Since Dr. Steven H. Kaplan became President of the University of New Haven in 2004, his vision of growth and prosperity has been the driving force behind the University’s evolution into one of the finest comprehensive universities in New England.

During this time, the University has stretched its wings physically and academically. We’ve seen nearly $180

million in capital improvements and new construction projects take shape, and we have launched 14 new academic programs from among our six schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences and the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.

Our emphasis on experiential learning and career preparation continues to make our reputation as a university that has its feet planted firmly in the real world. U.S. News & World Report has included UNH in its top tier of regional universities in its “America’s Best Colleges” edition for the last four years. We have also been ranked by The Princeton Review as among the “Best in the Northeast” in the publications’s list for 2015. The annual college ranking is based on data collected from several hundred colleges and universities in 11 states and Washington, D.C.

WITH TOMORROW’S LEADERS AS WELL AS LEADING ALUMNICONNECTWhen you enter the EMBA program at UNH, you immediately become part of a close-knit and powerful network that will become one of your best allies in your rise to the top.

First, you will be going through the program with peers who, like yourself, have their feet set firmly on the path leading to the C-Suite. As you share insights and benefit from each other’s experiences, you will be creating a new network — in person — that will provide you with valuable contacts in the years to come. No Internet-based networking tool can match a network created this way — one that’s built on shared experiences as peers move through a program together. These relationships will endure throughout your working life and even afterward, opening doors to career moves, referrals, and new ideas.

In addition to the network of peers that you create, UNH delivers to you an impressive network of alumni. In fact, we have the largest Executive MBA alumni body in Connecticut, giving our students an unusual wealth of networking opportunities and potential for career advancement. Our alumni live throughout the U.S. and in exciting places all over the world, working in a broad spectrum of corporations and government organizations.

Want us to play a more active role in making those important connections for you? Our dedicated Career Development Center provides support for those looking to take the next step in their career as well as those looking for qualified professionals for their organization.

The Executive MBA at the University of New Haven offers one of the few integrated learning experiences for the working business professional. With a program designed to explore the key themes in the life of a successful organization throughout the entire program and not just in a single semester, students gain a comprehensive view of what it takes to succeed and thrive in today’s complex world.

Your integrated experience begins when you select your strategic management project at the start of the program. With the guidance of your faculty team, you will develop a study outline, implement the study, and produce recommendations based on data collected at various key milestones. Your final project will be a tangible deliverable, offering strategies and recommendations that reflect your newfound knowledge and insights.

You also will participate in class-wide integrated learning experiences such as a best case and worst case scenario analysis. Completed at the end of each module, this class session lets you delve deeper into a particular business challenge, present analysis, and explore both sides of an issue. In addition, an ethics session will allow you to build on class discussions concerning ethical practices while you examine your own values and behavior.

At the midpoint of your program, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a Study Away session so that you may apply what you’ve learned to a global environment. As a cohort accompanied by a faculty expert, you’ll visit world-class commercial and industrial facilities and meet with business, government, and community leaders.

As you conclude your program, you will be asked to present your strategic management project to your UNH teaching team as part of a mock boardroom simulation. Your teaching team has the opportunity to raise questions and make suggestions from both an academic and a business perspective. You also will be asked to integrate and apply your new-found knowledge in a dynamic, virtual business simulation, where you will compete in teams in an international marketplace. Faculty members assume roles around labor, banking, SEC, OSHA, and other entities to create real-world challenges that test your critical thinking.

GREATER SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANYACHIEVE

When it comes to outstanding success stories, Sam Bergami’s is at the top of the list. A 1985 graduate of the University’s EMBA program, Bergami is CEO and co-owner of Alinabal Holdings, Inc., where he started as a tool and die apprentice and worked his way up the corporate ladder. His company has experienced significant growth through its keen focus on customer service and Lean production initiatives while maintaining a consistent employee level of 325 people.

Bergami has never forgotten his UNH roots, sharing his success with the University in numerous ways. Former chair of the University’s Board of Governors from 2006 to 2012, Bergami was one of the two major donors who made the purchase of the Orange Campus possible. In addition, he was a significant donor to three of the University’s signature buildings: Bergami Hall, the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center, and the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science.

One of the most impressive experiential learning facilities on the West Haven campus was also made possible thanks to his generosity — the Samuel S. Bergami Learning Center for Finance and Technology, a state-of-the-art destination for business students that replicates the innovative technology of the New York Stock Exchange. It’s a miniature Wall-and-Broad right on the Boston Post Road.

Our graduate campus in Orange brings the corporate world into every classroom, which is not surprising, since it is the former headquarters of Hubbell, Inc. In its new incarnation, however, it is the spectacular home of our Executive MBA program as well as the MBA and the M.S. in the Management of Sports Industries.

Adjacent to the Wilbur Cross Parkway in the pastoral stretch between exits 55 and 56, the campus is not only a quick ride from our West Haven campus, but it is also attracting students to UNH from different areas — Hartford and nearby Fairfield County.

With its tranquil beauty and distraction-free setting, the campus is the perfect place to concentrate. You start unwinding from your busy schedule as you make your way up a tree-tunneled driveway, at the top of which is the high-tech heart of the campus — a 70,000-square-foot, three-building facility with Wi-Fi throughout and a series of smart classrooms with laptops and multiple print stations at your disposal. Also standing by is a computer lab stocked with PCs. Group breakout rooms feature flat-panel TVs for presentations and conferencing capabilities.

Since the campus has the corporate world in its DNA, you will find some corporate-grade amenities there as well, such as catered meals in a private dining room and a security staff that provides escorts back to students’ cars on request in the evening.

The stunning campus became a reality for the University thanks, in large part, to the generosity of two prominent alumni. Samuel S. Bergami, Jr., ’85 EMBA, and Charles E. Pompea, ’71, ’90 EMBA, leaders in the business community, who both made significant contributions to help fund the purchase of the property.

A career-advancing EMBA program, impressive faculty, stunning setting, and get-down-to-business atmosphere — it’s why we’re calling this a campus like no other, a new haven for business success.

Sometimes a career hits a wall, and it has nothing to do with a lack of skills or experience, impressive as they may be. The obstacle may even be something the individual is unaware of — a result of being too close to the situation to see things from an objective point of view.

This is when executive coaching can make a huge difference, unblocking a career path and restoring momentum. Recognizing the power of executive coaching, the University of New Haven has made it an integral part of its EMBA program. We assign a personal executive coach, with years of experience in the upper echelons of the corporate world, to each of our students.

An executive coach fills a critical need for many busy executives — that is, the need for a thought partner and a sounding board. In this role, the coach will provide objective and sustained feedback, generally focusing on three areas of the executive’s work life: the intrapersonal, which includes the development of the individual’s skill level and knowledge; the interpersonal, which covers, among other things, the development of management and leadership skills as well as how to reduce conflict with other executives; and the organizational, encompassing such issues as the removal of obstacles that hamper implementation of strategic initiatives and goals.

Each student, of course, brings a unique set of career challenges. Executive Coach Thomas Giordano notes, “One student may have difficulty transitioning from an engineering career to a more business-oriented career. Another may be suffering from mediocre personnel reviews. Another may be having difficulties working with certain people or certain bosses. Or a hundred other scenarios. Each student’s coaching is very unique and very personal. That is what makes the UNH Executive Coaching program so powerful.”

Executive Coach Michael Davis adds, “I truly love helping our students make the transformational shift from great managers to great leaders. Many of them come into the program as subject experts in their specific disciplines and are seeking guidance and assistance in making a quantum leap to add leadership to their career skill set. I tell my students that they will see a change, and the people around them will see a change.”

“Each student’s coaching is very unique and very personal. That is what makes the UNH executive coaching program so powerful.”

Cathy Bradley had already earned a master’s degree in economics when she decided she needed to broaden her business acumen in order to assume more leadership roles. As she considered different universities, she knew she needed an executive program that allowed her to continue to work full time and raise her family. She found her answer at the University of New Haven.

“The Executive MBA model worked for both my personal and professional life and met my educational objectives,” said Bradley. “What’s more, it gave me the opportunity to really network with seasoned business professionals — not just for an hour and a half of class but for complete days. We really got to know each other and share views and business problems. It was much more valuable than my traditional master’s program.”

After graduating from UNH in 1984, Bradley went on to hold a number of executive positions, including officer with the Southern New England Telephone utility as well as with Nextel Communications, and president of a wholesale business. She credits her Executive MBA experience and its broad business foundation with giving her the confidence to lead.

“I had a deep economic background, but my Executive MBA program expanded my view. I learned how to build and run a business and improve business performance across multiple disciplines, rather than leveraging business from a silo view,” said Bradley.

Most recently, Bradley served as a managing director of Accenture’s global Customer Contact Practice. She now has launched her own consulting practice helping businesses to improve their operating effectiveness and leverage new technologies. Much like her experience as a student at UNH, she helps to bridge different disciplines and ways of thinking to create a more holistic view of an organization.

When Michael Driscoll was named president of Winchester Electronics in 1999, he was faced with the challenge of competing as a David in a field of Goliaths. “I had to figure out quickly how to be relevant,” said Driscoll of an electronics connector industry that totaled some $45 billion at the time.

Knowing that his company couldn’t continue to succeed on price and delivery with commodity products, the University of New Haven Executive MBA graduate chose to change the playing field and specialize in high-end interconnect devices for medical, telecommunications and in alternative-energy customers. He retooled the organization, including changing its labor pool and dramatically rethinking its core offerings, and ultimately saw revenue triple.

Today, Driscoll serves as chairman of Winchester Electronics and credits the experiential nature of the UNH program in helping to provide him with the strategies to lead change in his industry and company. In particular, he credits the cohort format with enriching his learning experience. “I was sitting with the chairman and CEO of the ShopRite stores, and with a Ph.D. in the biomedical field who was starting his own genetics company,” recalled Driscoll of his Executive MBA class. “To sit and listen to people like that and learn how they would handle certain things, I found as valuable — if not more valuable — than going through coursework itself.”

While Driscoll doesn’t believe the Executive MBA program is for everyone, he does believe it is effective for professionals who want to advance to the C-suite.

He credits the program for having honed his leadership skills, skills that originated during a 10-year tenure with TRW, Inc. and which were put to the test at Winchester Electronics. “How do you get to be president of a company? By being in the presence of presidents or future presidents of companies,” said Driscoll. “You have to start thinking in those terms. And this program ties it all together.”

The UNH Executive MBA program offers a convenient weekend schedule, making it one of the more flexible degree programs in the Northeast.

PERSONAL ATTENTIONOne of the key advantages of the Executive MBA program is our small class size. In fact, each class, or cohort, is limited to 25 or fewer business professionals. This ensures that you benefit from collaborative discussions led by faculty who bring both academic and business experience into the classroom. Our faculty encourages team learning, allowing students to exchange best practices and insights from their diverse organizations and industries.

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULEWe offer a convenient class schedule to help our students balance their academic work with their personal and professional commitments. Classes meet every three weeks on Fridays and Saturdays. Students complete six modules within 23 months.

HIGH-TECH ADVANTAGESWe use Blackboard, a virtual learning environment and online course management tool. Blackboard’s integrated learning modules offer a hybrid component to complement in-class study. The platform enables greater collaboration among students when working on projects outside the classroom.

I am a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel with 24 years of active-duty military service. I am currently employed by Sikorsky Aircraft as a deputy program manager, and I am responsible for leading teams in the building of proposals and the execution of contract changes to the MH-60R and MH-60S helicopters in support of the U.S. Navy.

Why did you choose UNH, and what attracted you, to your graduate program?

I selected UNH’s EMBA program for three reasons. First and foremost, I was drawn to the integrated curriculum. I value an integrated approach that strategically weaves in multiple elements of the business curriculum and continually connects the workings of one subject with another. Second, UNH’s curriculum schedule fits best within the demands of my professional and personal life. Meeting every three weeks provides me the right balance to successfully complete the program. Finally, UNH’s program offered me the most advantageous veteran’s benefits. After 24 years of service, I am happy to be in a position where I can use both the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and UNH’s Yellow Ribbon program to fund my education.

How have your experiences at UNH helped prepare you for your desired career path?

My experiences at UNH have enabled me to interact with professionals from a variety of industries and various business structures. The student cohort is made up of individuals from corporate America, privately-owned business, and the nonprofit sector. Interacting with them has substantially increased my awareness of the various challenges faced within

each environment. The knowledge gained through my instructors has given me the financial skills to effectively manage a profit-and-loss statement as well as the organizational behavior skills to ensure that I am performing effectively as a leader.

Tell us about a memorable hands-on learning experience, such as a class project, applied research, or an internship that you have participated in.

I was part of a four-member group that conducted a case study on the organic grocery store Whole Foods, Inc. We evaluated Whole Foods using all the disciplines that had been taught throughout the module — finance, accounting, economics, quantitative analysis and IT. This allowed us the opportunity to showcase and utilize the knowledge and tools that we gained as a result of all of our coursework.

What are your post-graduation plans?

My post-graduation plans are to further my professional growth through continued challenges and opportunities within the aerospace industry. I have a passion for leadership and look forward to new opportunities to teach, coach, mentor, and lead employees in positions of increasing responsibility.
