ABOUT BALA VIKASA INTERNATIONAL CENTER (BVIC, HYDERABAD)

Centre for Social Entrepreneurship (CSE) under the School of Management and Labour Studies (SMLS)at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) launched an innovative Masters Program on ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ in the year 2007 with the guiding principle of “Entrepreneurship development through practice”.

ABOUT TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (TISS, MUMBAI)

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

Since its inception, the Vision of TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changes in social realities through development and application of knowledge towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all

Bala Vikasa International Centre (BVIC), Hyderabad, was founded in 2014 as an extended arm of Bala Vikasa Social Service Society, a Community development organization based in Warangal with a 42 year legacy.

With state-of-the-art facility housing one of the biggest social incubators in the country and a highly experienced team of professionals, BVIC’s mission is to emerge as a center of excellence in social entrepreneurship and responsible business over the next few years. So far, 30 social start-ups have been provided with incubation support in the form of capacity-building, mentoring, networking and funding, and over 30 workshops conducted for a wide spectrum of stakeholders in social entrepreneurship.

BVIC also works actively with corporates on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agendas providing advisory, consultancy and capacity building programs to CSRprofessionals. Drawing from the vast experience of implementing some of the most innovative and sustainable community-driven development projects in partnership with reputed multinational corporations, BVIC offers unique and very relevant insights to participants.

No business can solve all of society’s problems or bear the cost of doing so. Instead, each company must select issues that resonate with its functional areas. The essential test that should guide CSR is not whether a cause is worthy but whether it presents an opportunity to create a shared value; a meaningful benefit for society that is also valuable to the business.

This is the core purpose with which the EPGD-ICSR program is designed. The program provides the perspective to look beyond conventional CSR practices and engage in such activities which lead to shared value creation for the society as well as the business.

Introduction of EPGD Programs :

EXECUTIVE POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN INNOVATIVE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY(EPGDICSR)

There seems to be a clear shift as development is now seen to be closely linked to the efficient functioning of the market economy. One area that is witnessing a lot of activity is Social Entrepreneurship or SE. This program can have several relevant definitions but each one agrees that it is an attempt to merge conflicting priorities of social good and profitability, into one and unique business model. This, in a way is redefining business models and making them more inclusive.

EPGD–SE, will prepare the partic-ipants to embark on the journey of

social entrepreneurship and provide them with necessary tools to make this journey more meaningful and primed for success.

On the other hand, and through different interventions, other players of market economy such as public and private sector companies are attempting to address sustainability challenges in the business in a holistic manner by integrating both societal and company perspectives. With the changes in the company laws and increasing realisation of inclusive growth through CSR, there has

been paradigm shift in the way development strategies are conceptualised and implemented. EPGD-ICSR is a program which will provide participants all the knowledge to design, conceptualise and implement effective and strategic CSR programs.

Therefore, EPGD Programmes offered by TISS in partnership with BVIC are positioned to serve to these critical gaps in producing skilled individuals who would participate in market economy constructively with an entrepreneurial bent of mind.
