Paul F. Diehl

Associate Provost and the Ashbel Smith Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas-Dallas

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Atlanta for the 57th Annual Convention of the International Studies Association (ISA), the premier organization of its kind. Our membership has grown dramatically in numbers and geographic scope the last two decades, such that ISA now has 6756 members in 122 countries.

The Convention theme, “Exploring Peace,” is designed to focus attention on an important, yet under-studied, topic in international studies. Traditional international studies have put a premium on war, militarized conflict, and other violence as primary phenomena for investigation. In contrast, “peace” is often defined as the absence of militarized and violent conflict, an afterthought or residual category without a distinct theoretical explanation. Yet, such a characterization lumps many disparate kinds of events and relationships together. The focus on mitigating conflict and violence has led scholars to downplay or ignore other values such as human rights, justice, and equity that are part of many conceptions of peace. In addition, such a concentration leads away from interactions that increasingly characterize international affairs, including trade cooperation, integration, and peacebuilding.

At the 2016 convention, papers, roundtables, and other events focus on all aspects of peace along conceptual, theoretical, and empirical lines. Peace is explored within the different subject matters, orientations, and methodologies that constitute the many regions, sections, and caucuses of the ISA. The program, developed through the outstanding leadership of Co-chairs Amanda Murdie and Cooper Drury, includes 271 theme panels that directly address peace in these multifaceted ways. In total, this year’s convention has 1280 panels and roundtables with 5649 participants (drawn from submissions that exceeded 7600 potential participants). For a successful convention, it takes many dedicated individuals among the ISA staff and we owe a great debt of gratitude to Mark Boyer, Melissa Ballard, Kerry Crawford, Liz Fausett-Fuhrman, Jennifer Fontanella, Giulianna Franchetti, Andrea Gerlak, Alexandra Lewis, Donalyn Maneggia, Will Percival, Ivan Pozdnyakov, Lembe Tiky, and Jeanne White.

The Atlanta convention comes on the heels of a number of important changes for ISA. The transition of headquarters from the Arizona team led by Tom Volgy to the Connecticut team headed by Mark Boyer is now complete. We owe Tom and his team heartfelt gratitude for two decades of superb service and dedication, and I fully expect that Mark and his group will meet the high standard set by their predecessors. The year 2016 also marks the transfer of six ISA journals to a new publisher, Oxford University Press, as well as the inaugural issue of ISA’s seventh and newest journal, Journal of Global Security Studies.

I am pleased to invite you to the ISA Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony on Thursday at 12:30 pm, where I will report on the state of the ISA, introduce the next elected ISA leadership, and present our most visible awards. You are also cordially invited to the Presidential Address that evening by incoming President, T.V. Paul, whose talk will be followed by a reception.

Welcome from the ISA President

Dear Colleagues,

Warm greetings! We are honored to welcome you to the 57th Annual Convention of the International Studies Association. This year’s theme, “Exploring Peace,” encourages all of us to think broadly about what we study and the ways in which our scholarship can inform the creation of peace around us. To fulfill this theme, we need to call upon all of the diverse approaches, methods, and experiences that are represented in the ISA membership.

The program includes a number of theme-related panels and roundtables that we hope you attend. These events help us define peace as more than simply a lack of conflict and represent the state-of-the-art research on how such peace can be fostered. The panels and roundtables highlight the diversity of scholars and scholarship that all touches on the topic of peace.

The intellectual breadth and depth of this year’s program is the result of a tremendous amount of work by the section program chairs. Their work in crafting superb panels and roundtables has been an ongoing process during the full year since the last ISA Convention. We would like to thank them for their tremendous work: Marcelo M. Valenca (ALIAS), George J. Andreopoulos and Andrei V. Korobkov (CISS), Marcus Holmes and Kiron Skinner (DPLST), Cornelia Navari (ENGSS), Fariborz Zelli (ESS), Ozgur Ozdamar (ENMISA), Natalie Florea Hudson and Annica Kronsell (FTGS), Dursun Peksen (FPA), Heloise Weber (GDS), Owain Williams (GHS), Nanette Svenson (GSCIS), Benjamin de Carvalho (HIST), Dave Benjamin and Monica Carreto Serrano (HRS), William Lahneman and Julian Richards (ISS), Craig Hayden (ICOMM), Laura Brunell (IEDUC), Amy Eckert and Brent Steele (IETHICS), Krista Wiegand (ILAW), Ruben Zaiotti (IO), Andre Broome (IPE), Dirk Nabers (IPS), Charles Eugene Gholz (ISSS), Derrick Cogburn, Andrea Gerlak and Natalie Florea Hudson (JSS), Jack Amoureux (LGBTQA), Stephen Saideman (OMC), Esra Cuhadar (PEACE), Patrick James (PDG), Mikhail Molchanov (POSTCOMM), Nukhet Sandal (REL), Madeline Carr and David Hornsby (STAIR), Hanne Fjelde (SSIP), Daniel J. Levine (THEORY), and Galia Golan (WCIS).

Our task as program chairs was a joy thanks to the assistance of the ISA staff, especially Jennifer Fontanella, Liz Fausett-Fuhrman, Andrea Gerlak, Dana Larsen, and Jeanne White. We are grateful for the assistance of two executive directors, Tom Volgy and Mark Boyer. We also received invaluable help throughout the process from the ISA President, Paul F. Diehl.

Our university, the University of Missouri, has been a tremendous source of support during this process. We would like to thank the College of Arts and Sciences and the Truman School of Public Affairs for their support. Our colleagues in the Department of Political Science at the University of Missouri have also been incredibly understanding and supportive.

Finally, this program would not have been possible without the work of Tom Guarrieri, our PhD student and program assistant. Tom’s attention to detail and tireless efforts are evident in every aspect of this program. We look forward to seeing you in Atlanta and are excited to learn about your work.

Cheers,Dr. Amanda Murdie & Dr. Cooper Drury

FD32: External Influences on Democratization: Engaging Academics and Practitioners A discussion between academics and practitioners examining how outside influences affect democratization and democratic backsliding

Interested in proposing an Innovative Panel at ISA 2017?The deadline for Innovative Panel proposals for the ISA 2017 Annual Convention is May 15, 2016.

Working Groups Working Groups meet both before and during the conference and provide a forum for scholars to have in-depth discussions on substantive areas that extend across the complex boundaries of international studies. Participation is by application. The following are this year’s ISA Working Groups:

PWG01: Religion and Peace: Possibilities, Challenges and ProspectsSponsored by the Religion and International Relations Section and the Peace Studies Section

The theme of the ISA’s 57th convention is “Exploring Peace”. What are its definitions, what are the threats to peace and how can policy circles and academic world cooperate to make peace happen? This working group will look at how religion affects those questions and dynamics. Does religion contribute to peace and conflict? How and when? What is the state of literature when it comes to religion and peace international relations? How about policy making? Do policymakers generate novel approaches to peace by tapping into religious sources and go beyond standard liberal/secular approaches? This working group will bring scholars of peace studies and religion in international studies to explore these critical questions from interdisciplinary and multi-method perspectives.

PWG02: Strategic Foresight & IR for the 21st CenturySponsored by the International Security Studies Section

This Working Group will consist of short papers and roundtable discussions looking at the issue of cutting edge methodological debates (to the fore, the tension between qualitative and quantitative modelling, and the role of big data), the study of foresight in IR and best practice teaching, and long-term views on foreign policy topics critical for the next President of the United States to engage with (e.g. notably, proliferation, emerging technolo-gies, the crisis in the Middle East, climate justice and sustainability, and global public health).

Interested in putting together a Working Group at ISA 2017? The deadline for Working Group proposals for the ISA 2017 Annual Convention is June 15, 2016.

Research and Workshop Grants

ISA’s Research & Workshop Grant Program was created in 1992 to support and advance workshops for its members. Workshops bring together research teams to collaborate and discuss their work, and share it with the broader ISA community.

The success of the program led to its substantial expansion and restructuring in 2007 by the Governing Council, more than doubling the amount of funds available. Since its inception thousands of scholars have participated in workshops.

Two Types of research workshop grants Venture Research GrantsProvide support to innovative and pioneering research. These grants allow for the pursuit of potentially transformative research areas, or to engage in preliminary work on untested or novel areas of research. Venture research grants are worth up to $25,000.

Catalytic Research GrantsProvide support to projects that apply new expertise or new approaches to established research topics, and as a result, are likely to catalyze rapid and innovative advances in that area. Catalytic research grants are worth up to $10,000.

Grants Eligibility and Logistics

You are eligible: as a member of ISA, you can organize and participate in a workshop. Research and Workshop Grants are a benefit of ISA membership. Accordingly, all workshop organizers

and participants must be members of ISA within two weeks of grant award date.

Connecting scholars: workshops are a great opportunity to advance projects, and work collaboratively with scholars from various regions, backgrounds and ranks.

Call for proposals will be sent out in April 2016. The Research and Workshop Committee members then evaluate each proposal along lines of intellectual merit, participant qualifications, expected output, and budgetary considerations.

Workshops may be held in conjunction with the ISA Annual Convention.

Workshops may be held at an alternate time or location, almost anywhere in the world.

Applying for a Research Workshop Grant

The deadline for research and workshop grant proposals for 2017 is July 31, 2016.

Welcome From Atlanta

March 16, 2016

ISA Convention Attendees,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Atlanta for ISA’s 57th Annual Convention. On behalf of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau and the entire hospitality community, we hope that you have a wonderful experience in our city.

Atlanta is the epicenter of the South, offering an accessible destination for visitors. Eighty percent of the U.S. population is within a two-hour flight of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal provides access to more than 75 international destinations in 50 countries. Once you’re in Atlanta, navigating the city is a breeze. From the airport, hop on a MARTA train for a 15-minute ride to Atlanta’s convention corridor.

A visitor’s journey begins in Centennial Olympic Park, the perfect starting point for exploring Atlanta and located just steps away from your meeting. The park is surrounded by world-class attractions including Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola and two brand new additions: Center for Civil and Human Rights and College Football Hall of Fame & Chick-fil-A Fan Experience. The new Atlanta Streetcar connects our compact convention and tourism district to hotels, historic attractions and nearly 300 dining options downtown.

Midtown’s arts district is just a few stops away on MARTA, or just a quick drive up the famous Peachtree Street, while a short cab ride to Buckhead brings you to the finest shopping in the Southeast. With so much to see and do in Atlanta, there’s something for everyone.

Once again, we extend a warm welcome to ISA’s 57th Annual Convention and hope you have an enjoyable stay in Atlanta.

Sincerely,

William C. PatePresident and CEOAtlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau
