Egypt is known for its rich heritage, history and important monuments. Many of the monuments
in Egypt are part of the wonders of the world.
Sabilkatkhuda monument is one among the important monuments in Cairo. The architecture and
Islamic culture can been in the building. The building was built in the year 1744 by the architect
Katkhuda. The monument is also known as the treasure of Ottoman architecture.
Sabilkatkhuda monument is situated on Al-MuizzLideenillahStreet. During the reign of Mamluk
and Ottoman, Sabils and kuttabs were everywhere in Cairo. Sabils are basically facilities that
provide fresh water for thirsty people while kuttabs are elementary schools that teach kids. The
architecture during this period is found to be very delicate and Sabils can be found as a piece of
art in the monument.
The SabilKuttab has the maximum visibility in the Street due to its free standing side walls. The
monument has two main parts. The Sabil and kuttab form the southern part of the monument
while the northern part is being used as living areas. The building can be seen to be using the
Mamluk style. The three sides of the monument are open while the fourth is made up of grey and
white stones. Tiles and embedded pillars can be seen at every corner. The entrance of the
monument contains artistic writings and verses from the holy Quran.
The kuttan is composed of five marbled columns that hold the painted roof. The wooden
windows are awesome and have artistic design. These wooden windows are called the
Mashrabeyya and are found to be present in every Islamic Cairo buildings. The doors and
cupboards are made of wood and are wonderfully carved and painted.
The entire building sits on a triangular shaped site. It gives a visual focus. The three sides of the
building are symmetrical and identical. The middle of the structure has a big opening that has a
number of cups which are used by people to drink. The opening has a copper mesh which has
holes that allow a cup to pass by.
The Sabil has three doors. The first door leads to a water storage tank, the second leads to the
Sabil and the third to the stairs that go up to the Kuttab. The Kuttab is located in the second floor.
The Mamluk architecture can be seen is every building with Islamic architecture. The Ottoman
architecture is an elegant design that can be found in all the big domes. The Builder of the Sabil
Katkhuda monument is Abd al Rahman Katkhuda. The building is named after the Mamluk
Amir Prince. He is known for his work and development of the area. Al Azhar University is one
among his important development activities.
