THE OPPORTUNITY

The Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation is seeking a seasoned fundraising leader as its new Vice President, Development for Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation (HHSF) / McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCHF). Reporting to the President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, the successful candidate will lead all fundraising for McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) or “Mac Kids”, one of the most highly-revered and beloved institutions in the Golden Horseshoe. In this extensively public-facing role, the Vice President will serve as MCHF’s chief fundraiser and community ambassador. The new incumbent will be charged with designing and implementing a comprehensive development plan to forge new alliances and relationships across the region to grow financial resources, with a primary focus on individual leadership, major & planned gifts, corporate partnerships, annual giving, third party events and donor stewardship. In addition the successful candidate will participate in developing the donor prospect base for a major capital campaign contemplated for a future new children’s hospital, and will take the lead in building the campaign plan from the ground up. In this executive role, the Vice President will supervise a dedicated and highly effective team of five and serve as a member of the HHSF management team.

HHS is a family of seven unique hospitals, a cancer centre, and an urgent care centre which together serve more than 2.3 million residents of Hamilton and South-Central Ontario each year. HHS is the second-largest hospital group in Ontario, and acts as a regional referral centre for burns, cancer, cardiac, digestive diseases, high-risk obstetrics, neurosurgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, stroke, trauma, and rehabilitation services. ABOUT HAMILTON HEALTH SCIENCES FOUNDATION (HHSF)

The mission of HHSF is to support patient care, research, and education across HHS’ family of hospitals and medical centres. HHSF is committed to a values-based work environment that is characterized by: care, respect, innovation, and accountability. We are focused on raising funds and managing donor gifts that provide the medical teams at HHS with the essentials to enable excellence in patient care. We support the needs of Hamilton General Hospital, McMaster Children’s Hospital including the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, McMaster University Medical Centre, St. Peter’s Hospital, and all of their associated programs to ensure they provide the clinical leadership and specialized medical expertise that is needed at the most critical of times. We fund capital redevelopment projects, purchase medical equipment and technology, and invest in research. Through the generosity of our donors, we raised $25.2 (not including investment income) in 2017-18, and disbursed $18.4 million to HHS to fund equipment, redevelopment, research and fellowships, and education and bursaries. We are excited about the future as we continue building a strong foundation of support. The last five years enabled us to transform our brand as we united our efforts as a single organization and built awareness throughout the region. We made changes to enhance our donors’ experience by engaging them through a variety of communication vehicles, and added social media and digital marketing to our portfolio. We grew our partnerships with Children’s Miracle Network and Canada’s Children’s Hospitals Foundation, launched Care4 as our cause-marketing program, and engaged with other organizations and individuals throughout the region. We completed major gift campaigns at all of our supported sites, and achieved an increased physical presence for our philanthropic efforts. We engaged more physicians and staff by launching the staff recognition program, “Honour, Give, Transform”, and the “Staff 50/50 Lottery”. We focused on building for the future by launching the 20BY20 Endowment campaign, and built policies, business processes, and a governance structure that enables us to be recognized for our best practices through the Imagine Canada Accreditation and Association of Healthcare Philanthropy.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Vice President, Development HHSF/MCHF will be an accomplished fundraiser with a deep knowledge of the development function. A high-level strategist with a broad perspective, the ideal candidate will proactively seek and explore untapped potential in our community and region. The new incumbent will be goal-oriented and focused on deliverables which achieve the objectives of both HHSF and MCHF. Charismatic and fearless, the successful candidate will be a seasoned major gifts professional, with significant experience moving prospects through the donor cycle from pipeline development through to securing gifts in the five- to seven-figure range. The ideal candidate will also have experience developing and implementing transformational capital campaigns. An authentic, motivational leader, the Vice President will be organized, responsive and partnership oriented, inspiring board and committee volunteers to open doors and leverage personal and business relationships which lead to new gifts for the organization. KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the President and CEO of the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, and working within our value system, the Vice President, Development will be responsible for: Fundraising Strategy Development and Implementation

Develops and implements the annual business and fundraising plan for MCHF and contributes to development of Foundations’ annual budget.

Plans, manages and implements leadership, major & planned giving, corporate partnerships (CMN) and third party events to meet the funding needs of MCHF and affiliated programs and centres.

Contributes to the development of the Foundation’s Strategic Plan and annual operating plans, particularly with respect to major gifts and gift planning for MCHF.

Actively manages a portfolio of prospects to attain specific annual goals.

Strategizes with the President & CEO, development team, and senior volunteers on solicitation of lead gifts.

Participates in management, identification, and recruitment of volunteers.

Identifies target markets for new development activities including those that support the Children’s Miracle Network and Canada’s Children’s Hospital Foundations.

Relationship and Alliance Building

Builds, develops and maintains effective and mutually beneficial partnerships with key stakeholders within the hospital, its Foundation and the larger community, building awareness and gaining support in order to further the goals and objectives of the organization.

Works with the President & CEO to engage MCH staff and physician leadership in the identification and solicitation of major gift prospects.

Provides leadership to corporate and community engagement through third party events and other revenue generating opportunities such as cause marketing.

Prepares reports for HHSF Management Team, Board of Directors and MCH volunteers within the membership of The Development Committee.

Supports activities to build and foster a culture of philanthropy within HHSF.

Communications, Donor Recognition and Stewardship

Develops strategies to support strong and positive donor relations, including recognition and acknowledgement programs, donor appreciation, and stewardship of key prospects.

Oversees timely preparation of gift acknowledgements, stewardship repots, donor recognition events and donor wall(s) updates per HHSF policies and processes.

With the VP Marketing & Communications, ensures the development of key communication materials to support fundraising, stewardship and recognition activities related to fundraising initiatives for MCHF.

Ensures adherence to gift acceptance policies.

People Leadership

In conjunction with the President and CEO, identifies, recruits and trains leadership volunteers to support fundraising for MCHF.

Hires, trains, develops and evaluates employees in accordance with the policies of the organization and best human resources practices.

Gains the commitment of staff to the mission, vision and values of the Foundation, and ensures that approved strategies and initiatives are integrated into the performance measurement indicators of every staff member.

Negotiates salary and recommend compensation for approval by the President and CEO.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

7-10 years fundraising experience with 3-5 years’ experience in major gifts.

Experience developing and implementing capital campaigns.

Strong business, planning, implementation and management skills with demonstrated longer term, strategic thinking.

Experience leading and coaching a professional fundraising team toward a unified objective, challenging and motivating performance standards.

Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with prospective and current donors, board members, physicians, medical staff, senior leadership and development team members.

Solid track record in soliciting and closing planned gifts and outright current gifts in five to seven figure range.

Demonstrated campaign experience and fluency in building a campaign plan.

Proven experience as a role model and mentor, building the skills and competencies of others and gaining respect and credibility at all levels.

Demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality and sensitivity. Has a commitment to personal excellence, professionalism and integrity.

Possesses strong interpersonal skills with an inclusive communication style that acknowledges the opinions of others and creates an environment in which others feel comfortable sharing divergent points of view.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

University education required, CFRE and/or FAHP designation an asset.

BIOGRAPHY

Pearl F. Veenema, FAHP President & CEO Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Pearl joined Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation as President & CEO in August 2007 and is currently a member of the Mohawk College Foundation board, and the MacKay CEO forum. Pearl decided to focus her career on fundraising development in 1999, after an earlier career in nursing and health care administration. As a fundraising professional, Pearl served as President and Chief Development Officer for the former Orthopaedic and Arthritic Foundation in Toronto, and both Managing Director of Campaigns and Vice President Advancement for the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation at University Health Network (UHN).

Pearl is a Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive, CFRE International. In 2013, Pearl was awarded the prestigious Harold J. (Si) Seymour Award from the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) in recognition of a career that reflects exemplary standards of excellence in fostering volunteerism and philanthropy. Committed to continuing education and professional standards, Pearl has held many volunteer leadership roles at the regional and national levels for AHP, including Chair. Pearl also served for two terms as Chair, AHP University-based Programs and Director of the Madison Institute for Healthcare Philanthropy in addition to 14 years on the Faculty. Pearl was a Director and Chair, CFRE International Board and is a frequent presenter at conferences. Pearl was a contributing author for the first-ever Canadian Fundraising Textbook, Excellence in Fundraising Canada. She is a proud alumni (2009/13) of Conversation which is an “immersion experience focused on the future of the social sector and the evolving role of philanthropy”. Pearl and her husband, Frank, live in Oakville and have an adult son Michael.
