The date has now been set and we will be having our picnic
this year on September 15th at Dottie and Walt's home at
3307 Roxford in the Maynard Lake Subdivision. This is
always one of the fun events of the year so you don't want to
miss out on the great food and fellowship. Mark your
calendar, invite a friend (Frank, that's Lula), and start
planning which covered dish you'll bring. Remember, I love
chocolate cake and chocolate pie. Don't know the cost yet .
but I'd anticipate it will be in the $6.00-$7.00 range.

We've decided not to hold a meeting today due to
our leaders being out of state. Nancy & Tom will
be on a 9-day trip to Rocky Mountains of Colorado
where they'll take 5 railroad day-trips in addition to
visiting the U.S. Air Force Academy, Royal
Gorge, Garden of the Gods, Black Canyon of the
Gunnison, the Rocky Mountain & Mesa Verde
National Parks, and other sites.

Our speaker today is a friend of our club, Stephanie
Record, the Executive Director of Crisis Nursery of
Champaign County. She was originally scheduled for
August 25th but we canceled the meeting so our members
could attend Merle Dunn's visitation and funeral. On
July 9th they celebrated the 30th Anniversary of
opening their doors in 2 rooms in Burnham Hospital. In
the past 30 years they have served 15,000 county children.
Be sure to attend today as we'll be presenting them with many supplies for their children.

Four years ago we began touring interesting community
facilities. We first toured the world-class Beckman Institute
followed by Flightstar Aviation, Army Corps of Engineers
Research Lab, and the Champaign Co. Historical Museum.
At our August board meeting the directors voted to tour the
Museum of the Grand Prairie at the Lake of the Woods.
Your editor's been tasked with working out the arrangements.

The last year we cleaned up Scott Park on East Springfield
Ave. in eastern Champaign. Committee Chairman Frank Scantlebury will be asking
members to sign up in October to help clean up the park again this year on Saturday,
October 18th for our National Day of Service Project. We will need at least five
volunteers to help out. There is no Fighting Illini football game on that Saturday.

After honoring 26 families over a 4-year period for correctly and proudly flying the
American Flag, I was unable to come up with six worthy recipients last year. In order to
be successful this year I need the help of everyone. As you traverse the city over the next
month note the address of people you see that are flying the flag properly and turn their
address in to me at one of our luncheons.

This annual conference is a must attend for club officers and directors and one of the
requirements for the District 100% Club Award. It's your chance to find out what's
going on around the district, get new ideas, and get any questions you may have
answered by other knowledgeable Exchangites. I'll have the details in November.

We didn't have a club meeting today due to the Labor Day Holiday, but members of our club were still hard at work carrying out one of our club's best programs of service, the GiveAKidAFlagToWave Program. This was our sixth time in the past seven years that we've joined together with the Urbana Exchangites in handing out flags to the kids at the parade in Urbana. (One year the parade had to be cancelled due to the severe weather forecast for our area. As luck would have it, it didn't rain that day after all.)
As I reflect on this day and all the blessing I've had bestowed on me I can't help but be grateful for all the Americans past and present who have put their lives on the line that we could meet as free men and women and hold a Labor Day Parade in the twin cities. I am especially grateful to those Americans who gave their lives so we would have the freedoms we enjoy.
GGIIVVEEAAKKIIDDAAFFLLAAGGTTOOWWAAVVEE
When we carry out our flag programs we are really
doing it for two reasons. First, it's one of the ways we
Exchangites show our pride in America and show our
thanks for all those who have defended it. Secondly,
we do it for the kids. If you haven't participated in
the program yet you won't believe the faces of the
kids when they are handed an American Flag. Their
anticipation and appreciation make all the work and
costs very rewarding (see below). You need to join us
next year.
Exchange
Covenant
of Service
Accepting the divine privilege of single and collective responsibility as life's
noblest gift, I covenant with my fellow Exchangites:
* To consecrate my best energies to the uplifting of
Social, Religious, Political and Business ideals;
* To discharge the debt I owe to those of high and low estate who have served and sacrificed that the heritage of American
citizenship might be mine; * To honor and respect law, to serve my fellowmen, and uphold the ideals and institutions of
my Country; * To implant the life-giving,
society-building spirit of Service and Comradeship in
my social and business relationships;
* To serve in Unity with those seeking better conditions, better understandings, and
greater opportunities for all.

Pictured above in the front row from the left are John & Judy Hummel (Urbana), Wally Lehman
(Champaign), John Smith (Urbana), and Nancy & Tom Williams (Champaign). In the back row we
have Van Bowersox (Urbana), Dave Wilson (partially obscured from Urbana), Thomas Williams, Jr.
(Champaign), the son of Fred Holhubner in Orange, Fred Holhubner (Urbana), Phil Hoggatt
(Urbana), John Hummel, Jr., and Marge Wilson (Urbana). Sitting in the truck in front of the
Exchange logo with the blue & white hat is our irrepressible leader Frank Scantlebury (Champaign).
Today three helpers and 13 members of the Champaign and Urbana Exchange Clubs gathered
together south of Lincoln Square ready to hand out American Flags to the kids along the Labor Day
Parade route. (Have you ever seen such a handsome crew?) This was the sixth year the two clubs
joined together in sponsoring the GiveAKidAFlagToWave Program on Labor Day in Champaign-
Urbana under the leadership of the clubs co-chairmen Frank Scantlebury (Champaign) and John
Hummel (Urbana). The biggest thank you must go to John & Judy Hummel for supplying their
truck for the program. We couldn't do it without them. I think Frank gets credit for today's
weather, a cloudy 77 degrees with a nice breeze, in spite of the forecast for scattered thundershowers.
At press time your editor didn't have a final count on the number of American Flags we handed out,
but I'd guess it's in the 1,000 range give or take a couple hundred. Frank always rides in the back of
the truck and keeps a close eye on the flags. I think I heard him making Judy Hummel even sign a
form before he would release a bundle of flags to her. We will have a final count next week.
