Travel aboard the ships of the Lindblad-National Geographic fleet: explore remarkable geographies like Galápagos, Baja California, Antarctica, the Arctic and more — and have professional photographers at your side and at your service.

Wherever you are on your photographic journey, we can meet you. Our Expedition Photography program features three distinct components:

1 Lindblad-National Geographic Certified Photo Instructor aboard every ship in the Lindblad-National Geographic fleet Our Certified Photo Instructors will help you turn your point & shoot into an “aim & create” camera — to take the best photos of your life. (See page 2)

2 A National Geographic photographer aboard every departure of National Geographic Explorer, the world’s ultimate expedition ship The opportunity to travel with a National Geographic photographer will inspire you as you pick up tips in exciting field situations — to increase your skills. (See page 8)

3 Photo Expeditions: select departures custom-tailored to create extraordinary opportunities for photographers of all levels If you are an avid photographer or simply eager to learn how to make better pictures with your digital camera, then consider joining one of our popular Photo Expeditions, adventurous itineraries designed by photographers for photographers. (See page 14)

Plus, onboard amenities make Expedition Photography even more rewarding: a handy Mac kiosk for downloading memory cards: talks, critiques, slideshows; “Laptop Gallery” events; and post-voyage photo ideas, including making a gorgeous photo book keepsake.

No workshop or class can duplicate the exclusive blend of travel, natural history, world-class photo ops and pro guidance that Expedition Photography provides. Now, see why.

Board any of our ships with National Geographic in the name and you’ll meet a knowledgeable, engaging certified Photo Instructor. This veteran naturalist is specially trained to assist you with camera settings, the basic elements of framing, composition and lighting; and to provide shooting tips in the field to ensure you go home with fantastic photos.

Unlike a photography class or workshop, an expedition is a highly dynamic environment, where an incredible sighting can occur at any moment. So the fact that your Photo Instructor is also a skilled naturalist is invaluable. He or she can help you better understand the wildlife, so you can be at the right place at the right time to capture amazing behavior – whether you’re shooting from the ship’s deck, a Zodiac or on a walk.

Take an expedition with us and you’ll not only have the experience of a lifetime, you’ll have the shots to prove it.

Key Benefits: Understand your camera; experiment with settings other than ‘Auto’

Your camera is a travel tool

“ Our expeditions are perfect environments for people traveling together who

have different interests. Often non-photographer companions used to accuse

photographers of “hiding inside their viewfinders.” Now, it’s apparent to

everyone that through photography people are able to be “present” in these

inspiring geographies in a profound way. To shoot great photos you have to

learn, observe and really see. A camera is a great tool for living in the moment.

And for photographers’ companions — there’s a world of possibilities and

activities every day aboard all of our expeditions.” — RALPh Lee hOPkins, DiRectOR Of exPeDitiOn PhOtOgRAPhy,

“ ‘The best camera to have is the one that’s with you all the time,’

goes the adage. So you can participate in the fun of Expedition

Photography even with your iPhone. It makes it easy to take and

share your photos on social media sites and with close friends

and family. I’ve been teaching some onboard workshops in iPhone

photography, and the images people capture with it can be very

intimate and moving. This in itself is something marvelous.” — COTTON COULSON, NATIONAL GEOGrAPHIC PHOTOGrAPHEr

Learn how to ‘aim & create’ Most guests aboard our ships have point & shoot cameras. But our certified Photo Instructors prefer another term: “aim & create.” And when you see the results you get from working with your Instructor, you’ll understand why it’s apt. You’ll learn how to to use settings other than Auto, and about the power in your camera box. When you’re out in the field with a Photo Instructor, you’ll have someone helping you understand the conditions and the elements of composition to consider as well as the buttons, so you can make images that better express what you see and feel.

Discover new challengesA considerable number of our guests have invested in their passion for photography — money on gear, and time on learning how best to use it. For them, Expedition Photography offers a perfect set of conditions. Having the ship as mobile base camp means never being without gear options. Park your gear bag beside you and have what you need at hand: the ship is a perfect shooting platform. Or challenge yourself to experiment with shooting from a Zodiac, a kayak or on a trail walk. Daily variety — subjects, light, weather — plus, the services of onboard pros for answers and timely tips, and onboard talks and share sessions, provide everything you need to make quantum leaps on your road to mastery.

And whether you use a DSLR, point & shoot or simply your smartphone camera, you’ll profit from instruction and advice — to go home with your best shots ever.

Shoot with and learn from the acknowledged best: National Geographic photographers. The same pros who astound the world each month in the pages of NatioNal GeoGraphic magazine are on every departure aboard National Geographic Explorer as she journeys from Antarctica to the Arctic North, and all the marvels in-between.

They explore with us because they’re excited to share the expedition experience and their skills with photo enthusiasts of all levels. At your side on deck or in field situations, they provide inspiration, tips and advice gleaned over the course of their careers. They also offer supportive critiques and informative onboard presentations.

It’s interesting to ask your National Geographic photographer about their magazine stories and subjects over drinks or dinner. And nothing boosts your confidence like shooting alongside a published pro—knowing that you’re aiming at the same polar bear, penguin or incredible sunset, and getting the same awesome shot.

Join us aboard National Geographic Explorer, the world’s ultimate expedition ship, and go home with the best photos of your life.

Travel with inspiring prosThe same talented, intrepid pros who have made NATIONAL GEOGrAPHIC the monthly must-read for anyone interested in images are your partners in adventure. Paul Nicklen, featured here, is the author of Polar Obsession, a frequent contributor to NatioNal GeoGraphic and a frequent guest aboard National Geographic Explorer. He and the other National Geographic photographers you’ll meet when you travel with us are natural observers of the world and its subjects, and supremely gifted storytellers. They’re engaging traveling companions who will inspire your image-making, and provide valuable guidance.

For this story, writer Kenneth Brower and photographer Paul Nicklen experienced South Georgia aboard National Geographic Explorer. Their article “Resurrection Island” describes what they saw as the ship retraced Shackleton’s fabled dead-reckoned run to South Georgia in the James Caird.

Shoot as if you’re on assignment “ What Sisse & I often do with a group when we’re out exploring

is structure an exercise. We ask them to imagine they’re on a

National Geographic assignment, and we share what’s going

through our heads as we see pictures. We get them to look for

iconic shots that give their overall impression of a place and

could be the lead photo in an article; and detail shots to convey

flavor. These images, taken in Tromso, Norway last season

captured the uniqueness and authenticity of the place. And the

participants got to add visual storytelling to their expanding

skills as photographers.” — cOttOn cOULsOn, nAtiOnAL geOgRAPhic PhOtOgRAPheR

“ In places like Baja, Alaska, Antarctica and the Arctic, the light is just

spectacular at specific times of the day. And on a Photo Expedition, we’re

there for it. We arrange dawn landings to catch early morning light, and

linger at golden hour to make the most of this unique lighting situation.

looking for scenic ops, because we’re on a Photo Expedition, you have

Sven Lindblad, a photographer once and alwaysSven learned the travel business from his father, Lars-Eric Lindblad, who founded Lindblad Travel in 1958 and pioneered expedition travel. Before following in his father’s footsteps, however, he spent formative years in Africa — as a professional photographer. He shot for magazines, worked on documentary films, and published several books with rizzoli. His personal passion for photography is integral to the company’s character. From the beginning, Sven and other photographers aboard captured the essence of our expeditions in pictures. Since 1976, the photos, and later the videos, featured in our brochures and on our website have been shot by the photographers and videographers who work aboard our ships. Sven’s shots — from ongoing visits to Galápagos, Alaska, Antarctica, Baja and more, with his family or with friends — are often featured, proving definitely that once a photographer, always a photographer.

“ It’s phenomenal … and it’s

thanks to Sven’s unique

advocacy that we can be be

out here doing this work and

make these photo ops possible

for our guests.”— RALPh Lee hOPkins, DiRectOR Of

Share & preserve your photos Creating a record of your expedition is an unmatched opportunity for creative self-expression. Using your personal Expedition Photo Journal (see details below) you can stash and share your words and images with the members of your expedition community. Don’t worry if you missed a shot — chances are somebody else got it! And while bandwidth is either unavailable or limited in many places we explore, your Expedition Photo Journal keeps your photo trove safe on your laptop during the voyage — ready to amaze friends, family and fellow photo enthusiasts later through popular social media options like Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. In addition, you can turn your saved images and notes into a beautiful book (at right) that captures the memory forever.

Your Expedition Photo Journal, shown on this screen below, is an exclusive gift for you and your fellow booked guests. Use it to: Meet people on your departure before you go; save and organize your photos & notes on your laptop during the voyage; share & swap photos after the voyage, and stay in touch with your new-found friends.

One-of-a kind photo bookAt your side on deck or in field situations, the National Geographic photographers and certified Photo Instructors aboard provide inspiration, tips and advice gleaned from experience. They also offer supportive critiques and informative on-board presentations.

They’ll help you to take your best photos ever. Then, you’ll have everything you need to create a lasting record of your adventure — a photo book, containing your images, words as text or just captions, and even voyage DErs, if you choose. Making a personalized photo book is an exercise in self-expression that’s easy, rewarding and a wonderful keepsake to share with family and friends.

It all starts with your Expedition Photo Journal, provided to you when you make your reservation. Ask your Expedition Specialist about it when you call.
