Though we were less than an hour away from the hustle and bustle of St. Louis, we found ourselves surrounded in a paradise of lush foliage where the trees and open space seemed to lovingly embrace us. It was a retreat in the truest sense of the word: in this place we felt safe to take a step back from normal life and responsibilities, and leave our “shmutz” at the door. Within the walls of the retreat center, we were able to create for ourselves a home. We brought in blankets, pillows, tablecloths, and serving pieces to decorate our home and transform our space into the “Taj Mahal at Toddhall” to go along with our theme of Indian Jewish culture. We each brought in offerings of the heart – spices and fruits to be used as part of our Indian Jewish celebratory ceremony known as Malida. As each woman brought these offerings forward, some with herbs picked from their own gardens, others with fruit or spices lovingly selected, I realized what a truly incredible moment this was. Within minutes of arriving, we were able to create a community and a home, transforming this space into a place of comfort, safety, and support for this 24-hour period. And as we move through the Days of Awe, we look ahead to the festival of Sukkot, where we again create for ourselves temporary dwelling places. We transform the bare walls of the sukkah into a home where we can eat, sleep, and gather together for food and fellowship. The sukkah is a simple yet sacred place. Though the walls and the ceilings are fragile, the home that we create inside of it is not. The space inside the sukkah is a place of strength and unity, where we gather with family and friends. And just as we were able to do at Toddhall, we take the time to transform our simple structures with offerings from the heart, decorating with fruit, vegetables, paper chains, and the like. There is a tradition established by the Kabbalists of the 16th century to invite in ushpizin, or guests, into our sukkot to eat with us; one per each of the seven nights. Traditionally, these were male biblical figures: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David. In recent years, liberal Jews have added female biblical characters to the list: Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, Miriam, Deborah, Rachel, and Ruth (please note: other sources include different female biblical characters). These individuals traditionally represent different divine attributes that we hope to embody and are able to offer words of wisdom to us as we dine together. This year, I would like to suggest that we add some other guests to the list. October 2014 | vol. xxix no. 2

Just a few weeks ago, in mid-August, a group of women gathered at the Toddhall Retreat Center for a 24-hour period of learning, connecting, and renewing.

The

sukkah is a simple yet sacred place.

CRC Israel Trip Late December, 2015Rabbi Randy will be leading another trip to Israel with CRC members and friends at the end of next year. Right now, the proposed dates are December 20, 2015 - January 1, 2016 although those dates are subject to slight change before final confirmation. If you are interested, please email [email protected]. There will be an informational meeting with a representative from the tour company in mid-November, so stay tuned for more details.

Mother that is at the core of all the goddesses with the Shechinah, the feminine aspect of God. During Sukkot, I would like to suggest that we bring these goddesses back into our temporary dwelling places, putting them into conversation with our traditional sukkah guests. Traditionally, our male guests represent the divine attri-butes of love, restraint, harmony, dominance, empathy, continuity, and sovereign-ty. These goddesses: Saraswati the Wise, Lakshmi the Prosperous, Parvati the Divine Feminine, Kali the Fierce, Durga the Invincible, and Shakti the Great Divine Mother, have the power to deepen our understanding of the traditional attributes that the Rabbis hope our guests will bring to us.

The Rabbis tell us that all of Israel should be able to sit under one sukkah. How is this possible, you ask? It becomes possible when we open our tent wide enough to allow all people with their varying backgrounds and traditions to have a seat at the table. This Sukkot, let us look for ways to bring in new and different ideas which have the capacity to expand and strengthen our traditions. Let us open our sukkot, our shelters of peace, to all who wish to enter, and create with them a home.

B’Ahavah (with love),

Rabbi Deana

A Message from Essie

As the school year begins, I would like to remind you that we make connections in everything that we do, say, practice and refuse. Nachman of Bretzlav was a Hasidic master who lived around the same time as Abraham Lincoln. He taught: “All people reach in three directions. They reach in to find themselves. They reach out to find others. And they reach up to find God. The miracle in the way that God created the universe is that when we grasp in any one of these directions we wind up making contact with all three.”

Live Jewishly with intention, on purpose and with purpose, everyday! Thank you for your commitment to educating our children with the same compassion and joy that CRC brings to our community.Plan to be happy and healthy in the New Year!Shana Tova,Essie

Support Our First Responders on Thanksgiving DayThursday, November 27We are collecting grocery gift cards and non-perishable foods (we are looking for easy snack foods as officers cannot cook at the station) for gift bags to deliver at fire and police stations in the city and county. Please leave the gift cards with Leah at the front desk, and there is a bin in the oneg for the food donations. On Thanksgiving Day morning, we’ll say “thanks” by delivering the baskets. Please meet at CRC no later than 9:45 am to pick up gift bags and addresses of police and fire stations. This is a great opportunity for families and individuals of all ages to do a mitzvah before heading to our Thanksgiving celebrations. RSVP to Mel Goldman at [email protected].

Next Dor Bike Tour of St. Louis Jewish ArchitectureSunday, October 26, 12:30 pmTune up your bicycles and join us for a community bike tour of St. Louis’s Jewish architecture. Seasoned bike tour guide Harold Karabell, of Harold’s Historic Two-Wheeled Tours, will lead a tour of the stunning old synagogues of nearby northside and University City. During the 1800s, Jews from across the world settled in the heart of the city and built some of the finest Jewish synagogues, schools, and hospitals in the country. Though the Jewish community has mostly migrated to University City and West County, many of these beautiful structures endure as part of the architec-tural tapestry of our city. This easy ride is heavy on historical and architectural content, not distance. Meet at CRC’s parking lot at 12:30pm for the 1:00 pm ride. Snacks, water, air, and mechanic will be on site. $5 suggested donation or pay-what-you-wish to benefit Next Dor STL. RSVP to Leah Greenbaum at [email protected]. All are welcome!

University Series ReminderThere will be no University Series in October. The series will resume in November. More information to come later this month.

CRC CELEBRATES GABE FLEISHER’S BAR MITZVAH The congregation is invited to share a very holy moment in the life of the Fleisher family as Gabriel Shine becomes Bar Mitzvah. Please join us for the service and luncheon on Saturday, November 8th starting at 10:00. Gratefully, Rabbi Randy and Amy Fleisher.

Green tip of the MonthInstead of putting your leaves, branch-es, and weeds into plastic bags only to be picked up by trash collectors, consider turning this lawn “waste” into nutrient-rich soil ready for your spring garden! Collecting compost is quite easy and can save money on soil and fertilizer when it comes time to start your garden after the cold season.

Phone banking for Medicaid ExpansionTuesdays in October, 5:30 - 8:30 pm Paraquad, 5240 Oakland Ave. 63110CRC has been working with Jobs With Justice and other coalition partners to pass Medicaid expansion in the Missouri Legislature for the past two legislative sessions. Medicaid expansion will give afforadable health care to 260,000 Missourians, and offer critical resources to the state’s health care infrastucture. We’re gearing up our work for next year’s legislative session now.

We are looking for volunteer phone bankers to call Missouri voters and educate them about Missouri’s oppor-tunity to expand Medicaid. Training will be provided.

To RSVP or get more information, con-tact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 361-1564 or [email protected] or JWJ Organizing Director Richard von Glahn at [email protected] or 314-540-2049.

Social Responsibility ShabbatFriday, October 17, 7:30 pmAs mentioned above, CRC has been hard at work trying to encourage the Missouri legislature to pass Medicaid expansion for the past two years.

The people who fall into the Medicaid gap may surprise you. Approximately 300,000 of our fellow Missourians - three out of four of whom are from working families - are unable to access healthcare because our legislature has failed them. These individuals are cashiers at grocery stores, provide home healthcare for the elderly, or clean up hotel rooms, etc. Some work two part-time jobs so their employers do not offer a health plan. If Missouri chooses to expand Medicaid, the program will reward those who are trying to support

themselves and their families. It is a way to uphold the dignity of work and workers.

Our October Social Responsibility Shabbat speaker has been working tirelessly on the issue of Medicaid expansion.

We are pleased to welcome Donna Pupillo, Executive Director of Deaconess Faith Community Nurse Ministries, who will speak at our October Social Responsibility Shabbat about the urgency of passing Medicaid expansion in Missouri.

In her work as a registered nurse, she has committed to care for low-income adults and children, especially helping them get the health care resources they need. She has been a public health nurse and recently served as a nurse at the drop-in Center for the United Way in Ferguson.

Please be sure and join us to learn how you can play a role in getting Medicaid expansion passed in 2015.

Yom Kippur Swab DriveSt. Louis congregations are stepping up!

CRC, along with all of the other Reform congregations in St. Louis, has partnered with the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism to bring an exciting and unique opportunity to help save lives. On both Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur, we will be holding a swab drive to help collect potential bone marrow donors.

Potential donors will be entered into the bone marrow registry. From the time you join the registry until your 61st birthday, you could be a donor for someone suffering from a life-threatening blood disease and help save their life. Registration is simple. It

requires a quick cheek swab and completion of a consent form. Potential donors must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and in general good health.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Drive Coordinator Rebel Vaenberg at [email protected] or Jennifer Bernstein at [email protected]. Please visit http://www.yomkippurproject.org/ for more information.

Weatherization Project - save the Dates!Wednesday, December 3, 6:00 pm & Saturday, December 6, 12:00 pm - Materials Prep Saturday, December 13, 12:00 - 4:00 pm – South City Sunday, December 14, 12:00 - 4:00 pm – North City As one of Central Reform Congregation’s longest community partnerships, we have been helping weatherize in the Grace Hill neighborhood since 1990. Work with a team of other community volunteers to place plastic on interior windows of select area resident homes to keep our neighbors warm this winter. This year we will focus on elderly residents within the Grace Hill service area.

Last year we added a community garden project in Peace Park, which was a great success. We cleaned and secured the beds for winter so they were ready for spring planting. No special skills are needed, so please bring your friends or family (12 and older) and join us for this worthwhile project.

Contact: Marcy Brodsky, (314) 302-8957 or email at [email protected] to volunteer, for questions, or directions (map will be provided).

Yiskor ServiceThursday, October 18, 8:00 amThe central aspect of this service is sharing a brief memory of the loved ones we come to remember. It becomes a wonderfully moving and emotional service—a rather intimate space so people have a chance to speak about their loved ones. You may remember any loved ones, not just those who died in this past year. A circle of love envelops everyone who attends this service.

Simchat Torah Celebration and Service/Religious School Open House and Consecration

Saturday, October 18, 10:00 amPlease join us for one of the most amazing Jewish experiences you will ever have as we unroll the Torah and celebrate! We will also formally welcome our kindergarten and new students to the CRC Religious School community in a ceremony where they will receive their very own Torah scroll.

We are so excited to announce that the service will also feature a performance by the band Klezundheit!, which has performed at CRC for every Simchat Torah since 1999. Klezundheit! has also performed on KFUO’s radio show “Live from the Garden,” and has played concerts and church services at various locations around St Louis, most memorably a Lutheran Mass with all Klezmer music. They have performed two concerts in Asuncion Paraguay, and will be performing at the international “Music in the Mountains” festival, January 2015 in Posos de Caldas, Brazil. Klezundheit! is directed by Bob Herman, and features Paul Wexler on clarinet, Tom Bruce on trumpet, Paul Huppert on violin, Bob Miller on trombone and Leon Burke, vocals.
