Be careful when clicking on links in emails If you get an email that urges you to click on a link, even if it appears to be from a company you trust – be weary. Hover your mouse over the link to verify that the link is sending you where you think it is. Watch out for small variances in spelling. For instance, someone might send you to “arnazon.com” instead of “amazon.com” because “rn” can easily be mistaken for an “m.” If you are unsure if a link is safe, go directly to the website by searching for the company on Google or typing in the URL. Do not open attachments in emails – Stop and think before opening attachments in any emails, even ones that appear to be from a trusted company. Were you expecting this email? Are you able to verify the content of this email by going to the company’s website instead of opening the attachment? Be careful giving out personal information and verify the authenticity of requests from companies by contacting them directly – If a company asks for your personal information in any form, stop and think. Would they really be asking for this information over the phone or in an email? Go to the company website (not through a link – use Google or type in the URL), call the number listed, and have them verify the request before giving out any information. Set secure passwords – Do not use the same password for every site. If a hacker guesses one, they now have them all. Do your best to set secure passwords that you can still remember. For example, instead of using the password “cookies” use “C0ok!e$.” A combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols make a password harder to guess. Keep your devices updated – Updates usually fix bugs that have been found since the last update to make sure that you are always protected. Be careful when clicking on links in emails – If you get an email that urges you to click on a link, even if it appears to be from a company you trust – be weary.

Do your best to set

secure passwords that you can still remember. For example, instead of using the password “cookies” use “C0ok!e$.” A combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols make a password harder to guess.

A Message from the CEOAs we enter the final quarter of 2019, activities begin to increase for everyone. Fall brings a new school year, new sports calendars, and families begin planning for the upcoming holidays. For Patriot, it’s the end of our 2019 budget and the beginning of our 2020 budget planning season.

In the next few weeks we’ll begin deploying new “SMART ATM’s”. SMART ATM’s allow you to pick your own denominations for cash withdrawals and in time, will allow for

loan payments and additional transactions. Additionally, SMART ATM’s will begin to replace existing ITM’s. While some members have come to love our ITM’s, their costs are

high and member adoption has been slow. And SMART ATM’s are gaining penetration by the largest banks in the country. Patriot is among the first financial institutions to gain access to this newer technology with the STAR Network, our third party ATM driver.

In 2020, Patriot will focus on improving our digital products and services. We anticipate the final plan will enable card control capabilities on your personal computers in eBranch - complimenting last quarter’s card controls add-on to your mobile phones, and improving on-line account opening and lending options. I encourage you to give us feedback and suggestions because membership is important (as owners) your opinions matter.

Finally, I’d like to discuss the pace of change. Patriot understands that change isn’t without hiccups. We continue to focus on better ways to implement changes in order to limit inconveniences for our members. Yet everyone understands that change remains the only constant. While change seems to be accelerating, cyber security threats continue to evolve. Accordingly, Patriot must remain vigilant. Recently we turned off most mag-strip transactions for purchases where the card is present; relying on EMV chip technology. EMV technology has significantly reduced petty fraud and counterfeit cards across the world. But e-commerce sales are defined by purchases where the card isn’t present, where fraud trends are increasing. Accordingly, Patriot added 3D Secure protection and we continue to work towards machine learning and artificial intelligence security, as these new technologies become available. Patriot wants members to know that protecting your identity and financial transactions (however you choose to transact your business) is very important to us!

Thank you and have a blessed Thanksgiving and joyous Christmas.

Brad R. Warner, President & CEO Patriot Federal Credit Union

ATM Upgrades:As communicated in our previous newsletter, in an effort to provide a seamless member experience, we will begin upgrading our ATMs in a phased manner later this fall. This may result in temporary outages to various ATMs. The following machines are scheduled for October upgrades:

• Wayne Avenue lobby: Effective October 5, the ATM/Interactive Teller Machine (ITM) in the Wayne Avenue branch vestibule will be removed. After that date please visit the Wayne Avenue lobby or drive thru for teller services during regular business hours. For ATM services, please visit the ATMs in the Wayne Ave drive thru.

• Lincoln Way East: Both existing ATM/ITMs will be removed effective October 7. A new, upgraded Smart ATM will replace one of the old ATM/ITMs on October 7. The other machine will be replaced on October 22. These Smart ATMs will offer upgraded** ATM services, but will not offer teller services. For teller services, please visit the lobby or the new drive thru window, which will be operational beginning October 7, during regular business hours (i.e., Monday – Friday: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM and Saturday: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM)

We regret any inconvenience due to these transitions and look forward to continuing to serve you. Please visit https://www.patriotfcu.org/atm-upgrades to learn more about ATM upgrades in your area.

** The new Smart ATMs will have the ability to dispense denominations of your choice (i.e., $5, $10, and $20), as well as accept member deposits.

Liberty Mutual Get Your Home Ready for Winter, Even If You’re Not

As winter approaches, it’s time to make sure that your home is protected from the cold, and that your heating system and fireplace are prepped and primed to keep you cozy.

WindowsSealing your windows is a good way to improve your heating efficiency and to make sure you’ll stay warm. It’s advisable to do this before freezing temperatures hit, as ice-cold windows are tougher to seal properly. Using window seals in conjunction with layered curtains helps keep your home insulated for optimal comfort. Draft snakes are long pillows that block cold air and also help insulate doors and windows.

FireplaceHiring a chimney sweep can ensure that your fireplace is ready to go. In addition to clearing out soot, they will also check for damage and should also change the chimney cap in order to prevent rain and snow, birds, squirrels or anything else from entering.

FurnaceNothing will give you the winter blues like turning on your furnace only to find it isn’t working. To prep your furnace, first check and change your filter. Next, anything stored near the furnace or on or in front of air ducts and return vents may be a fire hazard or block air circulation, and should be removed. Lastly, you may need to contact your gas or oil provider for a furnace refill.

RadiatorsIf your home is heated by hot-water radiators, you should bleed the valves by opening them until water starts to appear and then closing them again. This will release trapped air and let hot water heat the radiator and home.
