ITINERARY

DAY 1 | MARCH 25 | TORONTO – KUNMING (VIA HONG KONG) Board your overnight flight to Kunming, China, the starting point for your 20-day adventure.

DAY 2 | MARCH 26 | KUNMING (D) Welcome to Kunming, the largest city in China’s Yunnan province. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. Today is at leisure to relax, explore the area around the hotel, and adjust to your new surroundings. Enjoy a welcome dinner with the group at the hotel.

DAY 3 | MARCH 27 | KUNMING (B, L) We venture a short distance from Kunming to explore Shilin, the spectacular Stone Forest. These ancient limestone formations span a 500 km2 area that was once, approximately 270 million years ago, a shallow sea. Deposits of sandstone and limestone accumulated in the basin and over time, geological shifts and exposure to running water and wind created these iconic pillars. Wander through this dramatic world, including UNESCO World Heritage sites Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village, on a full-day tour, including a lunch at a local restaurant. DAY 4 | MARCH 28 | KUNMING – JINGHONG (B, L, D) Fly to Jinghong in the southernmost region of China. Upon arrival, transfer to the RV Laos Pandaw, our home for the next 14 nights. Enjoy lunch on board and attend a briefing on the city, including a Chinese language lesson.

First founded as Cheli in 1180, Jinghong had a tumultuous past marked by Thai, Burmese, and Chinese occupation. In the afternoon, take a walking tour through the city where you’ll see evidence of these influences in its architecture and hear them in the local dialects.

DAY 5 | MARCH 29 | JINGHONG (B, L, D) Begin with a visit to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, a vast and stunning area with more than 13,000 plant species. Continue to Manting Park, the oldest park in Xishuangbanna, dating back 1300 years. Formerly a Dai imperial garden, the park is captivating in its natural beauty. The statues, pavilions and temples provide insight into the rich culture and heritage of the Dai people. The park’s other name Chunhuan Park, means a place to rest the soul, to rid oneself of earthly worries. Tonight, take in a cultural show at the Maxmumbani Theatre.

DAY 6 | MARCH 30 | SAILING THE MEKONG (B, L, D) Begin our cruise down the magnificent Mekong, one of the world’s largest rivers. Vistas of lush hillsides and dramatic cliffs greet us as we sail to Guan Lei Port, where we pass through immigration. After lunch, go ashore to visit the wooden houses and local temples of a Lue village.

DAY 7 | MARCH 31 | SOB LUOY PROVINCE, LAOS (B, L, D) Visit the village of Ban Done Jai, now home to the Akha people, an indigenous hill tribe.

Explore The Upper Mekong Included meals: B – breakfast, L – lunch, D – dinner

See their traditional houses and visit a Lao Lue temple before an afternoon cruise to Ban Pha Kao, a local village. Here, we’ll take a short hike that provides gorgeous views over the Mekong. Conclude the day with cocktails on the deck of our ship.

DAY 8 | APRIL 1 | BAN DOM MOON, THAI-LAND (B, L, D) Our journey takes us through to the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. We are now in the narrowest and most rapid-moving part of the Mekong. In the morning, travel by tractor to the village of Ban Pok Lok to visit a school and relax at the hot springs. In the afternoon, pass through Thai immigration to the district of Chiang Saen in northern Thailand.

DAY 9 | APRIL 2 | CHIANG SAEN, THAILAND (B, L, D) Begin with a visit to a Thai village. After lunch on board, visit the beautiful buildings of Wat Phra That Pha Ngao Buddhist temple complex and its hilltop pagoda for views of the area and the Mekong. Explore the town of Chiang Saen - no written history of city appears until the 13th century when it was officially founded between 1325-1328. Once the major city of the Lanna Kingdom, it was captured by the Burmese in the 16th century and then later abandoned by Thai King Rama I in 1803 for a hundred years. It was repopulated around 1900, but never grew to its former glory. This history is evident in the traces of old city walls . This evening, enjoy an onboard performance by traditional Thai dancers.

DAY 10 | APRIL 3 | GOLDEN TRIANGLE (B, L, D) Today is dedicated to an in-depth exploration of the Golden Triangle area, historically one of the largest producers of opium. A morning bus ride takes us to the city of Tachileik in eastern Myanmar where we explore the trading market (with all its bootleg wares), Chinese temples, and the Tachileik Shwedagon Pagoda. After lunch, visit the Hall of Opium. Thai organizations have been trying to quell opium production for decades. The Opium Hall, which traces the history of opium from its first use over 5000 years ago to modern times, was built as part of this campaign to warn against the dangers of opium. Following our time in Tachileik, we’ll seek calm at the Golden Triangle’s Buddha statue, and take in the view of the three bordering countries.

DAY 11 | APRIL 4 | CHIANG KHONG, THAILAND/LAOS (B, L, D) Enjoy the morning cruise downstream, with Laos on the left and Thailand on the right, or take part in a cooking demonstration, before arriving at Chiang Khong. A bustling trading village, Chiang Khong connects the borders of Laos and Thailand by its Friendship Bridge. The impact of its geographical situation is evident in its rich diversity of people - local Laotian, Thai and Akha populations observe three separate calendars resulting in a variety of festivals year-round.

DAY 12 | APRIL 5 | PAK THA AND OUDOMXAY DISTRICTS, LAOS (B, L, D) After passing through immigration formalities, our ship heads downstream on the upper Mekong River, continuing to provide ample photo opportunities. After lunch, explore the

traditional village of Ban Pak Sit. Tonight our ship will moor along the jungle shores.

DAY 13 | APRIL 6 | PAKBENG, LAOS (B, L, D) The sights become more dramatic now seeming to match the tone of the voyage itself as the river becomes faster and more difficult to navigate. It is an exciting time to be on board to witness the feat of sailing this river. In the morning, our chefs will present cooking demonstrations of popular Laotian dishes, as we continue towards the small, quiet village of Pakbeng, which lies halfway between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. With not much in the way of nightlife, this rustic town offers the perfect opportunity for a good night’s sleep after en-joying a sunset over the Mekong.

DAY 14 | APRIL 7 | SAILING THE MEKONG (B, L, D) Relax and take in the day’s sights as we sail by lush jungles, dense forests, and villages dotted along the river bank. Stretch your legs on a walk ashore at Ban Huay La village and observe local women as they weave. Your guide will provide an informative presentation on the Laotian language and culture. If water levels are low, we’ll enjoy a cocktail party along the river bank or take a small boat to watch elephants bathing.

DAY 15 | APRIL 8 | PAK OU CAVES, LAOS (B, L, D) Our first stop is the small village of Ban Xang Hai, commonly known as the Whisky Village for its production of Laos’ beloved lao-lao or rice whisky. Continue to the spectacular Pak Ou caves, located in limestone cliffs on the western side of the Mekong. This Buddhist sanctuary is one of Laos’ most respected holy sites – more than 4,000 Buddha icons fill these caves over-looking the river. Arrive at the holy city of Luang Prabang, situated at the confluence of the Mekong and the Nam Khan Rivers. The ancient city of Luang Prabang was the royal capital of Laos until 1975. Its history includes significant Western influence during World War II and you will see this influence and impact as we explore the city on a walking tour. Luang Prabang is renowned for its temples and monasteries and is home to many Laotian monks.

DAY 16 | APRIL 9 | LUANG PRABANG (B, L, D) Of the 58 villages which make up this city, 33 comprise the Town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through its stunning streets of traditional wooden houses and gilded monasteries. Our walk

includes stops at Wat Xieng Muan temple, the gilded Wat Xien Thong temple, and the ornate Wat Mai temple. The afternoon is at leisure before visiting the city’s vibrant night market.

DAY 17 | APRIL 10 | KUANG SI FALLS (B, L, D) An early start at 5:30am to witness the monks’ alms giving morning ceremony. Visit the morning market before breakfast on the ship. Take the morning to relax. After lunch, explore the Kuang Si Butterfly Park, founded in 2014 as a research and conservation area for the many species of Laotian butterflies. Complete the day with a visit to the spectacular Kuang Si Falls where you can enjoy a swim.

DAY 18 | APRIL 11 | LUANG PRABANG – BANGKOK, THAILAND (B, L, D) A morning flight takes you to bustling Bangkok, the “City of Angels”. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. Designated as Thailand’s capital in 1782, Bangkok is the country’s spiritual, cultural, political and educational centre. Tour the historic Grand Palace, the renowned Wat Arun temple, and explore the Chao Phraya River with its vast canal network. Vibrant markets such as Chatuchak Weekend Market, Thailand’s biggest market, are enticing in their array of colourful goods. Unwind from the bustle at one of Bangkok’s many fine spas. Enjoy a group dinner on the fabulous Grand Pearl dinner cruise that takes us past Bangkok’s most iconic sights such as the Temple of Dawn and many famous bridges.

DAY 19 | APRIL 12 | BANGKOK (B, L, D) Our full-day city tour includes visits to three famous temples - Wat Traimit, the Temple of the Golden Buddha; Wat Pho, Temple of the Reclining Buddha; and Wat Phra Kaew, Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Marvel at Wat Traimit’s 700-year old, three-metre tall gold Buddha, weighing 5.5 tons. The Temple of the Reclining Buddha houses its iconic 46-metre long reclining Buddha, and is recognized as the earliest centre for education in Thailand. Visit Wat Phra Kaew, site of the most sacred Buddhist image. After lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy a thrilling boat ride through the klongs of outer Bangkok to get a closer look at the rural lifestyle, then cruise on a converted rice barge on the larger canals and the Chao Phraya River. Celebrate your journey with a farewell dinner at the hotel.

DAY 20 | APRIL 13 | BANGKOK – TORONTO (B) (via Hong Kong) Transfer to the airport for the flight home.
