More BUCKS for your BANG! The economics and safety of an epic 4th of July eventBY LORI HENNING

Each year for the past 136 years, the citizens of Excelsior, their family and friends, and

thousands of visitors have celebrated America’s freedom on the shores of Lake Minnetonka. The highlights of the celebration include Lucas Oil Airshows—which benefits the Minnesota Military Family Foundation—music, face painting and food. The celebration culminates with an unparalleled fireworks display over Lake Minnetonka. As suggested by the record-breaking number of families and visitors that attend each year, satisfaction with the event consistently runs high. For one organization, however, the success of the day creates a challenge: how to ensure that the next year’s event will be just as good as, if not better than, the previous year’s event. The challenge is not in generating ideas to enhance the daylong celebration but rather in the increasing cost of hosting an event of this scale. As we celebrate the events of the day, few know or give thought to the who and the how of pulling off an event of such epic proportions—and doing it free of charge. One organization, headed by one woman and her army of volunteers, takes up the challenge each year. Laura Hotvet, executive director of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce, is charged with the responsibility of making certain your family and friends have a safe and memorable holiday, year after year.Laura, a lifelong resident of the Lake Minnetonka area, takes her job seriously and bears the responsibility like a sergeant strategizing a military operation.

On a chilly March morning, she outlines everything that needs to be in place for the 4th of July celebration to ensure the success of the event. As she explains the details, she is also answering calls as they come in to the chamber office, fielding questions from visitors, and checking the status of a souvenir hat for an upcoming fundraiser race she is responsible for. Most people would lose their train of thought with the distractions, but not Laura, who doesn’t miss a beat. Her enthusiasm for an event that is still months away is tangible, but it is easy to see that along with the excitement comes a good share of stress and worry. There is one variable, however, that is difficult to control unless sufficient planning and funding is in place, and that is safety. Listening to her speak of her concerns over everyone’s safety is much like listening to a new mom confess her worries in her ability to care for a newborn; it is reassuring because you know she takes her responsibility seriously and will do what it takes to keep everyone safe and have resources available in the event of an emergency. The question that must be asked is, how does a small community raise the funds to host such an event? An event that allows people to attend for the fun and excitement it offers and not have to give a second thought to whether it is safe? The answer is through the generosity of many individuals, businesses, civic organizations, local cities and hundreds of volunteer hours. For example, last year five local cities donated approximately 11 percent of the $100,000 needed. The Lake Minnetonka Excelsior Rotary

Club raised $12,000 with its Bingo, Beer, and Burgers by the Bay event and hopes to raise even more at this year’s event on Saturday May 2, on the property at Water and Lake Streets. Many businesses made generous monetary, product and service donations, as did local community members. As many might recall, however, there was a last-minute fundraising effort last year to cover a $10,000 budget gap. This gap was covered when Martie McGlasson rallied her network of volunteers, who pounded the pavement distributing American flags and asking for donations to fund the festivities. If everyone reading this would make a donation equivalent to the cost of their favorite latte, a night at the movies, a dinner out or a tank of gas for the boat, there would be more than enough to fund a safe and enjoyable 4th of July celebration. ■

Celebrating 20 years

in the South Lake

Incline Exteriors was founded in 1995 by John Kust and Bill Schenkel, who grew up in the Lake Minnetonka area. From the beginning, they have had a “one roof at

a time” philosophy, which is their way of saying they aim to provide high-quality, individualized service to every customer. While the company installs many types of roofing materials, cedar is a long-time favorite in our area. In no small part, that’s because cedar can withstand temperature extremes and freeze-thaw cycles. Compared with asphalt shingles, cedar is actually more affordable than you might think. And, cedar offers a variety of styles to choose from for roofs and sidewalls. Shingles, which are thinner than shakes, are smooth sawn on both sides to create a uniform, tailored appearance that works well for both modern and traditional architecture styles. The exposed ends of shingles can be sawn in shapes to create custom patterns and designs. Shakes are generally thicker than shingles and are split instead of sawn for a more rustic appearance. Roof hips and ridges are finished with premade ridge caps, or ridge caps can be created onsite. Ridge caps help create a weather-tight roof and unify the look of the roof. Homeowners often choose cedar shakes or shingles for their distinctive beauty and timeless appearance. But the beauty of natural wood is not cedar’s only benefit.

Other advantages of a cedar roof include:• resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage because

of cedar’s natural oils and tannins• high insulation value (up to eight times that of concrete)

per USDA Forest Service• reduced energy costs—up to 15 percent• low maintenance• high resistance to wind uplift• higher hail resistance than asphalt• long life span when properly installed and maintained• watertight when properly installed• greenest roofing and siding material available• biodegradable and eco-friendly• variety of product grades and designs• graceful aging that retains the wood’s natural beauty

To learn more about cedar roof options, give Incline Exteriors a call. They’ll answer your questions, show you wood samples and provide a free no-obligation price quote. They can also help you choose the right cedar and pattern to enhance the look of your home.Incline Exteriors is a leading Minnesota roofing and exterior services company with more than 20 years’ experience with cedar roofs. As an approved member of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau, they’ve had special training in cedar roof and siding installations. The company has a consistent A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. In addition to the manufacturer’s product warranty, they offer the added advantage of a 10-year written workmanship warranty as assurance that they stand behind their work and will be here if any problems occur. ■

L O O K I N G U P T O S C OT TIt’s not every day you meet someone

as tall as Scott Zerby. I, for example, your 6-foot-4-inch, rugby-playing, magazine publisher, look up to Scott. There are a few people who always seem taller than I am. Scott Zerby, the second-term Mayor of Shorewood is looked up to by most people who meet him, even though his actual height is roughly 5 feet 6 inches. When it comes to a mayor, I think we all want someone with solid community passion, an open mind, listening and leadership skills, business sense, and governing experience. Since I came to this community, Scott has shown me all of these qualities on a consistent basis. Scott, a graduate of Fridley High School, grew up in the Twin Cities.

Even as a young man, Scott was on his way to becoming a leader and a community volunteer. As a high school senior, he played the lead role in the musical Oklahoma! and was a ski club member. Scott was also a student council member for his high school, which led him right into continuing to volunteer as a council member at the University of Minnesota. He studied international relations and communications at the U, and was already passionate about causes. For example, he focused some of his time and studies on the growing problems that he forecasted arising from OPEC’s stronger and tighter grip on the United States. Today, however, Scott is a video game publisher, with over 20 years of experience. Five years ago Scott started

his own business, Gamers Digital, and has published 20 titles. Scott claims to have always been a technology geek, so he has created his dream job. He follows market trends to decide what concepts will be successful, then he works with teams to produce games or apps for systems like Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo, and other online platforms. Gamers Digital’s newest product, Cube Creator 3D, will be on the Nintendo 3DS handheld. It is inspired by another popular game, Minecraft, which is not available on

Nintendo. The new game allows users to see the worlds they create in real 3-D because of the new special screen the 3DS uses.

FamilyScott’s life surely changed the day a former classmate invited Scott to play racquetball, because that was the day he met his wife, Theresa. Scott said he continued to show up to play for a month before building up the courage to ask Theresa out on a date. Theresa and Scott’s first date was followed by a date every night for the next three months. Theresa received a surprise marriage proposal just before Christmas, and they started their lives together on the same path. A path that Scott has always enjoyed with his best friend, his wife. Theresa and Scott have two children, Jessica (26) and Adam (21). Adam graduated from Minnetonka High School and has one year left at the University of North Dakota. He is looking forward to receiving a degree in communications. Jessica’s love for the arts and photography led her to graduate from the Main Street School of Performing Arts, in Hopkins. She recently graduated from Columbia in Chicago and is looking for a career that will let her show off her amazing photographic skills while exploring the world. (Her photos

accompanied last monthʼs follow-up on the Sizzle for a Cause event.) Scott and Theresa know they have amazing children and love hanging out with them every time they get a chance.

MayorBecoming mayor of Shorewood has been on Scott’s to-do list since moving from the Fridley area. Scott moved to the South Lake area because this isn’t a suburb, but an actual community, with a downtown and people who care about the history and the future of where they live. A neighbor can become an extended part of the family, and relationships can be formed around the community’s common goals. Scott states that many places are just suburbs, but here in the South Lake area, there are common goals, and neighbors do get behind local causes. After Scott served a total of 10 years on the city council, he ran for mayor. Scott states that city business is not a normal profits-and-losses type of business. He says it is hard to understand that until you start working on the city council. The well-above-average business owner is not guaranteed to run an above-average city term, according to what Scott has learned in his 14 plus years working as a city council member. It is another animal completely. Many Shorewood residents state that Scott is someone they can always go to, that he is always at local events and often spends time listening to thoughts, ideas and concerns from his neighbors. Also important to residents: he provides the information to answer residents’ questions. Scott’s insight and ability to explain a situation are rare qualities in elected officials. Scott said he learned early on from his father, Mike Zerby, a well-known Twin Cities news photographer, how to talk to anyone and listen for their story. Among Scott’s focuses for Shorewood’s future is upgrading the infrastructure. For example, many of the rural roads are not pedestrian or bicycle friendly. Scott knows that these types of upgrades—appreciated by the taxpayers who live here—will not be possible without working closely with many other local government agencies. Scott also plans to continue focusing on environmentally safe practices to ensure that generations to come may also enjoy where they live. One other place Scott spends his time is the Rotary Club of Excelsior. Scott has been a member for 13 years and was recently elected president of his chapter. Rotary is “one of the best ways to invest in our future,” says Scott. ■ Here at South Lake Neighbors, we appreciate Scott’s leadership and the many hours he has volunteered to our community. Scott is always out and about in the community, so be sure to say “Hello, neighbors” the next time you see the Scott and his family!

LOCAL EXPERT

Center for Life Design: keys to the kingdomBY SARAH FRENCH

If your body is a kingdom, Roxann Keyes has studied and learned the keys to the kingdom on many levels. A certified massage therapist for over 10 years, she opened

her practice, the Center for Life Design LLC, in downtown Excelsior in May 2004. It was her experience as a Carver County social worker, dealing with domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and child protection, that lead her to an interest in Trauma Touch. However, it was in a moment years before, while volunteering at a battered women’s shelter, when she recalls the first glimmer of her true calling. She remembers clearly saying to herself, “There’s got to be a way to provide healing touch for people!” She later completed the training program at the Colorado School of Healing Arts, which included more than 700 hours of basic education in massage. After graduating in

2003, she went on to do over 200 hours of additional advanced education. As human beings, our bodies are the

vehicles we use to navigate our lives. And just as any vehicle must be maintained to run smoothly, so do our bodies need

mindful care to keep them strong and able to support movement and activity. In the way a car engine’s system of parts must be properly connected to run, our body’s movement functions when interrelated nerve, muscle and skeletal structures work together. If one key component is weak or beginning to fail, it affects the whole. An automobile will sputter, make noises, run roughly or emit smoke. We, however, feel pain. Roxann does “massage with a purpose” so you will “feel better, be better and get back to doing what you love to do.” The goal of massage is to reduce or eliminate pain, reduce stress and produce a sense of well-being, and Roxann gets you there using five key methods of working with the body. Each of these five approaches

involves a different focus on healing. Roxann’s expertise lies in masterfully employing and applying intuitive combinations of them to work her magic. She likens the body to a tent pole with tethers. The tent pole (your spine) is held erect and supported by tethers (muscles and nerves) fastened to it. Everything must be in balance for the tent to stand. If a tether is injured or weakened, it stresses another as it pulls too hard to compensate, causing tension, inflammation and pain. If the tent pole has a kink, its unevenness results in pain. Both chiropractic and massage are beneficial, Roxann says. “It’s not an either-or choice. It’s an and.” One concentration of Roxann’s, orthopedic massage, is particularly relevant in our northern clime, where both cars and people slide on the ice. Its hallmark, gained from sports and medical massage, is an emphasis on assessing, treating and rehabilitating injuries. A car sliding into a minor fender bender, even going only five miles per hour, can cause neck pain and headaches. Roxann shares that she “works with a lot of car accident people” and emphasizes the benefit of coming in at the first sign of pain, when it might take only one session to relive the problem. Our icy Minnesota winter perils were the culprit behind one client’s slip and fall. She landed on her shoulder, causing “deep pain at the juncture.” The woman visited her doctor and completed an entire round of physical therapy, but it wasn’t providing much relief. Using her training in the science and methodology of orthopedic massage, Roxann employed the tools for treating this kind of specific injury. One session later, the client happily reported that it was “pinching less” and she was experiencing more ease of movement. Orthopedic massage is also used effectively,

Roxann says, “for athletes, runners, weekend warriors or anyone embarking on a workout regime. If they would come to me first or at the very first onset of trauma, I can tell what’s going on.” Then, after determining where the weak area is, “I can prevent it from becoming an injury. Or, if someone is already injured, I can rehab it.” Deep tissue massage is also a specialty of Roxann’s. The technique is widely misunderstood, she says. “The former awareness of it was to get in and dig—which hurts!” She explains that “deep tissue” simply means our muscles are in layers, and that the old “no pain, no gain” point of view doesn’t apply. If the pressure is too hard on the top layer of muscle, the body naturally guards itself against further intrusion and tenses up. So, when a therapist pushes too deeply too soon, “it causes even more pain, and it’s not helpful.” Her way is to relax the surface structures until they allow her into the deeper layers where the actual pain is held. Roxann’s massage strengths also lie in Swedish massage, to promote relaxation and healing;

neuromuscular (trigger point) therapy, for breaking tension-stress pain cycles and creating balance between muscles and nerves; myofascial release, a very effective tool for relief of chronic pain; and Reiki, which works with the body’s energy field to bring it into physical, mental and spiritual balance. One of her greatest passions is Trauma Touch, which addresses emotional trauma held in the body. For this, she is uniquely trained. In addition to a BA in psychology and a master’s in business management, she trained in Hakomi, a body-centered therapy, at the Hakomi Institute; completed Ontological Coaching at Ideal Coaching; and trained 100 hours in Trauma Touch. One notable distinction about Roxann Keyes is that she tells you what you can do outside of her office that will help you. For her, talking is part of the session: it’s not chit-chat, but rather, finding out what your body is trying to tell you. “Our bodies speak to us in sensations, and our biggest clue that something’s wrong and it’s time to get work done, is pain.” Her passion, it would seem, is healing our bodily kingdom while teaching us how to use the keys. ■

HEALTH TIPS

STEEAAAM your produceBY HEATHER SMITH

In Minnesota, many teachers dream of having a garden to use as a tool for teaching. But with such long winters and short springs, teachers always have to question

whether spring will come early enough for the kids to be there to watch their garden grow and learn from it. When my youngest entered kindergarten at Groveland Elementary, I approached his teacher, Señora Jennifer Torres, and asked if she would be willing to try a garden in her classroom. She was so excited about the many different areas of her kindergarten curriculum the garden would enhance that she applied for, and received, a grant from the Minnetonka Foundation that has allowed her to have a permanent garden in her classroom. The classroom garden idea has started to spread to other schools. The system that I introduced into the classroom is aeroponic. This means that the plants grow in an environment of air and mist. There is no soil, and the garden is very portable. The lights that we use are the strength of the spring and fall sun. The produce is a variety of lettuce, kale, cilantro, basil, chives, broccoli, celery, Swiss chard, etc. The produce is clean and ready to be picked and eaten. The best part is that when kids grow the food, they eat it. Señora Carolina Dufault at Clear Springs Elementary was told that one of her students was eating more produce at home. A garden is a perfect fit for STEM programs, which are transitioning into STEEAAAM (science,

technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, arts, agriculture, applied sciences and math). The Minnetonka School District focuses its 3rd grade science curriculum around plants. The kids are able to use the technology of the iPad to document the changes of the plants. A great way to teach engineering would be for the students to follow the instructions to put together a garden and see where they could make improvements. The variety of shapes and colors make the plants a perfect subject for art projects. Measuring the growth rate of the produce is great for math skills. There is even the potential to teach business skills by growing enough produce to sell and use in the cafeteria. Harvesting the seedlings and selling them for a fundraiser will help the kids reach into the community. There are so many possibilities, and any teacher you ask could come up with many more. My vision is to teach as many children as possible about where our food comes from and why it’s important to eat whole, natural food. I hope that gardening in the schools will inspire the children to ask their families to garden at home. Gardening is full of lessons that will encourage the children to never stop growing—and to love their fruits and vegetables! My mission as a holistic health coach is to educate families about easy ways to “eat healthy, play often, and never stop growing.” The Tower Garden is an amazing tool to help fulfill my mission. What can you do today to start STEEAAAMing produce in your school? For photos of the gardens in the Minnetonka Public Schools, go to www.eat-play-grow.com/grow-gardens-in-schools.html. ■
