • Take home exercises for riders • Where too from here? • Maximum of 12 riding participants The word, self-carriage, is not foreign to any rider, yet it is often misunderstood in terms of how it is executed. Balance, fluidity, throughness, harmony, impulsion & straightness, are all definitions of self-carriage, but the “how to” accomplish it, beyond the format of training, is often overlooked. During this clinic we will look at the cycle of movement that ultimately can express as self-carriage. Alifelonghorse-loverandequestrian,DeborahBowerman-DavieswasborninEngland.ShecompetedontheJunior3-DayEventteamandwentontostudyunderMarieStokesFBHStobecomeaBritishHorseSocietytrainedinstructor.UponcomingtotheUnitedStates,DebbieworkedforOlympicshowjumper,NormanDelloJoio.SheisacertifiedQuantumEnergeticsPractitioner,hascompletedequineosteopathicschool,receivedanhonoraryPh.D.forherworkinthefieldofenergymedicineandisaSeniorInstructorforPeggyCummingsandConnectedRidingTM.ShehasalsostudiedwithLucindaGreen,FrancoiseMathySr.,Dr.ReinerKlimke,BuckBrannamanandKarenandDavidO’Conner,tonameafew.DebbieisanindependentprofessorforWisdomUniversity.

Forovertwentyyears,Debbiecompetedin3-DayEventingandDressagethroughoutEuropeandAmerica.Whilecontinuingtocompeteinternationally,sheopenedherowntrainingfacility

whereshetrainedjuniorriders,rehabilitatedracehorsesanddevelopedherowntherapeuticridingprogram.Herlifelongloveforhorsesdrovehertounderstandeverythingshecouldaboutthem:howtheirbodiesworked,thenatureoftheiremotionalandspirituallives,andhowtheirmindswork.Disgustedbytheharshcramandjammethodsthatdominatedtheequestrianlandscape,Debbie’squestforamorenaturalwaytorideledhertoPeggyCummings,whosecompression-lessridingtechniquesprovedarevelation.Shefoundherselfcompelledtoexplorethespiritualdimensionaswell,andfoundthatbysodoingshecouldlearnfarmorethanasamereobserver.Shebegantostudythesociallifeandinstinctivebehaviorofwildhorsesintheirnaturalhabitat—whichprovedtobeanexplorationasmuchspiritualasscientific.Debbiealwaysknewthehorsesweretherealteachersandshethepupil,nowshewasconvinced.Shealsoconfirmedtherealizationthatanunderstandingofallaspectsofthehorsewasessentialforbuildingthatrelationshipofmutualtrustwhichenableshorseandridertoreachtheirfullpotential.

In2000,DebbielaunchedEquineSelf-ExpressionTM,whichoffersawiderangeofprogramsincludingaseriesofworkshopson“TheEquineNervousSysteminRelationtoBiomechanicsandPerformance,”2to5-dayridingclinicsforridersinterestedinlearningthe“wholehorseapproach”toridingandcompetition,andtrainingprogramsofferinginternshipstostudyherequinebodyworkmodality,TheJigsawEffectTM.DebbiealsoofferstheHealing,GrowthandLearningTMseries,whichcombinesself-discoverywithimmersionintheunspokenlanguageofequusinordertobuilddeeperemotionalandspiritualbondsbetweenhorseandrider.Thesetrainingshaveproventobelifechanging,withparticularimpactforindividualsdealingwithaddiction,behaviorallychallengedchildrenandfamiliesdealingwithautism.ThisprogramalsoprovidestrainingfortherapistsinthefieldofEquinePsychotherapy.
