EXHIBIT DESIGN COMPETITION
REGISTER: 2/19 | SUBMIT 3/12 CALL FOR ENTRIES 2018 2X8 STUDENT EXHIBITION DESIGN COMPETITION
THE AIA LOS ANGELES CHAPTER AND ITS ACADEMIC OUTREACH COMMITTEE invite California architecture and design professors and architecture professionals to submit concepts for the 2018 2x8 Student Exhibition Design.
The announced winner will build and execute their design at the 2018 2x8 student show scheduled to open on May 22nd. The location is a pedestrian street in the Helms Bakery District at: 3270-3250 Helms Avenue, Culver City, CA 90232
ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to current faculty or staff (adjunct and part-time faculty are eligible as well) of architecture and/or design programs and to all architects/designers in California.
BACKGROUND: 2x8 is a unique annual exhibition & scholarship program showcasing exemplary student work from architecture & design institutions throughout California. Celebrating the state’s unequaled diversity in pedagogical directions, each of the participating academic programs select two projects that epitomize their core vision. As many as 16 schools participate in the annual show.
DESIGN CHALLENGE: The exhibition will showcase up to 32 student projects displayed on an installation within a highly trafficked outdoor public space for about a month. Student work may be displayed in any fashion (printed boards, digital media, etc) and student submission requirements shall be made clear as part of the exhibition design. Proposals are encouraged to address concerns about the ecological impact of their materials, methods, and waste. At the end of the show the location must be returned to the same condition as it was found, so deconstruction and possible re-use should be considered as part of the exhibit design as well.
The exhibition design should be flexible as the number of participating school entries may vary. The total exhibition construction cost—including showgraphics, printing/displaying of student work, and exhibition dismantling—should not exceed $10,000. Please keep in mind that the AIA|LA is a not-for-profit organization, and all fundraising efforts made for the annual 2x8exhibition are intended to be returned to the students as scholarships. Ultimately, the AIA|LA supports teaming with a contractor for construction and budgetary reasons.
SUBMISSION DETAILS: Entry registration is due to AIA|LA no later than Monday, February 19, 2018. Please submit a $25 entrance fee payable to AIA LA with the registration form to: [email protected].
Final entry sketches may be submitted no later than Monday, March 12, 2018.Submission materials shall include a floor plan, 3D drawing(s), key details, and any other sketches to clearly describe the design. A detailedconstruction cost estimate shall also be included. Final entries are to besubmitted in compressed PDF format (<20mb) and emailed to:[email protected]
The 2x8 Committee will review, select, and announce the winning submission on Friday, March 23, 2018
.
Entrants shall make themselves available for a brief interview to presenttheir concept and respond to requests for clarification between March 12thand 23rd. Execution of the design will begin immediately after the winner’sannouncement and will continue until the opening of the show in late May2018 (Tue May 22nd is targeted, but exact date may vary based on siterestrictions). The winner must be available to attend (at least virtually) 2x8 committee meetings and any additional time required to implement the exhibition design.
