From The Principal's Desk Dear Parents and Friends

Science Week We are delighted to have such a wonderful program of activities and workshops as part of next week's Science Week activities. While further details are included later in this newsletter I wanted to thank our numerous parent and community volunteers as well as our school staff and the Science Committee with Ms Simpfendorfer, Mrs Holt, Ms Kocken, Ms da Luz and Mrs Paterson for arranging this terrific program of events. We hope to see you at the open morning where you can visit your child's class and other rooms across the school.

Thank you volunteers As always, we appreciate the time and energy that keeps the school 'afloat'. With events like this

weekend's Busy Bee, next week's P&C meeting, Sausage sizzle, Long Table Dinner and Carnival Cafe coming soon, we are grateful for the way our school is supported by its community. Thank you.

Russell Bembridge Principal

Assembly Year 1 Room 1

Wet Weather Collection - Plan Ahead

Thank you to drivers for the patience you display when waiting to collect students after school. While we still encourage you to park away and walk in, we appreciate the consideration shown by so many drivers. Please check your car BEFORE you leave home or work to make sure that you have cleared space to allow children and their bags and equipment to fit in. Aim for entry on the passenger side of the vehicle wherever possible. Stay safe.

Sausage Sizzle - Thursday 10 August 2017

Reminder, orders will be taken until Friday 4 August in the afternoon on the verandah outside Room 4. Late orders will not be accepted.

Elizabeth Street Crossing Due to some changes in volunteer availability, we have two vacancies on the Elizabeth St crosswalk. At this stage these vacancies are on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. It only takes around 20 minutes of your time, and is quite simple to do. If you are available to help, please let Fiona Cocks know ([email protected]).

Improving Literacy Parent Workshop 9 am Friday 4 August (Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Parents)

Thank you, to the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary parents that are coming to the Improving Literacy Workshop on Friday morning (August 4). The workshop will begin at 9 am in the library and conclude at 10 am, however, if you are onsite earlier, you are welcome to join us for a 'cuppa' beforehand. I look forward to seeing you all there for an informative session run by the West Coast Language Development Centre. Julie Simpfendorfer

Parent Workshop - Cyber Safety - Wednesday 16 August 7pm

Nedlands Primary School has organised a presenter from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation to run a parent workshop on the topic of Cyber Safety. The workshop will be held in the Altius Centre on Wednesday 16 August and will begin at 7pm. We hope that you can join us for some valuable tips for keeping your children safe online. During the school day, Year 5 & 6 students will participate in a student workshop with the same presenter, and the teachers will also participate in a workshop after school. Please reserve the date and join us for this important Parent Workshop. For further information please contact Julie Simpfendorfer by calling the school or emailing [email protected]

The theme for this year's Book Week is 'Escape to Everywhere'. This year's performance, 'Super Duper', is a brand new educational musical for schools with an exciting, dynamic and interactive narrative created to celebrate the Book Week theme. It explores the themes of striving to be your best and not underestimating people's potential. Children are invited to dress up in costume, on the day of the incursion, to represent their favourite book character. Session Times: Years 1 to 3 11.30am to 12.40pm Years 4 to 6 1.40pm to 2.50pm

NAPLAN Online

Nedlands Primary School has undertaken to be a trial school for NAPLAN online. Online NAPLAN testing will commence around Australia during 2018, so Nedlands PS has volunteered to be a trial school in preparation. During August, we will be participating in some testing in order to check our technological capacity to handle the testing. This will mean that some students will participate in a NAPLAN test online during this time, however, no results will be gathered from their participation, and the students will be aware that it is not a real NAPLAN test. The testing task is to measure the capacity of our computer network to handle the bandwidth required. If you have any questions about this matter, feel free to contact Julie Simpfendorfer on 9386 2278 or by email [email protected]

Earn & Learn for Robotics at Nedlands Primary School

Nedlands Primary School will again be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program and this year our stickers will go towards Robotics equipment to ensure we have equipment available for every year level. If you happen to be shopping at Woolworths between Wednesday 26th July and Tuesday 19th September and receive some Earn & Learn stickers, please reserve them for Nedlands Primary School. You may like to get your friends and relatives to save any stickers they receive too. We

will be launching a competition for the class that collects the most stickers. More details will be available as the date draws closer. For further information, please contact Julie Simpfendorfer by calling 9386 2278 or by email [email protected]

Reminder to Parents and Carers Please notify the office by phone or email if you have children who will be absent from school for an extended period of time, including a return date. When children are leaving the school permanently we require an email and/or a formal letter addressed to the school including the student's forwarding address and their last day at Nedlands Primary School. Also, all late students (not in class by 8.45am) must come through the school office to be issued with a (purple slip) Late/Absence to be handed to their classroom teacher. The late/absence will be recorded so that our SMS messaging alerts are as accurate as possible. Thank you for your assistance with this process.
