Position Overview – Executive Director of Corporate and

Foundation Relations

The Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations reports directly to the AssociateVice Chancellor for University Development and is responsible for building and directing aprogram to strengthen existing relationships and establishing long-term partnerships withcorporations and foundations that will result in funding for the immediate and long-term goalsand priorities of the University and its entities.

The position provides the expertise to advance the University’s interests by identifying sources ofsupport, proactively seeking opportunities to generate new proposals based on corporate andfoundation guidelines and interests, and by maintaining strong communication ties withcorporate and foundation donors and prospects.

Essential Duties:

Direct and coordinate pan-university corporate and foundation-related fund raisingactivities, working closely with the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (RGS, includingSponsored Programs and Research Compliance, the Proposal Development Unit, the Officeof Technology Transfer, the Graduate School, and the Centennial Campus PartnershipOffice) as well as with development personnel in the colleges/divisions. Coordinate fundraising activity for special collaborative projects involving diverse scientific disciplinesacross campus.

Work with the Offices of RGS, Prospect Research, and Prospect Management to identifypotential donors and conduct research of corporate and foundation prospects to documentthe current level and all points of engagement between the University and potentialfunders. Determine the assignment of prospects between Central Development and theentity development programs.

Work closely with RGS, faculty, deans, department heads, fund raisers, and other staff todevelop and implement strategies that lead to major funding from corporations andfoundations around core areas of mutual interest. Organize the various offices across theUniversity to interact effectively and efficiently with external funders. Lead thedevelopment of multi-level relationships across the University with corporations andfoundations, and strengthen and leverage those relationships for enhanced levels offunding.

Alert faculty and staff to funding opportunities with corporations and foundations, andassist in development of strategies, and tactics, including proposals to obtain those grants.

Develop highly competitive proposals for corporate and foundation prospects and leveragediverse corporate and foundation goals and preferences in conjunction with university-widepriorities and goals. Monitor proposal deadlines, prepare and edit proposals, and manageproposal submissions.

Develop materials to assist those seeking gifts from corporations and foundations,including staff training.

Build a corporate and foundation relations program, recruit, hire and train a staff that willinclude other development officers and administrative support staff.

Maintain a rigorous schedule of contacts with corporate and foundation representatives,creating management plans related to them, compelling presentations and comprehensivefundraising proposals.

Maintain high quality stewardship process for active corporate and foundation prospectsand donors. Ensure that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustainsuccessful partnerships by maintaining detailed records of solicitation activities.

Supervise the daily operations of the office, including budget, and support staff.

Skills and Knowledge:

Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques,particularly in the area of corporate and foundation relations.

Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for obtaining informationabout the giving programs of corporations and foundations.

Accomplishments over the past few years include:

NC State is ranked in the Top 25 of the Philanthropy 400 among public colleges anduniversities (Chronicle of Philanthropy).

Fiscal year 2014 gifts and commitments totaled $187 million, the second highest total inUniversity history (second only to $202 million raised in Fiscal Year 2103).

Significant new investments in the Annual Giving program, resulting in a 100 percentincrease in gift receipts through Annual Giving in the last three years. NC State leads thenation among its peers in the acquisition of new donors.

Corporate and foundation giving dramatically increased this fiscal year with a $13 milliongrant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a $16 million gift from the Randall B.Terry Charitable Foundation for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Randy WoodsonChancellor

Dr. Randy Woodson was appointed the 14th chancellor of North Carolina StateUniversity on April 1, 2010. He brought to NC State more than 25 years ofexperience as an internationally renowned plant scientist and academic leader.

Under his leadership, NC State has built upon its reputation as a pre-eminentresearch institution. It is a time marked by many transformative changes — the

opening of the James B. Hunt Jr. Library on Centennial Campus, the launch of the College ofSciences and the completion of the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Woodson also guided the universityin securing leadership roles in groundbreaking research projects, such as the Next GenerationPower Electronics National Manufacturing Innovation Institute, the Laboratory for AnalyticSciences, the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management Systems Center and theNanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of IntegratedSensors and Technologies.Even in the face of unprecedented financial challenges, these advances were made possiblethanks to Woodson’s strategic plan and the accompanying Strategic Resource Managementinitiative, which aligned the university for greater effectiveness, efficiency and — mostimportantly — student success.

Woodson grew up in Fordyce, Ark., and attended the University of Arkansas, receiving a B.S. inhorticulture. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in plant physiology from Cornell University. He joinedthe Louisiana State University faculty in 1983, moving to Purdue University as an assistantprofessor of horticulture in 1985. Prior to his administrative appointments, Woodson also served

as head of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Purdue and was avisiting scholar at the École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Toulouse in France.

Over his decades-long career in higher education, Woodson has contributed a substantial body ofknowledge to the field of plant science, which has been published in more than 100 journalarticles and book chapters. His research has covered topics such as plant genetics, molecularbiology, biotechnology and sustainable bioproducts development, spanning the gap between thedetailed science of plant physiology and the practical application of this knowledge in the field ofhorticulture. His research has been featured in stories published in BusinessWeek, The Futuristand Discover.

Woodson has received a number of professional honors during his career, including the PurdueUniversity Agriculture Research Award, the American Society for Horticultural Science OutstandingResearcher Career Award and the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, the highest award presentedby the governor of Indiana for service. He is a fellow of the American Society for HorticulturalScience.

He and his wife, Susan, an accomplished artist, have three adult children: Samantha, a librarian atCentral Carolina Community College; Patrick, an agricultural engineer at RTI International; andChloe, a care provider and educator in the TEACCH Autism Program at the University of NorthCarolina at Chapel Hill. The Woodsons have one granddaughter.

Brian C. Sischo, a 25-year veteran of higher education fund raising, is ViceChancellor for University Advancement at NC State University and president ofthe NC State University Foundation. He joined NC State in March 2014 fromSyracuse University, where he served for over 13 years in increasinglyresponsible positions, most recently as Vice President for Development from2009 - 2014. At NC State, Sischo oversees University Development, Alumni

Relations and Marketing & Communications.

With an impressive track record of success in higher education advancement, he currently leads ateam of over 220 centrally- and college-based advancement staff. While at Syracuse, Sischospearheaded the planning, implementation and successful conclusion of the University’s $1billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Among many notable accomplishments under hisleadership, private annual gift support to the university more than doubled during the campaignperiod.
