Composite restorative materials are often notoriously difficult to place and their sticky nature means they frequently adhere to the instrument rather than the prepared tooth, especially if the instrument has become scratched. Nova, the specialist in dental instruments, has the solution – a new range of instruments specifically designed for use with composite materials.

The tips of Nova’s composite instruments feature a special Titanium Nitride coating. This creates an ultra-smooth surface that is highly resistant to sticking and scratching, helping ensure composite materials can be quickly placed and carved.

Silver is a natural antimicrobial

Silver has been used for thousands of years to prevent the growth of bacteria.

The Phoenicians prevented water and wine from spoiling by keeping them in silver vessels and in ancient Greece Hippocrates, often called the Father of Medicine, wrote that silver had both healing and anti – disease properties.

In medieval times, the wealthy would feed their children using a silver as opposed to a wooden spoon for protection from harmful bacteria

and it’s believed this gave rise to the phrase “born with a silver spoon in their mouth”. It was also believed that using silver cutlery would provide protection against the plague.

American pioneers travelling west kept their water and milk fresher for longer by putting a silver coin in the storage barrels.

Up until the introduction of antibiotics in 1938, colloidal silver was used by physicians as a mainstream antibiotic treatment and NASA even used it to purify water on the space shuttle.

With our in – depth experience of antimicrobial additive technology, we make it easy for you to launch an antibacterial product.

Biomaster has masterbatch formulations and compounds for every type of polymer and every manufacturing process and it doesn’t affect the physical properties of the plastic in any way.

We can supply masterbatch samples free – of - charge for you to trial and arrange testing at an independent laboratory for efficacy to ISO standards.

Biomaster can be added to textile or fabrics at any stage of production from fibre to finishing and from aftercare to laundry treatments to provide lasting antimicrobial and odour protection.

Treated items don’t have to be washed as often, saving water. They can also be washed at a lower temperature saving energy, causing less damage to the fabric and increasing durability whilst retaining the antimicrobial benefit associated with much hotter wash cycles.

By its very nature, paper is inherently difficult to clean making it a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and a known source of cross contamination.

The Biomaster paper grade additive is unique and can be applied either during manufacture or by post treatment to provide effective, lasting antimicrobial protection, reduce the risk of cross contamination and prevent bacterial built – up in storage.

Washer/Disinfector Cleaning

1 Your washer/disinfector must be CE marked or validated.

2 Use only low foaming, non-ionising cleaning agents and detergent and always follow the instructions for use.

3 Open any joints or hinges to to enable full draining.

4 Ensure heavy instruments are placed at the bottom of the basket.

5 Place any concave surfaces face down.

6 Use purpose-designed attachments to flush inside reamers, lumens and cannulas.

7 High alkaline solutions (pH>10) may damage some materials (such as aluminium).

8 Use soft, high purity water for final rinsing.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

1 Do not overload/overcrowd cleaner with instruments.

2 Clean for no longer than 10 mins.

3 Colour-etched probes or black composite instruments should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.

Manual Cleaning (NOTE: this is NOT a disinfection process)

1 Manual cleaning is recommended if you do not have access to an automatic washer/disinfectant.

2 In a sink used only for instrument cleaning, clean surfaces with an autoclavable brush and a CE marked cleaning solution to remove all debris.

3 Always brush away from the body and avoid splashing.

4 Pay close attention to serrations, hinges, ratchets, lumens and cannulas.

5 Rinse the instrument with soft high purity water and carefully dry by hand or in a drying cabinet.

Thermal Disinfection

1 Alkaline corrosive detergents should never be used.

2 Use only a CE marked machine and carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cold Disinfection

1 Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) should not be used.

2 Follow all manufacturer’s instructions and warnings for de-contaminates, disinfectants and cleaning agents.

3 Use only CE marked products.

4 High alkaline solutions (pH>10) may damage some materials (such as aluminium).

Sterilisation with dry heat

1 Do not use dry heat to sterilise silicone handled instruments, hollow handled elevators or plastic mirror handles.

2 Aim for an ideal temperature 160°C, but never exceed 180°C.

3 Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Sterilisation in an autoclave

1 Instruments should be dry before sterilisation.

2 Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and never exceed the stated load.

3 Autoclave at 134-137°C for a minimum of 3 minutes.

General

1 Always repeat the decontamination process if any debris is still visible.

2 Damaged and worn-out instruments should be replaced.

3 Store instruments in a clean, well ventilated and covered condition.
