“THE BIBLE...THE ABSOLUTE WORD OF GOD” “The law of the Lord is perfect (Psalm 19:7)...the sum of Your word is truth

(Psalm 119:160)”

The following are twelve sermon titles which I thought of for a series on the absolute truth of God. Someone should develop the sermons to follow the titles. Any takers? I would like to in the future, Lord willing, but if you beat me to it let me know!

1. The Bible and My Master (The Absolute Lordship of Jesus Christ)

(To what extent does Jesus want to run my life?)

2. The Bible and My Maturity (The Absolute Obedience of the Believer)

(How should I develop and grow in my Christian life?)

3. The Bible and My Mind (The Absolute Truth for the Believer)

(Does what we think and how we think affect what we do?)

4. The Bible and My Morality (The Absolute Purity of the Believer)

(How to maintain a clean and pure heart before God and men)

5. The Bible and My Money( The Absolute Stewardship of the Believer)

(How does God intend for me to earn, spend and give money?)

6. The Bible and My Marriage (The Absolute Fidelity of Biblical Marriage)

(What is God’s intended purpose for marriage and family?)

7. The Bible and My Message (The Absolute Exclusivity of the Gospel)

(How to defend an exclusive claim in an inclusive world?)

8. The Bible and My Methods (The Absolute Honor of Christ and His Church)

(Does it matter HOW we worship and serve God...as long as we do?)

9. The Bible and My Mouth (The Absolute Impact of the Tongue)

(Sticks & stones may break my bones but words can kill me!)

10. The Bible and My Memory (The Absolute Recall of God’s Word)

(Can I remember the right Bible verses at the right time to defend my faith?)

11. The Bible and My Music (The Absolute Balance of Sound)

(Does music convey morality or can lyrics be carried on any plane?)

12. The Bible and My Mortality (The Absolute Certainty of Death)

(Who determines when and how I die and where I spend eternity?) — rrc

In just a couple of weeks our association will celebrate our 84th Annual Meeting. Since the founding of PLBA we have made steady progress in ful-filling our mission. Interestingly, 47 of those 84 years were directed by James Paul Maxwell (29) and myself (18). These have been filled with much excitement and a few disappointments. God has granted to us His manifold blessing for which we are deeply grateful. This year’s Annual Meeting will convey the theme, “That the Generations To Come May Know” (Psalm 78:6). Regarding the word and work of God, the psalmist challenges God’s people (and subsequently, us)

“Not to conceal them from their children, but tell to the gen-erations to come the praises of the Lord: For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that they should teach them to their children, that the generations to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children…”

Never has there been a time in American church history when this truth has been needed more. Where have all our children gone? Look at the miss-ing 18-34 year olds in most PLBA churches! Why has a generation been lost? These are crucial questions for the church—and associations of churches. We hope to provide some (at least a few) answers in our October 14, 2014 Annual Meeting, FBC, Prague. Make your plans today to be there. You are certainly welcome to attend, whether or not you come as an official messenger from your church. Another generation awaits our commission!

Encouragingly Yours, Russell Cook

October is PASTOR APPRECIATION Month

All across our convention and in many other denominations, churches will ob-serve “Pastor Appreciation” during the month of October. There are many ways this can be done. Usually one or two people will need to take the initiative—maybe a Dea-con and wife or Personnel Chairman or just any member with a love for their Pastor and a heart to serve. These people need to go to the appropriate committee(s) with a formal and specific recommendation to observe Pastor Appreciation Month. The fol-lowing are some recommendations made in other churches:

(1) Designate a certain Sunday to have a big public recognition of the Pastor, Minis-try Staff and their spouses. Present each of them with a nice gift.

(2) Receive a love offering to be presented to the Pastor at a special service. (3) Offer to send the Pastor and his wife on an “all expense paid trip” to a nice bed

and breakfast or resort... or cruise... or ? (4) Discover from family, friends or associates what he really has need of and meet

that need during the month of October (i.e. auto repairs or replacement, furni-ture, computer, books, groceries, etc.)

(5) Recommend a raise in salary and benefits for the Pastor. (Most Pastors in SBC and especially BGCO churches are grossly underpaid.)

These are merely suggestions. Most Pastors will never ask for themselves (and that is as it should be), but the Bible says, “The elders (i.e. Pastors) who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching” (I Timothy 5:17).

PLBA WOMEN

A nutritious meal…a welcoming smile…an acknowledgement that I

exist. That I have a need. That I may have many needs. That someone

cares. I have been helping with a local meal ministry and seeing this

week by week. The first weeks they came silently straggling in,

heads ducked, almost embarrassed to be coming for a “free meal.”

Now, they arrive in numbers, excited to experience Jesus’ love (yet

still hungry). Some are helping to set up tables, smiles are exchanged

(along with recipes), and friendships are being formed. Lord, help us

to meet the needs of their hearts, as well as their stomachs! Marsha Cook, Director
