Commencement Message from President Nazarian
Members of the Class of 2006:
You may have heard it said that "when it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who LET it happen, those who MAKE it happen, and those who
WONDER what happened."
As soon to be graduates of Rhode Island COllege, I am confident that you will be among the group who MAKE it happen. Your accomplishments during the time that you have spent with us indicate a promising future for you and, by extension, for the world we
share.
Your success is an affirmation of the guidance, encouragement, and nurturing of so many who believe in you: including faculty and staff at the college, as well as your family and
friends who have supported you along the way. These are people who have served as your mentors. Mentors are not always the ones in the limelight, yet we should always take the opportunity to recognize their influence on our lives. One of the more notable
mentors of the 20th century was a man by the name of Benjamin Elijah Mays.
An African-American, born in 1895 in South Carolina to parents who were tenant farmers, and the youngest of eight children, Mays rose above the obstacles he faced to
accomplish many remarkable things. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Bates College, earned his masters and doctorate at the University of Chicago, and became an
ordained minister. He was a college professor, a dean, and served as president of Morehouse College for 27 years. It was during his presidency at Morehouse that he became a mentor to a young man named Martin Luther King, Jr. and, after King's
assassination, it was Mays who delivered the eulogy.
Benjamin Elijah Mays held a compelling belief that each person's life is a mission. He stated it this way (and I quote): "Every man and woman is born into the world to do
something unique and something distinctive, and if he or she does not do it, it will never be done." Let me repeat that: "Every man and woman is born into the world to do
something unique and something distinctive, and if he or she does not do it, it will never be done."
It is a powerful message, and an appropriate one given the milestone you are about to reach. In this graduation season, and for all the days to come, may that thought inspire
you to continue to do your very best to bring about positive change for humanity. That is my hope for the Class of 2006.

Deborah and Caroline Francis
Graduation Day was special for this mother and daughter as they each walked across the stage as part of the Rhode Island College Class of 2006!
"There is no future, there is no past, I live this moment as my last. ... ''
![Page 100: Exodus 2006 (Yearbook)](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102615/57906fd81a28ab68749ab8f4/html5/thumbnails/100.jpg)
My name is Caroline Francis, and I'd like to introduce you to someone else. That lovely lady over there is my mom. Deborah Francis, my mother, graduated on May 20, 2006. She received her Bachelor's degree in Art History. I too, graduated that day with my Bachelor's degree. My mom has worked for twelve years at this college, often one class at a time, as she balanced the rest of her life with her education. There was never a good time at which my mom could start such a task of going back to school, and there was certainly nothing about her life that made it
easy to return. But she was very motivated. I'd like to share with you for just a few brief moments some of the memories I have and lessons I've learned because of my mom over these past twelve years in which she has attended Rhode Island College. And maybe this will remind
some of you of some experiences you've had, and some people you know . •
I remember attending classes once in a while with my mom a long time ago in the late afternoons after my school day, or on a Saturday morning. I remember computer class (one she
was less than fond of), philosophy class (in which my mom successfully encouraged the professor to perform one of his chants for me), summer geography class (where I found myself
on a boat, at a museum, and, much to the surprise of us all, actually consuming a raw oyster straight out of the water!), and then there was psychology class (in which the professor allowed me to take the exam with the rest of the students-/ was probably about 11 at the time). I have
many fond memories of joining my mom out of convenience or sheer fun, on many of her course excursions and many of her average class days over the years. I was given the opportunity,
before I even entered college, to be welcomed into many different classes with her, and learn so many wonderful things about so many different topics, on the sea, in the classroom, and in
various locations around Rhode Island . •
I think my mother can remind many of us through her example, that education is part of a lifelong discovery of everything around us. She has given me opportunities to learn so much on a wide breadth of subjects, and enjoy myself while being there. She has brought me to classes
that were typically small and close-knit at an institution where you soon get to know each other's names, and call your professors at home. But most importantly, my mom can give many of us the greatest gift: a new lesson in the value of perspective. Greatly through her example I have come to realize over these past twelve years that a resume means little, but the memories and
wisdom you gain over your lifetime mean much. Rhode Island College has served my mother's life and mine so very well .
• In life, there are a world of things you can accomplish, but there are only so many things which are important to do. Taking the initiative to enrich your life is one thing, but you must also have
the perspective to know that living life with the ones you love is just as important. In fact, the future doesn't seem strange anymore; I know, and I truly hope all of you do too, that life is too short to scramble around toward accomplishments that make us famous, but that it is just long enough to live it with motivation and happiness, and savor the quiet success of such simple and
important achievements . •
Congratulations to each and every one of you and I wish all of you all the happiness that life can bring. And for you mom, thank you, and congratulations on receiving your Bachelor of Arts
degree in Art History after such a wonderful journey. You should be so very proud of yourself, I know I am.

Unless you have been on a RIC Outdoor Adventure Club trip, it's hard to fully explain how fantastic they've been. The 1st trip this year was the Storgy award winning annual ski trip to
Sugarloaf ski resort in Maine. It was a 5 day long vacation in January where we enjoyed fresh powder, perfect weather, friends and good times. Sixty people attended this very affordable ski
trip and we're happy to report that no one lost any limbs, kissed any trees at 60 mph or was eaten by the abominable snowman! For the next trip, we traveled to North Country Rivers in
Bingham, ME for some extreme white water rafting on the Kennebec River and some monster mosquitoes. The rainy weather certainly didnt put a damper on this 3 day camping trip. The
majority of those who participated had never rafted before but found themselves in the middle of class IV rapids and loved it! The final trip the OAC hosted this year was the trip to Martha's
Vineyard. We spent the 1st day biking around the beautiful island and the second enjoying water sports on the beach. And a special thanks to our advisor, John Taylor, for his
encouragement and support.
