TRONDHEIM – A CREATIVE CITY WITH A PROUD HISTORY

Welcome to Trondheim and Trøndelag

Trondheim region and Trøndelag offer a wide range of attractions and excursions.

This presentation highlights more than 30 different tours which are available for groups, meetings, incentive and the cruise market.

Choose between sightseeing, guided theme tours, helicopter and boat trips, museums and exciting fortifications. For those who want an active journey, we arrange hiking, biking and boat adventures - and even bird watching excursions.

Trondheim is beautifully situated by the Trondheim fjord where the river Nidelven meanders through the city centre and the characteristic low and colourful wooden architecture creates a unique atmosphere.

Trondheim is the historic capital of Norway, and today the regional capital. The history of the city has played an important role in the development of Norway from the Viking age and medieval times, which many of the popular attractions bear witness to. Trondheim also has strong cultural traditions, hosting a wide range of events and festivals all year round.

The original name of Trondheim was Nidaros. The city was established by the mouth of the river Nidelven in the year 997 by the Norwegian king Olav Tryggvason. Nidaros Cathedral, the great pride of the city, was built over the grave of St. Olav early in the 11th century. The cathedral towers over the city, and is Trondheim’s most unique and popular attraction.

Trondheim is also a city of innovation and technology, with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and several internationally renowned research communities. With 180 000 inhabitants and 30 000 students Trondheim is the 3rd largest city in Norway.

The spectacular and innovative Rockheim – is an interactive museum with six decades of Norwegian rock and pop history at Brattøra.

CREATIVE, HISTORICAL, ADVENTUROUS AND UNINHIBITED TRØNDELAG

A journey in Trøndelag, also known as Mid-Norway, will give you plenty of unforgettable stories to bring with you back home. You will be close to nature and powerful natural forces where comfort and relaxation will always take centre stage. Trøndelag is wild and charming, a place where authentic traditions and untouched nature exist side by side with the modern world.

Trøndelag is like a Norway in miniature. Here we have a coastline with beautiful archipelagos and its coastal culture, the long Trondheim fjord and mountains where the snow never melts.

On the mountain plateau is the charming mining town of Røros, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Walking through the streets of Røros with over 100 historical wooden buildings from the 17th century is like walking within a living museum.

There are important historical sites all around Trøndelag. At Stiklestad, the battle field from 1030, and in Trondheim, the legacy of St. Olav is everywhere. Also the history at Austrått Manor can be dated all the way back to the Viking era. Løkken and Røros have hundreds of years of mining history and the fortresses at Austrått and Hegra each tell their own stories of war.

TRONDHEIM HARBOUR –

A MODERN CRUISE PORT IN A DEVELOPING PART OF THE CITY

Trondheim Harbour is a district with many new developments that combine urban spaces with modern architecture. As you approach the city on a cruise, you will see this new part of Trondheim rising up with the spectacular museum Rockheim as well as the new congress hotel Clarion. There are exciting outdoor areas where the city meets the fjord, a rare interaction between urban life and nature. A new pedestrian bridge connects the city centre and the port. The bridge has shortened the walking distance to the city centre with 600 m and has given Trondheim Harbour a new dimension for all cruise guests.

cultural life, learn more about everyday life in Trondheim and see the

most prominent sights and places such as Nidaros Cathedral, the

Royal Residence, the wharves, the old wooden town bridge from

1681 and the university NTNU.

A great fire in 1681 destroyed many of the city’s buildings, and General Jean

Caspar de Cicignon from Luxembourg was sent to create a new Baroque city

layout with wide boulevards. However, several picturesque quarters have survived

to our time, with small and colorful wooden

houses and narrow alleys. Visit Trondheim can offer conducted tours

with highly qualified and friendly guides who will give the group a memorable tour

of Trondheim. Visit Trondheim has guides proficient

religious center in Norway. Remains from this era still exist, telling histories of romantic

and terrible times. Among these remains are the Archbishop’s Palace, the oldest existing

secular building in Scandinavia, and Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s national sanctuary. Building

started in 1070 over the tomb of St. Olav. Trondheim had 14 stone churches in

the Middle Ages; only a few still exist. Remains of one of these churches from the

medieval period can be seen at the public library, found during archaeological excavations

on the site.

The excursion includes a visit to The Medieval Exhibition, that gives a vivid picture of life

in Trondheim in the Catholic Middle Ages, around 1050-1537.

TOUR 13 - A TASTE OF TRONDHEIM AND THE FANTASTIC LOCAL PRODUCTS FROM THE REGION

The counties of South and North Trøndelag are exploring the potential of the region’s

exceptional local food ingredients.

Why do the products from this region taste better?

One main reason is that berries, vegetables, potatoes and even scallops and mussels need

longer time to grow because of the cold weather conditions.

When we combine this with a lot of light throughout the summer months, the products get a

unique taste and superior quality.

In the mountains the lambs and cows often go grazing where wild flowers and herbs grow,

and this gives the meat a lovely and special taste. One of the main objectives in the region

is to bring the local food out to the general public and

not only serve these delicacies in the gourmet restaurants.

Many restaurants in Trondheim have focus on serving the best products from

the region, and we now tailor make tours for your groups to experience the best.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

Each tour is tailor made to fi t the group. Maybe you are looking for a lunch with a special touch, or a

gourmet 7 course dinner? How about a cookery class or a visit to a producer? Or maybe a “city food

safari” including a starter in one restaurant before you stroll on to the main course somewhere else,

ending up with the dessert in a third place? Everything is possible! Send a request and we will

recommend what’s best for your group.

Legends and stories from medieval times tell about miracles

and wonderful things happening next to St. Olav’s burial

place, and lots of pilgrims visited the site to be healed, or to

be forgiven of their sins.

along to Nidelven river, passed the The Source of St. Olaf

to Nidaros cathedral.

Along the way we meet other pilgrims conveying the

pilgrim life 500 years ago through words, music and

miracles.

This event can be tailor made for both families and other

groups. We are flexible, and together with you we will tailor

make the best program for your group.

In addition to the pilgrimage we can offer food, music, games,

meeting rooms etc.

The Lade Trail runs along the coast of the Lade peninsula. The trail passes sheltered bays and

goes over hilltops with a wonderful view over the Trondheim fjord. The landscape is an area of

The Lade area also plays a central role in Trondheim’s 1000-year old history. This area

was the seat of the Earls of Lade, a dynasty of Norwegian rulers from the 9th century to

the 11th century. The numerous lovely inlets along the path are the result of the sea level

being 175m lower today than at the end of the last ice age.

TOUR 35 - HEGRA FORTESSHegra Fortress is a symbol of the power of resistance and bravery. This fortress heroic

fight against the German occupation force in April - May 1940 ignited a spark of hope and

will-power in the occupied nations. Its underground rooms and passages continue to

share the inspiring story of Norwegian tenacity and pride.

The fortification, raised high upon the hill above the centre of Hegra, has become a

national monument. The old fortress was built to defend us against an enemy coming

from the east – the arch-enemy throughout the centuries - Sweden. However, the true

story began in April 1940. The 200 defenders, among them one woman, stood their

ground against waves of land and air-attacks from the Germans in 25 day.

Major Hans Reidar Holtermann led the brave resistance force.

On the morning of May 5th he made the decision to show the white flag. To go on

fighting was impossible. The lack of food and provisions was precarious. In all

Southern Norway resistance had come to an end, and the fortress was an isolated

Island in a sea of occupants.

The story of Hegra Fortress is kept alive.
