All Year 12 students have studiously been preparing for their trial examinations, we wish them all

well and I am sure that the preparation, hard work and commitment demonstrated by so many will

result in pleasing trial examination outcomes.

Social Networking

As a follow up to our recent workshop for parents on the use of social media websites and apps I have included in this newsletter a fact sheet from www.thinkuknow.org.au. This week the fact sheet details information about instagram, others will follow in future newsletters. As always we are reminding students of the importance of the responsible and respectful use of all

social media and of the digital footprint that they are creating.

Creative and Performing Arts

The opportunities for student involvement in CAPA at Woonona High are impressive. The musical production is well underway,

20 Year 9 and 10 students are exploring their creativity in the development of an opera production, Year 9 and 10 drama

students have been invited to perform at the South Coast Drama festival, the junior school band and Community of Schools

band continue to rehearse and perform weekly, individual students are taking the opportunity to have individual tuition in a

range of musical instruments, the “Boomerangs” were invited to sing at the Illawarra Schools Indigenous Reconciliation

morning tea, public speaking and debating students are engaged in a number of local and state competitions and 20 primary

school students are engaged weekly in the Community of Schools Visual Arts after school tuition program.

All are wonderful opportunities and experiences for our students, thank you to the CAPA staff who continually provide an

array of quality learning programs and initiatives.

CoS VISUAL ART DAY

On Tuesday 2 June, students from our Community of Schools feeder primary schools attended our Visual Arts Day. As with

all of Woonona High School’s Community of Schools events, the day was implemented to continue to allow primary students

to engage and become familiar with their future high school surroundings and to build positive connections with their peers.

Those students who attended the day were treated to some of the skills and practical activities of the Stage 4 Visual Arts curriculum. The students started the day by learning about pattern and then coming up with a scratchboard design. They then did a series of ink prints of their foam board. The afternoon was spent with Mrs Armstrong building clay "angry birds" or fish. These were fired then painted later in the day by the students.

Thanks to the students that attended for their enthusiastic attitude on the day and a big thank you to Mrs Armstrong and Mr Hoole (WHS Visual Arts Teachers) for coming up with some engaging and challenging art activities.

As Mr Hoole said it was a “very productive, very messy and very energetic day”.

UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG’S UNIque EXPERIENCE DAY 2015

On Thursday the 11th of June, 38 Year 10 students boarded the bus bound for the University of Wollongong (UOW) to attend

the 2015 UNIque Experience Day. The students attended ‘Taster Sessions’ which were actual, ‘real’ university lectures.

I was able to attend lectures on Teaching and Social Science. The Social Science lecture explored negative effects of

globalisation while the teaching lecture looked into ways teachers can help students excel at school.

Lunch was on the McKinnon Building front lawn and it had the ‘real’ feel of a university experience. All students also had a

campus tour checking out the facilities of Arts, Sciences, Early Childhood Learning and more. We also saw the on campus uni

-bar and all the other commercial outlets that are available at UOW.

The day concluded with a goal setting session. Students set three goals and put them into a letter that will be delivered to us

in one year’s time.

Overall the day was informative and helped many of us resolve to do well in our senior years and gain entry to university.

Thank you to Mr Chamberlain and Mr Zubovic for taking us as well as all the mentors, academics and various UOW staff that

made the event possible.

SRC ELEVATE LEADERSHIP DAY

On the 11 June our Year 11 SRC members

travelled to Wollongong University to participate

in the young leaders forum known as “Elevate”.

On the day we learnt about different leadership

styles and we heard from Brendan Newton who

holds the record for the biggest wave ridden on a

Body Board. We heard about his life and how he

learnt about becoming a leader and the struggles

he has faced in life. The aim of Elevate is to

enrich our own personal leadership skills.

Jaime Carter said: “It was a fantastic day and we

learnt a lot about our own leadership styles”.

Taylah Carter said: “Can’t wait for the next day”.

All in all it was a great day and a great time, we

all look forward to going back again in August

and November to catch up with the new people we have met.

"BEANIE AND SCARF DAY” RAISES FUNDS FOR THE HOMELESS IN THE ILLAWARRA…………

On Friday 12 June, the SRC held a beanie and scarf day to raise funds for the Homeless in the Illawarra. Students wore an

array of beanies and scarves to get into the spirit of the day.

All funds raised were donated to the Wollongong Homeless Hub.

The Wollongong Homeless Hub provides services to the people without accommodation and offers a range of services.

Clients are able to access multiple agencies from a single point. Computers, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones are

offered free of charge to people accessing services. Community engagement officers are available for support and other

support services are also available to clients.

Well done to the SRC and Elleigh Price our School captain for organising the day!"



CORRIMAL ROTARY 'THANK YOU' DINNER………………………………………………………………………..

Dylan Fildes and Donevan Moss attended the Corrimal Rotary dinner meeting on the evening of Wednesday 10th June, to

speak about their experiences at MUNA, the Model United Nations Assembly held at Nan Tien Temple last month.

Dylan, Donevan and Akira Groben had been sponsored by the Corrimal Rotary to attend this very educational and eye -

opening event. Dylan and Donevan took the opportunity to thank the Corrimal Rotary Club for their support, and both

spoke about their experiences on the day. It was great to see the boys reflect on what they had learnt about world affairs

and international politics as a result of this opportunity.……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Our students spoke very well on the evening and impressed the Rotarians with their maturity and interest in current affairs.

They were also very interested to listen to a guest speaker from Nepal talking about the reconstruction effort after the

earthquake, and learning about all the volunteering done by Rotary in the community. Our very own French exchange

student, Mathilde Huguerre, was also at the dinner feeling very sad that she has to go home to France soon.

Thank you to Donevan's mum, Mrs Rhonda Moss, for attending the dinner; and a huge thank you to the Rotary Club of

GARUWANDA As a continuous commitment to Reconciliation Week, the

Northern Illawarra schooling area nominates several

students to recognise and celebrate their continued

achievements. Students can be recognised in any area

including academic achievement, academic excellence,

excellence in a particular subject/sport/talent, continued

effort in school and many other areas.…..………………….…..

This year saw Teya Storm of Year 12 recognised for her

consistent commitment to her education, particularly in the

areas of attendance and engagement. With 100% attendance

at school and consistently achieving 'Always' on her

monitoring cards, Teya is a quiet achiever who never big-

notes herself but always does the right thing. She gives the

acknowledgement of country at school assemblies and other

formal events, and has been active in the community in areas

such as soccer, gymnastics and cheer-leading.…………………..

It is wonderful to see that Teya's poster will be displayed and

will travel around schools in the region to act as a role model

for other Aboriginal students. Teya will be formally

recognised at events during NAIDOC week and we know she

will represent our school with pride.

NEPAL FUNDRAISER

Nepal was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25 followed by a major after shock of magnitude 7.3 on May 12. The

results have been heart breaking with over 8 500 people killed, more than 19 000 injured, nearly 500 000 houses destroyed,

250 000 houses damaged and 6 000 schools destroyed which means nearly 1 000 000 children can’t return to school. In total 8

million people have been affected.

Sambhav Nepal is a Nepal based charity which has been active for

many years in rural parts Gorka, close to the epicentre. They

need our help and one of the areas we have decided to support is

the rebuilding of schools.

On Thursday 18 June the Ms Mete (Food Technology Assistant) is

organising to hold the following fundraiser:


COMMUNITY OF SCHOOLS BAND PROGRAM

The Woonona Community of Schools Band Program has been running successfully since 2012 and this year we have 20 students from Russell Vale and Woonona Primary Schools participating. Each Wednesday afternoon during sport time, these students come to Woonona High School to learn an instrument and rehearse as a band. Our senior music students and outside instrumental tutors provide small group instruction on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass and drums.

The primary students have only been playing their instruments since Week 5 in Term 1 but we are already rehearsing as a band and they are sounding great. We also run a Junior Band on Tuesday mornings from 7:30-8:30am for high school and primary school students who have been playing for at least a year. Many of our junior band students also attend the Primary Band rehearsals on Wednesdays to help our tutors.

I would like to thank all of our Woonona High School students who assist with this program each week and to congratulate our primary band for their progress so far. The Primary and Junior Bands will be performing later in the year – details to come.

We also run a tuition program for instrumental and vocal lessons before and after school and we currently offer guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. All lessons are conducted by qualified music teachers in the Music Rooms at Woonona High School. Private lessons cost $20 per half hour and partner lessons cost $10 per half hour.

WOTOPERA PROGRAM

In 2015, we are proud to be taking part in the WotOpera program with three other Wollongong High Schools. WotOpera unlocks the creative potential of young people as 20 students from each school write a short opera to be performed at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 25th June at 7pm. The students will participate in four one-day workshops to produce their own stories, compose music and design and paint their own sets from Week 6-9 in Term 2, commencing on Thursday 28th May.

During Week 10, students will be involved in rehearsals during Thursday before performing in the evening concert with the other schools at the IPAC at 7pm. Our Year 9 and 10 performing arts students are thoroughly enjoying the program and we hope you will come along to the performance. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for concessions. UNPLUGGED 16

On Tuesday 23rd June Woonona High School will hold its 16th Unplugged Concert. These concerts have been running since 2010 and were initially designed to raise money to purchase a grand piano for the Hall. After purchasing the piano in 2011, the concerts have continued to be a strong tradition with many talented students of all ages performing great live music once a term. A

All money raised now goes to the maintenance of the piano and the purchase of other equipment for music performance.

Tickets are $5 for kids, $10 for adults and $25 for a family of 4. They are available to purchase on the night.

The concert is at 7pm in the Hall. We hope to see you there!

THE WIZ – MUSICAL PRODUCTION

Dress rehearsals have now begun for our school production of “The Wiz” and the show promises to be a great night of entertainment including singing, acting, dancing, a live band and circus performers, along with a crew of technical assistants and stage hands. Performances will be held during Week 1 of Term 3, on Wednesday 15 th July and Thursday 16th July at 7pm. Tickets will be available to purchase later this term. The show follows the story of The Wizard of Oz with funky Motown music and quirky characters. The show was a hit on Broadway in the 70s and the movie starred Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. Come along for a great night of live entertainment.

OPEN BOYS AND GIRLS OZTAG

On the 19 May Woonona High School Oztag teams competed in the Illawarra Open Boys and Girls Oztag

competition.

Both teams played 8 games each and they both made the finals rounds. Both the boys and girls teams

went down 2-0 in the final for the whole of the Illawarra!.........................................................................

It was an extremely good effort on the part of both teams and I am extremely proud of them. They

played tough games even having Year 8/9 girls playing in the Year 11/12 girls team and Year 9/10 boys

playing into he Year 11/12 boys team. Congratulations to all team members.


U13’s RUGBY LEAGUE Year 7 Woonona High School student Stuart Logan and the “Illawarriors” under 13 Rugby representative

side contested the Junior Country Rugby Championships at Armidale last weekend.

On Saturday the boys braved the freezing conditions to win all three pool games without a point being

scored against them.……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear but it was only three degrees. This however didn’t slow the

lads as they played strong and determined rugby to beat mid north coast in the major semi final 19-15.

It was a bruising game and when the final was played in the afternoon (now 13 degrees thank

goodness) the bumps and knocks had taken their toll over the 2 day carnival and they succumbed 12-5

to Hunter in the grand final.…………

The boys played excellent team rugby all weekend and can certainly hold their heads high in being

runners up.……………………………..………………………………………………………………………………………………….…………….

The team contested the Junior State Championships over the

long weekend under some slightly warmer conditions.

The boys beat Randwick in the pool games but lost to Hunter

in the qualifying round. On the Monday the team beat

Warringa in the grading match.

Once again the team played well and the boys should be

congratulated on their efforts.

LOCAL AUTHOUR TO VISIT WHS

Award-winning local author Claire Zorn will be visiting the Library on Wednesday 17th June. Claire Zorn

lives on the south coast of New South Wales with her husband and two small children. She has a

Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Post Graduate Diploma in writing. She is a music lover, retro furniture

collector and amateur swim-club enthusiast. Any Book Club members or interested readers are invited

to attend provided they have permission from their Period 3 class teacher. Claire’s recent books “The

Protected” and “The Sky So Heavy” are both available for borrowing in the Library.

BOOK CLUB

This week Book Club members were treated to guest speaker Mr Anderson speaking about Zane Grey’s

“An American Angler in Australia” and the journal “Fly Life” .

Australia brings to mind images of the Great Barrier Reef, great white sharks, huge crocodiles and

friendly people. Zane Grey fished everywhere, but he often found himself lured back to the Pacific

especially around Australia and New Zealand. Most of the fish caught in An American Angler in Australia

are sharks (great white, tiger, even a few carpet!) but you can't go big game fishing in Australia and not

expect to be teased by marlins. Zane has

captured his experiences in his book.

“Fly Life” is a journal that features the best salt

water and fresh water fishing in Australia and

New Zealand.

NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS

This week at Woonona High School students were in

preparation for NAIDOC Week celebrations.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders

Day Observance Committee. NAIDOC week is

traditionally held the first week in July and is time to

celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander

history, culture and achievements. It is also a time to

recognise the contributions that indigenous Australians

make to our country and society.

This week the library has been preparing a NAIDOC Week display with many aboriginal artefacts,

whilst indigenous students have been busy with artworks to complete the display. Next week there

will be a NAIDOC CoS Aboriginal games day and many other celebrations have been planned. A full

coverage of the activities will be reported in following newsletters.

UNIFORM ORDERS

Below is a school uniform order sheet and price list. Orders can be made and paid for on line or at the front office. The uniform

shop is open every Thursday morning and orders that have been received through the week will be delivered to students on

Thursdays.


CENTRAL AUSTRALIA TRIP 2016

The HSIE Faculty is once again in the process of organising an excursion for 2016. At this stage the journey will take the form of

a flight from Sydney to Uluru, thence coach travel and camping our way through areas such as Katherine Gorge, Kings Canyon,

Mataranka Springs, Kakadu and many other locations, with our final stop in Darwin.

The final costing is yet to known, but will be in the vicinity of $2000.00 and will be advertised as soon as the quotation is

received from the travel agent. At this stage the trip will be over a two week period at the end of Term 3, 2016 with the actual

dates yet to be confirmed.

Instalment type payments are envisaged, with prospective travellers having 12-18 months to save and pay.

This is still in the early stage of planning, however, expressions of interest are now being sought from students that will be in

Years 9, 10 and 11 next year that may be keen to travel and learn about their great country. As the final costing is dependent

upon the numbers travelling, some indication of possible numbers will allow for more accurate costing.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS The uniform shop has now got spray jackets, school

jumpers and zipper jackets in stock inmost sizes.

Previous orders have been filled and if you wish to

purchase cooler weather clothing the uniform shop

is now able to supply these items .

New Prices are as follows:

Spray Jackets: $65

Jumpers (Sloppy Joes): $35

Zipper Jackets: $40

Reminder to parents that school caps are now available at the uniform shop for $15.

We are trying to encourage all students to wear the correct cap as part of the school uniform.

Uniform order forms can be downloaded from our website or they are available at

the Front Office.

The Uniform Shop is open each Thursday from 8.00am—9.30am.
