Preface

Without transport the world would grind to a halt. Literally! Forget about going anywhere - school, office, shops or a vacation - you could probably stay indoors for days, log in to a virtual classroom, work from home, buy from online stores and read a book. But what about food, clothing, medicine, vehicles, computers — everything has been transported into your world from somewhere else.

Now imagine this... Reasonable detours redirect traffic just seconds after an accident. Speed limits are adjusted to the flow of traffic. Extra lanes become available before the bottleneck. Cars ‘talk’ to us and each other. It’s not magic and it’s not your imagination wandering while you wait behind the wheel.

It’s called Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), a catch-all phrase for applying many different technologies to our transport networks, the goal being integrated infrastructure that communicates with vehicles and systems.

cgi’s ITS uses a variety of proprietary technologies that work in harmony, including space and land-based wireless communication radar, sensor and information technologies,

and more. We’re talking about things like dynamic transport management, infrastructure charging, smart travel, smart logistics and asset management.

With over 40 years of experience in the industry, we’ve been at the forefront of many of these technologies. We’re excited about getting them into our communities, into our cars, into our handheld devices and really integrating how we think about transportation.

Transport networks are at the heart of the economy and society. Networks of the future will be super efficient, fully integrated and sustainable. Every kind of vehicle – from trains and ships to cargo containers will ‘talk’ to processing centres, transmitting identification, positioning and other useful data. Fast and user-friendly journey planners will help travellers plan intermodal, multi-agency trips and provide real time updates of travel routes, weather forecasts and traffic conditions.

Dynamic traffic management (DTM) is a broad concept but typically involves harnessing real-time information to control traffic flows. We work with our clients to implement real-time systems, which provide valuable information about the capacity of transport networks and usage – whether it’s a road network, rail system, air corridor or shipping port.

Our experience in DTM is helping our clients to unlock the following key benefits:

• manage their assets efficiently

• respond to real-time events in a timely manner

• predict events and implement contingency plans effectively

• maintain and increase customer satisfaction by keeping users informed and up to date

• increase efficiency and reduce fuel use

Traffic Control

We can provide our clients with the means to gain a complete overview of the traffic systems relevant to them, seamlessly integrating with other systems whilst maximising interoperability, enabling our clients to exert direct or indirect influence on traffic accordingly.

Case Study – Traffic Management System, Eurotunnel

Eurotunnel, operating a roll-on-roll-off shuttle service for over 4 million vehicles annually, wanted to be able to effectively and efficiently manage traffic at all of its terminals. We implemented the Traffic Management System for Eurotunnel. This solution separates traffic entering the terminal into categories, directs vehicles quickly through frontier controls to holding areas, forms vehicles into appropriately sized loads based on profile and time of next shuttle, directs traffic onto shuttle and then directs off-loaded traffic rapidly out of the terminal. The solution uses over 1,000 sensors and includes a Central control system providing information to staff on the profile of the shuttle and Passenger information systems.

Transport Information Services

Once you’ve collected the data, you want to do something useful with it. cgi has a wealth of experience providing Traffic Information to the relevant parties, enabling them to make informed decisions when it comes to travel.

Case Study – Real Time Traffic Information, Finnish Road Authority

The objective was to make real time traffic information collected over the network available to car users prior to their journey. The Finnish Road Authority believed a significant percentage of network delays experienced by road users could be prevented if traffic information was provided prior to journeys.

We developed a real-time traffic information website for the Finnish Roads Authority based on its NAVICI technology. This website provides traffic information to the public prior to their journey and provides alternate routes if there is disruption on their route.

This system is reliable and fast and in collaboration with other real time information services. It has helped to reduce congestion and minimize unnecessary delays which has been received well by its users.

Case Study - Real Time Information System and AVL, RATP

RATP needed to improve the management of its large bus and tram fleet and provide real-time travel information to its passengers. The service needed to be provided for approximately 4,000 buses, 250 Bus lines, 3 Tramways lines, 12,000 Bus Stops (with count-down information), and 80 Bus garage Monitoring stations.

We redeveloped large components of their existing Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system to make it an effective real time bus monitoring system to improve fleet management and maximise the utilisation of their busses via efficient scheduling. Each bus was installed with a GPS system and sophisticated embedded electronic devices enabling RATP to gain an accurate picture of where their busses were at any given point increasing their scheduling performance and asset management. On top of this passengers could make more informed decisions about their journeys.

Multi Modal Journey Planning

We develop state-of-the-art passenger information system’s that enhance usability, increase demand and improves customer service through the provision of accurate up-to-date service information, relieving pressure on call centres and enabling best use of transport network

Multimodal Journey planning systems have multiple effects which benefit the traveller, transport operator and infrastructure owner alike. Through greater information a change in traveller behaviour will: .• reduce the amount of cars in the

area, reducing the environmental impact, and improving the traffic flow, therefore ensuring faster, more reliable journey times.

• empower travellers with journey knowledge.

Page 7: Experts behind intelligent transport

• lead to greater use of walking and cycling modes, cuts down on carbon emissions.

Studies have shown that journey planner’s increases the use of public transport and shifts trips from private cars.

Case Study – Helsinki Journey Planner, YTV

The Helsinki Regional Transport Authority selected cgi to implement a door-todoor Journey Planner to help people find the most efficient way to get from A to B. We implemented the Navici journey planning solution which finds the best options using any travel combination from walking and cycling to trains and ferries. The journey planner has won several awards and has been rated Finland’s second most valued internet brand.

Intelligent Transport Systems Along with providing a valuable service to travellers the system also offers the ability to sell everything as a service, including map data so you can see a return on investment as well as encouraging the use of public transport. Open API also leads to brand independent mobile and web apps development by third parties which further encourages the use of the system.

Case Study – Journey.fi Nation Wide Journey Planner, Finnish Ministry of Transport

The Ministry of Transport needed a partner to design and implement Journey. fi, the Finnish National door to door public transport Journey Planner covering the whole country.

The Journey.fi service had to identify the best route for any travel within Finland, using bus, train, tram, metro, ferry or simply walking. The service needed to include all scheduled bus routes and both local and long-distance trains.

We designed, delivered and are currently hosting Journey.fi on behalf of the Finnish Ministry of Transport. The system holds approximately 18 million address numbers, 170,000 street names, 190,000 service lines and more than 20,000 stops.

Empowered Personal Travel Itinerary Monitoring Service (EPTIMS)

As passenger transport strives to transform in order to meet the needs of its ever more demanding customers the seed of a new dawn in door-to-door traveller experience has been growing. And nowhere has this been more noticeable than in the convergence of ticketing, retailing and the provision of travel service information in order to offer better customer experience and gain customer insight and loyalty.

We have developed EPTIMS, a multi-modal, personalised, context-aware online ‘virtual travel assistant’ service for travellers, both before and throughout every part of their journey.

The solution focuses on information that the traveller can easily understand, trust and want to continue to use, and in doing so accelerate development of the concept for multi-modal real-time journey information service provision The service itself features a number of major innovations in personal journey management including real-time service updates and the opportunity to immediately re-plan, based on latest information to-hand, where connections are likely to be missed as a result of service disruptions.

This offers the opportunity to influence passengers in real-time, on a context awareness basis, in reaction to perturbations of planned journeys, and most importantly, in such a way that establishes mass personalisation and intimacy with individual travellers.

Vehicle 2 Vehicle & Vehicle 2 Infrastructure

Vehicles and infrastructure that communicate any-time any-where using wireless and/or wired technologies and create opportunities for increasing operational efficiency and top-line revenues.

There’s a revolution on the street. Drivers get personalized information when they’re on highways, regional or urban roads. So they are warned of approaching traffic hazards before they turn the corner. Find out the overall traffic situation before starting their trip. And always know the best routes to take.

Every player in the transport world – the traveler, the road or fleet operator, the service provider –talks directly with each other and with the roadside infrastructure.

CVIS

Sci fi fantasy? Believe it or not, Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems (CVIS) is working to make this a reality. The challenge is to connect cars, trucks, buses, traffic lights, infrastructure into a network. We are working with the European Commission on the CVIS initiative. The activities we work on are:

• positioning and mapping

• system integration

• testing and demonstrating

Our in-car and infrastructure technologies transform how vehicles

‘talk’ with each other and the broader

transport network. We’ve always held that technology should make it easier for people at work – and away from it. The CVIS platform and applications are perfect examples of this. Complex technical work happens in the background with very little need for human intervention. They are built to make the lives of drivers and passengers easier, safer and more enjoyable.

CVIS is a European project coordinated by Ertico, the European ITS organization which will increase road safety and efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of road transport.

SPITS

No more traffic congestion. Emergency vehicles get to a crash sites faster than before. A single electronic payment mechanism to pay for fuel, tolls, public transport fares, parking, and a variety of other charges that busy travellers encounter every day. This is no longer a fantasy, the future is here.

Strategic Platform for Intelligent Traffic Systems (SPITS) is a Dutch initiative, funded by a consortium of 13 technology partners and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. We are a key player in accelerating the concepts of cooperative systems towards the market in the SPITS consortium.

The goal of SPITS is to create an open, scalable and affordable platform for future transport systems. It is hoped that this will then positively affect mobility by making vehicles smarter, cleaner and safer.

We developed the secure core services for the open platform that offers the infrastructure for cooperative driving in Europe.

Pay As You drive

Use our history of expertise in telematics, combined with experience gained from our award winning solutions such as EMO and CRIMSON, to help reduce the risks associated with auto insurance.

EMO

We have developed an award-winning telematics solution -EMO - a secure, efficient, reliable and vendor neutral invehicle telematics system that captures vehicle usage parameters in real-time. EMO has been recognised as one of the ten game-changing innovations to combat climate change.

EMO monitors driving behaviour through analysing the emissions of the vehicle. In a recent trial EMO helped reduce fuel consumption by over 10% leading to average savings of €33 per vehicle per month and reduced aggressive driving by 50%.

By monitoring driving habitats and driving style change as drivers become more aware of the impact of their driving style. Accurate emissions data can also reduce maintenance costs as constantly high emission output can be an early indicator a vehicle needs repair giving the operator an early warning light.

Page 9: Experts behind intelligent transport

cgi.com 7

EMO also seamlessly integrates with your insurance application and calculates premium in real-time, based on distance, time and speed. Customers today want the latest in terms of technology and ecofriendly solutions. They want to understand how they can reduce their personal carbon emissions and fuel costs and they’d like to be rewarded for doing so. By driving in an efficient safe way a customer can reduce their insurance and fuel costs at the same time be more environmentally friendly. In this scenario everybody is a winner.

As EMO is a ready to use pre-developed solution this represents a cost effective solution.

CRIMSON

Crimson is our usage-based insurance solution. It allows insurance companies to evaluate the risk of drivers in real time with the help of an onboard device. The onboard device monitors driving parameters like distance, speed, time and location to arrive at a customised premium for a customer based on usage.

Crimson enables customers to controltheir insurance premiums based on usage and by providing constant feedback to the drivers on their vehicle usage. For insurance companies, Crimson helps with customer segmentation by helping to identify riskier drivers, and hence helping with better risk profiling. Insurance is therefore better administered.

By using crimson insurance companies can have access to a huge mine of data to validate fraudulent claims. It also helps in quick completion of the claims process.

Crimson isn’t restricted to pay-as-you-drive solution but also extends to pay-how-you drive. Crimson solution is not tied with a particular onboard device, it can interface to any GPS or ODB II based devices.

Crimson also seamlessly integrates with our EMO solution which rates drivers based on carbon emission. The Crimson solution can be integrated with insurance brokerage firms/ resellers as well as insurance companies.

Meg

Our solution Meg gets you accurate, realtime information on your fleet, giving you complete control. A simple SMS from your mobile phone gets you the exact location of your vehicle wherever it is. You even get SMS alerts and recorded call-backs on vehicle location. As a fleet operator or owner, cgi Meg offers you better operational, time and cost efficiencies. It helps you build important value-addedservices for improved customer intimacy and loyalty.

As you manage your fleets better, your drivers become more vigilant. You can track fuel consumption and ensure there are no detours in the routes. You also get alerts in case of delays or route deviations. More importantly, you

can track your vehicle in case of theft. Your customers are happier too, as they can get real time information by just sending an SMS.

Ticketing and Verification

An end-to-end suite of solutions hosted as BPO, Pay-as-you-Grow or on-premise approach to provide barrier free access, charging and verification schemas on Smartcards, RFIDs and Phones for traffic control systems and transportation systems.

Case Study – Mobile Ticketing Inspection and Verification, SNCF

We successfully delivered the largest French mobility project with over 12,000 ticket inspectors equipped with PDA for SNCF France’s national state-owned railway company. The business process changed from a pure ticket control process to that of a commercial and selling process in addition to its existing validation duty. We, designed, developed and deployed a mobile solution, using a specially designed RFID component to control the RFID Smartcard Navigo passes. This improved working conditions for ticket inspectors, give them commercial addedvalue, and optimise the passenger service by deploying a new range of Handhelds mobile ticketing units.

Case Study – Concessionary Commercial Smartcard Scheme, Centro

Centro, the UK Passenger Transport Executive for the Birmingham & West Midlands area wanted to develop a smart infrastructure to use smartcard technology to administer its concessionary fares scheme and to offer other commercial fares schemes in the West Midlands area. Centro needed to issue a 500,000 smartcards, to each person resident in the West Midlands area who is entitled to concessionary travel.

Since July 2007, we have designed and implemented the overall technical architecture design for the Centro Smartcard scheme with compliance to the UK ITSO Standard. We have have produced and delivered over 500,000 National Concessionary Passes for over 60 blind and disabled people in the region. The take up rate of these smartcard passes is estimated at 89%, proving the success of the scheme amongst the population.

Case Study – Smart Card, Transport for Scotland

Transport Scotland wanted to be able to offer concessionary travel the length and breadth of Scotland. The scheme would allow those aged over sixty and disabled people to travel free, at any time, on any bus or scheduled long-distance coach service, anywhere in Scotland. They chose us to develop key components of the world’s first national smartcard-based concessionary travel scheme based upon the UK Government’s new ITSO standard. That challenge was formidable, particularly when over 300 individual bus operators had to be brought into the scheme. Implemented to extremely challenging timescales and in a highly-complex environment, the system has enabled Transport Scotland to make national concessionary travel a reality since April 2006.

Electric Vehicle back offices

Imagine a world that is free of pollution. Where you can breathe clean, fresh air, even while in heavy traffic. Where you can enjoy long drives without contributing to any sort of air pollution. Wouldn’t that be something? With our innovative new solution, cgi CiMS, this could very well be the future!

We off business consulting, solutions and services to facilitate and support Electric Vehicle (EV) charging, based on open standards, including EV domain knowledge for public and commercial organisations.

Charge point Management Systems – CiMS

We have developed a Charge point interactive Management System (CiMS) that is delivered as Sotware as a Servcie (SaaS) on our private Cloud. With CiMS, organisations can manage their broad charge point infrastructure and are able to process transactions. The system is independent from the charge points and connects to different brands of charge points, offers privacy protection to its users and is future proof – for example it can easily integrate mobile payments and smart grids.

Case Study – e-laad.nl, Netherlands

E-laad is a joint venture of Dutch Grid Owners co-operating to prepare the Dutch grid for the future: a future with an increasing use of electric vehicles. However, market demand for electric cars will be very limited if there are not enough charging facilities.

The goal of e-laad.nl is: creating and testing a uniform, rural covering and general accessible infrastructure of 10,000 charging stations. We developed the software for the charge point and the central system. The project achieved the goals and is fully operational serving users across the Netherlands. Such was its success that has won the highest award in the category of Environment, Energy and Agriculture in the IDG’s Computer World Honours Programme.

Case Study – Rallye Aicha des Gazelles, 2011

Our EMO and CiMS played a critical role in the annual Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in Morocco in 2011. The rally is an all-female event which awards winners based on their eco-driving. CGI EMO was used to determine the race rankings based on the green driving behaviour of the rally participants. We also used our charge point management system (CiMS) to support an electric vehicle used in the rally. We worked with Alfen to develop a prototype mobile charging station with three large solar panels installed on a rolling platform. We have deployed over 280 rapid recharge pillars like this in the Netherlands and Germany. The maintenance of the system was provided directly from the Netherlands through CiMS.

Cycle Hire Back offices

We offer a single back office system that can be hosted as BPO, Pay-as-you-Grow or on-premise approach for all cycle user charging schemes. We have a very solid track record in Smart Travel with a deep knowledge of payments and billing systems. Our systems ddeliver a ‘critical’ business process with 95% functionality ‘out of the box’ allowing for a lower total

cost of ownership. Our solution can be customised to different requirements for different charging schemes.

Case Study – London Cycle Hire Scheme, TFL

The Cycle Hire scheme is a public bicycle sharing scheme for short journeys in and around central London. People are able to pick up a bicycle, use it as they like, then drop it off, ready for the next person. Under the pioneering scheme bikes are available 24 hours a day, all year round, from over 400 different locations across Central London, generating an additional 40,000 cycle journeys every day.

Our components of the ambitious project included the design, build and operation of the easy to use payment system and the associated back office. It is estimated that the back office will handle around 3 million transactions every month, with the capacity to handle even more than this. We were selected because of our track record in Smart Travel, and our in depth knowledge of payments and billing systems.

This scheme will be the most sustainable, environmentally friendly form of public transport ever seen in the UK. It will provide a greater choice of transport and should reduce

congestion on the capital’s buses and tubes as well as encouraging people to leave their car at home.

Road User Charging Back offices

Our single back office system can be hosted as BPO, Pay-as-you-Grow or on-premise approach for all road user charging schemes which encompass Buses, Low Emission Zones and Congestion Zones. We have a very solid track record in Smart Travel with a deep knowledge of payments and billing systems. Our systems deliver a ‘critical’ business process with 95% functionality ‘out of the box’ allowing for a lower total cost of ownership. Our solution can be customised to different requirements for different charging schemes.

Case Study – Smart Metering, DP/DHL

DP/DHL wanted to reduce its annual fuel consumption. Using our smart metering they managed to reduce their annual fuel consumption by seven per cent. Apart from an immediate reduction in the cost base, the associated carbon emission reduction contributes to further savings in avoiding future carbon footprint penalties.

Onboard Status Monitoring

Our smart solutions combine real-time information, sensor data, to implement green initiatives, process efficiencies and smart customer coordination for regulatory bodies, government and commercial organisations. Our

systems deliver operational cost reductions, supply chain efficiencies, regulatory compliance and 24/7 visibility, alerts and detection of assets.

Case Study – Precise Train Location System, RailCorp

Following a train derailment in a country area south of Sydney in 2003 RailCorp undertook an investigation to identify how their emergency response could be improved. The findings of the investigation highlighted that the location was quite remote and had to be reached on foot. In addition, there was uncertainty about the precise location, which meant that considerable delays occurred before passengers were rescued. RailCorp

therefore decided it needed to know the location of it trains in real-time to within 250m.

CGI delivered a solution which provided the precise train location and other related information to assist during incidents. The solution uses a combination of onboard sensors (including GPS, gyro, accelerometer and magnetometer) combined with existing signal data to determine the precise train location and is represented on-shore via a web interface. CGI’s solution readily provides location information to within 10m, so that tracking is always accurate and timely. This is fed to the emergency coordination centre, from where services can be directed accurately

Asset Management

Do you have valuable assets on the move?

Modern-day trade has grown tremendously. With this, the safe and reliable transportation of goods has become even more important. This pertains to manufacturers, retailers, supply chain and transport companies, third party logistics service providers, regulatory bodies and all those with valuable goods in the field.

Imagine a solution that could give you precise end-to-end cargo management, while lowering your operational costs. That allowed real-time inventory tracking and control, even in transit. That ensured you remained competitive at all times. Sounds far-fetched? Not really.

Get real-time status that you can use

LIFT

Our Intelligent Freight and Transportation (LIFT) solution brings you just such offerings. It provides advanced, real-time information about the exact location and status of your goods, while they are on the move. It not only takes care of cargo containers but also goods inside them. It can alert authorities in case of unauthorised access inside the containers, and also protect perishable goods inside, by raising alarms if pre-defined temperature levels change.

In short, LIFT ensures secure and reliable freight management. It improves your business efficiency and restricts operational costs. And so

enables you to offer efficient value-added services to your customers as well.

A comprehensive, scalable solution, LIFT is easy to adapt as it leverages existing standards. It allows you to maintain your existing legacy systems while integrating with supply chains through Web services.

Case Study - WCRM Mobile Asset Data Collection, Network Rail

Network Rail’s largest infrastructure upgrade programme was the West Coast Route Modernisation.

Network Rail wished to use mobile handheld devices for more efficient and accurate collection of data on many aspects of the infrastructure in the field.

CGI developed a pilot solution based on Sybase iAnywhere technology, which captures data from handheld devices and synchronises this into a central database.

The devices were key in the success of the West Coast Route Modernisation Programme as the handheld devices were able to capture and upload data from a number of different sources on the field.\

Our smart solutions combine real-time information, sensor data, to implement green initiatives, process efficiencies and smart customer coordination for regulatory bodies, government and commercial organisations. Our systems deliver operational cost

reductions, supply chain efficiencies, regulatory compliance and 24/7 visibility, alerts and detection of assets.

Case Study – SNCF Mobile Asset Management Solution

The French railway service and infrastructure provider, SNCF, undertook a major programme to improve the safety and reliability on its 31,000 km of railway network.

One of the key objectives of this programme was to improve the management and the effectiveness of the engineers workforce. We implemented a solution which equips SNCF’s 800 engineers with wireless handheld terminals to collect and analyse asset data on the condition of the tracks.

The device synchronises directly with the central SNCF track asset maintenance database to remove the element of human error in data collection and handling. The solution enables SNCF to increase the accuracy and the cost efficiency of maintenance and improvement projects. The mobile workforce also directly contributes to a better maintenance of the rail network increasing safety and punctuality for its 13,000 daily passenger and freight trains.

Case Study –Vehicle Tracking Module, Olympic Delivery Authority

A solution was required for the management and tracking of delivery vehicles in and around the Olympic construction site in East London. The system needs to track and confirm road, rail and river movements to assist with security ease congestion and increase efficiency.

We implemented an RFID tag-based vehicle tracking solution. Vehicles are issued with a unique RFID tag which is scanned at locations throughout the site using RFID enabled mobile devices and information passed to back-end applications. These applications manage vehicle tracking and the booking and scheduling of deliveries.

The scope of the solution covers:

• a web-based vehicle tracking module that is used to manage users, mobile devices, produce reports and set policies

• a delivery booking module to process and schedule arrivals and deliveries

• unique identifiers for each vehicle – passive RFID-enabled clipboards

• mobile terminals for scanning RFID tags.

ODA has recorded the following benefits from the use of the RFID VTM so far:

• Reduced congestion impact on the local community

• Improved security

• Improved delivery times, especially at bottlenecks, through efficient management and scheduling of deliveries

Case Study – Asset Management With GIS ActuRail, ProRail

ProlRail wanted to be able to display scheduled maintenance works on the rail network using a geographic display to help with ongoing scheme development, project planning and maintenance prioritisation and scheduling. We designed and developed a solution which interfaced with the data coming from the in-house GIS database ArcGIS (COTS, ESRI). Our team integrated Google Maps into the application to provide a simple user interface to a resilient mapping database.

The ActuRail application has fourcomponents:

• The Map interface

• The Website on the IIS server

• ArcGIS containing the geographic data

• The asset management database containing information on railroad maintenance

Up to date maintenance works are displayed via Google Maps which can be viewed on the client PCs via a web browser. The user interface was intuitive and required no training. The solution was a cost effective way of achieving client objectives.

IBOR

Our IBOR offering helps local government and other organisations to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of street lighting and other assets, through management and remote control of these assets.

This includes potential reductions in electricity use/costs, by up to 40%, through more precise real-time control of street lighting. It can also bring potential savings of up to 15% to 20% in maintenance costs, through better understanding of the condition of assets.

The offering has a wider application to centrally manage a whole range of assets in public spaces, well beyond lighting.

This offering also helps clients to reduce carbon by using less energy, improve safety through better lighting and central control. It also helps to deliver benefits across assets and municipality policy areas because of the flexibility of IBOR to work across many types of assets and situations.
