A Level Courses (Old Syllabus) 2. A Level Courses (H1/H2/H3 Syllabus) 3. AO/O Level Courses 4. Courses from Local Polytechnics 5. SAT 6. International Baccalaureate 7. NUS High School Exemptions for freshmen are normally granted by the Dean's Office prior to the commencement of SMU studies. Depending on the grades attained, students holding the same qualifications may be granted different exemptions. The total number of exemptions that may be granted to any student is capped at 6 course units. Further, the total number of exemptions that may be granted to any student in the area of General Education is capped at 3 course units. The exemption policy for students with GCE A/AO/O Level, students with diploma from a polytechnic in Singapore as well as students with SAT/IB Diploma/NUS High School Diploma is indicated below. Exemptions for students with other types of qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Students who do not wish to accept the exemptions granted will have to note that the decision cannot be reversed once they enroll for the course. If the grade obtained for the course is not ideal or if the student lost interest halfway, any request for course drop will not be approved. The grade obtained will count towards the overall GPA. Exemption for Internship - partial or full - may be granted to polytechnic students (only) if they have completed a relevant business attachment during their polytechnic study. Such exemptions are not automatically granted. Polytechnic students should submit a copy of their internship certificate as well as supporting documents on the job scope to the Dean's Office for evaluation. No exemption for Community Service would be granted. (Note: SIS and SOL do NOT grant exemption for Internship). Note for LLB only: In view that the AY2018-19 LLB curriculum requires students to take only one GE, no GE exemption can be granted to LLB single degree students. LLB double degree students should be given exemptions for those courses under their secondary degree, if they meet the exemption criteria. Any GE exemption granted would be removed if the students were to withdraw from the double degree programme. LAW106 Legal Research & Writing is deemed equivalent to WRIT001 Programme in Writing and Reasoning. Therefore, LLB students will not be required to take WRIT001 even if they do not meet the minimum grade for General Paper (or minimum score for SAT I - Critical Reading and Writing) because they are substituting it with LAW106. LLB students who subsequently transfer to another programme will be granted an exemption for WRIT001 Programme in Writing and Reasoning if they have passed LAW106 Legal Research & Writing. Note for SUTD-SMU only: Exemptions based on pre-university grades will not be relevant to SUTD-SMU students in view that the grades of equivalent courses taken at SUTD will be transferred towards SMU requirements.
