Rediscover a wide array of drawing and painting mediums with A6 founder Pat Clark. Each week students will explore a new medium, then complete an art assignment to review in the following class. “Back to Basics” will cover different forms of charcoal in Week One, colored pencils and graphite in Week Two, and mixed media (watercolor, clayboard, and ink) in Week Three. Drawing is the fulcrum for all of types of fine art. This class will introduce the basic principles of drawing (color, composition, light source, line quality) through different drawing mediums (graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, ink, etc.). Learn how to set lead type

Intro to LetterpressSat, Mar 24-Apr 7, 1-4 pm

If you have heard about letterpress but are unsure what it is or how it works, this class will allow you to peer inside the rich history and engaging techniques of letterpress printing. This class introduces the process, the materials, the machines, and the satisfaction of printing by hand on several tabletop platen presses. Participants will learn the basics of setting type using A6’s collection of lead type and decorative ornaments—as well as inking, locking up and pulling a print.

Take letterpress to the next level

Miniature Letterpress BookSun, Apr 22-6, 1-4 pm

In this workshop you’ll learn how to construct a hardcover accordion-style book using both photopolymer plates and lead type set. Students will be guided through the process of preparing an accordion text block as well as assembling fully covered boards. This class introduces basic book binding concepts including measuring, scoring and tipping folios. We will also focus typesetting and letterpress printing on several tabletop platen presses.

Each process connects to a different creative pursuit, be it drawing, painting or collage. Experience the thrill of pulling prints by hand and by press. Instructor: Dawn Boone


Intro to LinocutTues, Mar 17-May 1, 4-7 pm

Linoleum cut printmaking is a great way to explore printmaking! In this class, we’ll design and carve a 12” x 12” linoleum block. We will begin with a simple landscape as a subject focusing on composition, with the option of adding more intricate pattern. We will ink up the blocks and make at least one print each in black ink only. This will require the maker to think about the process as subtractive, and to plan accordingly. No experience necessary. Woodcut CollagraphSat & Sun, Feb 10 & 11, 10-3 pm

Come get curious about this unlikely pairing and how the two printmaking techniques can inform each other and offer endless composition and texture possibilities. While each technique stands firmly on its own, the play of finding connections in layering different methods with unique line qualities is a fun image and idea generating experience. Pamphlet PocketbooksTues, Mar 20, 4-7 pm

Learn foundational skills in the art of bookmaking and take home a completed project! This fun class is a great skill builder and helps you tap your own unique style and creativity. Practice the pamphlet stitch, learn how to construct covers and make functional pockets, and work with book cloth. Bring old prints or interesting papers, or use what’s supplied. Create beautiful boxes to house your handmade books or other objects in this start-to-finish project. This two-day workshop expands on basic bookmaking skills, using book board, book cloth, decorative paper and text blocks. Create a hardcover book with a sewn binding, then build a box that fits your book. Playing the Concertina with Ann KresgeSat & Sun/Feb 17 & 18/10-4 pm

In book arts, the concertina is a pleated spine to which we attach pages. Like a mini accordion, the concertina provides the book artist with many options for page placement and book construction. The result is a range of creative, 3-dimensional book forms. In this two-day, hands-on workshop, students will learn folding , gluing, design and binding techniques. We’ll make several concertina-based books including flag and tunnel books. This class emphasizes individual creative solutions. Ann Kresge will also present her latest concertina book, Sacred Spaces. All levels of experience welcome.

Chine Collé with Anna McKeeWed & Thu, Feb 28 & Mar 1, 10-2 pm

Chine collé achieves fine print detail attainable on delicate surfaces with the structural support of heavier rag paper. It can also be used to add secondary images printed or transferred onto the chine collé paper.

This two-day workshop explores the traditional and experimental potential of chine collé techniques. Anna will demonstrate several methods to obtain a seamless lamination of washi papers or lightweight fabric onto rag paper in the final print. This class provides extensive hands-on exploration of these techniques, printing with your own intaglio and relief plates. Pre-requisite: Experience in intaglio and relief printmaking.

Artist Book as Graphic Novel with Tuula MoilanenPrintmaker and book artist Tuula Moilanen is widely known as an expert in Japanese woodblock printing (mokuhanga) and traditional papermaking and also works as a writer, graphic designer and illustrator. Small Plates, Big Prints with Sukha WorobMon-Wed, Mar 12-14, 10-2 pm

Create a large “printstillation” with printmaker Sukha Worob. Carve small abstract or representational lino carvings that fit into a group theme. Print your plates in a multiple fashion to create large-scale collaborative prints with your classmates. This class will change your view of printmaking as a creative medium outside of the constructs of traditional editioned works.



Portland Printmaker

Advanced Monotype with Tracy LeagjeldFri-Sun, Apr 13-15, 10-2 pm

Experiment printing on board using wax paper as our “plate” and layering with acrylic paints and printing inks. Printing with oil based inks on top of an acrylic under painting allows for rich color saturated monotypes. Students will start with a reference drawing done on newsprint. The drawing is then transferred to the board after which the board is painted with the acrylic under painting using simple bold colors and shapes. Next the wax paper “plate” is inked in a painterly style and printed onto the board using a hand printing technique.

“Print the Walls” School ProgramApril 9-May 31, 2018 For Grades 2 and up

Students cover Bend Art Center’s white gallery walls (or your school’s walls!) with layers of ink in this special exhibit program. Using special rollers carved by contemporary printmaker Sukha Worob, students create a “prinstillation” by rolling designs inked with the four process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). After a tour of Sukha’s exhibit, “Zamenhof’s Trials,” students learn about the science of color perception and then experiment with optical color mixing in a specially-designed art activity.

Our first series explores one of history’s most dramatic periods of art: the Baroque. Each week, we’ll focus on a different artist, exploring his or her language of color, composition, mood, and symbolism—and learn why these works were created. Then we’ll head into the A6 Print Studio to discover how these artists worked! We’ll explore techniques used by each master, from chiaroscuro to the camera obscura. Fresh with inspiration, kids will have extended studio time to create their own work.

Lorna served as a member of the British Open University Humanities faculty at the University of Maryland for 15 years. A published poet, Lorna facilitates One Breath Poets (a local haiku poetry group) and is an A6 Artist Member.

Alyson Belcher: Ice PortalsOn Display: January 5-28, 2018 Opening Reception: Fri, Jan 5, 5-9 pm Art Talk: Tue, Jan 9, 6 pm

Photographer Alyson Belcher recorded the freeze and thaw of ice formations during the unusually cold winter of 2017 in Bend, Oregon. These studies read as abstract landscapes and challenge our sense of scale. Lines, shapes and textures combine with the mysterious qualities of light and shadow to create a confusing space that is fragile and fleeting. Based in Oregon and California, Belcher is a full-time faculty member of the School of Photography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her varied oeuvre reflects an overarching interest in subjects that change slowly over time.

Ann Kresge: Gathering SpacesConstructed on site at Bend Art Center, “Gathering Spaces” combines artist book and installation by Salem, Oregon book artist Ann Kresge. Kresge’s work explores the sacred geometries and sacred sites throughout world traditions.

Jeanette Small: ConvergenceA6 Artist Member Jeanette Small uses images of bees, honeycomb and cathedrals to reference the collaborative power of the hive. These mixed-media works on paper combine etching, linocut, chine collé, painting and stenciling and infuse elements of architecture, biology and technology. In this layered visual environment, Small presents contemplative female figures as a primary creative force.

March Glacier: Persistent Ice in Motion— New Work by Anna McKeeOn Display: March 2-April 1, 2018 Opening Reception: Fri, Mar 2, 5-9 pm Art Talk: Sat, Mar 3, 5 pm

Seattle artist Anna McKee explores ice landscapes with a series focused on Alpine glaciers in the Pacific Northwest. These portraits celebrate the beauty of these unique environments, and provide an outlet to contemplate change and grief associated with loss. Sequenced drawings explore future imagined landscape with shrinking ice. Other drawings focus on ice falls and crevasses within a glacier. Using both realistic renderings, and distorted abstractions, McKee’s work captures both a static point in time, as well as the dynamic nature of these changing masses of ice.

Sukha Worob’s interactive installation explores the structure of communication, social connectedness, and belonging. Worob carves designs and images into rollers, which he uses to create works on paper and “printstillations” which break down the traditional gallery space. Visitors are encouraged to pick up a roller and ink the gallery walls in what the artist hopes will create a powerful shared experience. Through this combination of interactivity and physicality, Worob’s exhibit sets the stage for genuine interaction among participants and a sense of belonging.

As part of our Visiting Artist Series, Worob will lead a workshop, “Small Plates, Big Prints” in March. See page 7 for details.
