Summary of the project This project purpose is to improve and promote sustainable forest management for a range of ecosystem services through the medium of FSC certification ForCES (Forest Certification for Ecosystem Services) project is supported by GEF (Global Environment Facility) with facilitation from UNEP, implemented by FSC and partners in Chile, Vietnam, Nepal, and Indonesia. Started in 2011 will run to 2015. .

Why it matters?

Page 6: Expanding FSC Certification at Landscape Level through incorporating additional ecosystem services

26 5 8 - 6

Assumption that human consumption for natural forest is reducing ecosystem services such as soil and water.

Thus, Sustainable Forest Management providing higher ES values than non-sustainable forest management. ForCES as additional/ expansion for FSC certification Appreciation for biodiversity and forest services are low.

Expectation: Recommendation for FSC to have set of ES

certification system that is credible, verifiable, applicable for even smallholders, replicable to

other area in the world.

Actions to take: FSC national standard development lead by LEI, conduct market analysis to see “willingness to pay” from potential PES buyer/ user, define M & E methodology for long term, participatory process and activities on the ground, create suitable PES business model, to test FSC PES standard draft in pilot site by Certification Body by end of project

Payment for Ecosystem Service 100%

Operational 25%

Nature and local communities

75%

Restoration 45%

Economic 19%

Organization 11%

Restoration activity which conducted in upstream should has clear parameters, thus impacting positively on the quality and water debit/flow

ACTIVITIES in PILOT SITE 1: Lombok

DONE Science based analysis on hydrology and watershed planning

Create watershed monitoring and evaluation planning with community through PES protocol

Review of FSC standard related to water

Create action plan for FSC certification

FSC pre-assessment Update spatial map each year

Socialization and pre-FPIC process

Participatory mapping development with community to create spatial delineation

Film documentary on “Water Service” in Lombok

Market analysis (water service)

What we seek in water service: In Lombok, mechanism of payment for ES is already running. Science-based verification to prove the impact of reforestation activities on the quality and flow of water (rivers and springs) Improving monitoring & evaluation methodology through PES protocol To help expanding existing paid water services to wider area in Lombok where ForCES hopefully can shorthened up the process Partnership with IMP (Multi Stakeholders Institution), PDAM (State Owned Water Company), Forestry Service, BPDAS (Watershed Management Office), local government Prepare local community for FSC certification assessment

ACTIVITIES in PILOT SITE 2: Kapuas Hulu Corridor

DONE Science based analysis on water quality, orangutan, forest cover, ecotourism

Create biodiversity and eco-tourism monitoring and evaluation planning with community

Review of FSC standard related to biodiversity and water

Participatory mapping

Socialization of the project in multi level (government, community, other NGOs)

What we seek in eco-tourism: Improving existing eco-tourism that has been running since 2010 Collecting data on biodiversity (orangutan, key/endemic fish species), hydrology and tourism Partnership with forestry service, national park authority office, tour operator, local government Prepare local community for FSC certification assessment

PILOT SITE 3: PT. Ratah Timber, East Kalimantan (95,000 Ha)

Page 20: Expanding FSC Certification at Landscape Level through incorporating additional ecosystem services

What we seek in biodiversity & carbon: Help Ratah Timber maintain their FSC certificate and implementation RIL (Reduced Impact Logging) The assumption that Ratah has higher carbon sequestrian and biodiversity value compared to the non-sustainable FMU Working with Kyoto University to conduct biodiversity and carbon assessment
