This method can be used to the different type of soils such as clays, sands, silts, soft silts, loose sands, peat and organic soils. Preloading can also be used with stone cloumn, lime column and other means to expedirte the vertical consolidation. A new technique proposed is to use preloading laterallyby means of an expanding pier concept to provide radial

consolidatiion. The expanded pier is constructed by inserting membrane that can be expanded using air, slurry foam, gas or liquid through a hose connected to a compressor. To obtain the objectives of this study, a model of the expending pier will be developed using physical and two numerical models. In the first numerical model, the radial consolidation and the lateral movement of the soil will be analysed based on cavity expansion theory using the ANSYS computer code.The result will be compared with the physical model constructed using an expandable membrane inflated using injected foam through a compressor at different pressures. To ensure that the soil and pier movements can be visually observed and measured, a transparent soil technique will be used. The transparent soil is formulated from silica powder to simulate the soft soil condition and the displacement will be measured using PIV technique and laser for image deflection. The changes in vertical stiffness or shear strength and settlement will be measured using vane shear tests and transducers respectively after each loading sessions .The results will be compared with the numerical analysis using Plaxis. The effect of inflation or expended piers to the radial consolidation will be verified based on the improvement of soil strength and its stiffness. It is expected that from this research, a new concept and approach of soil soil improvement can be adopted as an alternative to vertical preloading which requires tons of imported materials and involves trafiic on site.The new approach will established the procedures and design for application purposes.

Detailed proposal of research project: Cadangan maklumat penyelidikan secara terperinci:

(a) Research background including Hypothesis /Research Questions and Literature Reviews. Keterangan latar belakang penyelidikan termasuk kenyataan hipotesis / persoalan penyelidikan dan kajian literatur.

The civil engineering community is familiar with different techniques to improve soft soils as like as vertical drainage, compaction grouting, installing auger cast piles, compact rammed aggregate piers, tapered displacement piles, pressure-injected piles, stone column, helical piers and drilled piles. A novel approach proposed is to achieve soft soil ground improvement by means of applying radial compression and using preload piers. Radially preloading or expanding piers can be performed as pre-treatment before a structure or embankment is built. The main idea behind the preload piers is densification in the radial direction by controlled displacement and thus consolidation of the soil. In this method, after the member is positioned in the ground, through a hose it can be expanded by air, slurry, sand, foam, gas, liquid, solid substance, composition or combination as a desired shape. Expansion of the member increases the density of the surrounding soil of the pier and consequently increases the stiffness soil and decreases the vertical settlement. Until now, the main focus has been on the effects of the adjacent soil on the load capacity of a pile such as improved skin friction, but not on the stiffness improvement of the soils in a perimeter adjacent to piles. On the other hand, the studies of the preloading effects on the soil stiffness have focused on the soils that are preloaded in the vertical direction (Moseley, 1993). In fact, there is no research that provides a direct basis to predict vertical stiffness changes in soil in response to preloading in the radial direction under the essentially constant vertical stress.

Moreover, it is not known how much the vertical stiffness improvement can be expected due to the stress

changes induced by a radially expanding pier. Handy (2001) has described how preloading can also be achieved by imposition of lateral loading in soft ground with an expected improvement in stiffness. In addition, Yu (2000) has shown that the soil is displaced predominately outwards in the radial movement of the soil due to pile driving similar to the expansion of a cylindrical cavity.

Randolph et al (1979) modeled the pile driving using the undrained expansion of a cylindrical cavity. The excess

pore water pressure generated in this process has subsequently been assumed to dissipate by means of outward radial flow of pore water.In 2000, Wie studied the radial consolidation effects on the shear modulus and the strength of the soil based on the cavity expansion theory. Hung( 2006) and Ambily ( 2007) determined the shear srength in the soft soils using the numerical modelling and the laboratory tests, however, these studies had been only done on the horizontally radial consolidation.

The soil settlement in the compaction grouting piles and the rammed aggregate piers have been studied by Richard(2001) and Jian et. al ( 2009), respectively.Christopher et. al (2002) porposed a sreies of the reaseraches on the stiffness and the compressibility of the soft clay by the full-scale and the laboratory test. In addition, the radial consolidation due to the pile driving in soft clay has been studied by Jun et. al (2010), Haiying et. al (2010) and Jason (2005). The soil displacements due to pile driving using transparent soil and PIV method has been carried out by Ni et. al (2010).Biringen (2006) has studied soil stiffness changes due to preloaded piers using the triaxial tests and the numerical modelling. Moreover, the zone of influence during the installation of the preload piers has been studied by Biringen (2009).

preloading has the advantage of reducing the quantity of materials to be transported to site thus reduces traffic and possibility cost of construction.

(c) Methodology Kaedah penyelidikan

1. Description of Methodology Reasearch methodolgy will be done based on follow steps: 1- Preliminary tests to establish engineering properties of soft soil such as shear strength and liquid limit to be used in numerical modelling and for simulation for transparent soil 2-Using Ansys code to investigate of mechanism of lateral movement of surrounding soil due to radial preloading,and getting relationship between horizantal consolidation and vertical stiffness based on expansion cavity theory 3- Fabricate and conduct physical modelling of expanding piers in transparent soil and and measurement of soil deformation by PIV method and laser technique . Expansion of membrane will be conducted at different pressurres fron 100kpa to 500kpa. Lateral movement using cavity expansion theory from numerical analysis is compared to the data from modelling. 4-Using Plaxis code to verify of vertical stiffnes, shear strength and settlement changes due to radial consolidation and varified with the measurement from physical modelling 5-Varify the procedures and design for soil stabilisation with expending piers in terms of parameters such as optimum applied pressure, calibration of membrane, pore water pressure develop and strength increase.
