The strapping chestnut colt, by Distorted Humor out of Tom's Cat (Storm Cat), topped the sale with a bid of $1.5 million. Consigned by Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent, he was purchased by WinStar Farm. What made the April foal worth seven figures? "First of all, we support our stallions, and we feel Dis- torted Humor is a great sire," said WinStar's Mark Maronde. "We also thought he was the best two-year-old we've seen in the sales this year. We thought he looked a lot like Flower Alley, and you don't get an opportunity to buy horses like that too often. He stood like a statue in the ring--he has a lot of substance and a lot of presence. There wasn't anything about him we didn't like. It was an obvious choice to jump in and buy him." While Team WinStar was eager to see the colt carry their colors, they weren't convinced they could get him. "We thought he might bring $2-$2.5 million," Maronde said. Was he prepared to go that high? "Hell, no!" he said with a laugh. "We saw a lot of the people with the big money sticking around, and we assumed it was for this horse. If the two big guys hook up, there is no telling how high they will go. We knew we were going to have to stretch, but I don't know how much further we were going. I am tickled to death that we were able to get him." The colt, named Cowtown Cat, will go to High Pointe training center in Louisville. "That's where we send all our two-year-olds," Maronde said. "We'll get him up to a half mile and then Elliott Walden will make a decision as to who will train him. Todd Pletcher is a likely candidate, but we use quite a few trainers and that's for Elliott to decide." From RNA to A Number One... Gulf Coast Farms Bloodstock LP, the operation run byJerry Bailey and Lance Robinson, bred the sales topperand sent him to the Keeneland September Sale, butbought him back for $135,000. They knew they'dmade the right choice when the colt worked an eighth

in :10 1/5 at the first preview. "Iknew he would sell well, but I didn'tknow if he would bring a million or amillion and a half or two million,"Bailey said. "We seemed to have theright parties on him and, as DougCauthen shared after the sale,WinStar has been looking for theright Distorted Humor and they de-cided this was the one." Gulf Coastalso bred the other million-dollarBarretts baby, the $1.2 million Ex-ploit colt, but let him go for$100,000 as an OBSAUG yearling.

Were there any regrets on that sale? "None at all,"Bailey said. "We have a 100 mares--we aren't going tosell all the babies as two-year-olds. And it's great whenpeople do well with the yearlings they buy from us."

The Numbers Game... Overall, numbers were down a bit from 2005. Aver-age dipped 5.4 percent, from $163,188 to $154,419,while the median took a 15.8-percent hit, from$95,000 to $80,000. On the positive side, RNAs werealso down. Last year, 39.3 percent of the juvenilesfailed to sell, compared to 33.1 percent this term. Perusual for a two-year-old sale, the mid- to upper levels ofthe market were Barretts’s bread and butter, but saleofficials pointed out that quite a few runners found newhomes selling shy of the six-figure mark. "I think thehorses were very well-valued,” said Barretts PresidentJerry McMahon. “There was real strength in the horsesthat sold for $300,000 and up, and we got a lot ofhorses sold below $100,000. The depth was there forthe good horses, and that's really all you can ask of asale. Overall, I am happy with the results."

A Word About BRIS Speed Ratings...BRIS Speed Ratings accurately represent how fast ahorse has run. Like other popular speed ratings, BRISSpeed Ratings are based on the final time of the raceand, most importantly, include an accurate "trackvariant" (which measures the speed of a racetrack ona specific day.) Unlike other speed indicators, thetrack variant is derived by an objective, computer-precise method rather than the subjective opinion ofone handicapper. The highest BRIS Speed Ratings(110 and up) will usually only be achieved by the best

That Old Barretts Magic... Murray Smith works magic at the Barretts MarchSale. Last year, Smith sent a colt by Songandaprayerthrough the ring and saw him headline the sale at $1.9million. She didn’t quite get the topper yesterday, butcame close when a striking son of Exploit she con-

signed fetched $1.2 million. The juvenile was purchasedby Zayat Stables. Smithknew she was onto some-thing special the minute shelaid eyes on a nearly blackyearling at OBS August lastyear. "I did a double-takewhen I saw him in the walk-ing ring at OBS August--Iloved him," said the con-signor, who went to$100,000 to take him home.

"He was absolutely exceptional." The first foal out ofstakes-placed Carson Jen (Carson City), the Ken-tucky-bred lived up to expectations. "He trained bril-liantly, he worked brilliantly, he vetted great," Smithsaid. "He's just the kind of two-year-old you love tohave. He did everything perfectly--he jumped throughevery hoop all year long." Can he follow in thehoofsteps of last year's star? The 2005 sales topper, named What a Song, was an undefeated graded-stakeswinner for trainer Bob Baffert, but suffered a fatal injuryduring a morning workout. Baffert is the leading candi-date to train hip 47, and that's just the way Smithhoped things would play out. "The day I bought him, Icalled Bob and told him I'd just bought the spittingimage of What a Song," she recalled. "Bob and I aregood friends, we make a good team, and I wanted himto have this colt. Maybe this colt can pick up whereWhat a Song left off." Zayat Stables' associate SobhySonbol wouldn't commit to sending hip 47 to Baffert, but indicated that was the most likely route thetwo-year-old would take.

The Right Call... Sobhy Sonbol was on the phone with Egyptian brew-ery magnate Ahmed Zayat as the bidding sped past

$500,000 for hip 47. "He callsthe shots," said Sonbol. Werethere any second thoughts as theprice headed toward the$1-million mark? "He never hesi-tated," Sonbol said. "This is abeautiful horse, the most beauti-ful in the sale. I think he was agood value." Zayat, a force at theyearling auctions last year, cur-rently has 80 horses in trainingaround the country. He was alsoactive at the Keeneland JanuarySale, building a broodmare band."We are going to get big," Sonbolsaid. "We are going to be all over

the place, wait and see. Hopefully, we will contribute alot to the industry." Zayat has horses in training withBill Mott, Rick Dutrow Jr. and Tom Amoss in the U.S.,and with John Gosden, Jeremy Noseda and MichaelBell in Europe. He has now added Bob Baffert to thestable. "We want to have a diverse program," Sonbolsaid. "We are getting involved full force, and we arehoping for a big year."

Zayat Goes to $700,000 for Distorted Humor Filly... Hip 41 attracted a lot of attention when she drilled aneighth in a co-fastest :10 flat at the Mar. 5 preview, and she was one of the stars of the show yesterday aswell. The chestnut daughter of Distorted Humor, con-signed by Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent, was pur-chased by Zayat Stables for $700,000. It was thefirst-ever Barretts purchase for Ahmed Zayat, whodidn’t take long to buy his second, nabbing the sale’ssecond-highest priced horse, the $1.2-million Exploit, just six hips later. "She's a gorgeous filly, she's fastand she has a good pedigree," Zayat associate SobhySonbol said of hip 41. "She has it all. She's flawless."While Sonbol emphasized that Zayat is the boss, hewas also quick to credit Dr. Steven Allday for his adviceon the Barretts purchases. "He is the vet for the stable, and he is the best vet in America," Sonbol said. Hip 41,named Undercover Angel, will be among the firsthorses that Zayat will send to Bob Baffert. A half tostakes-placed Purgatory, she was bred by Bailey andLance Robinson's Gulf Coast Farms Bloodstock LP.

Richter Scale Colt Brings Early Tremors... It didn't take long to get the party started at BarrettsMarch. Hip 17, a colt by Richter Scale from the B.C.3.Thoroughbreds consignment that brought Brother Derek

to the Hinds Pavilion lastyear, was hammereddown for $825,000 totrainer John Sadler. Thebay had dashed off aquarter in :20 4/5 at thefirst under-tack show, becoming just the fifthBarretts graduate tobreak the :21 barrier. Thefirst four all went on thegraded-stakes success, including Grade I winner

Officer and 2006 Kentucky Derby favorite BrotherDerek. Named Call Zoll, hip 17 has the bloodlines tomake the grade as well; his full sister, Quite a Ruckus, captured the My Dear S. at Woodbine, and his seconddam was Canadian champion Ada Prospect (New Pros-pect). "Like last year, you can get a top colt at thissale," said Sadler. "He is a really good-looking individualand he vets well. He looks like a three-year-old--he's bigand strong and mature." Did he expect to have tostretch the check book as far as he did? "We thoughthe'd bring around $600,000, so we had to pay a littlebit of a premium," Sadler said. "We were right at ourlimit." Looking ahead, the California horseman added, "Iwill take him to Santa Anita and evaluate him for twoor three weeks and decide what to do with him fromthere." Sadler would only say that he was buying for"undisclosed clients," but reports say the new ownersare CRK Stable.

Queen of the Ring... By Storm Cat out of MGSW Parade Queen (A.P.Indy), hip 127 doesn't have to prove herself on theracetrack to be well worth the $500,000 final bid shecommanded at Barretts yesterday. But agent BrunoDeBerdt, who signed the ticket on the attractive bay, isconfident she is more than just a pretty pedigree. "Shehas the most beautiful way of going," DeBerdt said. "Iclocked her in :10 flat and :21 1/5, and she was wellwithin herself. She is worth the money as a broodmareprospect, but I don't think she is going to have to relyon her residual value." The agent, buying for the part-nership of James Vreeland, Tom Stull and John Sikura, was satisfied with the price tag for the filly. "I thoughtshe might go for a tick higher, but I was hoping wecould get her for what we did," he said. "We werepretty much on the ropes." Consignor Becky Thomas ofSequel Bloodstock had also expected a little more ac-tion on the filly. "Of course, I was hoping for more,"she said. "All she has to do is break her maiden and sheis worth what she brought. I think she was a bargain, but she was selling to dissolve a partnership, so therewas no reserve, and that might have hurt her." Thomasand partner Lewis Lakin, who have teamed up in boththe breeding and pinhooking businesses, are in theprocess of reducing the number of horses they owntogether. They purchased the Storm Cat filly for$310,000 as a KEESEP yearling. Named UntouchedTalent, the May foal will get two or three months offbefore heading to the barn of trainer Jeff Bonde.

A Conservative Sale for Darley... Darley Stable didn't come out on top in the biddingon the sales toppers, but Sheikh Mohammed did add afew to the roster at Barretts. Darley purchased hip 33,a colt by Indian Charlie, for $400,000, and hip 64, afilly by Orientate, for $150,000. "We watched someother horses very closely, but obviously we didn't getthem," Darley USA President Jimmy Bell said. "There isthe price where you are happy to take the horse home, and the price where you wish the other bidders goodluck. But we make an effort to be a part of all thetwo-year-old sales, because you never know when thatgood horse is going to show up. You have to be therewhen they present themselves, then decide if they fityour program. We felt that the horses we bought atBarretts had done enough on the racetrack, and theywere the type we liked physically." Last year, Darleypurchased just one at the Barretts March Sale, going to$750,000 for a colt by Dixie Union. Named Unification, the colt went on to win the GIII Grey Breeders' Cup S.at Woodbine.

Hines Family Likely to Race ‘Ron’ Through Derby... Trainer Bob Holthus said yesterday that Lawyer Ron(Langfuhr), winner of the Southwest S. in his latest andone of the favorites for Saturday’s GIII Rebel S. atOaklawn, will likely continue to be campaigned by thefamily of James Hines, Jr., who died last month at theage of 69 in an apparent accidental drowning. “Severalof the family members are interested in keeping thehorses,” said Holthus. “We've had numerous offers forLawyer Ron, but their father indicated that he didn'twant him to be sold, so I think his family will keep himthrough the [GI] Kentucky Derby.”

Pletcher Outlines Team Plans There are very few stables in the game that canboast of having a single horse with a legitimate chanceof winning the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Todd Pletcher, who set a record with 38 nominations to this year’sTriple Crown, certainly tops that group. Armed with afull crew of up-and-coming sophomores, Pletcher out-lined plans for a number of his current racing stars, including Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) and Keyed Entry(Honour and Glory). The former, winner of the GIIRemsen S. and GIII Nashua S. last term, won his mostrecent start in the Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa BayDowns and is slated to take a shot at the GIII TampaBay Derby Saturday. “Timing is the most importantthing,” said Pletcher, explaining the decision to run thebay back at Tampa. “We ran a mile and an eighth previ-ously in the Remsen [at Aqueduct Nov. 26], but wedidn’t want to run his first time back that long.” Blue-grass Cat, who is currently stabled at Palm Meadows, will be shipped to Tampa early Saturday morning. Asfor tactics, Pletcher added, “We’d like to see him sit ina similar stalking spot as he did in the Sam F. Davis.”Keyed Entry, an impressive winner in only his third startin the Feb. 4 GII Hutcheson S., will try and stretchbeyond a mile for the first time when he takes on Achil-les of Troy in Saturday’s GIII Gotham S. at Aqueduct.“There is no question Keyed Entry will handle a mileand a sixteenth,” confirmed Pletcher. “The key iswhether he can go a mile and an eighth and beyond. But what we really care about is if he can get the dis-tance May 6 [Kentucky Derby]. If he can relax, he willbe able to get the distance.” In a tactic gaining in popu-larity in recent times, Pletcher explained the decision togive the lightly-raced colt a five week respite followinghis impressive victory in the Hutcheson. “Following theHutcheson he needed a little more time, so we decidedon the Mar. 18 races,” he said. “The Gotham madesense because we are already set up [in New York], andour horses have been running well.” Pletcher indicatedthat a decision whether the pair will have three or fourweeks off before their final Derby preps would be madedepending on how the duo fares this weekend. In othermajor Derby preps, Pletcher confirmed that My GoldenSong (Unbridled’s Song), fourth in the GII Fountain ofYouth S. Mar. 4, is likely to start in the Apr. 8 GII Illi-nois Derby, while Sunriver (Saint Ballado), victorious ina Mar. 4 Gulfstream allowance, will contest the GIFlorida Derby Apr. 1. Another of Pletcher’s recentGulfstream allowance winners, Tahoe Warrior (CarsonCity), is slated to make his graded stakes debut in theGII Lanes End S. Mar. 25 at Turfway Park.

This weekend's Grade I events were a pair of distaffcontests at Santa Anita, the GI Santa Margarita H. for

four-year-olds and up-wards, and the GI SantaAnita Oaks, forthree-year-olds. The win-ners of both theses raceswere sired by stallionswho left these shores forJapan, but whereas theexport of Boston Harbor--sire of the SantaMargarita heroine HealthyAddiction--appears to bepermanent, Thunder

Gulch, sire of the Santa Anita Oaks victress, Balance, was merely leased for a year.

The champion two-year-old of 1996, Boston Harborwas expected to get his like, and when his first cropcame up with just one North American two-year-oldstakes winner, his fate was sealed. Ultimately, whilehe's not set the world on fire, Boston Harbor did actu-ally prove fairly useful. His first crop did eventuallyproduced three-time graded scorer Boston Common, and he now has 19 stakes winners from four crops, including, in addition to Healthy Addiction and BostonCommon, other graded stakes winners My Boston Gal,Mauk Four, Boston Bull, Daiwa Bandit and WonderfulDays. Thunder Gulch, born two years before Boston Harbor, showed considerable talent at two, winning the GIIRemsen S., and finishing second in the GII Cowdin S.and GI Hollywood Futurity. It was at three, however, that he really excelled, earning honors as championthree-year-old colt after winning seven of 10 starts, including the GI Kentucky Derby, GI Belmont S., GITravers S. and GI Florida Derby. Thus, although he tooonly had one U.S. stakes winner in his firsttwo-year-old crop, there was always a reasonable ex-pectation that his runners would improve with age. That proved to be the case, with Thunder Gulch's firstcrop of three-year-olds featuring Spain, Grade I-placedat two, and successful in GI Breeders' Cup Distaff atthree, and the GII Nassau County S. winner C'EstL'Amour. The second crop proved even better, head-lined by Horse of the Year Point Given; GI CCA Oaksheroine Tweedside; millionairess Mystic Lady; graded-stakes-winner Thunder Bertie, and GI Kentucky Derbyrunner-up Invisible Ink, pointing Thunder Gulch up as ahorse who could reliable get Classic-distance stakeshorses. As an aside here, we should mention that the week-end saw Point Given credited with his first stakes win-ner when Go Between took the GIII Palm Beach S. Hispedigree combines Thunder Gulch's broodmare sire,Storm Bird, with the similarly bred Nijinsky II, a formulathat has also worked very well for Thunder Gulch.Alan Porter cont. p8

Unfortunately, having made a very bright start withhis first two crops, Thunder Gulch then lost some mo-

mentum. The typically difficult thirdseason resulted in a crop whichyielded just two stakes winners, andhis fourth season was spent in Ja-pan. To compound things, his fifthseason, back in the U.S. came onthe heels of the relatively quiet startmade by his first two-year-olds.Thunder Gulch's next two crops, however, were conceived following

the deeds of Spain and Point Given, giving him everyopportunity to become a classic (in more than onesense of the word) rebound stallion. Happily, Thunder Gulch has seized those opportuni-ties: his 2002 crop has so far produced four stakeswinners, headed by the GI Matron S. heroine Sense ofStyle. And by the end of last year, it looked very muchas if he was set for a bright 2006, as four of hisdaughters--Balance, Better Now, Love Locket and Pri-vate World--captured stakes events, with Better Nowlanding the GIII Tempted S. Balance ended last yearwith a closing second to Diplomat Lady in the GI Holly-wood Starlet S., but she's emerged as the dominantforce among the Western three-year-old fillies this term, presaging Sunday's victory with a win in the GI LasVirgenes S. Balance is the second foal of her dam, Vertigineux, alightly raced daughter of Kris S. who won two of herseven starts. Vertigineux is off to a good start to herstud career, as her first foal is the Remington Park Oakswinner Where's Bailey (by Aljabr, a grandson of Thun-der Gulch's maternal grandsire, Storm Bird). Vertigineux raced on this side of the Atlantic, butmost of the best runners out her dam, For the Flag, made their names in Europe. For the Flag's Robellinodaughter, Restrained, was a Listed winner in France, and is dam and granddam of black-type winners in thatcountry.

Her other stakes winners were the brothers Blash andNational Service, both by Master Willie, one ablack-type scorer in the French provinces, the other in Germany. On the Staff, a sister to Blash and NationalService, never won a black-type event, but was secondin the G2 Sun Chariot S. in England. Vertigineux'sgranddam is the very well-bred In the Offing, a daugh-ter of Hoist the Flag and the stakes-winning Tom Foolmare Mrs. Peterkin. In the Offing was only a minorwinner, but she produced the GIII Vineland H. victressHelenska, and was also third dam of Canadian cham-pion turf mare Sweetest Thing (whose dam was by ason of Roberto out of a daughter of In the Offing, andso bred on very similar lines to Vertigineux). In additionto In the Offing, Mrs. Peterkin produced threeblack-type winners, among them Sweet Alliance, hero-ine of the GII Kentucky Oaks, and subsequently dam of the G1 Irish Derby winner Shareef Dancer. Balance follows the GI CCA Oaks heroine Tweedsideas the second Grade I winner by Thunder Gulch out ofa mare by a son of Roberto. As Thunder Gulch is agrandson of Mr. Prospector, this mating brings togetherthe very similarly bred Gold Digger (dam of Mr. Pros-pector) and Bramalea (dam of Roberto). Both theseexcellent mares were by Nashua, and Gold Digger's granddam, Miss Dogwood, was by Bull Dog out of aBlue Larkspur mare, whereas Bramalea's dam, Rarelea, was by a son of Bull Dog out of a Blue Larkspur mare.Alan Porter may be contacted [email protected].
